Title: What's up with Chris Whitley?
Post by: ggw on November 11, 2005, 04:23:00 pm
I was thinking about Whitley last night, when I was at iota.

His website (http://www.chriswhitley.com) bears bad news:

I've gotten tons of email and IM's regarding Chris's health, Chris is in fact very very ill. He is not however in the confines of a cold stark hospital room but is in a comfortable warm home with hospice care at his disposal, surrounded by much love, light and support of family 24 hours a day. I felt all his friends and fans have a right to know what's going on. At the request of Chris, me, his daughter Trixie and the rest of the family we would only like to ask people to respect Chris's privacy as well as our privacy at this time. I promise we will be releasing updates on Chris's condition in the next couple weeks.

 Much Love,
 Daniel Whitley & Susann Buerger

wow...that's tragic.
he cancelled his summer tour due to illness, but this...fuck

isn't hospice care for terminal illness?

if you've seen Chris on tour - something's been wrong for a while. he has seemed to physically deteriorate.

i just had this weird deja vu feeling of being @ the hfestival on the floor when a friend who arrived late told me the news about jeff buckley drowning.

this would be very bad news. i hope it is not as dire as it sounds.

I read "hospice" with a foreboding feeling also.

Last time I saw him was at the end of last year and I thought he looked better than he had in a while.

His messageboard contains no details beyond a lot of allusions to "substance" problems, but those reports have been dogging him for years.

I hope it isn't as serious as it sounds.  He's an amazing talent and a exceedingly nice guy.

Going by his photo on his past albums I was under the impression he'd been dead for a few years.

I've been thinking about his lately as well, hoping he's okay. I knew the drinking had been an issue off and off this year.

Chris's Health #2

Thanks to all for the kind words for my brother Chris and my family. For those who are not aware, hospice in home care is in fact for the terminally ill. A while ago Chris was formally diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in its advanced stages. As I type this Chris is resting peacefully and is in little physical pain, at one point today he grabbed my hand firmly as I spoke to him, looked at me and smiled his usual knowing smile but that is all and that was quite enough. I wish I could say more to ease your minds but I cant and im truly sorry, living this and writing this is the hardest thing ive ever had to do in my
 life without question.

 Love and light,
 Daniel

Just unbelievable. Makes me terribly sad.
He's so young - And so talented.
 A huge loss.
I'm very happy that I got a chance to see him many times over the years. Appreciate anything you really like/love - It doesn't last.

Dirt Floor has never sounded better:

Breaking rocks all day on the avenue
its hard to unearth anything thats true
soon I am gonna loose these rags and run
Returning to the wild where I'm from

There's miles of stone, jack hammer in my hand
 There's compromises, I cant comprehend
soon I am gonna drop this jack and run
Returning to the wild where I'm from

i was in cleveland one random night many years back and went to the grog shop, because that seemed like one of the cooler clubs. there was some dude named chris whitley playing, and there only a few more dudes in the audience. but he really gave it his all and his set really blew me away -- this was around "din of ecstasy," which i know isn't the favored album of most of his fans, but he made some great noise that nite. and i always did dig that cover of "some candy talking." but yeah, that's how i became a fan. sad news.
