DreamWorks Near Music Deal with Universal
Fri Oct 31, 3:19 AM ET  Add Entertainment - Reuters to My Yahoo!

 By Sue Zeidler

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - DreamWorks SKG is near a deal to sell DreamWorks Records to Vivendi Universal SA's Universal Music Group for an estimated $100 million, according to a person familiar with the matter.

DreamWorks, formed in 1994 by Steven Spielberg (news), David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg, is also contemplating the sale of its music publishing arm, the source said.

A spokeswoman for Universal Music, the world's largest music company, had no immediate comment. Officials for DreamWorks were not immediately available.

The proposed deal comes just weeks after Universal Music said it planned to shed about 1,350 people from its workforce in response to the record industry's difficult market conditions amid massive online piracy that has pushed CDs sales sharply lower.

Universal said the restructuring aimed to save $200 million a year. DreamWorks approached Universal about a sale well before the restructuring was announced, the source said.

The Dreamworks-Universal tie-up also comes as several other big music companies, under pressure to slash costs and build scale, proceed with merger discussions.

German media company Bertelsmann has said it was in talks with Sony, while Time Warner Inc. and EMI Group Plc (news - web sites) are said to be contemplating a joint venture.

Additionally, Warner's Warner Chappell music publishing arm is on the block.

DreamWorks Records, according to industry insiders, has never risen to the level first envisioned by its founders who installed veteran record industry executive Mo Ostin at the helm.

DreamWorks's roster includes artists like Toby Keith (news) and pop singer Nelly Furtado (news).

DreamWorks and Vivendi Universal have long enjoyed a working relationship. Universal Music's distribution arm has been distributing music for DreamWorks Records.

Additionally, Geffen, a music industry mogul, sold Geffen Records to Universal several years ago. And Spielberg has produced some of Universal's biggest hits over the last 30 years, including "Jaws" to "Jurassic Park."

The source said Universal plans to fold DreamWorks Records into its Interscope Geffen A&M Unit, which is overseen by Jimmy Iovine.

Because they brew far superior beer to yankville so you'd better be nice to them or they might stop exporting it down and we'll have to drink the bat-piss you all brew down this way.

yeah, fire your current employees, and then buy another record label....my question is, when people see something thats wrong, why do they just sit there are take it up the ass?

My uncle worked for Universal and they canned him 2 years ago, stating, "his position was being dissolved"   well, he was a sales-exec!!! go figure.

"The proposed deal comes just weeks after Universal Music said it planned to shed about 1,350 people from its workforce in response to the record industry's difficult market conditions amid massive online piracy that has pushed CDs sales sharply lower. "

What I love is they take no responsibility for the problem even though the core of this is (1) they gouge on the price of CDs and (2) they have been putting out crap.  But hey it is the other guy's fault.

that paragrah has countless takes, and they are all bad.  I mean, its like, if i broke my arm and cut my leg off to fix the problem.  How did these people get to be in charge in the first place.
Lets fire sales people and then complain cause we have bad sales.   hehehe, kinda funny to me.

Yeah. That's like when I use to work for a travel wholesaler. The manager told the big idiot at the top that we needed more employees. He claimed we weren't making enough sales to justify another person. The idiot couldn't get it through his head that we were losing sales because there weren't enough people in the office to handle all the sales coming in. I know for a fact that they lost many sales because the office was understaffed so the retail agents gave up and were going elsewhere. In fact, I finally gave up and went retail and often used other wholesalers for the some of the same reasons.
