Bob Saget??
The guy that used to do Funniest Home Videos??
People pay money to see him??

Yeah he is a funny stand up comic. Wen I saw him, he riffed on America's Funniest Videos, saying it was a piece of crap, and just a paycheck.
Hopefully there are still tickets left. Bob and Jamie are funny as hell.

I guess that is next week now.
In that case, here's my next week:
Damo Suzuki/Kohoutek
Jens Lekman
Boris/Damon&Naomi

Yes, Jens Lekman is on my 'now next week' radar.

It's a total novelty act, but quite funny. Basically, you're paying to see the guy from Full House and Americas Funniest Home Videos, who many of us grew up watching when we were kids, tell a bunch of extremely dirty jokes and sing a few dirty songs about his formerly sparkling clean image.

rodrigo y gabriella

-
Rodrigo Y Gabriela V. Witchcraft V. Castanets V. Free Folk Phantasmagory night 2 is a tough call.
-
Castanets!
Rodrigo Y Gabriela bored me at Lolla. I couldn't understand why many people dig them when they play mostly cover songs.

Stars for sure.
Maybe British Sea Power.
Too bad the Middle Distance Runner CD release conflicts with the Stars concert, or else I'd go to that, too.
I wanted to see The Hives again, but I didn't get a ticket fast enough.
-
i'm not as crazy about the Stars new CD as i am about the previous one. they rocked the black cat the last time, with lower expectations and the great album. this time??

I'm worried about that combination of factors, as well. But friends from Ontario who have seen them multiple times tell me they've been very good recently--even without Genevieve, the violinist--so I'm not discounting them yet.
-
their show at the black cat was charismatic and polished -- very professional. despite doubts about their new album, i expect them to maintain standards. it's good to hear confirmation from your friends in the north...
if i have doubt about the event, it's because i want to check out x at be bar for once -- it collides with stars this saturday.
-
btw, anyone know when stars will take the stage on Saturday? 7 pm doors with no listed opening act...
-
Stars!!! I am in love with the new album. Whats not to love.
If i lived near d.c. i'd probably see cat power and Rodrigo Y Gabriela.

Oh, well if we're counting the next week too, I'll be at Rodrigo y Gabriela and then Billy Bragg the night after. Triple nighter, and they should all be awesome shows!
-
They moved the backstage witchcraft show to the mainstage. So now they're opening for trail of dead.
-
james murphy (dj'ing)

selling my tix for the hives & british sea power this week for a last minute trip to VEGAS ... i'm kind of angry that i'm missing them, both are top-tier live bands
billy bragg, jens lekman, and new pornographers next week

I don't know why but I figured Boris/Damon & Naomi would've been a bigger draw on here.

Maybe it's that the collective taste of this board is sucking more than it used to?
It's just as likely a reason.
I mean, we do have a guy defending coldplay in the "just announced" thread as the last post.
-
i've never heard anything by Boris nor Damon & Naomi, so i have no idea if they "suck" (whatever that means) or not. i wasn't serious, just fishing for an online skirmish. i'm willing to bet that these artists are indeed enjoyable.
and yeah, i probably do suck. my taste in music probably sucks too, but i don't care - i think i have a great music collection and go to mostly great concerts, which is all that matters to me :)
Originally posted by azaghal1981:

so - these artists are objectively good, therefore the lack of praise here indicates an absolute degradation of musical standards? :p
-
I wasn't referring to you or anyone else in particular; I know we do both have similar taste from past music-related conversations we've had. It was just a comment based on the observation that many great shows come and go with barely a mention here nowadays. And yeah I agree that "suck" is a poor word-choice but you used it first. :p

i saw them in june and they only played two covers, the rest were original songs. i was worried when i went b/c i didnt know if i'd like a show of acoustic, but it was really good. i guess you just have to like listening to acoustic guitar for 1+ hours. hopefully the crowd will be into it.

POLL: which show should i attend this coming thursday, considering that i haven't seen any of these bands before?
A) British Sea Power/Pela/1990s/Tiny Masters of Today/Stardeath and White Dwarfs/The Grey Race (Bowery Ballroom)
B) Simian Mobile Disco, with Invisible Conga People / James Fucking Friedmann / Professor Genius (DJ Set) (Music Hall of Williamsburg)
C) Stars w/ New Buffalo (Town Hall)
enter your votes now. i'm leaning towards option A.

I'd say 'A'. BSP has been lackluster in the past, but I heard the new EP and it's relatively killer. And the 1990s are all kinds of awesome.
And you know what Sweet, you might like Boris. It's arty metal.
I didn't post my involvement in that one because it's still another week away. But I'm really excited to see them. Same with Witchcraft.
-
Hmm...Screen Vinyl Image/Ceremony may be a better option than Octopus Project tonight.
I guess there's also the option of staying home and watching Larry Craig try to convince Matt Lauer that he isn't gay. That could be amusing too.
-
Good luck, Larry. We all know Matt Lauer is gay.

I see that the Hives show is an evening with, listed as 8pm doors and 9pm show... Does the black cat seriously think it can process an entire will call line in an hour?

The Black Cat has gotten much better with that process.
I'll be at the Hives and British Sea Power. Sad to be missing Witchcraft. I'll be at Jens Lekman and the Hip next week (and hopefully Billy Bragg).

C is sold out - so youll have to find a ticket to that one. I saw British Sea Power last night, and well the sound seriously sucked at Maxwells, but I was hoping for a more engaging performance. My friends are hardcore BSP fans and said theyve changed it up a bit and its not like their prior shows. Mellowing it up with old age I guess.
Based on that - Id still go with BSP but I want to see a lot of the openers is why I'd go. Ill be at Stars. Then off to see Uncut and other bands till the wee hours.

I was psyched to see this, but I haven't had any QT with my wife in weeks due to our work schedules, and since she's coming with me to the New Pornos show and I have Jens the night before, I'm opting to skip it. Bummed, but that's the price of getting old.

Yeah, somehow sending a high-rolling black dude with a huge rod to spend time with my wife doesn't sound like the ideal fix to that situation. Then again, I did miss the last Boris show. Hmmmmm....

I'd say B only because they've spent almost all their money on their light show. And according to their myspace page, that lightshow is awesome.

Over the weekend I was invited to a family friends' 21st birthday party with all of her girlfriends in Vegas. It happens to coincide with the opening week of March Madness. I'm pretty sure my head is going to explode.

so am i - as ive heard so much about their live shows. instead they stood around - moving just a bit here and there and while some of their songs sounded really good, i just wasnt at all moved by it. im really bummed i never saw them before.
i wonder if their lackluster performance was because it was the first show of the tour? oh and i was told they werent playing with their own instruments. not sure if that would have any effect on the band.

We were there for a whirlwind two nights. Most of the time was spent gambling (well, I don't really gamble, so I just spent it drinking my face off).
We did head to Sapphires on Saturday night. I'm not really much for strip clubs (sorry smackie), but the place was pretty nice: most of the ladies were good looking and friendly, and they treated the groom-to-be very well. One word of advice, though: don't offer to open the bar tab on your credit card. Oof. At least I got some airlines miles out of it...

Well sir, I've made a complete 360 on my Vegas night time entertainment. Well, 360 is a bit of a strech, so let's just say that my venues have changed. I tend to avoid Olympic Gardens, Cheetahs and Crazy Horse these days, opting for a few of the newer gentlemans clubs that are bit off the beaten path. Those other three have just gotten excessively crowded these days.
I really enjoyed Minx last time I was there - a little edgey and the girls aren't as hot as the other three, but they're not as fake either. They're crazy too and I love that. It's not your run of the mill experience. If you get the opportunity, catch Kennedy on the pole - without a doubt the best on a pole I've ever seen. Their private rooms are also a little less "supervised" then the big three. As best I could tell - anything goes.

i might be bailing on all shows tonight - as im pretty sick and i have to see the gazillion shows tomorrow. tonight is the only one that i would be ok with missing the shows - as one of the bands has a free show tomorrow and one of them has a residency at arlene's grocery. sooo.. it only leaves GoStation (i think?) that i want to see - and since theyre from NYC i can see them whenever.
dont think ill be seeing mr murphy tonight as much as id like to, but if im feeling up for it - ill let you know. these 27 shows are killing me. if youre going to be at other cmj shows let me know. ill be at a few venues tomorrow night and obviously the rest of the festival. i recommend uncut at fat baby on thurs night 11:30pm. kurosawa will be there as well.
are you seeing justice on saturday night? i cant wait to see midnight juggernauts.
oh btw - i got an email from jeremy at popscene. there is going to be free beer at the annex starting at 7:30 and free shows tonight. he'll be spinning with the other popscene djs in between sets. so you may wanna head down there - free is good! the little ones is one of the bands and sam champion - forgot who else is playing tonight.

Rookie. Strip Joints are CASH ONLY AT ALL TIMES. Don't even use the ATM. Nothing good can come of it.
-
I'm going to see the Wallflowers on Thursday. Next week, I'm seeing Danzig at Ramshead Live and She Wants Revenge at the Black Cat. The last week of October is pretty sweet - Ryan Adams and then Morrissey on Halloween.
-
Totally a rookie mistake. But I didn't have time to get cash before going, and when I saw the ATM fees, I figured it couldn't hurt. Plus, I know the guy's finance, so now I can still look her in the eyes and say with confidence "I didn't not pay for your husband's indiscretions...just the booze that lowered his inhibitions."
On a related note, my wife is going to be psyched to see a $300 charge for "Sapphires Restaurant."

I paused on buying tickets and lost out. It's been sold out for a while now. Should be an excellent show, but expect a 50/50 mix of gabbing and playing.
George W. Bush is the best thing to happen to Bragg's career. After the fall of the Wall, the commie cockney angle was totally washed up. The ascendancy of Bush and the Iraq war has made his act a relevant one again.

my advice for vegas ... if you have a big enough group (maybe 5+) and you want to go to a strip club and a nightclub, then getting a "host" is SOOOO worth the $$ ... it all comes down to jumping lines (of both the cab and club-entrance variety) and access (getting a table/couch at a strip club is well worth your $$ .... it's almost like being in a foreign country with a currency exchange rate (my general theory is 100 USD : 10 VD), and the cash you pay for a host is really worth it in the grand scheme of things
i'm getting in at midnight tomorrow, staying at the new planet hollywood (old aladdin), should be good times

I stayed there in June. It was quiet which was good for the tables and the sports book, but not so much for the nightlife. It's location makes it good to go elsewhere for club life though.

Hoya's right on this point, especially with the clubs. But if you have 5 or more, call Minx and have them send the limo over to get you. No cover, no charge, no line. Just be sure to tip the driver.

Get a huge garbage bag full of dollar bills, throw them in the air at a strip joint and start shooting people. Never a dull moment when that happens.

Speaking of which, what's the deal with "making it rain"? I'm sure the strippers don't mind the cash, but man, how do they not get pissed off that guys are literally throwing money at them?

I hate the practice as well, and I don't get it.
Which would you rather do - make it rain while she's dancing 5 feet away from you or slip it in her g-string while she's smiling at you from arms length? That's a no-brainer right?
-
Exactly. It just seemed like bullshit showing off anyway. In fact, at our club is was a rain off between a group of thugged out black guys and some white trust fund douche bags who wanted to be thugged out black guys.
Either way, I got more worthwhile contact and all I did was direct the ladies over to the groom to be.

That's pretty much what it is. It's just something you do because you can. And I doubt the strippers are turned off by it, cause money's an aphrodisiac in an environment like that. Think of it as a currency-based pissing contest.
I personally don't do it cause I don't like attention when I'm out doing my thing, but I can't begrudge 'em for it. Do you . . . Plus I'm no space to judge. I got issues of my own . . .

It certainly hadn't been open very long - the carpeting was still full of genie's and magic carpets...
They practically gave us a panorama suite because the hotel was empty. The restaurants weren't open and there was really only one lounge, but they had hot chicks in costumes (like french maids and dirty nurses) dancing on blocks which was entertaining for a while. The book was tiny and makeshift, but no lines made for easy betting, and I hit a couple of baseball parlays there so I have fond memories. It's also connected to the Miracle Mile mall with Pampas Brazilian Steakhouse in it which is perfect for a bunch of guys. I highly recommend it. And say hi to the ladies in the Bettie Page store - I eat that baby doll thing up...

So seriously...this guy is gay, right? Doesn't Craig know that 99 times out of 100, if you think someone is gay, they are?

Speaking of the upcoming New Pornographers show, if anyone has a spare ticket, please PM me. I'd really like to attend. Thanks!
-
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww I missed it. :( What was meant to be a 20-30 minute nap turned into a 4-hour one.

It was pretty brutal. He was laying on denials pretty thick, and not very convincingly so.
The worst part (which I didn't know pre-interview), was that he didn't tell his lawyer, family or wife for 2 months. Oof.

Tonight - British Sea Power -
I'll probably be in a tan Wesley Willis shirt and a jean skirt.
Say hi :)
-
I thought British Sea Power were outstanding last night. No foliage, taxidermy, or martial wardrobe, but musically they were just "on" (for lack of a better word). The new stuff sounded really good.
-
I agree...glad to hear the song "The Pelican" from the new EP...damn, all the songs on the new EP are great.

Sometimes I wish Billy Bragg would just shut up and play.

Hey, I just realized that it should be possible to see both Stars at the 9:30 Club and Middle Distance Runner at the Black Cat. Stars is an early show and should be over by 10:30 at the latest. I'd guestimate MDR will hit the BC mainstage around 11:00, no?
-
3 bands at the BC on Friday/Saturday has set times of 9:30/10:30/11:30
British Sea Power came on at 11:45 pm last night (3 bands in the bill). So yeah, you can make it to the BC before they go on stage... :)

I concur.
I was quite pleased with the show.

So I went for the concert double-header, and it actually worked out very well even though Stars went on a half hour later than they were supposed to start.
I thought Stars were very good, but not great. I doubt they can ever be a truly great band, but I am quite fond of them and wish them the best. I was never bored, but they never "blew me away" either. It was a fun show overall. Torq, Amy, and the rest of the band all did a fine job. The audience was a little lethargic at first, albeit appreciative, but livened up somewhat by the end of the show. The only other time I've seen Stars was when they opened for Death Cab in 2005. They caught me by surprise that night, and I pledge to see them the next time they came to town, but, unfortunately, their February 2006 headlining show at the Black Cat sold out before I (and a lot of other boardies, as I recall) could get tickets. I was probably a little more impressed with them back in 2005. Anyway, the show ended shortly after 10:30.
After that, I trekked over to the Black Cat and caught the last half of Dance Party's set. I gotta love a band called Dance Party. True to their name, they're all about getting the audience to move, and they've succeeded both times I've seen them.
But I was really there to see Middle Distance Runner. I thought they put on a fantastic show. They just keep getting better. They just nailed song after song, right up until the last song which they botched, but they put on a solid rock show. Honestly, I enjoyed Middle Distance Runner's set at least twice as much as Stars'. Picked up the new CD for just $5. I'm listening to it now, and it's solid.

what was with the blinding strobe and runway lights at the BSP show? i needed a pair of sunglasses.
BSP was tight until the last 20-25 minutes. sometimes less is more.
Stars put on a great show. Their studio work peaked at "Set Yourself on Fire" but they remain a charismatic and engaging live act. I'm glad they used the light and mist machines more artistically -- and moderately -- than the BSP acts.
-
Who's going to Yo La Tengo at the Birchmere (still undecided here...) ?
Definitely Jens Lekman next week.
-
Castanets>Damo>Jens>Boris :D
-
ohhh Castanets tonite??
-
yup
-
Someone may have already mentioned this, but the Stars show is up on NPR.org
I thought the show was great too. I actually like their new stuff alot. The song when he came onstage with all the lights on his jacket, man that song is so catchy.
-
it looks i can make it to castanets tonite as well!

If I don't have an advance ticket to a show, odds are I skip it.

I concur that Stars put on a great show. Also agree that "Set Yourself On Fire" was a better studio effort than "In Our Bedroom After The War" but it all comes across just fine live.
One thing I'd like to comment on is how Amy Milan's voice has gotten SO much better. I used to cringe at some of her earlier live singing, especially when she sang something like "Ageless Beauty". Her voice has gotten stronger and she can hit all the notes without fading off.
Looking forward to their show in Philly on Wed!!
-
I'm so fucking tired, and such a damn procrastinator that my Stars ticket went to waste, as I was coming back from Boston ALL of Saturday. Heard the show was great.

in other "this week" news. i'm just found out i'm a roller girl. yay. :)

i sat next to damo suzuki at the velvet last night. just very briefly. it was late, i needed to go home. i just wanted to be able to send a text to a buddy that said "i am (sitting next to) damo suzuki." sic alps were excellent. what's with all these righteously noisy/fuzzy/catchy duos these days? i'll be back at velvet tonight. spoon tomorrow. holly golightly wednesday. jens thursday. king khan saturday. too much shows. maybe if the series is good i'll skip a few.

If history holds, being roller girl will be the peak of your career.

Did anyone make it to the Film School show last night at R'n'R Hotel? Sadly, I thought it was tonight for some reason. Hate it when that happens . . .

holy shit, i could not agree any stronger ... it felt a little more like 65/35 gabbing/playing, and the half-hour-long 17th century history lesson was just a little more than i could take ... also, it kind of detracts from your message when you start with a ballad about a utopian band of pre-enlightenment socialists and move into lighthearted jokes about exchange rates and alan greenspan
his (singing) voice sounds fantastic ... the new songs sound (predictably) like boring shit, the old songs are just as vital as ever ... the updated "waiting for the great leap forward" was kind of fun ... highlight for me was "way over yonder in a minor key", fucking love that song

Does anyone else get the feeling that Joe looks at a band's history on Wikipedia, then uses the one member that has left the group as a reason why he doesn't like them anymore? ;)

I don't suppose anyone here went to Kelly Clarkson at DAR last night, or Sinead O'Connor at Strathmore?
I had tickets to both -- when Kelly on sale, didn't realize it was the same night as Sinead.
Any guesses as to which show I picked? I'll say this, I had a blast.
-
whatever. :D

Boris was great. Although I think Jens was better.
I don't think I've ever done two more different shows back to back.
