Post by: carolinee on September 04, 2003, 06:04:00 pm

I googled it, duh.  The only thing I can find is taht it is part of the UMBC campus.  Nothing about seating, capacity, or location on campus.

Mapquest or Yahoo's directions.

Neither are perfect sources but they've helped me get around DC, which is no easy chore when you don't know the town. (They've gotten me lost too.)

my suggestion is save your money and go see The Dirtbombs and The Sights at the Ottobar on 11/6... you then have enough money to see The Cynics, The Von Bondies, The Woggles, etc when they come in town.

the following is scarastic... i wonder how that drum sound they spent some many hours to find in the studio will sound in the umbc fieldhouse... i'm guessing it will have a bit more reverb in it.

A fieldhouse?! I thought this was supposed to be a warm-up club tour. What a strange (and poor) choice of venue.

LOL...they're still using this shitty venue?  Guess I'm officially starting to feel old.  Last show I saw there was the Ramones with Frank Black opening in 1994.  It's at the University of Maryland...a bit smaller than Bender Arena. I think they did some work on it or something, but it was pretty gawd awful when I saw that show. Plus I had trouble finding it.  Anyway, that's one show I think I'll safely pass on.  I'd rather save my dimes to go to NYC to see Echo & the Bunnymen...got my tickets yesterday.   :)

Where would you guys suggest they play? Of course they're going to go with a larger venue where they can make the most money. Five years from now, they'll be reduced to playing places like JAXX, and their fans will have moved on to some other flavor. Better make the $$ now.

Bunnyman, I think you're talking about the great Ritchie Coliseum in College Park, which was my favorite local venue until 9:30 came along. Never saw a bad show there.

Of course I meant the new 9:30.  Concerts at Ritchie were always crazy.  The rundowness of the place I guess leant itself to that.

I helped bring many of those scary shows to Ritchie.  Loved the place other than the bird crap and dealing with the University to get barricades and other things done.

But UMBC is also the University of Maryland in Baltimore county.  It is a similar room to what Ritchie was (they totally renovated it for the worse), but bigger.  Much bigger, Ritchie could hold 1800 (well officially less but that is what we sold...).

I don't buy that you all can think the Strokes music is that bad, this stinks of backlash, the album is not nearly as bad as a lot of crap that has come out since, it isn't bad in the way that the vines is horrible.

And Sonick, again, please don't be so negative, don't make me point out every time that you are either.

No, hip is hating them after hearing the rough mixes of their first album that you got from a friend of a buddy of someone who knows someone in the band.

i think i dislike the Strokes because they were just thrown in with the White Stripes...although, it seemed more like the other way around.  I liked the White Stripes and then all of a sudden they were second fiddle to a crappy band that everyone said "the white stripes sound like the strokes"

So you let the opinions and impressions of other people dictate what you like and dislike?

I am half with jadetree on this......

 lets see....

The vines album is surprisingly much better than their live show. The album is actualy pretty good.

As for the strokes, well a lot lot of you lot are fickle, fey, fraudsters. You support them on the way up, then when they get somewhere you try and knock them back down.

The strokes may not be the greatest rock band ever, but are they really any worse or better than interpol or the white stripes? Is this it? is a pretty enjoyable listen and when they supported doves, they were one of the few support bands, I had never heard of before the show, to really get me to sit up and pay attention.

At least I'm consistant in calling them all shite....credit where credit is due though, White Stripes are the best of a bad bunch.

much worse.  much much worse.  although i must say the most grueling live show i have seen in a while was Interpol at Coachella.  they insisted on playing the first 8 bars of "Untitled" 4 times because they kept fucking it up...i mean, really, cut to the next song, or pick up where you left off, i have been out in the sun all day and i am too tired to stand almost.

Being a student at UMBC, I will report that the Fieldhouse is mostly used for sporting events and high school graduations.

The last concert there was Good Charlotte around six months ago.

Way worse than the White Stripes.  And I don't hate the Strokes, I can take 'em or leave 'em, but the White Stripes are in a different league.

So funny you mention the Ontario Theater, because I just found out about it this weekend!  It's on the south side of Columbia Road across from the Safeway -- it's on the corner and now it's some kind of catch all discount store.  I missed it by a few years, as i didn't move her until 1990, but the guys talking about it were here in the early/mid 80s.  What a trip, huh?

And for the cold, I have a friend who SWEARS by Zicam -- it's zinc stuff you shoot into your nose, and it's supposed to cut down the time your cold lasts.  I can't vouch, but some people swear it's a cure.

1st, Good Charlotte! THen. The Music As A Weapon Tour. Now, The Storkes at UMBC. How did this school become a new hotbed for music? When any tour make their stop in Baltimore, they gor Recher Theatre, Fletchers, Thunderdome, Bohagers or Towson University to hold concerts. Now, UMBC is entering the mix. What's up with that?

The Room's On Fire!
 Updated 00:02 PDT Thu, Sep 11 2003
Since hitting airwaves and stages in 2001, The Strokes have been pretty hot property. This time around, it's one of their rooms that's on fire.
The band has announced their first tour in nearly one year. Dubbed the Room On Fire tour, after their forthcoming sophomore disc, The Strokes will take to theatres from East to West Coast and back again, starting October 9.
As rumored, the Kings Of Leon will indeed be supporting for the North American leg, as will Regina Spektor.
The Strokes also have plans to hit Europe in December, although venues have yet to be announced. Most of the major cities in and around the continent are on the itinerary, with a few U.K. gigs planned as well, including a two-night stand in London.
However, if you don't see your hometown on the list, don't cry just yet. According to the band, "we'll come back and do more next year. So if your city is not there, we're sorry we can't make it this time. We'll be through soon!"
Meanwhile, back on the Web site, The Strokes have put a little MP3 of their new single, "12:51," up for a listen. That should tide fans over until Room On Fire gets released October 21.
Speaking of Strokes goodies online, it looks like everyone who's subscribed to their mailing list will have first crack at tickets for the upcoming tour. Not only that, the stubs will come at a much lower service charge.
Try ticketing.concertmaps.com/thestrokes1 for information. Some shows are already on sale.
