so who interested in a little preshow action before Ash tonight? a drink or two possibly a bite to eat....
we could do at the Saloon which I know some regulars are partial to these days or even possibly Cafe Saint-ex or Ben's. 7:30ish sound about right
-
Kosmo, do you have any idea about the timing of the show tonight? I have a dinner, but want to be sure to get over there. Obviously, I'm still hoping and assuming a sellout is not in order.
-
i don't see ash going on until 10.30 or 11 since they have two openers.
-
Well I will be going to Pollys.....
at around 7.30 or so.....
something to do with $2 vodka cocktails....?
-
looks like kosmette and i are heading straight to the black cat tonight... kosmette is up to her eyeballs in rowdy third graders today and needs some downtime before the show.
-
I thought $2 vodka cocktails would be the perfect antidote to teaching cabbages.

cheap cheap ash ticket to a good home. i don't think i'll make it tonight. boo hoo.
-
fyi the just jinger the first band playing tonight is the biggest selling south african rock band, who are living in Springfield these days trying to break into the us market. from the song samples i've heard it's by the numbers altrnapop, not horrid not great. still might be interesting to witness...

Does anyone remember Johnny Clegg? I liked his stuff.
-
did someone say south african? oh boy. i have a weakness for those lads (lads in general, not the band, have never heard of them). okay, now i just might have to go.
-
Kosmo, did you hear back from the black cat about tickets?
-
not a dickie bird...
-
I was just on the Ash site and apparently their Richmond show was cancelled because Alley Katz could not afford to pay them. How does that happen?

No, I've moved up to the 4th grade when south park did.
-

hhhrrrmmmmnnn.

Sigh, since I am going alone(damn busy girlfriend) and have no ticket currently, I guess I should but tickets early and check out the openers. Do people on the board often go to shows alone? Am I a pussy for not really wanting to? Though i am, cause Ash at the Black Cat is unmissable. And why oh why do i still have my membership privelages taken away still? Come to think of it, when I became a member I never acquired that British accent I thoguht I would, or that sudden love for alt-country.

Two things, redsock -- I go to shows alone during the week every once in a while, and I enjoy it actually. I'm pretty focused on the music, I don't drink much, and I can leave whenever I want. And I'm a chick, so I probably stand out more than a lone dude. If you're feeling lonely, hopefully the band is good enough to have some fervent fans up near the front -- move up there, the energy is infectious.
And I think you lost your membership because all your postings in your postings count were lost when they changed the message board's website a few weeks ago. Same thing happened to me, though I'd been a junior member previously, with only about 75 postings. But, when I mentioned it in a couple messagres (after having old timers refer to my newbie status), after a good chunk of postings, I was promoted!! Yes, I'm a member -- Thanks mods!!

Just go yer big pussy...I go to shows on my own all the time. There's always someone to chat to.
-
Just go! Look for the cluster of people who seem to know each other up towards the front and listen for a few British accents. That will probably be us.
I have to go alone all the time but have met some wonderful people here through this board. Now I don't have to be alone everytime I go to a show. Believe me, it is much, much worse for we women when you are alone, especially in socially cold DC.
PS: If you find us, you automatically will become an official Member. ;)
-
want my ticket? its free. you just need to come by and get it. i'm the sw/capt. hill area.
and i go to shows alone all the time. iota, black cat, 930, doesn't matter. i go for the music. works out well. much easier to get to the front and get a set list too!
have fun tonight guys. i feel like shit. and i really wanted to see ash again. its been months!

that was fecking great.........i love timmy............
thankyou lefty for the brilliant photos i of course got timmy to sign em.............gawd he's hot
brilliant performance from start to finish...............
-
I second that. A really great show by Ash. The new songs sounded very impressive.
-
short attention span review
ash - the little girls and the rest of us understood.
white light motorcade = ash - (snap + crackle + pop)
just jinger - lather rinse repeat
hats off to the lads and lassie of ash for coming out and playing three year old songs like there were just released yesterday. the drummer like the jams drummer really puts the snap! in the bands sound, and make it look easy as well. really liked the new material can't wait for the new record. my only nit was lack of the early stuff, although i can't think of anything else i would like to have hear. the band should have shorten the encore that enemy single was pretty awful.
the black couch in the back was awful comfy and white light motorcade awful loud. me thinks they were hiding something with their amps turned up to 12.
which brings us to just jinger. kosmette nailed them half way through the first song with "I've heard this band before". bland alternapop played by competent musicians. a dash of u2, coldplay, dave mattehews, etc. typical song ended with "blah blahter blah" x50. each repeat done with slighty different phrasing and "heart" felt emotion. even more pointless was the percussion interlude that like the rest of the set went on way to long. you could hear the snigger in the audience when they proudly announced their upcoming show at jaxx...

I thought they only went up to 11?
-
how long was ash's set? when did they go on?
-
10:45pm and played for 75 minutes...

since no cucumbers were harmed during their set, one can only assume that they had the special little willie amps that go to 12...

Yeah yeah, I went and was rather glad i did. Made a night of it with a burger from the cafe too. So glad I saw Ash, few bands can run through so many great songs in sucha short period of time. Of course, few bands have the majority of their songs clocking in at under 3 1/2 minutes too. White Light Motorcade sucked, even though I did see Tim hanging out watching them, and he seemed really into it. I learned my lesson, going solo isn't all that bad.
Oh, and Kosmo, the songs "Envy", not "Enemy." Not one of my favorites either.
-
lefties photos were very cool......
And that was a very good show. It had me jumping up and down like a 14 year old girl....
After the delgados slagged off Ash, I did think it funny that Ash's bass guitarist didnt even know who the delgados were......
-
*sniff, sniff*
Didn't make it. Had a friend in crisis, and it was 11:15 when I was heading home. Plus, had a fall in a manhole in G'town (like it wasn't bad enough that I was in G'town to start with!)
So, since I missed 'em, if I get an Ash album, what should it be??
-
68% of me says get 1977
30% of me Free All Angels
1% Trailer
1% post nuclear sounds
1977 has most of my favourite ash songs on it.
-
well seeing that 1977, Trailer and Free All Angels can probably be bought in total for under a tenner start there... stay away from from post nuclear sounds even the band hated it. free all angels is my fav much more polished then the early stuff. but the first two are worthy contenders.
-
If you can find an import of "Intergalactic 7s" or whatever their greatest hits cd is, you'll find every song they played last night, minus the new stuff, plus tons more, and a bunch of B sides. I forget what I paid for it, but it is worth it. Though, "1977" and "Free All Angels" are both great albums in their own right.

where do you do your CD buying....
Sure my copies didnt cost much, but I was patient in waiting for them to turn up second hand.... Actually come to think of it I bought free all angels new for $10, then found a promo of it for $1......
-
didn't you have a $1 copy of 1977?? and price for free all angels start out low... it still sells for $11 new at the kinectic records and bet it's around $10 as worst buys...
-
I think my replacement, coming to the US copy of 1977 came from Kemp Mill second hand for $7.....it is a promo though.
-
Kosmo, I missed you and Kosmette in the 'lounge' area. Poorlulu and Markie, where the Hell were you? I looked for you during and after the show both upstairs and downstairs but never saw you.
Definitely a fun show and I especially liked the new song called Orpheus that they did during the encore. Wasn't surprised to hear Tim say that this was the best reception ever that they've received in the US. Quite uncharacteristic of a DC crowd. They were wild from beginning till end.
Totally missed the 1st band. I think I liked White Light better live than recorded but they were definitely too loud. No one I'd go out of my way for but fun filler.
Got there late because of the monsoon I had to endure on my drive down from Baltimore. I tell ya, I don't know where the Ark of the Covenent is but I was certainly praying to find it last night! Thank God that I know the roads pretty well now. Besides being dark (which was the easy part) it was nothing but a wall of water. Visibility was almost nill. The roads looked like clouds that were raining upside down. Flashes of lightening that would literally blind you for a moment or so once they struck. I was completely shocked that I never saw any accidents at all last night. Traffic that is usually speeding along at about 70+ mph was down to about 20-30 mph. It was amazing how few cars pulled over. Md/DC/Va drivers must be pros now when it comes to any kind of rain driving. Someone should give us honorary Mariners licenses.
-
We must have been avoiding you then Jaguar....
We got trapped in pollys and got to blackcat 2 songs before White whatever finished. We hung around after the show both upstairs and downstairs.
Lulu had to get her hug from Tim.....
-
i managed to avoid everyone last night...............
where the hell was everyone?
oh and timmmmmmmmy,timmmmmmmmmmy timmmmmmmy..................

not really hard to figure out when the clubs website is hosted by tripod... looks like a pretty amateur outfit that gets lucky with the bookings once in awhile

I thought that was the one weak spot of the night. Never really was a coherent song, and sounds even messier live. Rest of the set was spot on. I'm glad that they've given up on playing nuclear sounds live, as it is indeed a pretty crap album. I think Tim realized that he should just stick with pop songs for a while, hopefully that'll last at least another album or two.
Just Jinger will probably become huge, open for Dave Matthews and take over the world. And I'll proudly say that I hated them right from the start.
-
you know not many bands start at jaxx and end up ruling the world, usually its the other way around.
just jinger will tour with sheryl crow and end up boring the world, seeing as they share management. i should bought one of their cds so i could unload on ebay for big bucks right after they break big. although they already failed to make a name for themselves in UK and i don't see the US market being any friendlier.

What exactly was it that Tim said about Dashboard Confessional? Between not remembering and not being able to hear all that clearly with the crappy sound, I'm not all that sure. Something about asking if we knew who he was and some people cheered. Then a wave of us booed. :D Finally, he said something about him being a fucker. I think he may have said that Dash.C. had said to him that they (Ash) suck. But I do remember Tim saying that he hated that fucker and that if we ever see him to tell him that he said "Fuck you!" That was great.
Bet that has something to do with why Ash cancelled out of the U. of Md. show. ;)

It wasn't Dashboard he said he hated. It was a guy in the crowd who had yelled "You Suck" at the same stopping point in the same song. He said he didnt want to get in to what we thought about Dashboard.
-
tim was recalling the time they were doing "burn baby burn" in dc and during the same stopping point in the song, some Dashboard fan yelled out "You Suck". Tim went on to say something like "next time you see the fucker will ya kill him for me"
-
a bit slow as usual

actually the promoter at u of md told me Ash wasn't even offered for that show... Ash probably wanted the night off. the show was wedged into btw a show in ma and ct. would you want to drive all that distance for a college show?
