Title: the mtv "soul train" awards
Post by: walkonby on August 30, 2004, 02:57:00 pm
and here i thought rock music existed.  i guess rap artists were the only musicians putting out videos in 2004.  i did find it hysterical that the viewers choice awards, which is a representation of what the viewers of mtv want to see, had not a single rap video nominated.  hmm; interesting.

and please don't call me racist.  i'm not.  i listen to some rap, for some of it can actually be described as music . . . , but to have every category of ever category nothing but a jay-z vs. usher competition was completely ridiculous.

I have a friend that is black, so I am not a racist either.

Why even bring up race, are there not shite white rappers too? Has no one forgotten Northern State, I mean the Beastie Boys?

i'm not going to watch it.  but might give up in watch it in a couple of months....

i watched dead like me instead.  i love that show.  Showtime has the best shows.  bullshit, dead like me, and jerimiah(luck perry's show...i think)

i also saw a preview for the the new trey parker/matt stone movie.  it has action figures so trey can just do voices and doesnt have to attempt to act.

Don't forget Vanilla Ice! Without him we'd be at least a thousand punchlines fewer.   :p

And of course the worlds best rapper is a cracker, but the worlds greatest golfer is a brotha...so those cancel out I suppose.  ;)

"Greatest" and "rapper" are two words I wouldn't use in the same sentence.

i'm not sure if anybody in here but myself watched the thing, but i hung on until the end, because i waited...and waited...for the polyphonic spree to come on.  and they were introduced by mar. manson, who couldn't care a less about being there or the poly's at all, so blow him. blow him out mandy moore's douche bag. oh, and i only brought up the race thing because i thought i was going to beat someone to the punch.  i've never been sure weather to throw the beastie's into the "rap" world.  they play instruments and don't 100% rely on samples and stealing others' music to make their own.  plus the beastie boys promote non-violence and intelligence, something which lit' john and the ying-yang twins seem far from grasping beyond their chalices of crap.

yeah, amazing how all these artists travelled through time to hear the original sounds of 'paul's boutique', then went back in time and incorporated it into their music:

"Hoo-ha! Got them all in check." - "8th Wonder" by The Sugarhill Gang
"It's the Joint" - song of same title by Funky 4+1
"Shake Your Rump-ah" - from the Unity album by James Brown and Afrika Bambaataa
'Scratch' heard under "the most packinest", "your belief, chief" and at the end - "Could you be Loved" by Bob Marley
Additional beats from "Super Mellow" by Paul Humphrey from the album "The Drum Suite"
 Afrika Bambaataa's, "Jazzy Sensation"
After the chorus phrase "Shake Your Rump-a" there is a drum break with synth. The first two runthroughs, right before the rap starts again, the concluding drum fill is from "Good Time Bad Times" by Led Zepplin.
Beat is Harvey Scales's "Dancing Room Only" (from the lp hotfoot: a funque dizco opera, casablanca, 1977)
 Bong hit
Mostly taken from the "Car Wash" soundtrack by Rose Royce
Ronnie Laws, "Tell Me Something Good"
the disco call is from Foxy's "Get Off"
The main drum roll is from "Funky Snakefoot" by Alphonze Mouzon from the album "Funky Snakefoot"

and this is only off track 2.

Its like Gangsta rap for the not so hard, mum would not let us out after dark crowd, and the dis' pirates.....

Because mutiny on the bounty's what we're all about
I'm gonna board your ship and turn it on out
No soft sucker with a parrot on his shoulder
'Cause I'm bad gettin' bolder - cold getting colder
Terrorizing suckers on the seven seas
And if you've got beef - you'll get capped in the knees
We got sixteen men on a dead man's chest
And I shot those suckers and I'll shoot the rest

(chorus) Most illingest b-boy - I got that feeling
Cause I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'

Snatching gold chains - vicking pieces of eight
I got your money and your honey and the fly name plate
We got wenches on the benches - and bitties with titties
Housing all girlies from city to city
One for all and all for one
Taking out M.C.'s with a big shotgun
All for one and one for all
Because the Beastie Boys have gone A.W.O.L.
Friggin' in the riggin' and cuttin' your throat

Big biting suckers getting thrown in the moat
We got maidens and wenches - man they're on the ace
Captain Bly is gonna die when we break his face

maidens and wenches, is there a difference?

mark must of blacked out sarcasm from his dialogue understandings.  it's hard to float (keep up) in the river of sh**t that seems to be spewing.  reread the lyrics you just recited, and imagine ludacris or nelly even comprehending the definitions.

I know how you doodles think when you vote, so let me remind you.

THIS UPCOMING ELECTION IS VERY IMPORTANT, SO VOTE FOR THE MAN WHO WILL MAKE THE BEST PRESIDENT FOR ALL DOODLES, NOT JUST THE CORPORATIONS OR WEALTHIEST 1%.....WHOEVER HAS THE CUTEST DAUGHTERS IS NOT IMPORTANT.

Remember, vote wisely...and if you're a republican, vote early, vote often, like last time.

I wonder if there'll be a UN team overseeing the FL election to make sure there's no shenanigans in that banana republic.

Are you trying to say that rappers are illiterate?

Otherwise, I would still contend its Gangsta rap for pathetic people.

You're still woozy off of the painkillers, right?  Or are you confusing your genres?  Calling the Beastie Boys Gangsta rap is like calling Britpop "good."

Good and bad are personal judgements.

Gangsta rap is rap that advocates stealing, shooting and dis-respecting the female of the species. Try and find a definition of gangsta rap that the beasties do or did not fulfill, other than ethnicity.

You and a group of friends hanging out at Peterborough trainstation with your notebooks and binoculars are not considered a gang.

Ok I will spell it out.

Someone said that the beastie boys cannot be gangsta rap because they were not in a gang. I would contend that they fulfill the dictionary definition of a gang. But clearly Gangsta rappers only make up a small subset of gang members.

Gangsta rappers are not gang memmbers. They are millionairres selling themselves as gang members. Otherwise the dumb fucks that buy that type of "music" wouldn't buy their "music".

 Then they weren't 'brothas'!

BTW...this really happened at work today.

A bloke was in looking at some Ford Cobra 427 car we have for sale....anyway he had his two kids with him, a boy about age 6 and a girl about age 4. One of the employees, who just happens to be a black bloke (not a brotha) asked the little boy if he would like that car when he grows up. The kid replied with, "My dad told me I shouldn't talk to colored people"

 Sad but true.

Not really surprising considering the type of car he was interested in.

all i can say is that the stage being used for the red carpet show looked like a penis... ashlee simpson, hoobastank, and chaka khan can't hold a tune.  it's amazing what can be done with pro-tools and pitch correction.  and i only watched until six feet under came on...

now i've figured it out.  the beastie boys new video is never on bet, mtv jams or any "rap vide countdown show"  the damn thing is ONLY on the rock countdown; that's rock, not rap.  are they rappers according to black people?  do the beasties scare the establishment of what black people claim is their style of music?

God..., when i started this post, i actually considered that mtv mattered.  stupid me.  sorry.

BET and MTV Jams have played Beastie Boy videos before.

Doesn't really mean anything since MTV and BET are now both owned by Viacom.

I don't think so, but I doubt it would've mattered to him.

In a sad way it was funny, and like Joe said, "Can't blame the kid, he didn't come up with that idea on his own."

That's so true.

I use to hear a lot of the same kind of racist stuff from Black kids while I was teaching, except that it was anti-White. Generally speaking, the elementary kids were pretty innocent of it all and only mimicing their parents, or parent, or whatever authority figure they had in their lives. It wasn't until around Middle School that some of them started really understanding and really meaning what they were saying. That was downright scary!!!

My very favorite racial comments from them were when one of them would get pissed off at me and call me a White bitch. Then inveriably, some other student would say, "She ain't White! She's light-skinned."    This has happened to a lot of other White teachers too. Very odd. The funniest thing about it, for those who haven't met me, my skin looks pastie British white, my hair is bone straight and was dyed even lighter blonde than it is now and I have blue eyes. All in all, I understood it to be a very high compliment meaning that I was accepted as one of them even though these kids honestly didn't understand what they were saying.
