.....well, you decide.
Billy Idol
9:30 Club
Sept. 14th
-
Man, we are being inundated by these 80s bands. Normally I'd love one or two of them, but it's such a flood that I've lost just about all interest. What do we think is at the root of the avalanche? Is it just simply that we're enough years out that it takes on the full nostalgia factor??
-
simple equation really
(thining hair + thining bankaccounts) X viagra = comeback time!
the beach boy tour riders on thesmokinggun.com are hilarious... they are never to be referred to as a nostalgia act.
-
It's because the vast majority of the new music us just plain SHITE! ;)
-
but so was most of the 80s music.
-
For once i agree with Mankie. ;) [/b][/quote]

It's because most people get lazy and decide not to explore any new music once they hit 30 or so. It's easier to listen to the golden oldies than it is to take the time to find good new music.
True, there is a lot of shite new music out there. But there is also a lot of good stuff if you're willing to sift through the shite.

I somewhat reluctantly went to see Billy Idol last time he played the 9:30 Club (2001?). And it turned out to be a really excellent show. Steve Stevens was boss.
-
Admit it Jeej, the company had corporate tix to the 930 club and the CEO was rewarding you all for a good fiscal year.

Dude--Keep that on the low-low. You're gonna blow my indie cred.

I've tried to find the good new music I really have....one or two decent songs on album doesn't cut it though. I've even shelled out good money for a few cd's hoping they'd grow on me.
Apart from a few exceptions, new music for the most part is boring and has a shelf life of about 15 minutes.

You saw him with Generation X in 2001?

No. But his Gen X roots allow him to be grandfathered in under the hipster bylaws.

Do these by-laws apply to everyone?

Yes. For instance, when you went to see Fatboy Slim, you retained your hipster status because of his Housemartins exemption.

So,....because of Rod Stewarts folksie background and later with the Faces, he's hiparoo then.
And why did you have to remind me about fatboy slim, I'd just begun to recover from that pile of camel feces.

I agree 100% with Rhett! There is a lot of great new music out there but you're not going to hear it on the radio. You need to dig through the shit to find the gold. Mankie, my mate, you do sound like my parents when they were deriding rock and roll back in my youth. Some people have a hard time excepting music that wasn't the soundtrack of their teen and early twenties years. I'm not saying you're like that....just sounds that way. :)

By the way...I don't listen to the radio unless it's AM to try to find out why the FUCK I'M STUCK ON THE FUCKING BELTWAY FOR 2 1/2 FUCKING HOURS TRYING TO GET THE FUCK HOME! Like last night    (oh, and Elliot in the morning on my drive to work)
I try to find good new music by going to the listening stations at various record stores.
Any other ideas?
-
Elliot in the morning? Is that 98 Rock or DC 101? You deserved to be called a wanker!!!! ;) I never listen to the radio....or very seldom. The radio over here is just as bad as it is there. I used to listen a little to Virgin in the mornings but they'd play the same shitty songs every morning! John Peel plays some good stuff but some very weird stuff too.
I usually go by reviews in the papers and magazines. You learn to trust some more than others. If the NME is pushing their flavor of the month, you've got to be weary. But some times their reviews are spot on. I personally like the reviews in Record Collector Magazine. They'll do both new and old reissued releases. Mojo is pretty good too.
-
yes, Elliot in the morning on DC101. He's such a retard but makes me laugh while I'm sat on the beltway trying to get to work...no harm in it!
-
ya know mank we we need to do is convene a group of like minded individuals and have a record shootout. where the people attending bring three newish records and present to those assembled. a quick blurb about why you like them and a couple choice tracks. i heard of other such groups having a good time sharing music this way.
i too find it daunting to wade through all that is new out there... pickup Magnet, CMJ, Mojo, etc and there are 30+ reviews to wade through. Bring back singles and 40 min records, know of this 70 of one good song and the rest filler.

Hey Mankie, how come no ones rated your member?

Piccadily radio used to be pretty good. "SWEENEY, GIVE IT THE FULL MONTY!" but that was years ago.
Is Mike Sweeney still around?

I'll have you know...my member was rated 4 stars for quite a while, but I think one of the moderators began to feel inferior so edited it out. It was my own fault by thanking the ladies and bringing it to the moderators attention.

The name does sound familiar Mankie but not too sure.

I noted on this board months ago that the 80s were making a comeback. It's the new "hip" decade mixed with some late Mod 60s.
These bands were there and are just taking advantage of their 2nd chance. Some of them were from the late 70s but were very much a part of the 80s culture so are part of the revival.
-
Tell that to all the people at the Drive By Truckers show.
