I'm listening to early Red House Painters right now, and it's mindblowing how talented they were on those 4AD records. They've got my vote.

Which should I download from emusic? Last Call for Vitriol or In The Valley of Dying Stars?
-
Last Call for Vitriol.
Although either of the first two albums (Regretfully Yours or Head Trip in Every Key) are the better bet.
-
GGW is correct, the first two are the best, but I prefer Dying Stars over Vitriol
-
hmmm, one vote each - I wish the first two were on emusic....I'll try and track em down

Ballboy
Sodastream
Bishop Allen
David Dondero
Bedhead

Bags, thatdog. was a great band...I saw them open for Blur once. Great stuff!

Jonathan Fire*Eater. Although the Walkmen rose from the ashes, I still prefer "Wolf Songs For Lambs" over anything the Walkmen produced (although I still dig the Walkmen).

Yes.

and the "tremble under boom lights" EP is even better. those dreamworks folks made stewart's voice a bit too high on the album. just found a myspace page for the child ballads (http://myspace.com/childballad). hopefully they can get their shit together enough to get an album out. "white chocolate tea" is a really great song.

Depends on your definition of "indie".
There are some UK bands that do great over there, but are treated as "indie" bands in the states as far as label support, radio play and general recognition.
Teenage Fanclub was one of those bands that I always thought would take off here in the states, but never really caught on. Same applies to Stereophonics.

i guess it also depends on your defintion of "underrated" ... teenage fanclub snagged album of the year from spin over nirvana's 'nevermind' and 15 yrs later still plays to good-sized crowds at rock clubs like 930 ... but yeah, they never really broke through over here to anything bigger than the indie scene

mudhoney, hands down!
-
In the US, the La's. Certainly not a soft one-hit wonder as many here may consider them to be. A great album - that's never seems to be mentioned - and at least one other classic song in Timeless Melody. And even the "one hit" is probably underrated - relegated to chick flick soundtrack material by many rather than appreciated as the perfect proto-Britpop song it is.

I like that song too, but I fear that it's all that The Childballads have up thier sleeves...it's been floating around for about a year with various mixes and various names.
Though the myspace page does say a release is due in the fall so we'll see.

Their song "I Can Be Her Man" is stunning!
I've got a copy of The El Dorado LP that I got new a couple years ago that only cost me maybe $10 or even less. About a year or so later, I saw it going for over $1,300!!! Now, they don't even have it listed.
I'm not even going to start listing bands because there are way, way, way too many.

I am full of envy, bearman....
Anna Waronker came out with a solo album a couple years ago that is really good. Kind of that dog mach 2.
And, Petra Haden is of course touring with the Decemberists.
Tanya Haden (not in the band, but a triplet to the other sisters who formed the band) married Jack Black and bore him a child.
-
Have you ever heard the Petra Hayden Sells Out album? I was pretty skeptical, but I listened to an MP3 that Pitchfork posted of her doing the vocal treatment to God Only Knows, and it was pretty great.

Yes and it's one of those reason why my favorite digital download service works for me so well. It's good but it would have been hard to justify owning as a full priced CD. "I Can See For Miles" for instance works really well with others just ok. I agree her "God Only knows" is pretty amazing...

Underated choices

JB Beverley and the Wayward Drifters

I find myself playing Clinic's first two albums all the time. Those albums are so good, and I can see that band kind of just fading away like Six By Seven did, which was another great band.

Would have to agree about the definition of indie.
The Frames, for example, is a good choice, but they are huge in Ireland, Czech Repub, and across Europe.
Up to a few years ago, my vote would have been for Calexico, but now...i think mercury program or world inferno/friendship need more help.

They still release things once in awhile but it's usually extremely DIY and you have to buy the stuff directly from them.
Also, keep your ears opened for Chris Davis' (the man behind Six.By.Seven) new band with Katty Heath (ex-Bent) called Spotlight Kid. .....Actually, now that I think of it, my friend's record label is putting this release out so odds are good that I'll be able to get some of the goods for my radio show.
