Jonathan Richman? Great news! I don't like the fact that the whole thing will start at 6:30, but will try to make it to the show.

It will be too expensive for Mankie, perhaps Dupek will go?

it will give you time to see Beulah at Black Cat later in the evening.
don't know if i'll go this time, but Jonathan is highly entertaining.

Why the heck is Eric Idle coming to town the same night Eddie Izzard is at the Warner (well, he's playing two nights, but I'm going the 27th)? I'm hoping this sells out and they add a second night.
-
Woo woo woo -- Eddie Izzard!! I'm so excited.
What is Eric going to do, sing Monty Python songs? While that would be great, I'm not paying $40. I've been paying too much for too many concerts of late.

no amount of money is too much for Eric Idle

I have no idea who Eric Izzard and Terry Idle are. I guess I'm out of the loop. Are they members of BMRC?
-
I think you would like Eric Izzard.......
I think he would be right up your alley......

So apparently Maritime who is opening for the Weakerthans is the band that was shortly called In English and features all but one form the promise ring and Eric from D Plan
-
Arlo is opening the Shins CMJ show, if any of you are going. We will be there that weekend, but no news on ticket availability yet.
Jesse Sykes and the Swwet Hereafter, who is excellent (think Mazzy Star meets Cowboy Junkies) is opening the Barsuk showcase warming up for Death Cab and Long Winters. She's also opening a few shows for Iron and Wine, but Philly is closest for that show.

Did you see that Iron and Wine is playing with Beulah and John Vanderslice in Atlanta?
I am not crazy about Jesse Sykes.
-
Yup on Atlanta.
We saw Jesse at Bumbershoot last year and liked her a whole lot. Phil Wandscher, who was the Whiskeytown guitarist in their heysay, is her boyfriend/guitarist.

I noticed they were touring but did not see a DC date, I saw Jurado a year or two ago and it was awful, but it was during the tour when he had released his "rock" album rather than his folkier material. On his last tour he told raebyddet he was having trouble finding a venue in DC due to the closing of Metro Cafe. He suggested Iota, we shall see.
-
I found the info on HIS website. There's nothing listed on the Subpop site for Rosie, just an empty date. It says DC and venue TBA on his site. Iota seems the logical place, since she has played there two or three times in a row. Though technically, it's not in DC.
I just have his new one, which is good. I would say that all of the songs but one are on the folky side. And indeed, the one rocker is by far the worst song imo. Though Celeste liked the rocker.

my favorite is Rehearsals for Departure, the first song on that (Ohio) is one of my favorite tracks by any artist, but I may be biased because it is the first album I had of his, last time I checked his website (last week?), it said "be back soon"

Uh oh...same night as Aesop Rock, Mr Lif and Murs at the Ottobar. A serious conflict for all of you crazed underground hip hop heads out there...here's lookin at you, Mankie.
-
same night as the Decemberists as well.

good, hopefully that will keep the Decemberists crowd from getting too large

Well If I am in America, I will be at the decemberists.... I am getting to be rather fond of their two odd albums.

I don't know, but remember how full Ted Leo was?

Is there reason to believe you won't be in America?

But Ted Leo was full because everyone wanted to see his support act, right.
TedLeo is much more famous then the decemberists. When have you seen the decemberists posters about, or seen them on Mtv2?

It is hard to tell who is more famous anymore, I am constantly surprised by sizes of crowds.

If I ever get a visa, I will have to leave the US to get it. I got my J1 visa-waiver after waiting since April. H1b applications for an extra $1000 are adjudicated in 15 working days....... I need to do a few things before I apply.

So am I, like Thursday and Sparta, and everyone only wanting to see Thursday........
But I cannot imagine the decemberists being hip with the kids, at all.
-
Au contraire Markie. I believe The Decemberists will be hip with the kids. Pitchfork loved them as did Salon, who compared them to Neutral Milk Hotel.

Really I meant the 17 year olds who like Thursday. Do they read oitchfok and salon?
I cannot see them being at the decemberists. Are the Decemberists more popular then Lambchop?

And I know that governments wait until the very last minute to issue visas. Use to drive us all nuts when I was a travel agent. They would never, ever come into the office until the day before the trip and then they would be Fed Exed and usually arrive at the end of the working day.
They better let you stay!!!! A visit home is okay but they better let you back in to raise some havoc. ;)
Damned Maryland wants to give Social Service benefits to illegal aliens yet they give tax paying foreigners like Markie a hard way to go. It's so insane.

Yeah, that was a big feature on them in Salon. Should attract some attention, though that's happened before, and I've expected a crowd where none showed.

I have already been waiting since April...... But lets leave it now. I just makes me grumpy. Talking about it is not cathartic in any way.

That Neutral Milk Hotel comparison keeps getting used, and is pretty inaccurate

yeah, they are shite. Besides what the use of comparing one obscure band with another obscure band, so they are obscure then, hey?

Just do what most folks do...take a bus to Ciudad Juarez and then walk back across the border. You're in like Flynn then. Full benefits, too!

thanks, It does remind me of the scientologists who walk up to you on the street and offer you free personality tests. "I am sorry I dont have one" really pisses them off.

you have listened to NMH for about 2 seconds, you had the same reaction when first hearing Beulah, Ted Leo and Decemberists

Twas enough. Actually I listened to abit more than that, but not a lot more. It is just that I am predisposed to hate anything you like first.

-
Seriously, I'll give you about three more months before you start gushing about Neutral Milk Hotel.

I wouldn't call Neutral Milk Hotel obscure. I'm quite certain they could pack the Black Cat and get a decent crowd over at the 930 if Mangum decided to get things going again.

Myself, I'm very neutral about Neutral Milk Hotel.
-
I dunno, I saw NMH open for Superchunk at the Cat in 1998?, and the place wasn't packed. Have they grown that much in popularity since breaking up.
I didn't care for them very much, but thought they were better than Superchunk, who blew.

How does NMH compare to APPLES IN STEREO?

Better.....IMHO.

They share members, I believe. What Apples albums do you know?
FYI: AIS was originally called "The Apples" but they wanted to avoid legal hassellhoffs from apple recordes, so they changed it.

Actually, Rob Schnieder and Jeff Mangum moved from GA. to Denver together where Robert started AIS,Jeff did not play with them to my knowledge.NMH was Jeff's solo effort. He did incorporate a few musicians when playing live, don't think Rob was involved though.I think it was a few mewmbers from Olivia Tremor Control that joined him. It's been awhile since I was into the whole Elephant 6 thing so my memory could be a little fuzzy, but that's it in a nutshell as far as I can remember. As for comparing the 2,it's like comparing apples to oranges ;)

They dont come around for years and then they are around two times in 6 months, what an odd band.

They sent an email out saying they are touring more than usual to make up for the fact they spent more time in Europe than the US the last few years.
