Suede at the 200 person capacity Venue in Edinburgh just as they were starting to get big is probably the highlight of my concert going.
I hadnt got a ticket and I stood outside in the cold for five hours. Eventually the bouncer took pity on me 60 seconds before the band took to the stage. I could have kissed him.
The crowd in the place was wild.
-
Def Leppard, St. Louis Arena 1989
I was 12 or 13, and very impressed

Hmmmmmmm.......
Two 14 year old girls, Singapore...oh, wait, you mean music right?

dammit markie, you beat me to posting this topic
I have a couple of favorites
Therapy? at McGonagles in Dublin in the early 90s - don't know how I made it out alive - craaazy crowd
Throwing Muses - 2001 - Boston - a reunion gig for a band I thought I'd never get to see live (even though I ended up seeing them again this year)
Afghan Whigs - 1994/1995 - Stuttgart - they played in an old tunnel/bomb shelter that had been converted to a venue - Dulli was in fine form and abusing a crowd of hapless Germans
Fatima Mansions - early 90s Feile festival - seeing them go nuts in front of a largely indifferent crowd with Cathal Coughlan screaming "She's wearing an Irish dancing costume....and you know, I LIKE that in a woman" - one of those had to be there moments
Nirvana/Sonic Youth - Top Hat ballroom - Dublin - the week before Nevermind was released - both bands were excellent
The The - Fletchers Bar - Baltimore - 2001 - really only a warm up gig but to see one of my all time faves in such a tiny space was special
Lloyd Cole and the Negatives - Metro Cafe - 2001 - great gig
-
R.E.M. in 1984 (USF soccer field)
Buzzcocks @ old 9:30
Foo Fighters at old Black Cat
Echo & the Bunnymen in New Haven, CT
-
a quick off the top of my head
marti jones and don dixon @ the birchmere
ben folds five @ the shelter in detroit. if only because the shelter was in the basement of st. andrews and an another band was finishing up their set upstairs and you could hear the bass coming through the floor. at one point ben jumped up on his piano and knocked on the ceiling why said something along the lines of "be quiet"
ash @ the shelter, detroit when they were still a very young trio of lads
posies and cosmic rough riders @ dingwalls in camden
blur @ st andrews
the alarm @ todds in detoit
the first myracle brah show @ the tatttoo
-
hmmm, there's quite a few. . .
sepultura/helmet/ministry 1992 bill graham civic center in san francisco
dambuilders/weezer/lush 1995 fillmore in san francisco
wire train/live 1992 the edge in palo alto, ca
wally pleasant/idaho/the cranes 1995 deep ellum live in dallas (got passes from the drummer, so no one checked out id and got to drink all night)
failure/flaming lips/tool 1994 the terrace in austin
american analog set/low 1995(6?) electric lounge in austin (also, spiritualized at electric lounge in austin- my friends made a dat recording of the show, which i bet many people on here have)
-
I forgot one
Alejandro Escovedo played a gig earlier this year or late last year at the Barns of Wolf Trap - very different to most gigs I go to but it was just incredible - him, two violinists, a classical guitarist, and a cellist (who was getting REALLY into it) - unbelievable sound, just unbelievable

Good.....
I was at that The the show..... Was it really better than the 930 show? His acoustic version of the beat(en) generation was great at fletchers. I also saw them about 9 years ago when they did a warm up show in cambridge before one of the UK festival (glastonbury I think).
I saw the Muses 13 years ago. They didnt play Dizzy and got pissed off at the crowd for requesting it. I am still bitter.
Isnt Lloyd Cole sad and pathetic now? I used to love him....

How many arms did the drummer have? Has there been a week since where you have not worn a union jack T-shirt?
I thought of another special show......
three guys from the levellers played a little bar in Dundee with just acoustic guitars. It was an amazing sing along.

most memorable shows to me:
Pixies w/Pere Ubu @ Citadel Center, DC, Nov. 2001
Red House Painter @ Birchmere, October 1993
Aphex Twin w/Death in Vegas & Sneaker Pimps @ 9:30, September 1997
Morrissey @ San Carlos Institute, Key West, November 1997
The Damned @ House Of Blues, Chicago, March 1998
Social Distortion @ 9:30, Nov. 2001
Sonic Youth @ Valle Giulia, Rome, Italy, July 2002
Queens of the Stone Age w/the Distillers @ the Warfield, SF, October 2003
Almost any Echo & the Bunnymen/Electrafixion show would be in there, so would My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult on my 18th birthday @ the Metro in Chicago. Sugar @ the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago...Good God, too many to list. But those are some of the best ones.
-
sorry, that Pixies show should be 1991, not 2001
-
No particular order:
A. Stone Roses WUST musical hall. 1 1/2 hours of great music. Left sated.
B. The Jesus and Marychain College Park circa 1986. 9353 opened and were brilliant too.
C. Butthole Surfers, College Park 1988 (hairway tour with 2 drummers, GIs opened up).
D. My Bloody Valentine, Hammerjacks. Loveless tour, 1992 (Mercury Rev opened and were great too).
E. Sigur Ros, 930 Club, 2003.
F. Chemical Brothers, 930 Club, 1999.
G. Fugazi, last year at Ft. Reno. When they got to the 2 hour + sets, I would lose ability to watch.
H. Husker Du, Warehouse tour, old 930.
-
Ryan Adams at King Tuts in Glasgow in 2000 (Heartbreaker/pre-rock star era). Just Ryan and a guitar.

9.30 show was probably better overall but still, to see him in a tiny venue like that was memorable
I still like Lloyd - I have all his solo stuff and The Negatives album - good lyrics and he writes great pop songs....apparently there is some move afoot to have a reunion tour with the Commotions next year
-
1. Sleater-Kinney: 930 one beat tour)
2. Sebadoh: Dallas (harmacy tour)
3. Ida/ Pedro the lion: Denton, TX (its hard to find a friend tour)
4. Elliot Smith: Dallas (figure 8 tour)
5. The Queers/ the Groovie Ghoulies: Denton, TX (i don't know, i was like 15)

oh, i forgot. . .
tarnation/red house painters 1999(2000?) great american music hall in san francisco.. .
they really played at the birchmere? saw them when they came through last time at the black cat, i think the crowd plays way too much in their sets, which is why that show was disappointing, but the san francisco show was excellent.
-
Chemical Brothers @ Electric Factory 1996
U2 - RFK Stadium 1992
Coachella 2003 (does that count, it was many bands!)
-
I gave him up when he had his kid and did the morning has broken stuff.......
the early solo cds are the weakest - I actually forgot about him for about 6 years and rediscovered him when Love Story was released
I'll burn you a CD of his more recent stuff - I think you'll like it
-
thanks.....
but you probably dont need to. I am sure I have seen them in game exchange on the cheap..... Which do you recommend?
-
Which do you recommend?
Start with The Negatives, then Love Story

Ok, thanks.......
Another great show was beck on the odelay tour in Glasgow. I drove 6 hours to get there and passed out near the end. It looked and sounded fantastic.

Next month I'm taking my daughter to see The Wiggles (http://www.thewiggles.com.au/about/thewiggles.html) at MCI Center. This is sure to be near the top of my list of all time greats.

-sonic youth thousand leaves tour free show at penn state. ben fold five show at the same free show the next year would be an honorable mention
-sleater-kinney in 2002 at the 930
-guided by voices do the collapse tour at the beehive in pittsburgh
-trail of dead club laga pittsburgh like right after source tags and codes came out
honorable mention goes to the lemonheads at washington and jefferson college in 1997, for getting to party with evan dando and murphy the ex-dinosaur jr drummer. what a bunch of wackos
-
Hey Sir HC, nice to meet another 9353 fan! I missed that show, although I actually remebmer hearing from others that they sucked. One thing I remember about 9353 is that when they played smallish venues like the 930 or dc space, they were usually awesome, but they often seemed to fall flat on their face at bigger shows.
Best show I've ever, ever seen was Jesus and Mary Chain, Curve, Dinosaur Jr., My Bloody Valentine, and Blur, together in Brighton, UK circa 1991 or 1992. The music was intense, and the Brits, about 2,000 frenzied teenagers, got into the music in a way that I've never seen DCers do.
Best show I've seen here in DC was probably the "Punk-Funk Spectacular," Minor Threat and Trouble Funk, sometime around 1982. At the Lansburgh Center, then an abandoned department store, now a luxury apartment building.
isn't it time you visited Doomlink? (http://www.alex.to/lavalampcity)

Hey, thanks for reminding me
i should have put up there when i saw Evan Dando play in Dallas in Spring 2002. It was just him and some guy from Massive Attack and he played, like, every song thats good:
rockin stroll
hannah n gabi
frying pan
dawn can't decide
i don't think i've ever been so awestruck. i went and got an autograph just so i could say thanks for playing frying pan. funny thing was it was a first date and i just kept drooling and yelling like a little girl and going "gawd he's hawt." when i dumped the guy later he said i'd been "the puzzle piece behind the couch that makes the sky complete."
:p

I had read that they were very mixed, never saw them at Space or 930 in their heyday, did see them for their reunion at Taste of DC back when Pratt-Kelly was mayor (she was at the gig). They did a lot of their classics that night, had fun, and sounded good and tight to me and my friend. Taped the show, but they were loud so it is all distorted beyond use.

I saw them twice back in the day.
Then, about ten years ago I ran into Vance as I was coming out of the Foggy Bottom Metro. He was bumming for change. He said something along the lines of: "Yeah, I used to be in this band, 9353, we played around here a lot. Maybe you heard of us? I've been clean for a couple weeks and I'm trying to get something to eat. Can you help me out?"
It was pretty sad.
I've since heard different things about whether he is clean or not now. Hope he is.

I understand completely...I took my daughter to see Hanson a few years ago. The look on her face when they walked on stage was worth sitting through mmmmmmm bop a million times if I had to.

Add me to the list of 9353 fans. One of my favorites, back in the day. Remember those great fliers they would cover the city with?
It's OK.
It's not loaded.
I'm a good driver.
Don't worry, honey.

Have both their records, have the CDs, the last CD was a downer, all instrumental and with only Bruce left in the band. Had heard that Vance was still clean, hope so. Their flyers (many which were on the stairs at DC space) were great. And such a short simple name made them stand out. Try writing "Super furry creatures" or "The Soundtrack of Our Lives" on a poster so that everyone driving by can read it.
-
I don't think I have the all-instrumental CD, but I did see that incarnation at DCAC once.
My favorite incarnation of 9353 will always be Merkle/Carmer/Bockis/Joseph, i.e. the original, or close to it. Apparently like many a great band they hated each other, and that tension only ramped up the psychopathic dynamic that much more.
I remember one time at DC Space Bruce Merkle puked over the edge of the stage, and the front row of the audience jumped back in horror....
-
smithereens @ the bayou it was the 10th anniversary of "especially for you" and they played it in it's entire starting with track one.

BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUU HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEH
Oh, please, someone slap me!
He said Primal Scream were good..hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah oh hahahahahahah.
Sorry, but they really are the absolute worst fucking pile of shit that I've ever heard my long, long life
-
I like Primal Scream.
But I've heard they can put on some crap shows.
-
Allman Brothers, Portland Oregon, fall of 1991 -- they were two hours late to the venue, refunds were offered, band finally came on, apologized and said they were going to play everything for us. Which, damn sam, they did, for almost four hours.
Little Women, Portland Satrycon, 1992, Drug-edgey jam band usually played the regular 'alternative music' club, but on the night before I left for D.C., they played the hardcore punk club and kicked it out of the park.
The Verve, 9:30 Club, November 1997, loudest show I can remember, band was on fire with the noise, and I spontaneously made out with the girl standing next to me during the 'Come On' freakout.
Guided By Voices, 9:30 Club, last year (August?), my first time seeing them and it was so great that I couldn't stop laughing the whole time.
Grateful Dead, RFK Stadium, 06/25/95, the last D.C. show, and after 61 previous shows through the years, the best I (and my partner of 40+ shows) had seen. Then Jerry died, which was probably for the best.
Honorables:
that last Black Rebel Motorcycle Club show was seriously great.
I thought the Immortal Lee Country Killers II, opening up for the Driveby Truckers a few months ago, were just about perfect.
Monster Magnet at the old 9:30 Club was insane.
The Verve at the old 9:30 Club in 1995 was incredible, mostly due to the ridiculous amount of tension between the singer and guitarist. Great bootleg too.
Soundgarden, Monster Magnet and Swervedriver in Seattle in 1991
Pavement at the old Black Cat in 1994 has always stuck in my head, as has the Afghan Whig show there a couple months later.
Worst Ever Show:
The Dude of Life at the old 9:30

Well you really ought checkout the Primal Scream records with Mani from the Stone Roses on them. Vanishing Point and XTRMNTR. You saw them during their trying very very hard to be the Rolling Stones. It failed miserably except for one single "Rocks"
Primal Scream at the 9:30 club on the XTRMNTR tour. One word AWESOME. Three guitarist including Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine, getting to stand in front of Bass God Mani, and a horn section. Blew my head off...

Possibly the only highlight of an otherwise miserable tour. Wharf Rat and Brokedown from this show are terrific.

As some already know, I never went to many shows. But the best was The Dead Milkmen at Max's on Broadway(Balt). I used to be a huge Milkman fan...still kind of am one. R.U.1?

I pick up on every fad quite late. I'd be hip, but I'm much too straight.

Started in on the Dead Milkmen when WCVT 89.7 FM Towson radio played Bitchin' Camero. Saw them at the 9:30 about 88? Saw them at GW, they played a cafeteria, around 90/91. They were great, a great band from Philly.

I've never seen or heard Grand Buffett.
Honestly, I don't think Cex is all that great but he can be funny. He's more the type that I'd love to invite to a party. I'm just amazed at how much I see him positively written up in national and international reviews and such.

They tour and often play with Cex. Saw them together at the Ottobar. They are what you would expect from white Pittsburg rappers.

Elliott Smith and Grandaddy at the Recher (Figure 8 Tour for Elliott, Sophtware Slump for Grandaddy) was a great show. My first introduction to Grandaddy (now one of my favorites) and an especially good performance by Elliott.
It's a bittersweet memory now, of course.
