Title: White Stripes at GW
Post by: TheNomad on June 02, 2003, 11:11:00 am
Their website says they are playing in D.C., at GW, on July 26.  Anyone have any ticket info for the show?  I can't find it on ticketmaster or any other ticket site.

Yes, I'll be going.

It's an IMP show, so shouldn't Volume subscribers be receiving the password?

Well I havent had a copy of volume for a few weeks, have you? I guess the new issue is imminent.

 I will probably go.

Thanks for the info.  My latest Volume copy doesn't have a password for a pre-sale.  If someone has it and could post it (or email it to me pios76@yahoo.com) that would be much appreciated.

Anybody get a password?
Title: Re: White Stripes at GW

No password, and volume had the placebo password.

so White Stripes is either a radio thing or a fan club thing. I am guessing the later as no one has any info.

If you sign up at DC101 they are supposed to send you the password.  I signed up and haven't received anything.

When you get it would you please be so kind as to share?

I think its funny that more people are going mad for placebo tickets on this site than the white stripes.

Have the white stripes suddenly become passe?

Hipster backlash.  It's not cool to be down with Jack and Meg, they're too "mainstream"

Or maybe because they were awful live, I still love the albums though.

Jadetree is deaf, dumb and blind. He would rather play pinball.

Everyone else said that the White Stripes were great live when they came to 930 last apart from chadboy/evilsatan.

But he is in love with Dolly Parton so its maybe not so surprising he wouldnt like them.

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot I have to agree with everyone, and I am sure they will be EVEN BETTER in that gym.

I thought the 9:30 show was great, as did all the people I was with.  I think Jadetree is the first naysayer I've heard.

 Bad jadetree.  non-conformity is Unamerican.

actually, sorry to be so flippant.

 you said,

"Or maybe because they were awful live"

I think it is then reasonable to say that that was not a consensus opinion.

Do you not think that is fair? If not you are saying that you have become the sole judge of the quality of a concert?

Fine that is fair, but just so facts are straight, I was with two other people who both thought it was crap as well.  Probably a case of expectations that were too high, and a show that came off to me as a novelty act.

 nov·el·ty    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (nvl-t)
 n. pl. nov·el·ties

 1.   The quality of being novel; newness.
 2.   Something new and unusual; an innovation

Actually I do think they are a novelty act in the way you probably meant.

Which if you accept that they are a novelty act means you would be more likely to enjoy their show.

But its all just entertainment, right?

Why have presales? Isn't that a bit elitist? (of course it is, this is America)

If it's to get tickets to the fans, wouldn't it make more sense to have pre-sales for people who aren't fans so they can hopefully become fans? The existing fans will get tickets anyway, either when they go on general sale or via a scalper.

When I become a member of the next "it" band I won't have a presale...markie can camp out all night like the rest of the sad twats!   :p
Title: Re: White Stripes at GW
Post by: markie on June 04, 2003, 05:00:00 pm
the best thing about pre-sales is you cannot go to an outlet to access them. Therefore you have to pay the full ticketmaster (tm) service charge, cool huh?

i was on the ticketmaster webpage looking for info on the smith center, and as i was reading, i came across this person to call if i need special seating arrangements:  contact gilma cockram

Post by: Bags on June 04, 2003, 05:08:00 pm
Yeah, this whole pre-sale thing is really beginning to get ludicrous.  I tend to know about them because, well, this is my primary 'hobby' so I spend a lot of time on it, but I think it's crappy that fans who aren't perhaps *the* most fervent could get screwed.

Thank god 96% of the bands I like don't usually even sell out, much less bother with pre-sales.

Imagine being a Brit over here when bands that sell out large venues in minutes over there can hardly fill the 930...now that's a treat.

I don't know if any one else got it, but I just got an email from 9:30 saying:

"Elephant," the new release by The White Stripes is quickly being heralded as one of the best albums of the year. The peppermint-popular duo Jack and Meg White proved at Coachella that they've got a great live show.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, June 7 @ 11am through Ticketmaster, but you're getting them first!

 Presale Starts Thursday, June 5 @ 10am-Friday June 6 @10pm
 Password is : candycane

It appears that it is a different password. Just thought I would let you all know. It also contained the password for Placebo.

Too recent for me...actually, the first time I saw said pillock on telly was back in Ireland a couple of years ago. I honestly thought he was a comedian doing a spiff on teenie-bopper idols, I had no idea we were supposed to take him seriously.... UK's Andrew WK if you like!

$41 for one White Stripes show... they had better put a freaking great show on.  Ain't it great how ticketbastard now hides the handling fee on the order page and not it include on the page with the "convience" fee.

isn't this a general admission show? is it worth the $11 to get these presale tickets when i can just buy them at the club for less? i doubt it will sell out right away, don't you? this is d.c. after all.
Title: Re: White Stripes at GW
Post by: markie on June 05, 2003, 10:25:00 am
Well I got an HFS email saying it was bloodcell, which did not work. So I tried candycane and it did work.

 Perhaps candycane is a pre-pre-sale.

$78 for 2 tickets..... they better be good.
Title: Re: White Stripes at GW
Post by: kosmo vinyl on June 05, 2003, 10:27:00 am
since i was off seeing the luray caverns yesterday, i didn't get a chance to weigh in on the white stripes at 9:30 club show.  personally i thought the show at the black cat was much better than the 9:30 show last year.  the 9:30 show felt padded without the rawiness of the seeing them at the black cat.  then again there sometimes the first time you see a band will always be the best time you've seen that band.  the white stripes maybe one of those bands for me.

normally i would follow this logic... but seeing as the general sale is on a sat and would probably forget they were on sale, i just punted and paid the charges.  and yes there will probably be loads of tickets available, but the show did sellout at the 9:30 club the last time.

ticket prices rarely bother me. Infact I think shows are normally great value compared to say, the cinema or their price in Britain.

The thing that bothers me is the tickets have a face of $30, yet they cost $78. I wish the price on the ticket was the price you paid, I dont like surprises.

I wouldnt pay $40 to see Dave Gahan though, I wouldnt go and see Huey Lewis either, but it would be fun taking the piss out of someone who had.

ERR, I dont like lentils? I always think it should have a Y in it probably because it always makes me think of

I think about spelling and typing long words correctly. I dont spend so much effort for the more mundane ones.

I had lentils for din-dins last night actually....Fresh Fields make some really nice lentil burgers. A bit pricey but just the job for a treat once in a while....they even taste great if you crumble them up in pasta sauce.

Indeed I can, the correct spelling is "penne" and penne pasta goes well with the lentil burgers and pasta sauce I mentioned earlier.

Not my point.  How exclusive is presale if you can get exclusive presale passwords from:

The band (fair enough - assumes you're a fan)
The venue (if it were a smaller venue like 9:30, it would make sense, but GW Arena - they don't exactly have a flurishing fan base like say the 9:30 Club)
The Radio Station (every Tom, dick and Markie got that password)
Wherever else you get a password that I didn't happen to be signed up on....

 ????

Not my point.  How exclusive is presale if you can get exclusive presale passwords from:

The band (fair enough - assumes you're a fan)
The venue (if it were a smaller venue like 9:30, it would make sense, but GW Arena - they don't exactly have a flurishing fan base like say the 9:30 Club)
The Radio Station (every Tom, dick and Markie got that password)
Wherever else you get a password that I didn't happen to be signed up on....

 ???? [/b]
Passwords and codes like that are usually tracking devices. Sometimes it's a rep's name that is used. Have you ever noticed how often an ad on tv will instruct you to ask for Judy? (That's a common tracking name used.) It's not even a real person.

In this case, they may be tracking website vs venue vs airplay, etc... Keep in mind, they want to sell tickets so they don't want to make it too difficult to obtain these things. It's not that exclusive. This is the record industry which is sales. It's quite common to research things like that by following trails. Gives them an idea of who to market to and where to spend their advertising dollars.

here's the deal:
Volume is the snail mail newsletter we send out each month.  Each month there is a "Volume Presale" for a higher profile 9:30 show - an added bonus for Volume subscribers, perhaps an incentive to subscribe.  If you want to get on that list, email your snail mail address to Volume@930.com, and then you won't have to wait for someone to post the password on the Forum.
The email list receives offers of its own, often related to I.M.P. shows as well as 9:30 shows - this most recent blast included the White Stripes presale offer and a "girl gets in free with a paid guy" offer for Burlesquefest next Friday.  If you want to get on that list, ping your address on over to list_serve@930.com.
And as for the whole "presale" thing - have they become so ubiquitous that they're kind of silly?  Perhaps.  But can you imagine what people would be saying if DC101, WHFS and the band's fan club all had offers to get tickets early and we didn't avail you, our devoted clientele, of the same?
