Tickets on sale saturday. Does anybody know anything about the line-up this year?
-
supposedly getting announced in an hour? (according to threads on their site)
-
i'm sure it'll be the usual mix of bands people cared about 15-20 years ago and bands people won't care about at all in 2-3 years.

isnt that like 95% of all bands though?
-
yeah, it is. but you don't have to pay hundreds of dollars and stand in the desert with 40,000 other people to hear most of them.

BookerT is pretty spot on... I only see FF, BP, and MMJ lasting past the three marks if they can deliver an album or two that sets them apart from the pack. Sigur Ros is in it for the long run as they are jam music for indie set. Paul Oakenfeld has been kicking around since the 80s,but where outside the UK does he sell his records/remixes. His name will ensure he gets paid heaps in the US to "spin" whatever they are calling trance that week. The rest gathering lots of dust in cutout bins...
-
Tool would be pretty cool to see.

but Kosmo, could you pick 80 bands for a 2-day festival that are not only in their prime but bands that will release 10 albums and be adored for decades? there arent even 80 bands like that on earth. maybe say 30. and out of those 30, 10 are probably not touring. 6 probably played last year and probably half of the other 14 will be there this year.
Tricky is also on the bill. and Common, while a rapper, has plenty of staying power....
has beens and never will be's are 90% of the industry.
-
no but then again i'm not a festival promoter and have little desire to spend any time in the desert or tn with a bunch of people listening to crappy sound.
-

Isn't that the main reason most people attend such fetes?
-
Actually I could probably pull together some bands that have out lasted the 2-3 year mark, problem is only a couple thousand people would be interested in 80% of the bands on the bill. More would turn out for those band with larger label backing...

yes, while Kosmochella would not be a profitable concert! as someone whos been to Coachella 3 times though. the most bands i have seen in one year is 26 and i think in all 3 years i have sat through a total of 3 bands i didnt want to see (Bright Eyes, Jack Johnson and Groove Armada).
for example in 2004 on day 1 i saw ...
The Sounds, the Stills, Q and Not U, Beck, International Noise Conspiracy, Death Cab for Cutie, Mark Farina, Pixies, Radiohead, Electric Six and Kraftwerk.
hardly a bunch of "cut-out bin" bands.
-
to clarify my point many people attending such festivals aren't generally interested in seeing artists/bands they have never heard of, which might lineup would contain several of.
I didn't say all bands were cutout worthy, but The Sound and Electric Six would certainly be definitive choices for being cut-out artists.
-
yes, Coachella is not very indie.
-
ok, here are a bunch more.....and no, not enough for me to go this year, i dont think....

-
granted there are a some acts on the second day i'd like to see on this list, but wont feel incomplete if i miss them... TV on the Radio, Coldcut, Phoenix, Seu Jorge, The Dears, The Magic Numbers, Los Amigos Invisibles, Jazzanova,
what i don't understand is surely the acoustics at a place like the washington convention center, can't be any worse than a huge outdoor festival, why can't they setup big festivals in places like that? or trim down the number of acts per day and do it at Merriweather and I'm there!
-
people like to be outside Kosmo!!!!
i think seth should totally do a festival at Merriweather. all day , 2 stages, maybe even 3.
i am sure he could sell the place out. even charging a steep price.
-
Yeah, almost all of the bands I want to see will be touring at some point this Spring. So I'll catch them at smaller places.
Congrats to The Octopus Project for getting on the bill. They are terrific. That exposure should help them quite a bit.

Yawn.

In the dead of winter? In pouring rain? ;)
-
Actually a outdoor festival in the winter would be great fun to read the reactions to....
The audience was so dead... you couldn't even hear them clapping or cheering at the end of songs.
NOBODY was dancing!
The bands played almost as if they were frozen stiff...
The highlight was when Prince's tongue got stuck to his guitar.

Can't say I'm wowed enough to go this time. Even if they announce Roxy Music w/Eno and Smashing Pumpkins, it's still not really enough to get me out there this year.

The Pumpkins would get me there. Roxy Music, probably not.
-
Wow, that's a sad statement.

Nah. I'm from Chicago. Hometown loyalties.
-
well i'm definitely out.
which i don't mind.
while i'd like to get back out to california again, it's definitely not worth it for this.
i can use my money towards other stuff... radiohead, acl, something else.. i don't know.
i'm a bit relieved the lineup kind of sucks.
-
So you're going to see Marty Casey and the Lovehammers open for INXS in February?

Touche. But I remain a diehard Smashing Pumpkins fan.

Does the fact that Daft Punk got added to this bill make any difference to anybody?
-
Are they from Chicago too? ;)

it really shouldn't... but i'm back on the fence now.
-
I was actually planning on going this year, based on past lineups and kinda getting taken in by one of the rumors, but bleh....I think I'll save the money, see some more shows then I normally do and go to bumbershoot again
-

yes, i called my friend in LA and i am buying my plane tickets tonight. its really a dream come true. :)
-
wow, another boring line-up at coachella. not only have i seen the six bands i like at better festivals, they are all touring or have just toured through this area.
i'll be at terrastock in providence the week before.
-

portishead?
-
Massive Attack just added....now I'm kinda jealous!!
-
But isn't Massive Attack down to just one member, and given the wide range of singers on the records who would they bring along, dosen't sound like much of an event.
-
I would love to go to Terrastock.
-
If Massive Attack played, I'd be there to check it out just because. I still think it would be interesting to see/hear what they do.
-
a suprising number of those bands are playing at bonnaroo, as well as coachella. and there will be no widespread panic at bonnaroo, nor dave matthews or any other hippie rubbish, and its alot closer than CA. so thats probably where you can find me.

But I heard Port-A-Shed WILL be headlining both Bonnaduceroo AND Coach-Hella.

horace andy was there when i saw them (this was like '98 though). i would imagine he'd be there. then they usually have some no-name female to cover the tracey thorn/elizabeth fraser/etc parts.

its funny that you call it Coach-hella. thats what we've been calling it ever since i first went in 2003. I am not often in California and the amount of people saying "hella" was amusing to me. nevermind, you had to be there i guess.

Madonna confirms for dance tent.
can you say packed like Sardines!

that's bizarre. i guess this thing will sell out after all. good thing we got our hotel when we did (like 4 days ago).

yeah, but i remember selling out as being the worst part of Coachella. so so crowded. hopefully its not 108degrees again.
-
I thought this was some sort of "alternative" festival.

And what kind of cheap shot is this at Matisyahu? I think he's cooler than 2/3 of the bands on the bill...typical pitchdork stupidity:
As previously reported, Coachella will feature every cool band on the planet, as well as Matisyahu and She Wants Revenge.

i agree. the less crowded the better of course. but the only other i went was 2004, so i'll be used to it i guess.
i pray it's a nice mild 85 degrees that weekend.

i read that as sarcasm. Matisyahu and SWR are THE cool bands of the year. isnt Matisyahu playing at every possible festival on earth so far, and SWR is too.
why do you still read pitchfork? thats pretty 2003 isnt it?
-
You're right on that one. But what other websites can give me snot nosed writing by young kids that I can flip the bird to and feel superior to in my music taste?

I think some die-hard Madonna fans will go to Coachella, but that being said, I have a hard time envisioning it selling out any time within the next few days. I think a lot of Madonna fans probably don't even know what Coachella IS.

i thought you felt superior to everyone in your musical taste.
but you're right, pitchfork gives indie a bad name!
