Sept 6-9:
Haircut 100
NKOTB
ABC
The English Beat
-
The English Beat is a nice choice.
-
Haircut 100, ABC and The Beat are all great ones for me.
Japan would also be a good one, but I don't think they made it that big over here so there's probably no chance.
Thanks for the info....now if I can only remember the times, not having this Tivo you speak of!

I never heard of Japan, are they typical 80's? I might be interested in that one.

Have you ever heard of David Sylvian? He was the lead singer....they had two fine albums 'Japan' and 'Tin Drum'
They are very 80's, but deeper than your usual stuff, with an definate asian influence...hence the name.

wire train. . .i saw them in concert sometime around 1992. i still have one of their cds too.
-
it's weird they filmed a "reunited" concert and everything in Jan 2003, and nothing came of it. guess their story wasn't compelling enough. damn those bands with their fueding brothers.

I'll have to google them cause I'm sure you can't find anything in the CD stores around here.
-
Hmmm...I thought I read somewhere that they filmed episodes for Vixen, The Motels, and Scandal as well...

I definitely read elsewhere that a Vixen episode was taped. Maybe they tape them far in advance and roll out so many at a time.

I actually bought that album for 25c yankee in Singapore. And it was on cassette not 8-track, even I'm too young for 8-tracks aren't I? Never owned one anyway.
-
This would be an 8-track to own!

Yeah, I know they taped a Vixen episode. My friend in LA was at the concert that was taped for it. So I don't know what happened to it. I also heard rumors of a Thompson Twins one too.

Wow, that would be a shocker, I had they didnt leave on such good terms. I think the third person felt like....um......A third wheel.

There was a "Where are they now?" on them in the 90s on MTV or VH1. Two of them had moved to New Zealand to raise a family while the third (the third wheel) stayed in the UK to produce.
-
guess we'll have to wait for the dvd to come out...

They will go down as one of the absolute worst live concerts I ever had the misfortune to suffer through.
But I did see Ian Dury and the Blockheads the following week, which was absolutely one of the best live concerts I've ever had the fortune to be blessed with.
The ying and the yang of mankies life!!! :)

Maybe not. In the mid-90s, two-thirds of the group (the husband & wife) had some moderate success in clubs as the electronic-leaning group Babble. They released two albums, both of which appear to now be out of print.
-
japan is fabulous, and David Sylvian is just amazing, one of my favorites. But, to tell the truth, I'd only be interested in seeing the story of Sylvian....
i will love the ABC and English Beat shows. Haircut 100 had a couple excellent songs, but they were such a blip as a band....did they even have two albums?
-
haircut 100 managed two records, nick heyward the main haircut had several solo records. from what i remember nick had for being a odd bird...
edit.... Nick Heyward recorded only one record with haircut 100 before splitting. guess which one is the better of the two.
so which line-up of ABC are they reforming? the orginial four piece lineup, or the line up circa "how to be a zillionaire" which was really just the fry/white duo with the two odd additions that looked liked they belonged in deee-lite.

The original 'Lexicon of Love' line-up.
-
Yeah, Lexicon of Love. Only way to go....I love Martin's voice...

I didnt even realize Nick Heyward had been in a band. I use to listen to this album a lot in high school.

I still have it but have not listened to it much since '94 probably. I use to really love it.

*bump*
The new shows begin airing tonight...first up: Haircut 100. The show lasts an hour, so that's a good sign. :)

From Entertainment Weekly (http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,688817_3|103005||0_0_,00.html)
Bands Reunited
Group Therapy
VH1 struggles to get ''Bands Reunited'' -- The second season of the reality show has a more difficult time getting the former members of faded '80s acts to perform together again
Joey McIntyre doesn't know it yet, but he's about to get punk'd. . . VH1-style. The baby-faced ex-New Kid on the Block thinks he's sitting down for a routine press junket at a trendy lower-Manhattan lounge to promote his new film ''Tony n' Tina's Wedding.'' But just 15 minutes into the meeting, his interviewer, VH1's Aamer Haleem, smoothly goes in for the kill with a disarming, well-oiled sell. One member of New Kids has already agreed to appear on VH1's ambush reality show, ''Bands Reunited'' -- and Joey, do you really want to be the one who denies your loyal fans one last chance to hear the band? Joey is all smiles, then drops his own bomb: Thanks, but no thanks. Well aware that many former ''Tiger Beat'' pinups aren't eager to embrace their poppy pasts, Haleem is slightly jarred but undeterred. He launches a half-hour counteroffensive, yet McIntyre remains firm. ''Good luck,'' he says politely. ''I'm always available. . . to talk on the phone.''
In the unruly and always unpredictable world of ''Bands Reunited,'' persuading faded pop stars to revisit their heydays is no small feat. While the show's first season averaged a paltry 500,000 viewers, it generated strong buzz and boosted VH1's time-slot average by 33 percent -- all enough for the network to order another 10-episode cycle of the docudrama/talent show. (The first episode premieres Monday, Sept. 6, at 10 p.m.)
The bizarrely transfixing spectacle of reassembling random '80s relics like Berlin, Klymaxx, and Kajagoogoo catapulted the series to immediate cult status. But executive producer Julio Kollerbohm believes viewers are responding to the universal theme of mending fractured relationships. ''These bands are like dysfunctional families that haven't spoken in sometimes 10 to 20 years. They're making peace with that period of their lives,'' he says. ''Even if [the reunion doesn't happen], it's going to make for good TV.''
Good TV, in this case, requires an insane amount of planning -- season 2 took nearly 10 months. The producers make a list of every mildly successful pop act from the last 30 years (success, of course, is relative: season 1's Dramarama, anyone?) and begin weeks of research to determine if a reunion is feasible. This includes scouring the Internet and discreetly feeling out band members' old friends and associates. Once the producers decide to ambush a band, patience is key. ''It's almost like 'Groundhog Day,''' explains host Haleem, '''cause we go through the same thing over and over again, hiding out in a parking lot for five hours, looking at our feet, waiting for them to come home from their job.'' Indeed, the 12-person crew criss-crosses states and continents on a daily basis. ''Our lives are in constant flux,'' Haleem insists. ''A few days ago we were supposed to be going to New York, Wisconsin, Chicago, and Hawaii in quick succession, and all of that has gone out the window.''
When, say, a certain New Kid thwarts the crew members' hard work, they activate Plan B, which involves sweet-talking, begging, and flowers. But even the bribes don't always work, judging from first-season episodes in which Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Squeeze failed to stage a reunion show. (Efforts to reassemble the Commodores and Shalamar for this season collapsed when their respective stars, Lionel Richie and Jody Watley, dinged VH1.) Without spoiling any endings, we can say that season 2 includes episodes chronicling ABC, the Motels, English Beat, Haircut 100, and New Kids.

speak for yourself... my life hasn't been the same since 12:30pm when the show first aired yesterday. my yard has become a shrine in order that the gods intervene in this matter.

It would be more like "hangin' low" at that age. ;) WTF was up at the end with the super-fans crying and saying how they missed the guys...and the show was taped this year? Eeesh.
-
based on quick skim of comments on the vh1 forum, one would think the earth stopped when donnie said no....
-
Having been scolded about posting episode spoilers before since I can watch the noon broadcast of the show...
You can add Martin Fry w/ ABC to the list of shows I'd like to see. Martin's voice is in great shape and from his website it appears he has a fine group backing him. It's shame drummer David Palmers is off playing with that ponce Rod Stewart but the moolah is better than any full time gig with ABC that is for sure. Shame that the other two didn't at least chat as a group...

I know! That was a shame.
Martin Frye was always one of my favorite voices in rock/pop (I also really love Jeff Heiskell's voice -- from the Judybats). I didn't think Martin sounded in full voice, but I'm sure he's hitting it now if he's back on the road. It's kind of amazing they only give them a day to rehearse.
And it was pretty fun to have the Kajagoogoo guy playing with them!

Geeee, Martin Fry or Rod Stewart? Martin Fry or Rod Stewart? Martin Fry or Rod Stewart? I'd say that was a pretty easy choice for David Palmer to make.
-
no spoiler on the english beat show... but i recommend it for anyone interested in the early days of the uk punk and ska scene
-
I'm really digging this series, they do a most excellent job of providing the history of the bands early days and the scenes they were involved.
I was fascinated as Dave Wakeling and Rankin' Roger went over the early days of the band. The idea of having a party with one dj spinning punk on side of the room and switching with a dj spinning ska would have been fab.
However it was Saxa who completely stole the show, just how cool would it be to hang with him... This might be my most favorite episode yet.
-
does anyone know if they plan on repeating these episodes, much like they did with the first go-round of episodes? I completely missed all of the second round.
-
I thought it was pretty cruel walking these guys into a room where they thought the others were waiting
having promoted most of those bands back then, and seeing how they look now...whoa
does this mean I am getting old too?
-

They're going to have another 'series' of four to six shows, so I'll bet at some point there will be a Bands Reunited Marathon to get the buzz going, just like last time for the 'second series' of shows. It's BH-1, at some point you'll *always* get to see their shows.
