So, as the festival approaches, i'm up to my ears in bands, and am making offers etc., sometimes with not enough info.
So, i'd like to occasionally throw some bands out there for you to tell me what you think the interest level would be, or, if you saw them recently, how the crowd was. Doesn't mean these bands are playing the festival, or that I've even talked to them, but it can help me determine if they should be. Cool? Cool.
Lets start with:
Land of Talk
Annuals
Man Man
Okkervil River
...Trail of Dead

Land of Talk - pretty good
Annuals - skip
Man Man - pretty good
Okkervil River - very good
...Trail of Dead -you're kidding right?
-
If you can somehow bring Trail of Dead circa 1999, that would rule. Otherwise, double check to Okkervil.
-
i saw the annuals earlier this year at the club and was bored.
-
...Trail of Dead is a band I don't listen to very much, despite having their music. However, the only reason I have their music is because when I've seen them live, they've kicked so much ass that I've been persuaded to buy it.
-
Trail of Dead would be huge. Man Man is a viable 2nd. Their live show at Macrock last year was incredible.
-
Okkervil River and Man Man please!
...Trail of Dead were boring last time.
-
Man Man would be super awesome.
-
i dunt like any of those bands.
sorry!
-
I'll put my vote in for Okkervill River, though none of them would keep me out past my bedtime.
-
Okkervill River would be a great addition.
-
Overkill River it is then!
-
Land of Talk, please!
-
Just to keep things interesting, I think Okkervil River blows. I'm in the minority, but I thought that Iota show from a year or two ago was bo-ring.
-
I thought that Iota show was so so, as well, but I thought their Ottobar show earlier this year was great--maybe I just knew more songs by then, I dunno.
+1 to Man Man, as well. Wait, didn't they play the same Iota show?

Yes, they did indeed.
Okkervil River and Trail of Dead for me.
-
Okkervil River and Man Man!
-
I like everyone's enthusiasm, but how was the crowd at some of these shows? I like the bands too, but sadly $$$ always plays a role, and i need to be sure they are not gonna bankrupt us.
Oh, and a few more:
Mission of Burma
Ash
Craig Wedren
Rock Plaza Central
(again, not a wish list or a secret way for me to try out bands, it may well end up that none of these bands play the festival, I'm just trying to test their actual value versus their value in my head.)
-
I would guess Okkervil would draw, the Iota show was packed (that was winter 05-06, and granted, there were two other solid acts playing), and I think the closest they've come since is that Ottobar show, which was pretty full if not sold out.
-
BURMA.
Though if you could get Craig Wedren to play with Shudder to Think that would be pretty sweet.
How about Burma and Shudder to Think on the same bill?
-
I'd think an Ash greatest hits set would be a good draw. It's not going to sell out 9:30, but it could do well at a smaller place, especially if it's promoted right.
-
Mountain Goats = big draw
-
I vote Mission of Burma and Rock Plaza Central but can tell you nothing about the crowd at either show, sorry.
When I saw Okkervil River it was a pretty good crowd, i think they would have a big draw because if I'm remembering correctly, they haven't been here in awhile.
I saw Man Man open for Fiery Furnaces (i think? is that right?) and the crowd was pretty into it for an opener, a fair number of people showed up if I am remembering correctly.
-
Oh yeah, and BigYawn (http://www.bigyawn.net) is back, finally. We actually have a contest at the moment, though not sure how many of you would be interested in it.

Lets start with:
Land of Talk - Great, get them if you can, should be relatively cheap
Annuals - hit or miss but not boring, over exposed
Man Man - agnostic
Okkervil River - get em
...Trail of Dead - I still like them, kill live, get em if the price is right

I believe it was Man Man and Charles Bissell opening.
You already know how much I want Okkervil to play the Fest ;)
-
Mission of Burma at the Black Cat in '06 (maybe July) was close to sold out and they absolutely killed. Them and Man Man together would make my head asplode (http://images.wikia.com/uncyclopedia/images/thumb/3/3d/Splode.jpg/200px-Splode.jpg).
-
Burma Burma Burma.
-
I'll make it easy for you, redsock:
Okkervil. Then Burma the next night. Then have Trail of Dead play their first album, Madonna, and Source Tags straight through. Also, get them to rehire the original bass player. That guy ruled.
-
trail and burma would be more likely to get me out of the burbs
-
Id come down to see Ash. And have always wanted to see Land of Talk.
If someone paid me, id still not see Annuals. Each time gets more painful!
-
I've seen Mission of Burma 4-5 times since they reunited. They slay.

Yes, please. Infact, in the past two weeks I've been meaning to check out their site to see what's new. I missed them in the city over a year ago, and would like to see them live.

I'd think Ash would fill up a smallish venue. And they'd be great.
I'd def see Burma.
Rock Plaza Central did nothing for me in Austin, and there was very little crowd even though they were between John Doe and Apples in Stereo.

MAN MAN!
MAN MAN!!
MAN MAN!!!!!
MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN MAN
good god, i love them
-
Ditto! That RNR Hotel show last march was just about as fun as it gets.

Alright, well, no Okkervil for DAM! Fest anyway, at least they are still coming (he says while throwing knives at an image of the RnR Hotel's booker).
More bands for you to think about:
Pernice Brothers
Eric Bachmann
Earl Greyhound
Gizzly Bear
Elf Power
Jens Lekman
Please, discuss...
-
Jens
-
I love me some grizzly bear and elf power.
-
definitely TRAIL OF DEAD.....
and I think Ash would draw a good crowd.
sorry, but what festival is this we're talking about?
-
Out of that group Jens, but keep him away from Man Man, they may eat him.
-
If you will allow it I would like to add a band that isn't listed. If you could get The Brain Jonestown Massacre you would be the best.
-
Pernice Brothers and Jens Lekman. Set them up on my back deck and we'll pack the audience into our backyard.

I assume, the DAM!Festival.
-
Mr. Lekman
-
Yeah, I was there. It was awesome. I believe it's time to do it again.
And to answer the orginal question: Jens/Burma/Man Man

Any chance of trying to get Circulatory System? Maybe their new album will finally be out by then (hah...wishful thinking).
