why? judging by what i saw, they were taking these games seriously. they just got outplayed.

really? didnt the whole thing start out with guys missing practice or a meeting or something?
and i dont call 60whatever% from the FT line taking things seriously. or being outplayed.
and the 30%(if that) from the 3-pt line, which was closer that normal, was probably not all contested shots.
i will give the guys credit, they at least took it seriously enough to GO. which is more than you can say for the rest of that sad bunch of millionaires we call the NBA.
-
Yeah I give them credit for at least going. Like you said, they are rich so they didnt need to waste their summer. I don't think going in they were gonna be known for their free throw shooting. I mean Tim Duncan alone is close to 55% lifetime and I'm sure he was fouled alot. Anyways, there will never be a Dream Team like the first, the name should have ended there.

can someone, anyone, please give me the name of another athlete who just decided they didnt feel like being in the Olympics and playing for thier country. besides an American. just one
and drug scandals dont count
so you are rich. so no need to waste time representing your country? is that really how it goes?

i'm not talking about how it started. i'm going on what i saw from the games.
so they had shitty free-throw and 3-point shooters. i don't know how that's related to them not taking it seriously.
i don't understand the animosity towards NBA players. you don't think they worked hard to get there?
-
We have no idea. We're Doodles. We pay no attention to the activities of athletes from other countries.

not hard enough. do you really think Puerto Rico, Lithuania, AND Argentina all outplayed them?
all 3 of them?
whatever, weren't you getting sick of winning every damn year anyway?
-
I don't pay attention to basketball. The original Dream Team dominated, but I thought the Lithuanian Deadheads were far more interesting.

yeah. what's so hard to believe about that? this US team didn't have one good pure shooter on the lineup. international rules practically forces teams to live/die by the 3-pt shot.
i couldn't care less if they never won another international game. i just felt the need to defend a bunch of millionaires i don't know. sorry.

Sue Holloway, Canada, and there are 210 other Canadians that I know of. I can think of hundreds of others from Japan, China and West Germany too.

Hey, the Canucks invented the game so you can't really expect too much from the doodles, even though they claim the sport as their own....in which case it sucks to be third (at best) in one of your national pastimes and not even qualify in your other.
Tee hee, tee hee, ha ha ha hahahahahaha.
At least your girls do well in their sports, even without the help of drugs or judges.

Lance Armstrong, but that was so he could spend time with his children after the tour, so is completely understandable.

And had the Canadian Basketball team even qualified for the Olympics, I doubt Jamal Magloire would have shown up to represent his country. He surely hasn't show up for qualifying.

Oh yeah, how did I miss him? Peja (Pedrag) Stojakovic of Serbia and Montenegro.

and vlade, too i think.
the rest of the world plays better than they did even 4 years ago. sorry, if you play together for 6 years or whatever its going to take a HUGE disparity in talent to lose to a team that's been together for 3 weeks. its really hard to learn how to play defense with new people, especially. plus different rules...i think 'not trying' is a knee-jerk explanation
-
I BET IF IT WAS A PLATNIUM OR DIAMOND MEDAL INSTEAD OF GOLD THE TEAM WOULD HAVE BEEN A LOT BETTER.
this year they dodn't have the comlementery white guy to pass the ball or shot threes. thats why they lost.
did any of you see their boat they get to live on. That thing is worth more then a medal. It is straight up P-I-M-P! :D
i think Mtv or ESPN2 can have a reality show where they travel the country holding open tryouts to create a NATIONAL TEAM. Every ghetto in this country would go nuts. It could be hosted by MJ and or charles barkley....

From the Mail Bag:
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/040827 (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/040827)
Q: Could you please write a rebuttal to Jason Whitlock's Column on Page 2 (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=whitlock/040826) this week? I never thought I'd read such unfounded crap by a Page 2 columnist. He called you and every other white person a racist for cheering against the U.S. hoops team (because, of course, there were no African-Americans who filled out the Page 2 poll asking whether you are cheering against the U.S., right?), ignoring the fact any fan of the NBA and basketball in general would want the U.S. team to lose so that Stern and company chose an actual team for the next Olympics ... and make it so we don't have to watch Marion chucking up airballs, or hear Carmelo bitch about his lack of PT.
--Jay Detsky, Toronto, Ontario
Sports Guy: Wait, you're telling me that you didn't expect that column from someone this week? I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner; you had an all-black team taking heat for three solid weeks before someone finally played the race card. Geez, Ralph Wiley would have written that column before the Nightmare Team even arrived in Athens.
I thought it was a good column, actually. Whitlock took a controversial position, argued it and made a solid case. That's what a columnist is supposed to do. My biggest problem was how he played the "Shut up and support your country" card, which is fine and all, except this is how we ended up spending 13 years in Vietnam. He also ignored the bigger picture, something I tackled nearly a month ago -- how USA Basketball wasted yet another chance to build the best possible team from scratch, choosing to slap together an All-Star team strictly for marketing purposes. This resentment towards the Nightmare Team wasn't a black/white thing; this was about an unimaginative style of basketball that fans don't like watching. They had a chance to change this -- for the better -- with the 2004 USA team. And they didn't. That's why we're ticked off.
Am I rooting against them? Yes. I want them to lose. It's for a greater good. If they win the gold medal, we'll be back here in four years with another All-Star team. And besides, the Olympics aren't about following your country, they're about following sports. Five years from now, I won't remember how many medals the United States won, but I'll remember watching that Greek hurdler standing on the podium -- her eyes filled with tears, her body quivering, the gold medal pressed to her chest -- as the entire stadium belted out Greece's national anthem. Now that was a moment.
Best of all, she was white.
Just kidding. I couldn't resist.
(Quit cringing, I was just kidding. Really.)

Just this weekend I was telling my wife how all this anti-Dream Team hoopla was a thinly disguised way for politically correct liberals to acceptably demonstrate the racism that is inherant in all of us...
But anyway, if the NBA players were all as hot as the guys from Italy and Argentina, the NBA would be a lot better to watch.

Yup. I have to many friends in New England, so i have to prepare early. Cause when the Yankees win, they celebrate like they've done this a million times. When the Red Sox finally win, all there gonna be sayin' is we finally beat the Yankees. They won't even mention who they actually beat. It's the fact they beat the Yankees is all their concerned about. And don't call me crazy cause you know its true. And me growing up in New England, I know first hand.

in case you haven't bothered to do the research on bill simmons, he was one of the writers for the jimmy kimmel show, and i don't think he's ever called himself a sportswriter - maybe a humourist, but not a sportswriter. his pieces on weekend in vegas with his friends are excellent.

which you should just let us do, cause you onbviously cant beat the national league teams anymore.

What makes you think I'm unhappy just because, like millions of others, some even American, I have a dislike for Americas "dream team"? I wanted your girls to win the gold in football because they are a hardworking team of class individuals.
As a European I'll tell you why American athletes are generally disliked. It's because they are so arrogant when they win, with the showboating etc. and cannot give any credit to their opponents...and when they lose there's always some weak-arsed excuse for why...the shorter three point line, the different lane, the fact that foreign teams pass from the chest!!!! (WHAT THE F*CK?)
I know there's exceptions to this, but generally speaking that's how they are, because American society has drilled into them they are the best and can basically do whatever they want because they're famous athletes.

I'll admit to crying when Felix Sanchez won the 400m with hurdles..first time our national anthem was ever played at an Olympic ceremony..and I was one of millions..

The president of the IOC made a good point. He noted that everyone loves an underdog. The U.S., as the strongest, most powerful nation on earth, is never the underdog and thus, is never likely to be the crowd favorite in international competition. He further noted that much of the animosity also stems from envy.
The Dream Team deserved to lose. Their apparent spokesperson is Iverson - an ex-con gangster who can't get his hat on straight and who can't even be bothered to show up for practice at his full-time, multi-million dollar gig. I think most of the NBA guys saw the Olympic team as an obligation or a smart PR move recommended by their agents. I think the games meant more to the Argentines, Lithuanians and Italians than to the U.S. players.
The U.S. women's basketball captain pointed out that since the WNBA has never really taken off, the Olympics are the pinnacle for the women. They have practiced together and played international ball together for years. No surprise that they fared much better than the men.
All in all, I'd say this was the Olympics of the U.S. women (in all sports). Not only did they win a bushel of medals, but they were far superior sportsmen on and off the fields.

Why even refer to them as "The Dream Team" anymore? Till they live up to their name and the guys who kicked butt before them (Jordan, Byrd, Drexler etc.) let's drop it.

Two words for you, buddy. Tim Duncan.
The guy has more talent and class than Iverson ever will.

Thank You, there's only one Dream Team, why they continued it is beyond me. The only way it could have been called Dream Team this year is if Shaq, Kobe, Garnett and McGrady were on it. Otherwise, It's just another street pick up basketball team.
-
It would have been fun to root against the US men's b-ball team, but I just didn't care enough one way or the other to do so.

You gotta love a team with more illegitimate children than college degrees.

The only real dream team was the team of Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Air Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Sir Chales Barkley, The Admiral David Robinson, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Hakeem, Drexler, etc. in 1992. That was a dream team. This team should be called "Who Wants To Put On A USA Basketball Jersey Team!"
-
like i said. the gold medal isn't pimp enough. they need paltnum with diamonds that spins.
they made them lose on purpose so next year real players would want to play. Needed to make it more interesting. winning by 43 isn't fun to watch...less ratings...
-
the last 2 paragraphs are the best....
the real dream team (http://www.nba.com/history/dreamT_moments.html)
NBA's Greatest Moments
The Original Dream Team
The original Dream Team, the U.S. basketball team that won the gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, was a phenomenon on and off the court. It mattered not that it dominated the Olympic competition, beating its eight opponents by an average of 44 points. What was important was that the Dream Team, the first U.S. Olympic team to include NBA stars, gave fans a glimpse of basketball at its finest, and an entire world responded.
Since 1992, basketball has exploded in popularity around the globe, rising to a place where it truly challenges soccer's status as the world's most popular sport. Much of that is due to the impact of the Dream Team, which attracted fans and followers wherever it went.
"It was," said Coach Chuck Daly, "like Elvis and the Beatles put together. Traveling with the Dream Team was like traveling with 12 rock stars. That's all I can compare it to."
And what a band it was. Start with three of the game's all-time greats: Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Add the irrepressible Charles Barkley for a little spice, as well as seven more NBA All-Stars: centers David Robinson and Patrick Ewing, power forward Karl Malone, swingmen Scottie Pippen, Chris Mullin and Clyde Drexler and point guard John Stockton. Complete the roster with Christian Laettner, the best college player of 1991-92 and a future NBA All-Star.
Opponents didn't have a chance, but they didn't care. One player, while trying to guard Magic Johnson, was seen frantically waving to a camera-wielding teammate on the bench, signaling to make sure he got a picture of them together.
"They knew they were playing the best in the world," reflected Daly after the team won the gold medal with a 117-85 win over Croatia on August 8, 1992. "They'll go home and for the rest of their lives be able to tell their kids, 'I played against Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.' And the more they play against our best players, the more confident they're going to get.
"Finally there will come a day -- I'm not saying it will happen anytime soon, mind you, but it's inevitable that it will happen -- that they will be able to compete with us on even terms. And they'll look back on the Dream Team as a landmark event in that process."
-
Put a few white guys on the team like they had in 92, and we'll be back in top form.
