The other person said that the Yankees lost to the Indians, they didnt say anything about the score. Thats what I responded to. I believe I already responded to your 22-0 remark. :)

Oh yeah, I didnt get drubbed. The Yankees did. I was sitting home watching tv at the time.
Also, you might wanna get something for that cough, it sounds pretty nasty.

Like A-Rod said, It only counts as one loss.

I was actaully rooting for Vizquel to go 7-7, he missed it on his last at bat though. He's had a fine career and I had him on my fantasy team this year. So I had to cheer for the little fella.

I wonder how many wasted $$ per run that breaks down to for Steinbrenner.
If the Wankees had any class they would donate their salaries for that game to charity.

To all of those proud members of the Red Sox Nation...we do not need to gloat...our team needs to keep playing the way that they have during August. The Yankmees are in trouble...god, what are all the fly-by-night fans going to do??? Maybe there will be a run on Boston hats this fall...and we can become famous when jackasses like Fred Durst wear our caps as fashion accessories...oh to dream!

As opposed to how many humiliating playoff defeats over the years? It amazes me how many Red Sox fans are obsessed with the Yankees. If the Sox were blown out last night, I doubt that any Yankee fan member of the forum would have bothered to create a topic.
I was at Fenway last weekend and the number of fans wearing Yankees Suck t-shirts was insane, not to mention the number of young kids wearing them. I don't think Yankee fans have the same obsession with the Red Sox, but this is probably old news.
-
nice to see the Cardinals 6 games better than the Yanks with half the payroll
i am actually rooting for a Cards-Yankees Series though
and a Cubs collapse
-
blah blah. . .it doesn't matter, as the a's and angels are both going to playoffs this year.
pollard, i bet you want a cubs collapse, since you know they can beat the cards. ;)

I do fear them more than any other team, I just think the two teams are evenly match, and cubs cardinals games are always close, but I find this particular Cubs team to be pathetic and underserving of making the playoffs, why do they keep acting like they are the best team in baseball when they can barely keep the Astros from the wild card

well the Padres may be in trouble, they play the Cardinals 5 more times in the next couple of weeks

well, somehow the padres survive, just like their manager. but yeah, the padres have the toughest schedule of the wild card teams. . .the cubs have the easiest, by far. . .4 left with the expos, 6 with the marlins, 6 with the pirates, 3 with the mets, 3 with the braves and 8 with the reds. course, they finish with 3 at home against the braves.

Thank You, That is the most accuarate statement I've read in this forum in a long time. And before Sonick disagrees, remember I have alot of friends who are Red Sox fans up in New England who agree with this statement. If the Red Sox win the world series, their first reaction would be, "we won and the Yankees didnt". IF the Yankees win the world series, not one mention of the Red Sox would be in their post game speech (maybe Wade Boggs said something). Just like everytime the Red Sox sign a new star, the first thing they say during the press conference is "this is the year we beat the Yankees". Well Carl Everett was wrong, Manny Ramirez was wrong, Pedro Martinez was wrong and I'm sure theres a couple of others. Maybe Curt Schilling will be right. Eventually someones gotta be right, If you say it a hundred different times its bound to happen at least once.

Well they are gonna have a hard time attracting hitters if they dont change the dimensions of that ball park.

let me make 3 points.
1. you disgust me, goddamn New Englander routing for the Yanks.
2. we are always looking at the Yankees cause they are always ahead of us in the division. dont the Leafs always look at the Bruins like that? :)
3. i dont really care if the Yankees win the world series if we dont. as long as they dont beat us in the playoffs to get there!
3a. I dont even want the world series if we dont beat the Yankees in the playoffs to do so. (i dont want lame NY excuses!)

My point exactly. What lame NY excuses? Trust me, no one in NY will be that angry when the Sox (eventually) win the world series. And if the Sox beat the Yankees in the playoffs there will not be much of an uproar after about two weeks. Not like the months long group therapy sessions in Boston last year.
Also, it's not as if beating the Yankees (or not) en route to the World Series changes anything about either franchise's history, or even the "rivalry" that they share. Look at the head to head numbers - there's not much of a rivalry, only in the minds of some Sox fans... the ones who chant "Yankees Suck" at Patriot games, and let their 8 year olds wear Yankees suck A-Rod t-shirts...

just the excuse that we still havent beaten the Yankees.
if the Red Sox beat the A's and the Twins and then the Cardinals to win the World Series, you dont think any Yankees fans would say "well, you're just lucky you didnt have to play us"
I know several who would.
thats the only excuse i was referring to.

Then I'm the .01%...I still bring up 1997 Divisional Playoffs. (Go ahead, everyone delve it out)

I was at Yankee Stadium in 1978 and saw scores of fans with Red Sox suck t-shirts.
I'm also not a Red Sox fan, but it does my heart good to see the Yankees get their asses whipped.
-
While I enjoyed the Yankees getting slaughtered yesterday as much as the next guy, I do find it quite funny how much the media (and Red Sox fans) have gotten all over this.
Hey Sox fans, it's not like YOU GUYS beat them 22-0. It's quite sad when you have to spend this much time because ANOTHER team beat them 22-0. Do the Sox have the same success against the Yanks? I think not. Just win by one run in game 7 and then talk all you want....
But, now that the media is focused on the AL East race, nobody is going to watch the two teams from the AL West make the playoffs. I think this is a good thing.
-
i just thought it was funny to mention to rob and that other yankee guy/girl on here.
the way i see it,if the Sox keep playing well, they'll get in , and worry about the playoffs when they get there.
-
Do you really think both Texas and Oakland will make it?

My buddy the last time I was up in Boston said that he was at a bar for game seven. He's a huge Red Sox fan but he was laughing at all the people at the bar who were crying when Boone hit the home run. He said he was embarrassed to be a Red Sox fan at that time by their reaction, still chanting "Jeter Blows" and "Yankees Suck".

Then talk about being the hottest team since the trade. Talk about cutting the lead to 3.5 from 10.5 since the trade. Start focusing on your accomplishments and less on the downfalls of the Yankees - treat them just like any other ball club and maybe the team will start to believe it can win, rather than belive it can beat the Yankees. See the difference?
I had the pleasure of watching the NESN broadcast of the Angels/Sox game yesterday and while the Sox were giving it to Anaheim, the announcers were updating the Yankees score run by run and talking the whole time about how the Yankee pitching isn't any good, nevermind the fact that Manny hit two jacks and Schilling was throwing himself back in the Cy Young race. The Red Sox infatuation with Yankees is their biggest downfall.

ummm, no, i mean the angels. i'd much rather you guys face the yankees and we face the twins than the other way around. a's match up better against santana than the angels, and you guys match up better against the yankees. an any event, it's gonna be a's/angels in the alcs.

Perfectly put.
The problem is that once the glory of finally winning a world series fades, Sox fans might actually have to deal with their own history rather than hating the Yankees. That's when Sox fans will truly be depressed.

You'd see them around at many more ballparks than just Fenway, but they're not allowed (they're deemed instigatory at Camden).

The Indians are far from push-overs, and have been playing good ball of late. Check the standings. Good young talent in the line-up and on the mound.
Agreed. I think that the whole (insert team here) sucks thing is pretty classless, but the Sox take it to another level. Among the gems I saw were:
Yankees Suck. Jeter Swallows.
and
Yankees Suck A-Rod.
If grown-ups are going to wear this stuff I could care less, but these were on kids under the age of ten, whose parents should know better...

well, when i am at a Orioles game, no matter WHO is playing, all it takes it a couple shouts of "yankees suck, yankees suck" and the whole section I'm in is more than happy to pitch in with the fun.
This also works at Blue Jays home games too.
even when the Yankees arent even there!

As a former O's season ticket holder, I bet that most folks chanting just want a break from watching a team that has been comatose since 1997.
Starting Yankees, or any other team sucks chants is lame. Surely you could come up with something more creative...

My nephew insists on wearing this USC Trojans T-shirt to every game because it has the #5 on it for his favortie player, Reggie Bush.
Of course, the shirt was from the Oregon State game last year and it says FCUK THE BEAVERS on the front and WE'VE GOT BUSH on the back with his number. Conservative USC parents hassle my brother-in-law all the time "How can you let your child wear that?" to which he replies "He can't read so unless you tell him what it says, he doesn't know." Cracks me up.

yankees suck is traditional, and how intricate of a chant do we need.
should we do the
"I dont like the Yankees cause i am sick and tired of them getting all of the good players because they have more money than other teams and we havent beat them in a meaningful game in a very long time" chant?
that would surely be a lot more lame.

The chant you suggested would certainly be less classless than Yankees Suck. And it's not as if the Red Sox are some small market team who relies on a strong farm system to develop and rear talent. They spend more money than 99% of teams, just not as well. If they hadn't absorbed so many huge and stupid contracts over the years (Mike Lansing, Jose Offerman, Dante Bichette come immediately to mind), maybe you would be chanting a different tune.
-
and very soon, we will be.

the fiancee's sister has a kerry wood t-shirt along those lines as well. . the front says "we got wood" and back has a big k. until recently, she didn't get the double entendre, and she's 16. the innocence of youth.

Oh for Christ' sake. I'm so fucking tired of hearing the shit about money. If Boston got A-Rod, then the damn conversation would be different. Don't forget, Boston spent a hell of a lot more money this past offseason than NY. Let alone the fact that if it wasn't for the Yankees and luxury taxes/revenue sharing, how in the hell would San Diego, Minnesota, Oakland, Milwaukee (and the host of other small markets) even field a damn team. The Yankees have money because ownership puts money in the team, because the GM knows how to handle money, and they have excellent handlers in other depts. Angelos puts more money into the Greek Olympic Baseball Team than he does the Orioles around here.

From what Peter Gammons said at the beginning of the season, the small market teams that get all that money from the Yankees just pocket the money instead of using it towards the team. Thats why we see the big difference in spending. Steinbrennar spends the money on his team. Minnesota, Cincinnati and Kansas Citys payroll would be much higher if they just used the money they get. It's funny how the Red Sox were right with the Yankess before the Yankees signed A-Rod, then John Henry for the first time started whining about the spending.......hypocrite.

You know whats funny? The Yankees scored five runs last night and still got the same amount of wins as the Indians did when they scored twenty two runs. I guess A-Rod was right when he said it's ONLY one loss.......What a concept.

[/QB]
just for the record. i never wanted A-Rod.
i hate A-Rod. i didnt like him in Texas. Besides, we already have an overpaid player on the team (Ramirez).

wait. where do you get that number? Boston spent more money than NY? I'd like to see that figure, cause all we got was Schilling and Foulke and i didnt think they were more than A-Rod, Sheffield, Lofton and whoever else plays on the team now.
and wasnt the luxury tax just started like 2 years ago? hardly enough time to be funding half of the league.

Ok, can we just take Lofton off the list, he's about the same as signing Pokey Reese.

Must be the flip, they must have finally relented and are now allowing the t-shirts in. It was last August (2003), and they absolutely WOULD not let my friend into the ballpark with that shirt. He had a manager come over and the whole bit. He had to turn it inside out. [He then went on to 'report' several offensive comments yelled out in our section. If you're doing to disallow profanity or inciteful sayings, DO it.]
My friend wrote a letter to the team and yards management about it all. Maybe there were finally too many t-shrits showing up to stop from entering the park...

I'm neither a sox fan or yankees fan, but I do enjoy following the whole drama that surrounds these two teams. What I always wonder is, what happens to the Red Sox fans if they do win a world series? I always imagine some sort or existential crisis. I mean, they'll have to adopt a whole new identity once they become winners. Especially since they seem to derive some sort of masochistic pleasure from being "cursed" and victims of the cosmos etc.

Why not
I HATE THE YANKEES
They hardly suck, but I can't speak for Jeter or A-Rod... they do both look like extras from Will and Grace though so who knows?

If you look at what NY lost in the offseason with Clemens, Pettite, Boone, and others, they didn't have to spend anymore than what was paid before to get replacements. Most came via trade, or cheap free agent pickup (Lofton, Clark, etc.) With what Texas put up in the way of money, the reconfiguring of A-Rod's contract, and with what Soriano was going to cost, the trade was basically a wash. The last I heard, the Yankees didn't really have to put up much money at all.

I don't believe this for a second. a sox fan wouldn't want to finally win the series if they couldn't beat the yankees in the playoffs?!? come on! if sox fans are actually putting conditions on how they want to win the series, then they don't deserve it. believe me, the sox fans would take a series victory any way they could.
and the yankees can be taken this year, but sox fans should know better than to get giddy on 9/1. the obsession with the yankees puts more pressure on them.
and Bags is right, they made our friend turn around his Yankees Suck shirt at Camden Yards last year. as a Yankees fan, i was actually annoyed they made him do so. it's more fun when everyone's wearing them!

This obsession with the Yankees is unhealthy. What's going to happen when the Sox finally win a world series and realize that they STILL aren't in the same league as a franchise? Where is a Red Sox dynasty? Has there ever been one? The inferiority complex just runs so deep...

yeah but a 90mph fastball in the ribs still hurts, and one to the head can do a lot of damage, probably does not hurt as much as a cricket ball though
I don't think Barry Bonds should be allowed to wear so much armor on his arms to protect him from getting hit

No, what makes Pedro an ass is he beans people, then when theres a brawl he'll stay in the dugout so no one will touch him. Unless of course he see's an 80 year old man coming at him at 1 mile an hour, then he'll get out of the dugout to confront him. I'm sure a Clemens comment will come up, but during a brawl, he'll be the first one out to help protect his teamate.
I don't think Pedro comes out cause If I remember right he got clocked once when someone charged the mound. That was a nice shot. :D

I agree there's an element of danger in the game when someone is throwing a hard ball of leather at you at 90mph+.
But if you're going to run out to start a fight...start a friggin fight or don't run out at all! Don't give me this huggie-dancie crap and then clear the benches so we all have a nice group huggie-dancie session.
And what kind of pussy kicks dust on someone elses shoes?

The basic fact here is
The NY Yankees are supposed to be good, they are supposed to win, and if you only make it to the ALCS, then ho-hum another so-so year.
When the Sox make it to the ALCS, its pandemonium and for a couple weeks in October, Boston goes nuts, dreaming of a better tomorrow!
face it, if you win the series this year, BFD, but if Boston wins its going to be a new New England holiday!

Of course I can play that card, Its not Clemens fault he's not 160 lbs, and most of that weight is coming from Pedro's 1965 affro. I'm willing to bet he didnt learn to be a hard ass in Boston, my guess is Texas and Nolan Ryan.

I don't think that he should be able to wear that shit. Would that be allowed in any other sport? Don't think so. It makes you wonder if he has to have that shit to hit the long ball.
No matter what MLB has to get clear about uniform rules. Juan Pierre and CC Sabathia should not be able to wear their hats crooked to the side. This isn't a fucking Lil' Jon video. This is an organized league. And the baggy uniforms have to go.

Well the Cardinals have a policy not to intentionally walk him unless it is the right game situation for it, it burns them occasionally, but I think it is the right thing to do, all that gear on his arms means he can lean over the plate all he wants, i have the same problem with Biggio though

The Yankees haven't lost since. Must have been a wakeup call. Maybe if they had only lost 5-4, they'd still be losing.
-
This is really weird, The Yankees in the last two games have scored 14 runs. That means in the one win Cleveland scored 22 runs and got ONE win out of it. The Yankees score a combined 14 runs in two games and got TWO wins. This really confuses me (sarcasm)
Once again, A-Rod was right when he said it was ONLY one loss.

Here's a good reason to hate the Yankees. This is the most chicken shit move I've seen from this franchise. It worse then all the times they "couldn't get the field cleaned up after the rains" when they were mysteriously losing before 5 innings, but always could when they had the lead.
YANKEES ASK FOR A FORFEIT
Tuesday, September 7, 2004
If Yankees were in Devil Rays' shoes ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services
NEW YORK -- The Yankees' push Monday for a forfeit victory over the Devil Rays has landed them squarely in the eye of Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella.
Because of travel problems due to Hurricane Frances, the Devil Rays arrived three hours late for the rescheduled 3 p.m. ET opener of a doubleheader Monday at Yankee Stadium. Tampa Bay lost the game that was played 7-4. Afterward, Piniella was angry that the Yankees asked the commissioner's office to declare the other game a forfeit victory for them.
Commissioner Bud Selig has no intention of ordering a forfeit.
"If it'd been reversed, and that hurricane would have been here in the New York area as opposed to the Tampa area, the Yankees should have stayed at home and forgotten about the ballgame in Tampa. Period," Piniella told reporters.
"Let me tell you this: I think when you look at baseball, it's important," Piniella continued. "Your family is doubly important or triply important and when a hurricane is beating down on the Florida coast, 160, 70, 80 miles from your hometown, I think you take care of your family first and you worry about the ballgame second.
"I know the Yankees are in a pennant race, but I also know that our kids are young and have a lot of young kids at home. There was flooding, there are a lot of things that occurred over a two-day period in Florida, and I think everybody was more comfortable being with their family than being in New York sitting in a hotel waiting to play a baseball game."
Devil Rays designated hitter Aubrey Huff didn't make the trip; his house was so flooded, according to one report, that he couldn't get out of it despite offers from police to escort him to the airport so he could join his teammates.
General manager Chuck LaMar said the team never intended to leave for New York until Sunday night or Monday. The team endured travel delays Monday of up to 10 hours before landing in New York.
"We decided, and we made the right decision, we'll stick by that decision, to stay with our families," he said. "We wanted to stay in the Tampa Bay area, wait out the storm with our families."
The Yankees reported to Yankee Stadium at noon for the doubleheader. Tampa Bay players arrived for the 7:05 p.m. start at 6:05, suited up, and lost their eighth straight.
Before the game, Yankees president Randy Levine and general manager Brian Cashman held a news conference on the field, explaining why they wanted a forfeit. Baseball rules say a forfeit may be called if a team isn't ready within five minutes of umpires calling "play" unless the delay is "unavoidable."
"The rule states that if your team is here and ready to play, and the other team isn't here and not ready to play, there should be a forfeit, and we believe there should be a forfeit," Levine said.
The teams also are scheduled to play night games Wednesday and Thursday. Levine said that if the forfeit request was denied, it should be rescheduled to be played on Oct. 4, the day after the regular season, if it's needed to decide a postseason race. He also said that the Yankees may refuse to reschedule the game for this week, even if ordered to.
"Given the stage of the season we are in, and the exciting pennant races, it is critical that we do everything to decide the championship on the field," Selig said in a statement.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Yeah, but even when you count them out, they turn around and do something smart. It is when you think they are doing too well, that they fuck it up. So I can't count them out yet.
I have mixed feelings on the Devil Rays' situation. I am human, and feel it is harsh considering the circumstances. But the flip side that I'm hearing off of Around the Horn, and PTI today on ESPN, is that the D-Rays owner didn't want to front a couple of extra bucks for an earlier charter flight Monday morning. Then MLB told the D-Rays to fly out Sat. (and the team told MLB they were going to do that) but never did, although they were told they could take their families with them. This is according to ESPN today on TV. But there is the other pissing and moaning side of it that is awfully inmature. Toss up.

For you idiots that thought it was just the Yankees fault:
Selig and Co. blew it
By Jayson Stark
ESPN.com
It's always fashionable to blame the Yankees for just about anything and just about everything these days. Traffic. Inflation. Bad haircuts. Whatever.
So why not the weather?
Why not a hurricane?
Why not a headline that looked something like this:
HURRICANE FRANCES RAVAGES FLORIDA. STEINBRENNER BLAMED.
OK, it never quite came to that this week. But it did come to this:
DEVIL RAYS DELAYED BY HURRICANE. YANKEES DEMAND FORFEIT.
If you weren't paying attention, that looked like the clear seven-word summation of what happened Monday at Yankee Stadium, when the Tampa Bay Devil Rays failed to show up on time for a doubleheader without a valid note from their mothers.
But of course, it's more complicated than that. And as best we can tell, after hearing all sides in this fiasco, it isn't the Yankees who deserve to take the heat on this. Or the Devil Rays.
It's the poobahs at Major League Baseball, who must have been the only people on the planet not watching the Weather Channel over the weekend.
Does anybody out there really believe the Yankees are so desperate to hold onto their lead over the rampaging Red Sox that they tried to squeeze a forfeit out of a team caught in a hurricane?
Come on, friends. George Steinbrenner may believe that the goal in life is to go 162-0 and sweep the World Series by a score of 57-1. But he isn't that inhumane.
All the Yankees were really doing, in requesting that forfeit ruling Monday, was asking the commissioner's office, in that diplomatic way of theirs: Why the heck were we forced to wait around all day for a team that had no more chance of arriving in New York by 3 p.m. than it did of swimming from Tampa Bay to the Bronx?
Why were they there? Not because they wanted to be. They were there because MLB's COO, Bob DuPuy, assured them repeatedly all weekend that the Devil Rays would show up in plenty of time to play.
As early as Friday, Yankees president Randy Levine told ESPN.com, the Yankees called the commissioner's office and said: "There's a hurricane coming. What do you want us to do (about Monday's doubleheader)?"
"If they had just told us Friday, 'The Devil Rays are not coming,' all of this would have been avoided," Levine said.
But that isn't what the Yankees were told. They were told by DuPuy on Friday they should prepare to play, Levine said. They were told the same thing on Saturday. They were told again on Sunday. They were reassured yet again Sunday night, despite forecasts that showed the storm had slowed in the Tampa Bay area.
So all the Yankees did was what they were told. They prepared to play. They showed up to play.
And when game time rolled around (a couple of different game times, in fact) and there was nobody to play, they got slightly annoyed. Can't blame them.
There should have been a simple announcement Sunday, if not earlier: "The health and safety of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and their families is more important to us than any Labor Day doubleheader. Therefore, we're postponing both games." How complicated is that, huh?
But what were they doing there? Why were they told to play? Why did MLB even think it was possible to play? That still isn't clear.
DuPuy didn't return two calls for comment. But MLB spokesman Rich Levin says baseball was assured by the Devil Rays "that they would be there on time." Which is interesting, since the Rays themselves say they never had any intention of leaving until the storm had passed and they knew their homes and families were safe.
"We'd do it again tomorrow," said Rick Vaughn, the Devil Rays' vice president of public relations. "There's no way we wanted to come up during that storm."
Even the Yankees admit that Devil Rays GM Chuck LaMar talked to Yankees GM Brian Cashman as early as Friday and told them just that. They even relayed that message to MLB.
But Levine says the Yankees were then told by the commissioner's office: "That's not true. We're telling them to get up there."
There have been intimations that it was Devil Rays owner Vince Naimoli who told DuPuy his team would show up Monday right on time, ostensibly because it planned to leave Sunday.
But Vaughn says that while there was some preliminary talk about trying to fly out Sunday night, the forecast continued to worsen. So "by Friday night, when we left the ballpark," Vaughn said, "our traveling secretary told me, 'We'll leave Monday morning, unless you hear (otherwise) from me.' "
The commissioner's office, however, would not confirm that Naimoli had sent DuPuy a different message -- or, in fact, that he had told them anything about anything.
"We're not going to talk about what conversations we had with the Devil Rays," Levin said. "We were led to believe the Devil Rays could make it there in time for the game. As far as who said what to whom, we're not going to get into it."
The other bizarre aspect of this story is the Yankees' suggestion that the Devil Rays took their time getting out of Tampa on Monday, when they could have flown out first thing in the morning.
"Let me tell you about our day," Vaughn replied. "We got to the park at 7:30 in the morning, because the bus was supposed to leave at 8. And we were ready to go. But the airport in Sarasota was closed.
"So then we tried to fly out of Fort Myers. But there were tornado warnings along I-75. And Chuck said, 'I'm not going to jeopardize these players' safety by trying to drive 2½ hours (to Fort Myers) in this weather.'
"Finally, around 11:30, we heard that the Tampa airport would be open around noon. ... But the bridge was flooded, and they only had one lane open, and it took us an hour just to get across the bridge. So there was no way we could leave Tampa until 3 o'clock.
"We left Tampa at 3 and played a game -- in New York -- at 7." Vaughn said. "I never heard of anybody doing that. But we did it. We walked in, put our uniforms on, went out, stretched and started the game."
The Yankees, on the other hand, say they were told at one point that the Devil Rays would leave Saturday, before the storm even hit -- then were told Monday that the Tampa airport was open all morning.
With all these different stories flying around, of course, who knows what any of us should believe. So Levine said the Yankees didn't demand they be handed this win by forfeit. All the Yankees asked MLB to do, he said, was "investigate."
"What we said to Major League Baseball was, 'Do an investigation,' " Levine said. "If you determine that Tampa Bay was supposed to leave and it didn't have a valid reason for not leaving and not showing up, then the rules say there should be a forfeit."
But MLB's "investigation" didn't exactly last as long as the Iran-Contragate hearings. Before Monday night's game was even over, Bud Selig had issued a statement saying MLB believed in determining the outcome of its games by playing them, not forfeiting them. And by Tuesday afternoon, MLB had rescheduled the postponed game as part of a Wednesday doubleheader.
The Yankees had asked for that game to be rescheduled for after the season and only played if necessary. But MLB rejected that argument, too.
"We try to play all our games," Levin said, speaking for Selig. "Things like hurricanes do happen. When they happen, you have to make an adjustment. And we made an adjustment."
That, however, isn't the Yankees' beef. They understand there was a hurricane. They understand that created issues for a lot of people. They understand why the Devil Rays didn't want to leave until the storm had headed elsewhere.
"We're not objecting to any of that," said the Yankees' president. "What we're objecting to is: That's not what (MLB) told us. ... If (the Rays) couldn't get there -- or baseball was telling them they didn't have to get there -- why didn't (MLB) just tell us that? If they'd come to us Friday, Saturday or Sunday and said, 'This is not going to happen,' why would we have opened the gates?"
Uh, good question. And one that could have been easily answered, too, had anyone from the commissioner's office just taken a good look at the Doppler, considered all the human issues involved and thought this through.
There should have been a simple announcement from Selig or DuPuy on Sunday, if not earlier: "The health and safety of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and their families is more important to us than any Labor Day doubleheader. Therefore, we're postponing both games and we're telling the Devil Rays to wait out this storm. We'll stay in constant communication with all sides. And when it's safe for them to leave for New York, we'll have a further announcement on rescheduling these games."
How complicated is that, huh? But instead, the Devil Rays probably will be fined and/or disciplined. Lucky them.
And all that forfeit hoopla has probably led most of the continent to think the Yankees' official hurricane policy was something to the effect of: "We deserve that forfeit. And oh by the way, we don't care if your power stays out till November."
Ridiculous.
But when in doubt, blame the Yankees. It's been a can't-go-wrong formula for 80 years. No reason to abandon it now.

I don't know how you can like the Yankees. Steinbrenner doesn't even allow facial hair, except for mustaches. How un-rock and roll is that?
At least the Red Sox look like dirtbags.

Because it's baseball, not Rock and Roll.
Some of the Sox look like dirtbags because they are. Mark Bellhorn, Alan Embree, Scott Williamson, and Trot Nixon are all white trash.

Jeff Nelson
Yankees brought him aboard not once, but twice.
Wonder what Baltimore neighborhood he's from?

Yes I watch baseball that much.
Jeter is from Kalamazoo, Michigan. And, with the exception of Bellhorn I have met them all on multiple occasions, so while I wouldn't say I know them, I would say that I can confirm that they are white trash.
Jeff Nelson, point taken. Fortunately he's gone now, though.

Jeter is biracial, so can't be white trash.
Though if he were from Jersey, that would be automatic qualification.

Actually the new slogan is from that movie Tombstone. "Tell them we're coming, and Hell's coming with us." or something like that.

Anyhow, my point was why even ask for a forfeit? Have some compassion. This entire nation shut down when NY was attacked on 9/11 and everyone gave NY as much time as they needed after the season resumed, why couldn't the Yankees give the Devil Rays 4 fucking hours?

going 8-1 on a road trip against the West's best three is pretty good eh?

Well, you technically you beat Texas and Anaheim in Boston. But sweeping Anaheim in Boston and then possibly sweeping Oakland in Oakland, yes, that is very impressive.

He's from Catonsville, MD. And unfortunately, his poor brother is a dead ringer for him too.
Ironically enough, Denny Neagle (Crofton, MD) has a brother that looks just like him as well.
Neither are twins, and I've witnessed occasions where both brothers have been asked for their autographs.

It may be un-rock and roll, but it is reminiscent of old school baseball. Something missing these days, that is refreshing to see from time to time. Like players wearing the high socks. I'm feeling a little nostalgiac after catching "61*" on HBO tonite.

Yeah. This was the cry-baby who agreed to go to Japan when his option or something wasn't picked up by the Marlins (I believe) and they sold his rights. Then days later when the Red Sox showed interest, he started pissing and whining about his family, and appealed to MLB to help. Didn't seem like much of a cowboy then?

The best take on lasts night fiasco in Oakland:
"Oakland -- where beer flows more freely than intelligent thought"
Put that on a billboard, I dare you. I'll even pitch in.
Having had the pleasure of attending nearly 25 games in Oaktown this year and last, I can honestly say that I'm not at all surprised about what happened last night (except that Frankie threw the chair, which is just moronic!). I've had to change seats at least 6 times to avoid confrontation, and only half of those were when I was watching Anaheim. The other three times I was just a passive attendee who had to leave because of other people fighting.
Sure, this happens at Raider games like Courtney Love gets high, but it didn't used to be like this at A's games in the past. Or did it?

when growing up, giants games were generally much worse than a's games, but then they moved into pacbell, and increased prices and costs to keep the less-desireable out. . .so, they must have moved to a's games.
however, with the raiders moving in, they've increased the number of beer and hard alcohol concessions, and the a's decided to open them up during the season. i will say that there is a still a great degree of contempt for the giants/49ers from oakland fans. oakland fans see themselves as the beer, jack drinkers, and see giants/49ers fans as sushi eating, chardonnary drinking wannabes. i recommend the hbo special about the 1970s a's and raiders for background.
nevertheless, philly phans are still worse.

I wore a Steeler jersey to a Ravens game and found out that at least 35% of the crowd were also wearing Steeler jerseys. So anytime a stupid Raven fan said anything, we had plenty of backup. And believe me, they said something even though they were trailing the game pretty easily from beginning to end.

oh, i disgree about barry sanders. . .jd drew wanted philly to pay him more than he was worth (grr, don't get me started on the dis-service boras is doing for his clients just outta college). . barry sanders didn't want his coach to be fired. how is that worse - jd was motivated by greed and barry by loyalty.

I guess I was more concerned about his teamates and fans. Him walking out after the draft and them left with no running back.

from what i remember, he told the lions very early on that if they fired, i think it was wayne fontes, then he wasn't gonna play. the lions, knowing that, went ahead and fired fontes, and sanders said, ok, i'm not playing again.

Big series this weekend tough guy. :D
I watched the Red Sox last night on ESPN against the mighty Devil Rays. Definetely can't say anything bad about their offense.

I guess I like to hope people have a reasonable grasp on reality and realize that violence isnt needed when a guy doesnt want to play for your sports team [/b]
Maybe my choice of words wasn't correct. I can understand why there may have been uneasiness in the crowd when Drew was up to bat, but violence is never an answer. It would be better to just scream profanities than that. But I don't necessarily like when that occurs at games either, because there are always kids around, and their parents didn't bring them to games to hear that shit. Let alone, the people screaming, are always the ones that call players profane names, and then get pissed when they don't sign a damn autograph.

I don't remember any of that. I just remember Sanders getting tired of playing for the Lions because they hardly made the playoffs and what not. Just goes to show you, one player never makes a successful team.

Well I saw on tv that one of the hecklars was actually the wife that got hit by the chair's husband. If the dumbass would just kept his mouth shut, his wife would be ok. So the bottom line is, his wife suffered from his stupid remarks, if he just watched the game and cheered for his A's, none of this woulda happened. And after seeing the highlights, he's damn lucky Doug Brocail was being held back, that boy was pissed and ready to rip someones head off.
I know most people won't agree with those remarks but a little common sense by the fans woulda prevented this. Not that chair throwing is the answer but It might have been better than what Brocail woulda done to the husband.

I'm not most people...I agree with you. Most people need to learn to shut their mouths, period. I love this shit. The fans are like I didn't say anything except my team was better than his, and he snapped. Bullshit! Let alone, the players also need to chill and not let stuff bother them so much. In this case, the player should have gone to security and had the fan removed. I've seen this happend plenty of times where a fan is removed for being near the field and yelling profanities or racial slurs at players.

Shouldn't there be a Yankee in this picture, and Pedro calling them "Daddy"!
