so Death Cab's version of "This Charming Man" blows, but The Stars do a really good job on the same song ... and i like the Get Up Kids doing "Close to Me" but can't stand the 311 version of "Love Song"
any suggestions for more good Smiths/Cure covers?
-
dinosaur jr., hands down, baby.
-
Stars' "This Charming Man" is cute. Supegrass does a decent rendition of "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others." Jeff Buckley does a helluva job with "The Boy With a Thorn in His Side" on a live album. I don't pay much attention to anything Cure-related.
-
Ivy does a pretty good cover of "Lets Go to Bed"..you can find it on emusic.com.
-
I had a version of Placebo doing Bigmouth Strikes Again...I think Ben Gibbard is covering a Cure song..heard it in a store the other day but can't recall which song it was..

Ben Folds does a cover of "In Between Days"... opened the show with it the other night, in fact.

Jonathan Arthur - There Is A Light...

So this is why you're so gay, the smiths and the cure. Damn, they suck.

I hate to repeat myself, but gay is the new black. Again.
-
I always liked Billy Bragg's version of Jeanne on his Peel Sessions CD. Honestly never cared for the Smiths but Billy does this song justice.

This might be a bit off topic but I totally had some hot anal with the drummer for System of a Down last night.

hitmeintheface sounds like an invitation for oral sex

I have a Billy Bragg bootleg where he mentions that he was asked to do a song for a safe-sex promotion. He sings a couple of verses from Girlfriend in a Coma, but changes the lyrics to Boyfriend in a Condom.

the Business...Panic

i love billy bragg's version of "jeanne."
here are some other good ones:
kirsty maccoll - "you just haven't earned it yet, baby"
sandie shaw - "hand in glove"
sandie shaw was a great '60s british singer, sort of like the british dusty springfield. she made three solid albums, all in the '60s, before reappearing in the '80s. morrissey was a big fan of hers and i think spurred her on to cover "hand of glove." she made a record for rough trade in 1988, and i think the jesus and mary chain were on a couple of tracks, but i could be wrong.
i also have an EP by a ukrainian band called (surprisingly) the ukrainians, which consists of four smiths songs done in russian. the four songs are "the queen is dead," "bigmouth strikes again," "what difference does it make?" and "meat is murder." it's actually pretty fucking awesome.
-
i saw sensefield open for someone at the 9:30 about 5 years ago and they did a kick-ass version of "what difference does it make"...i don't think it's on any of their albums tho. should be. anybody remember who the headliner was for that show? i was thinking built to spill but it's a blur.
-
trash can sinatras - "I know its over"
-
Braid does a "there is a light..." that is alright, but Dino Jr's "just like heaven" is the best that has been mentioned
-
hitmeintheface needs exactly that. And if you want your mind closed, then just shoot yourself in the head or drop out of society. The rest of us will throw a party...you won't be missed.

Mojo Nixon does a rocking cover of 'Girlfriend in a Coma'

-
Goldfinger of course did their version of "Just Like Heaven" (off of Darin's Coconut Ass) :D

Several years ago Doves were on an Australian music tv show called Recovered and performed "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" which wasn't too bad.
