Title: K of C at Iota
Post by: kcjones119 on January 31, 2005, 12:10:00 pm
Anyone going to Kings of Convenience at Iota on Saturday?  Just trying to gauge the interest in it and figure out what time I'll need to get there to get in since I haven't been to Iota before.  It seems run similarly to the Black Cat Backstage bumrush.  Anyone had any problems or have some advice?

No prob, got the disc on saturday, it's pretty damn great.  Make sure you use the extra money to buy some nice things at Hot Topic.

Damn pissed I can't make it.  I've been wanting to see them for a while and Iota is really close too.  I would expect this one to sell out.  Be sure to make a reservation if plan on eating there and securing a ticket otherwise you will probably not get a table.

Cool, I need some new jewllery for my nipple piercings... Its a shame you are going to this show instead of my birthday party or I would have shown you.  ;)

Apparently the "no reservations" is a new policy -- I've done it numerous times in the past, but now there's a prohibition against it stated on the website.  Perhaps they've been burned by the policy -- too bad.

no reservations ... i got there around 7pm for the colin meloy show (which i think had more buzz than KoC), and we got the last table in the restaurant, but there was plenty of time to get inside if you weren't eating ...

Were you in the window? We got there around the same time....

It was pretty quiet in the bar area till around 8-8.30, but it is difficult to judge how busy an act at iota will be.

won't they be afraid that people will just show up for the soundcheck thingy?  i am probably going to the under age gig, and unless they totally blow me away..then i wil probably skip the real show.

I imagine they'll ID for the soundcheck to make sure you're under 21. So, no, you could only get in to one or the other.

Tis only for the young ones:
 from the Astralwerks newsletter:

"Next Tuesday, February 1st marks the start of the first North American tour by Kings Of Convenience in almost three years. Kicking off the festivities in Orlando at The Social, Erlend and Eirik will be hitting many places they have never played before including Atlanta and Athens, GA and a stop in DC (actually Arlington, VA) before they head to New York for two sold-out shows at the Bowery Ballroom. The band is reaching out to anyone in the DC area who is under 21 to invite him or her to a special FREE soundcheck party between 5:30 - 6:30PM at the Iota Club in Arlington on Saturday, February 5th. You won't get the full show but you will be able to meet and greet the band and get a few choice renditions from their excellent new album, 'Riot On An Empty Street.' Tickets are on sale for the regularly scheduled show for 21+ patrons the same night. Full tour details are available by visiting our Kings Of Convenience site, and the band will be announcing West Coast dates very soon."

Hmm..KofC site states 6:30 - 7:30 pm...

More bands should do this - plenty of youngin's are upset they can't go to Iota.

I'm wondering if this has anything to do with Pancake Mountain? If not, they are both missing out on a great opportunity.

be prepared to be quiet.

they make the audience be absolutely silent. they take is as far as saying if the bartenders mus mix martiinis, then they should do it in rhythm of the song.

I wish Iron and Wine had this policy. The Iota show was ruined for me by chatty kattys.

Speaking of Pancake Mountain - The Arcade Fire recorded some stuff for them when they were in town.

At the minimum, 7:30. Maybe earlier. I got there at 8:30 and we only got into the dining room. I could barely hear the music so I left.

it was sold out by around 7:30-45.

the show itself was very, very good. i like how they keep that same just-above-a-whisper volume from their records when performing live. crowd was very well-behaved too (upfront at least).

a couple of friends of mine got there too late and tried listening from the restaurant side. when i met up with them afterwards, they all thought the band wasn't using mics and (literally) playing acoustically.
