Paul Hamm Asked to Give Up Gold Medal
By EDDIE PELLS
AP Sports Writer
ATHENS, Greece - Gymnastics officials asked Paul Hamm to give up his gold medal as the ultimate show of sportsmanship, but the U.S. Olympic Committee told them to take responsibility for their own mistakes.
In a dispute over scores that has turned into a political squabble, the head of the International Gymnastics Federation suggested in a letter to Hamm that giving the all-around gold medal to South Korea's Yang Tae-young "would be recognized as the ultimate demonstration of fair play by the whole world."
FIG president Bruno Grandi tried to send the letter Thursday night to Hamm through the USOC, but the USOC refused to deliver it.
In a letter back to Grandi, USOC secretary general Jim Scherr called the request "a blatant and inappropriate attempt on the part of (FIG) to once again shift responsibility for its own mistakes and instead pressure Mr. Hamm into resolving what has become an embarrassing situation for your federation."

I doubt he'll ever have to work at Home Depot after this, hell the book alone will be worth millions. Not bad for a worthless piece of junk.

Is he gay? Is he related to Mia Hamm?
-
If it was because the judges gave bad scores to the Korean when he performed better than Hamm (like that ice dancing fiasco or whatever it was)I would say tough shit. But it was because of a mathmatical error, so I think the result should be switched.
The endorsements alone will make him a fortune after this...even if he does the right thing and gives it up, some company will still make an ad camapign out of it.

I'm sure he'll be dissin' himself to make extra money on some comedy shows like SNL and Mad TV also.

Is he related to Mia Hamm?
No. His name is actually pronounced differently like "palm with H instead of P" not like "ham" sandwich.

well, i don't think that's techincally right. . the judges started at the wrong starting score for the korean, so it was the judges' fault, not a mathematical error. the starting score, if i'm correct, is posted before the performance, so the koreans saw what their starting score was, and should have brought it up either before the routine or immediately after the routine, which they did not do.
nevertheless, there was some shady scoring going on all throughout the gymnastic performances. . .
btw, i don't think a gold medal is a worthless piece of junk, since it's made out of gold (closed today at $414.50 an ounce). not only that, but imagine how much it would go for on ebay!
-
he shouldn't give it back but if he does give into the unfair pressure put on him in order for them to shut up he deserves a silver or bronze or whatever.
-
Why is it:
Paul Hamm (pronounced "hom")
But:
Mia Hamm (pronounced "ham")
;)
Cheers
DJ Medusa.

because they want to fuck with announcers and people like us. :D
nothing makes an announcer more uncomfortable then not knowing a name, then worst is thinking you know it but don't.
-
I love olympic times....seeing all the poor local announcers pronounce names they'll never know, and look bad doing it
of course, they look bad anyway.....

It's actually gold-plated silver.

Apparently, somewhere between $2000 and $4000:

i read somewhere that during a track and field event, the english announcer was announcing one of the american athletes, mula something. . .right after he said, one of the greek announcers started yelling at the english announcer. apparently, mula is a greek term for a certain part of the body. . .so now, they are pronouncing her name myula. . .

Don't know if Hamm is gay or not, but having been on the same Delta Shuttle flight last night from Boston to NYC, I can tell you that he's like 5'2 and looks like he's 11 years old.
-
You guys really think they're gay? Why? I don't see it.
Maybe i'm a bit jaded since i'm a girl.

Don't know, don't care....just thought "homo Hamm" had a bit of a ring to it, with him being a total bitch about the whole medal fiasco.
They're a little effeminate to say the least, which means they're absolute babe-magnets going from the boys the young girls go for these days.

True, but I can't think of any gay reference that goes with "S. Korean"
Technically, he didn't lose.

Hopefully this (http://apnews.myway.com/article/20040830/D84PIB001.html) takes the attention away from the Paul Hamm controversy.
-
