Title: favorite electric guitar?
Post by: bearman🐻 on August 31, 2004, 12:03:00 pm
I'm looking to buy an electric guitar (nothing too expensive) and was curious if any of you have any thoughts on one that you are particularly enamored with. Also, any advice for a novice like me would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

I've have a G&L Invader for many years.  Despite its name ("sounds like a dildo," remarked an ex girlfriend) it's a great guitar with a nice feel and it only cost $250.  It has both humbuckers and single-coil pickups so you can get a wide variety of sounds out of it.  G&L is the company founded by Leo Fender after he sold Fender to CBS, which has no practical significance except that if you're buying a Fender, you're buying a brand name with no link to the original company.

ps, avoid cheapie models, you'll grow to hate them.

are you hoping to join Echo and the Bunnymen?

I don't play guitar but have been in a few bands and know lots of folks who play.  A few guys I know say that for the $$, the mexican-made Telecasters are the best thing going.  They swear by 'em.

I've got a Standard Fender Strat from Musician's Friend for a cool $200 bucks. Totally worth it.

I've had a Mexican made Strat for about 15 years and I have nothing bad to say about it.  It's been a wonderful guitar.  My neighbors on the other hand......

I've got the Tele. I Love it. But I often wish I had the Strat also.

The Telecaster has such a distinct sound. Think Radiohead - Pete Yorn - etc.
Sometimes I just prefer the sound of the Strat though. Plus you get the wah-wah bar on the Strat.   :D

They also have a very different body composition. Tele is thicker and more boxy. Strat is rounded, seems thinner, yet denser.

Best bet is to go to a store and play a few. Even if you don't know anything about guitars. You'll like the way one sounds and feels best.

I agree that you should not cheap out. If you go cheap - you'll regret it almost immediately.

I may be totally wrong here, but I believe the guys steered me away from the Mexican made Fenders when I purchased. Said they were very inferior - albeit much less expensive.

I paid about $750 for mine:   American Musical Supply (http://www.americanmusical.com/images--i-FEN-118402-706--t-b--brand-94.html)

I don't play, but I just have to add that Chris Whitley plays some bitchin' guitars.

That's too funny. When I went to buy mine years ago - I asked about this National Steel. Mostly because Chris Whitley played it.

When they found out I was a beginner - they laughed at me.

It must be more difficult   ;)

I bought an Epiphone Sheraton II at Atomic last year and I absolutely love it.  It has a great tone.  I spent a few hours at Atomic one day trying out every guitar they had.  This one definitely stood out from the crowd.  Plus it wasn't even that expensive.

Yeah I'd say do like S-F did...go to a good shop and play a bunch of different guitars.  Leave with the one that speaks to you (and that you can afford).

Try Action music in Arlington.  The guy there seems really nice.

when i started i got an el cheapo chinese strat knock off from ebay.  with a little practice amp and some miscellaneous things, it was like $150.

 and it isn't half bad!

i've since bought a few other toys but really, it's a lot of bang for the buck.

personally, i would've been more intimidated/reluctant to learn/practice if i'd started out on something fancy schmancy.

Since some of you guys seem to have been in bands...

Our drummer's wife is about to have a baby and we need to get a new practice space...anyone know of practice spaces here in DC/NOVA?

Naw, I can't compete with Will Sergeant. Funny, I was leaning towards a Fender Strat. I just always love the sounds that come out of them from some of my favorite guitarists (Bob Mould in particular, esp. on Sugar's stuff). You guys have been really helpful!

That's another one I was looking at...all some great suggestions here. Anyone own a Les Paul? Just curious.

just an observation...

learning about the world of guitar equipment is much more complex and challenging than learning how to play the instrument itself.

kind of like, easy to learn how to drive, more difficult to learn how to put a car together.

once you get your hands around an instrument and play with it for a while, you'll also be in a better position to figure out what you like and what you need.  you know bryan adams got his first real six string at a five and dime, now look!

If you're looking to get a Gibson Les Paul Standard, be willing to part with a good amount of money.  I believe there's a Gibson Les Paul Studio that's a bit cheaper.  Or you could scrap Gibson and get an Epiphone Les Paul.

if you're a novice guitar player I wouldn't see the point of spending all that money on something fancy like a Les Paul.

You should check out a book called "Rockschool" before you buy anything... all the basics on guitars, plus everything else.

If you buy anything Fender you can be certain of getting decent resale value.

The thing I didn't like about playing electric guitar was that it seemed like I was never done buying gear. Classical guitar is another story-  once you've bought the thing you're done buying

How about acoustics for beginners?  I'd like to get something decent, but I don't want to spend a fortune on something I might not even use a year from now.

I have no idea... my accoustic, a wonderful Gibson steel-string, I got because a cousin lent it to me before going off to school and never asked for it back  :)

I got a Fender Mexicaster in the Summer of 1994.  It is a great guitar for a beginner, but if you want something that is going to last and have a good sound for years, I wouldn't buy another one.  Then again, I did beat the shit out of the thing.  I got it for under $300 and I had the infamous Crate GX-15 amp that everyone and there mother has owned at some point.  However, when playing live with a band in college, I learned to hate the thing because at a high volume, I couldn't get a decent sound out of the thing. But if you are just wanting to learn how to play, a fender mexican strat might be a good way to go.  just be nice to it.

A little over a year ago with too much graduation money in my pocket, I decided I was going to buy a Gibson.  I went to Guitar Center in Rockville and decided to go for a top of the line epiphone.  I was uneasy about it at the time, but I think I made a good decision.  Instead of buying the cheap bottom line Gibson, I got the highest end Epiphone Les Paul they make (Les Paul Standard Plus) for around $600.  It sounds great to me and I don't think I'll play another fender (except maybe a jazzmaster) as long as I live.  I think my next purchase, in many years when i'm rich, will be an old school Hagstrom or an Airline.

That's most likely a Mexican or Japanese Fender Strat...US models start around $500.

I like my Ibanezs that I've got and might be picking up yet another one.  I LOVE my Charvel Model 6 but those aren't made anymore. So, I will not play it out live as I just love it too much for something bad to happen to it.
