Title: 100 greatest guitarist
Post by: G.Love on September 04, 2003, 09:00:00 am
Rolling Stone has got to be out of their f***ing minds!!!

 Kurt Nobrain @ #12!!!
Fat Boy Jerry Garcia @ #13!!!

these and others ahead of Eddie VanHalen (#70) and David Gilmour (#82). Edge could have been a little closer to the top as should G. Harrison!!

 What a load of crap!

i saw Jeff Beck and BB KIng at wolftrap the other nite...it was a really good show

I didn't even know that kurt cobain played guitar..i thought he just carried it around with him on stage like Bono, but could not actually play...

this is a pretty dumb list

The notable absence of Yngwie Fucking Malmsteen discredits the entire endeavor.
Title: Re: 100 greatest guitarist
Post by: sonickteam2 on September 04, 2003, 09:20:00 am
yeah, the list sucks

I guess Les Paul couldnt have been any better than 46, even though 1/2 of that list probably played his guitars!
Tom Morello, Eddie Van Halen, and Gilmour were also robbed.

But its nice to know that Ike Turner is a better guitarist than Van Halen, Gilmour and Randy Rhodes.  go Ike.  what?
Title: Re: 100 greatest guitarist
Post by: on September 04, 2003, 09:22:00 am
It should read "100 Greatest ROCK Guitarists."

The list seems rather blues-heavy.   A lot of fusion greats are missing, too.   Link Wray was a good addition, IMHO.

 Anyway...where's Denny Dias (http://www.broberg.pp.se/sd_katy.htm)?

in fact, they left out Joe Satriana and Steve Vai....apparently they forgot the whole hair band guitarist guy thing altogether....clearly, not much thought really goes into this.

Who are the voidoids?

 What a question.

Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine were friends and formed Television together. Hell left before Television recorded much or got famous. He started his own band Richard Hell and the Voidoids. Their first album blank generation is a corker. Songs off of it often seem to be played before shows.

Why is there no Johnny Marr of the Smiths?

Robert Quine?  Voidoids?  tell me this all happened before i was born.

Television, i know.  Voidoids, never heard of them....

and i thought my indie card was revoked a long time ago.

Seeing as I'm a humble alt rocker, they really should have handed it to my main man Lee Ranaldo.

No, Richard Hell and Robert Quine are two different people.  Was it Quine that played with Matthew Sweet?  Or was that Ivan Julian?

How can you trust a list that doesn't even mention Elliott Randall?

Elliott is probably best known for his riveting guitar solo on "Reelin' in the Years". A solo considered by Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page to be his favorite of all time.  (http://www.dandom.com/halloffameweek/events.html#chuck)

i'm looking at allmuic and robert quine did most of the studio work for matthew sweet... i believe ivan julian, also of the voidoids, often went on the road with matthew sweet in place of quine.

the editing on this list is pretty piss poor...  i'm like who the hell is 79 Cliff Gallup of the Blue Caps (1997).  turns out the Blue Caps were Gene Vincent's backing band, before i was born i might add   :D ,  and Cliff Gallup was a major influence of Jeff Beck.  still it would be nice if they had listed Gene Vincent or Richard Hells name in the listing.  i'll be turning in my rockabilly card today...

They should title it "100 ROCK guitarists with the most name recognition", although what's Ali Farka Toure doin in there?   If you're gonna just say best guitarists of any style, I think the top guys would have to be classical guitar players

Sorry, no one is more deserving or more absent than  the jazz greats.  McLaughlin at #49??  No Al Di Meola, Django Reindhart, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell?  And, in an unrelated genre, Kevin Shields at #95?  Puh-lease.

Agreed with the Scientist that Johnny Marr deserves a spot too.

If Johnny Marr is not in the top five, it's just proof the list is a load of bollocks, like any other list that comes out.

Neil Young!!! I'm a fan, don't get me wrong, but hardly one of the great guitarists..

 Lou Reed...same as Neil Young.

Carlos Alomar! I didn't see him on there either, he should be top five also.

 .

Don't get me wrong...I love Johnny Ramone, but he's NOT top 100 material! If it was the 100 most INFLUENTIAL then maybe I could see that. Where's Bob Mould?  He's a hell of a guitar player.

And where is Ace Frehely? He belongs up there.

If you're going to put Ace Frehley on the list, you might as well put my father in law on as well.

For those of you who are adding to the list, who would you take off of the list?
Title: Re: 100 greatest guitarist
Post by: mankie on September 05, 2003, 03:00:00 pm
The morons that put this list together would probably have Springboard, Dylan, Cobain, Waits and Lydon on a list of best "vocalists"!

I'd take off:

 #95 Shields
 #80 Quine
 #76 Toure
 #79 Gallup
 #61 Turner
 #59-60 Greenwood, O'Brien
 #17 White
 #12 Cobain

For the most part the list is fine, but the placements outside of the top five are ridiculous.

I find it strange that not too long ago Rolling Stone proclaimed Anson Funderburgh as one of the greatest guitarist of the past 20 years, and he's nowhere on that list.

I think all of those artists are effective "vocalists". Good singers, no, but good vocalists.

I love that the Radiohead guitarists are ahead of EDDIE VAN HALEN. What does that even mean?  The list often confuses producing (Kevin Shields) or songwriting (Lou Reed) with guitar-playing.  For starters, give me Slash, Dr. Know, and Richard Lloyd. . .

Rolling Stone is ok for music news, but totally sucks ass for music criticism.  These lists used to be really good, like the 20th Anniversary top 100 albums.  Now they're random and always seriously flawed.  And confusing.  Trying to wrap my head around Lou Reed being a better GUITAR player than Eddie Van Halen, when he's never even the best guitar player on stage, is more difficult than calculus.

Not saying that Ramone and the guy from RHCP are better than Marr.

I am saying that Thompson is infinitely better than Marr or the other two and if Thompson is only 19th then there's no way Marr belongs higher.
