are there car receivers on the market with mp3 players built in them? i always hated jerry-rigged components [ipod externally plugged in] on my car stereo and refuse to buy anything with a cd player.  im convinced cds are on the way out and i wont buy anymore obsolete shit. best buy a year later still doesnt have any on market. wtf?

don't think cds are going anywhere soon, seeing as they still release new stuff on cassette... and until they offer for download uncompressed sound files for the same price, i'll be sticking with CDs and getting mp3s from eMusic for those records of casual interest.

Or .shn or .flac files. Would it kill a mp3 player designer to build in support for these file types?

i dont think the dumb huddled masses would giv a flyin eff or kno the diff. so for that reason i disagree with ya kosmo, after all, i am an ahole.

Yes, both Harddrive and MP3-CD models.
 
 The harddrive models are still fairly expensive, but the MP3-CD models can be had for under $150.
 
 How long are you going ot have your car though?  I wouldn't put a harddrive version in a car I wasn't planning on keeping for at least a decade.

Actually, it's because they're so dumb that they would know the difference.  It's the dumb ones that are slow to adapt to change.

i'm all digital at home now.  buy a CD, rip it to the computer and then i've gone this route:  
 
 http//www.slimdevices.com.  its a nice setup.  i havent actually played a CD at home in years.

Anyone who thinks CDs are going away hasn't experienced Itunes/Ipod's uniquely assholic brand of copy protection, where if you sync an Ipod with Itunes and the Ipod has songs on it that Itunes doesn't, the default is to wipe out the music on Ipod.  
 
 Itunes also builds limits into how you can use the files into every song you can purchase.
 
 AND in most cases, you pay the same price as you would have paid for the physical media!
