Is "boringly" a word? If so, we'll go with that.

Sorry there, but I still prefer Argentina. However, with Gerrard, Lampard, and these new players, for the first time in 20 years I see England as a serious candidate to the World Cup.

They should sign this guy to the US National Football team:

Amazing finish Mank.  Owen was destined to find the back of the net eventually after missing as many as he did.  Rooney was brilliant, and I miss Becks more and more every time I watch him.  United will have their hands full with Riqueleme though, I thought he was the best player on the pitch.

As for the US squad, it was a half squad really, using some of the players who play for European clubs.  It was quite obvious they don't play together very often.

A lot of what I read still expressed concern over weaknesses at the back.  Looking forward to Ashley Cole's return.

Let's just say that it's a good thing for the US team that they weren't playing against that other powerhouse from the UK (http://www.irishfa.com/) in a match that actually mattered (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/4212920.stm).

Hopefully we'll get a rematch against the two Irish teams during the world cup finals next year....oh, right, we won't will we??  :p

'Argentina need to cheat more', advises Ruggeri

BUENOS AIRES, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Former Argentina defender Oscar Ruggeri said on Monday that the current side needs to indulge in more time-wasting and gamesmanship.

Ruggeri, who played at two World Cups under Carlos Bilardo, a coach famous for his ruthless win-at-all-costs approach, said his country had become too European in their attitudes.

His comments came after Argentina conceded two late goals and lost 3-2 to England in a friendly on Saturday.

'They say that the Argentine player throws himself to the ground and wastes time and that the balls disappear when they're winning,' he said in a radio interview.

'But at international level, these little things can help you win the match and get through to the next round and we have to work on them.

'The coach (Jose Pekerman) has to spend three days working on these things. If they give away a free kick, the player should lie on the ground, so they bring on the doctor and the stretcher to slow down the game.'

'We have to slow the Europeans down,' he added. 'If there's three minutes to go and you're about to qualify, you don't want to continue playing on equal terms.'

Ruggeri, a rugged central defender, was in Argentina's World Cup winning team in 1986 as well as the 1990 team which finished runners-up and the 1994 team which was knocked out in the second round.

Ruggeri, who won 98 caps, then took up coaching but was less successful.

He resigned as coach of Mexico's UAG after losing his first six games in early 2003, then took charge of Independiente in his homeland but resigned less than four months later after being jeered and insulted by fans at a home game.

In 2004, he went to Spanish second division club Elche but was fired last May after 20 games. He returned to Mexico and joined America, the country's richest club, and this time lasted only six games.

I work with people in Trinidad and Tobago and today they weren't working because of the classification to the World Cup. Venerable, I won't get into statistics because it is a waste of time for something so obvious, soccer is the most popular sport of the world.

My guess is Celtic.  He's always wanted to end his career there.

Hey Mank, now that the shock and horror has subsided a little, is this a salary savings/enticement move to convince Ballack that he'll have little competition for a central mid-field spot at Old Trafford?

Looking at the table and the Gunners injury problems, it wouldn't look like that much of an upset, however sad it is for me to say.

 Six memorable Real-Barcelona league matches

MADRID, Nov 18 (Reuters) - Six memorable league matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona:

 1973-74 Real Madrid 0 Barcelona 5

Playmaker Johan Cruyff revolutionised a Barca team that had not won the league title in 14 years and led them to a crushing victory at the Bernabeu, a result regarded as Real's most humiliating defeat in their own stadium.

The Dutchman put his side 2-0 up with a brilliant solo effort. Picking the ball up in his own half, he weaved around a bemused defence before slotting the ball past keeper Mariano Garcia Remon from near the penalty spot.

Barcelona won the title with five games to spare. - - - -

 1984-85 Real Madrid 0 Barcelona 3

Barca took on a distinctly British tinge in the mid-1980s with new coach Terry Venables bringing Scotland striker Steve Archibald and then England's Gary Lineker and Wales's Mark Hughes to the Nou Camp.

Archibald, or 'Archigoles' as he became known, got off to a dream start when he scored one goal and had a hand in two more as Barca claimed an emphatic win at the Bernabeu. They cruised to victory in the league title race.

Two seasons later Lineker scored a hat-trick in Barca's 3-2 win over Real at the Nou Camp. - - - -

 1993-94 Barcelona 5 Real Madrid 0

Mercurial Brazil striker Romario grabbed a hat-trick as the Catalans, managed by former player Cruyff, crushed Real at the Nou Camp. Barca were handed their fourth title in a row when Deportivo Coruna defender Miroslav Djukic missed a last-minute penalty against Valencia in the final match of the season. - - - -

 1994-95 Real Madrid 5 Barcelona 0

A sweet victory for Real as they avenged their 5-0 defeat of the previous season with an equally conclusive win of their own at the Bernabeu.

Chile striker Ivan Zamorano got a hat-trick while Emilio Amavisca and Luis Enrique, who later became a Barca favourite when he moved to the Nou Camp, weighed in with the others. Real went on to win the league ahead of Deportivo. - - - -

 2003-2004 Barcelona 1 Real Madrid 2

The previous derby in Barcelona had been marred by incidents surrounding the return of former idol Luis Figo to the Nou Camp and his appearance on this occasion was no exception.

The Portugal midfielder got a vitriolic reception the first time he played there for Real in 2000 and was showered with missiles, including a pig's head, two seasons later.

This time he had the last word as he helped Real to a first league win at the Nou Camp in 19 years. Barca got their own back with a 2-1 victory at the Bernabeu later in the season. - - - -

 2004-2005 Barcelona 3 Real Madrid 0

Barca produced a sparkling display of fluent, attacking football to outclass their rivals at the Nou Camp.

Former Real player Samuel Eto'o, rejected by his old club at the start of the season, made the most of a defensive mix-up to open the scoring as he darted between Roberto Carlos and goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Dutchman Giovanni van Bronckhorst made it 2-0 after a slick passing move and Ronaldinho completed an emphatic win by smashing home a penalty after the livewire Eto'o was brought down in the area.

Mankie, again, what is going on in the UK with Beckham, unless the guy has never adapted to Spain, he seems a bench player for Notingham Forest or Leeds United. 0-3 in Madrid, had not seen this Barcelona superiority since the early nineties. Madrid, keep the Beckhams, Zidanes, Roberto Carlos, Rauls and so on, please do so!

Playmaker Riquelme 'out of Old Trafford clash'

MADRID, Nov 20 (Reuters) - Villarreal's Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme will miss the Champions League Group D clash against Manchester United on Tuesday, after collecting a thigh strain in training.

Riquelme joins strikers Diego Forlan and Antonio Guayre, and central defender Quique Alvarez, on the list of injured players not included for the trip to Old Trafford.

Villarreal top Group D with six points from four games and can qualify for the last 16 if they win. United are third with five points.

Okay;....where do I start? Juve have made a £7m, 18 month contract offer to Keane. What makes this even more interesting for the footie fans is that Viera is already there!    ;)

United need to do some serious shopping in the january sales, but thanks to the yanks burying them in debt, they simply don't have the money to get the players they need......a quality replacement for Keane, understudies for Scholes and Neville, and a season long replacement for Heinze, who's their biggest lost this season if you ask me. O'Shea us useless, Ferdinand has his head up his £100k per week arse, Wes Brown has more injuries than the emergency room at Salford General on a Saturday night, and Silvestre has the concentrtion level of a two year old.

Sadly, I think United have two more seasons of mediocracy in front of them....as for the forwards, they need to put Smith just behind Rooney and RVN and play the exciting attacking football that made United famous, then get a holding midfielder instead of trying to make Smith something he isn't....it's just a waste of a great talent. Scholes can control the midfield with his experience, even if he isn't the player he used to be, so there's still time to get a natural holding player at a young age and show him the ropes before Scholsey moves on.

....and Barca, congrats on a great win over Madrid, that really showed who's the best team in Spain, and Europe in my opinion, but say what you will about Beckham, United have never been the same since they dumped him. He is sorely missed by RVN. Ronaldo can do all the fancy footwork, and probably has a career with Riverdance after his footballing days are over, but it means nothing if you do all that clever stuff then cross it to the opposite corner flag or perform a dive that would make Greg Luganus proud as soon as you get close to the box.

BTW Update on the biggest match in Europe this weekend.....CORK CITY, PRIDE OF IRELAND!!!! Cork 2 -0 Derry Both set of fans were singing together, "Oh, there ain't no dubs in Europe" which I found very funny.

Mankie, let's see how it goes today with Villarreal. The spaniards have some important players injured, but still are dangerous. This might be the most important game of the season for United.

As for Beckham and United, not sure what to say, I am not sure it can be argued that Beckham leaving for Madrid was the reason for Manchester's fall, but you know more than I do about England's football. I am still unimpressed with his football in Spain.
Title: Re: another footie thread....
Post by: Frank Gallagher on November 22, 2005, 10:16:00 am
I think United will squeak into the knock out stage....or maybe that's me being over-optimistic about my beloved team. With Keane gone, I just feel the players will want to prove that they can be a great team without him, that and the fact there is now a lot of pressure off the team could actually be a positive now Keane is out of the picture. Having said that, there's only two football players in my lifetime that I would call 'hero's' (hero's in the sporting sense only of course) and that's George Best and Roy Keane, so I don't want you to think I'm stabbing him in the back, it's just that he has such high standards for himself, that it's difficult, if not impossible for any other player to meet those standards.

As for Beckham, I may be way off here because I don't get to watch much Spanish football....maybe Real are playing Becks out of his natural position, his talents are as a goal-maker, not a goal-scorer, he basically spoon-fed RVN and made him look twice the player he is. That is were United desperately miss him. Have you noticed how he plays much better for England than he seems to do for Madrid? Maybe it's just the Spanish game he doesn't fit in with??? Had Ronhaldino gone to United instead of Barca I don't think he would've been as good playing the English game...In England they just don't get the space he seems to have to do his magic.

*footnote for the doodles* Add Rod Langway to my list of sporting hero's too, but we were just discussing footie here!   ;)

It's going to be tough against Benfica in the last game. I really hope Villarreal makes it first in the group, small team in Spain's second division a few years ago.

By the way, I read today that Capello might like to coach Manchester United? That would be a good move. Interesting to see Capello vs. Mourinho.

Well......for the first 15 minutes or so I was thinking this is going to be a 3-0/4-0 walloping, then it faded into something to put you to sleep. I hope the Glazers saw what they have reduced United to.

On the bright side, O'Shea completed two passes in the same game, so that's progress.

Every player on the pitch yesterday was there long before the Glazers took over the team.  This is what Fergie wanted with his moves of the last 2-3 years, very similar to what he did in bringing up Giggs, Becks, the Neville boys and Nicky Butt in the mid 90's.  And you know that.

The Glazers also had nothing to do with Keane leaving.  As heard on MUTV, they were upset that they weren't notified/consulted before the team and Keane split ways.

This young team simply isn't prepared for the rigors of Champions League play.  There was no leadership in the midfield, and there won't be until January at the earliest.

Mankie - while I'm not that throlled about the Glazers owning Man U I'm with Smackie on this one - I don't think their on field decline has anything to do with 6 months of Glazer family ownership - this steady decline has been going on for 3 years now....I also think Keanes departure was long overdue - he's a spent force physically - I also think its time for a change in manager - Martin O'Neill would be my choice  (assuming he's interested in coaching what with his wifes illness and all that)

Smackie, It starts from the top and trickles down. The morale has been down the tubes since that twat took over. Not saying he's 100% to blame, but he's a large part of the problem.

Mankie - while I'm not that throlled about the Glazers owning Man U I'm with Smackie on this one - I don't think their on field decline has anything to do with 6 months of Glazer family ownership - this steady decline has been going on for 3 years now....I also think Keanes departure was long overdue - he's a spent force physically - I also think its time for a change in manager - Martin O'Neill would be my choice  (assuming he's interested in coaching what with his wifes illness and all that) [/b]
Sorry but I don't see what the big deal is with O'Neill...what has he achieved exactly? He's managed a team that's in a division that really only had one other team, two now with Hearts, and the team he managed would probably be mid-table in the Championship, behind Reading, Sheffield and the like over the course of a full season. Hitzfield would be a good one, and now rumour is Capello at Juve is interested, both have far more impressive cv's than O'Neill.

I'm sure smackie will remember I said Fergie needed to go two seasons ago, so that's no great revelation.

As for the Glazers, they summed up their interest in the team when they didn't bother to show up for the Chelski match, talk about a slap in the face....showing up last night was because they had been there for a 'crisis' meeting after the Keane affair. I was open minded about them at first, but it's simply a matter of money to them, at leat the Irish duo were honest about it.

I couldn't disagree more with you Mank. O'Neill is a great manager who transformed Leicester from a nothing club, getting them promoted to the Premiership, winning the League cup and having them challenge teams with infinitely more resources at the top of the premiership. Needless to say, since his departure Leicester have reverted to their traditional mediocrity.

Then at Celtic he took over a team in turmoil, and in danger of being rendered irrelevant by Rangers streak of 8 in a row, immediately reversed the scales with essentially the same players, won a couple of championhips, and got em to the UEFA cup final (not sure when Reading and Sheffield last played in Europe let alone got to the finals).

He's got a great football brain, and is a good motivator. If he's so 'overrated' why is his name mentioned in connection with evrey single managerial vacancy that comes up?

What happened with Celtic and the title last year?

Your point with Leicester is well taken....but what really 'big' team has he managed, he'd drown at Real Madrid, Barcelona Juventus, AC Milan and even a fallling United....and don't say Celtic because if it weren't for religion they'd be another East Fife. Strachan is doing a job with Celtic and he's hardly a Matt Busby or Brian Clough now is he?

I'm not saying O'Neill is an idiot, I just think he's overrated that's all.

its true that they blew the title last year but honestly I think thats because O'Neill and by extension the team were not focused.....O'Neills wife has cancer and the team knew he would be leaving

so what really 'big' teams did Ferguson manage before Man U?   :p

NONE! But now he has, and so is proven to be up to the task. O'Neill has not and so not proven...that's my whole point.

so according to this 'logic' Ferguson should never have been hired for the Man U job in the first place??

That one paid off, but let's quit while we're ahead! (Which is a statement also very pertinent for Fergie at the moment)
