I think this may have been discussed already, but I can't track it down.
I can't get Kasabian's "Club Foot" out of my head, and I'm considering going to this show just to see them. What does The Music sound like? Any good?
-
sounds like sororiy girl Northern Virginia music.
-
You can look them up on launch.com - they have videos of The Music to watch (free). Just do a search and click...
-
i like the Music (markie does too)
I plan on going to this, but ONLY if i can't get Black Crowes tickets this week/weekend.
those bitches are like $50 a pop. yikes

Wow, I had no idea they were touring. Is it just those 5 shows at Hammerstein? Are they coming here?
-
The Music are great! A little Led Zeppelin sprinkled with some Jane's Addiction is the best way I can describe it. Robert Harvey, the lead singer, is fun to watch live.... Kasabian's new album is awesome as well and I am really looking forward to this show. done with my gushfest.
-
So basically they are cock rock?

Was Sonickteam2 the one who used to endlessly pimp the Music?

The Music are basically dance rock, but not with the constant throbbing beat of rave influenced dance rock along the lines of Radio 4 or anything like that. It's kind of Second Coming era Stone Roses had they mixed that Led Zep guitar sound with their dancier stuff from the late 80's early 90's. The riffs are huge, crunch quite nicely, and are constant throughout most songs. The rhythm section is very good. The vocals might take getting used to. On the first album he was less singing that yelping to the beat. On their most recent it's much more melodic, w/ a definite Perry Farrel lean to it. Rob, the lead singer dances around quite a lot and is fun to watch... I just hope he has dropped the downright gross pelvic thrusting on the mic stand move out of his repatoire. I couldn't imagine a better pairing at the moment than The Music and Kasabian, should be an awesome show. Morningwood will def be out of place as the opener however.

awesome, great description, thank you...
-
I like their first album and have seen them once at Nissan's 2nd stage. Haven't gotten my tix yet either though.
-
I think Arthwys nailed that one really good, couldn't have said it any better. I'd say you can't miss this show.
-
This show sold out in two weeks here in SF, although it's likely because Kasabian is getting all kinds of love from Live 105 (The local radio station). I think Slims might be smaller than the 9:30 too.
Looking forward to this show.
-
bump ...
i'm going this friday, looking forward to it, anyone else?
-
I will be there, need to see Kasabian. Cannot stop listening to Processed Beats, Reason is Treason, and L.S.F. Actually, I love the whole album and that happens very rarely these days.
-
I'll be there. Rockin' right at the very front.
-
It just occured to me that after seeing both of your names back to back on a thread, that I have been thinking that Arthwys and Arlette were the same person.
-
ahh, alas i am not going
i have decided to buy chinchillas instead.
-
Chinchillas rock almost as much as this concert will! :D
-
I'm just excited to see the Omnichord used in a live setting!

Then be sure to be at the De Novo Dahl show tonight, the hot chick in the sextet plays one also. Unfortunately she is taken and married to the lead singer.

When all else fails, play the sex card :p
-
This seems like a show that you don't have to think too hard to enjoy. Therefore, I'm on.

I'm there.

A melding of Stone Roses, Led Zep, and Janes? Sounds like it has promise. I was already planning on going based on a friend's recommendation to see Kasabian.
But what the f**k is up with the chinchillas? Are they the hamsters for the new millenium? Lube up!!

If you want to stream the whole album, go here:

Not being from DC or the immediate area, how far is DC9 from the 9:30?

about a block and a half, if that much
-
Depends on how much you have to drink; feels like two miles drunk; about 1/2 block sober...see you there. ;)
-
Or, in after the show language, it's about a stumble, trip and fall from the 9:30's front door.
-
a really great pairing of bands and a fun show. i think i'm more in the kasabian than the music camp though. as were a lot of the crowd. at least half the crowd left at some point during the music's set well before they had even started the encore. it looked at least 85% full during the kasabian set. the lead singer's vocals for the music were off the entire set-it sounded like i was listening to him from another room. like when you stand in the hallway at the club and listen to the band-distant and muffled.
did all the british university students that are studying in the dc area right now go to the show? they were everywhere!
thatguy was working tonight-bandaged up hand and all, but looking his regular chipper self!
-
I agree that Kasabian put on a better performance. They really impressed me. The Music seemed to be off a bit. I saw them when they opened for The Vines about a year or so ago, and they were much better.
-
Kasabian was fantastic. Best set Ive seen in awhile...I was so so on the album, but the live performance just blew me away. Ill be very interested to see if they hit it big.
As for the Music....
I saw tem a while back when they opened up for the Vines and they absolutely blew me away. Dont get me wrong, it was still a good show, but just not mindblowing like the previous one I saw. As I see it, there were 3 problems.
#1 - The microphone and the overall speaker system was waaay too low. As soon as they started playing, I could tell something was wrong. When I saw them before his voice took over and filled the room. THis time you could barely hear him. Kasabian had the volume a lot higher and it really helped their show.
#2 - Inexplicably (or maybe someone can enlighten me) but Rob Harvey wasnt hitting the high notes he normally does. The previous show he would hit the high notes on Getaway and others and he didnt here. No clue why, but it took away from the show.
#3 - Kasabian were unbelievable. An absolutely incredible set. Lead singer is like a Mick Jagger/Liam Gallagher in the making. Measuring up to them proved to be incredibly difficult last night.
I brought a bunch of friends who were blown away by Kasabian and just so-so on The Music. All in all, still a great rock show. The Music at 80% are still better than most of the bands out there....But they were really outshined by Kasabian. They had a memorable set.
-
kasabian was very good, incredibly loose for a first-album show ... i was expecting just the album cuts and they went off on a lot of loose psychedelic jams, very spacey ... the bassist looked like he was about to puke on himself the entire show ...
kasabian's lead singer reminded me of a poor man's Howlin' Pete Almqvist ... tried to get the same kind of fey, Mick Jagger-esque shit going on, but he didn't quite know what he was doing up there ...
very good set though, i was impressed ...
i hadn't heard the music before, and i really liked them ... kind of a janes addiction / zeppelin mixture, some heavy stuff, some poppy stuff, i thought they had a really good range of music ... definitely got repetitive towards the end of the set, and a LOT of people left, i'd say more than half of the crowd was gone by 12:15am or so ...
afterparty at DC 9 was fun, typical liberation dance party stuff, just with kasabian schwag all over the place ...
-
oh, the biggest negative the entire night were the fucking strobe lights, especially during kasabian's set ... i had to literally look away from the stage for a few of their songs, it was horrible ...
930 staph ... was this just a mistake on their part, or were they intentionally trying to blind the entire crowd?
-
Just checked The Music's forum and found that the lead singer was extremely sick. Makes sense...
Hope people give them a 2nd chance...

The music selection between sets was great. My buddies and I had a fine time playing 'what/who is this'. Since much of it is brand new, we had to wing it a lot and I can see that some of our guesses were on the money quite often. Good times.

Thanks for the list ravedubin. As the kids say, "kewl!".

Nice setlist, Ravedubin. A special thx for the New Pornographers cut.
Yeah - I have to admit liking Kasabian alot more than The Music...but I'll give them another chance since the singer was ill. He definitely sounds like Perry and I see the Stone Roses influence...but I don't get why everyone says there's a Led Zep influence. Maybe someone can educate me.

his voice, at times, sounded like robert plant's and they had some songs that had a blues/metal edge to them that just sounded a bit like zep
but this was my first time hearing them, and i had heard the comparison before-hand, so i'm sure that colored my judgement

I ran info them while coming after watching the advance screening of Constantine and after the show. I was at The Music/Kasabian show, and it was a great time. Both bands put on a great show.
-
Good show. Kasabian was the best by far. That first band was not good at all.
-
Did anyone else think that the Music looked like a bunch of high schoolers? Robert Harvey desperately needs a haircut, and the bass player looked like a 17 year old metalhead with his shaved head and gold chain. I really found it amusing for some reason.
Other than that, I was bored with their set about half way through, and I had really liked them with the Vines. Just didn't do much for me Friday night.
-

Totally agree.
The first band was awful. Probably one of the worst bands I've ever seen at the Club, if not the worst. That lead singer was......well, I was embarrassed for her.
Kasabian were wonderful but they need to tone down the light show. They were a bit (a lot) distracting.
-
Sadly, yes I must admit that The Music's set that night was just not what it could've been. That being said, I still love them, the albums are good, especially the 2nd one. I could tell they weren't quite clicking together. There was evena moment during one of the songs (i forget which) when Phil was desperately trying to pick up the pace and hoping the rest would follow his lead. Which did not happen, so for a few measures they were totally out of sync. Which isn't like them. As for them looking like a bunch of high schoolers, it's cuz they're barely past that. I think the oldest of them is 22 years old. The chain struck me as a simple concession to having made a good deal of money on the first album, some small piece of bling that he fancied. I've met them all and they seem pretty chill down to earth people.
I expected good things from Kasabian, but was totally blown away! I think the light show could've been toned down a little, but not by much! I thought the multitoned yellowish ones were great, but too much strobe. As for the music and the performance of it itself. Oh my lord it was great. The lead singer had major presence and the songs were tight. It all came off as being effortless, and I couldn't help but thinking "these guys are really rockstars. Overall good night.
Morningwood was simply mildy amusing. They would work much better in an extremely small dirty club in downtown NY or London.
-
Not to poop on anyone's parade but after streaming most of Kasabian album it would get a 5.5 on the Kos-mo-meter. I see it getting up to around a 6.0, but right now it falls in that category of a good listen but nothing to get overly excited about. Razorlight and Snow Patrol fall in the same range.
Would I DJ a track or two? Yes its got that appeal.
Would I see them live? Yes if they were paired with another band worth seeing.
My crack team of Editors and Writers are currently finalizing the Kos-mo-meter system. Ok Pirates are doing the actual work. Which is why it will take longer then expected, as they always get distracted.
<warning snarky comments ahead>
For maximum enjoyment of the Kasabian album, take it out of the CD changer and replace it with Primal Scream "Vanishing Point" and "XTRMNTR", New Order "Get Ready", David Holmes "This Film's Crap, Lets Slash the Seat" and any compliation with Big Audio Dynamite and Pop Will Eat Itself on it.
<warning even snarkier comment>
Didn't Arkarna already release this album?
What bugs me most about the album, is it's like a major label sampler where you start identifying which "new" artist was signed because they resemble another labels "hit" maker. Each track is such a homage to another specific other bands sound. I'm all for groups that wear influences on thier sleeves, but mix them up a bit, just not channel them one at a time.
-
oooooh, I like Arkarna!!! thats a kick ass EP thingie they got out.....mmmmmm, 1998!!!
-
Indeed "The Future Is Overrated"

I think this is spot on to what I was thinking. All of the songs sound good and go down easily, but they remind me a lot of other bands and so it's hard to know what Kasabian really *sounds* like. And seeing them live explains why the Brits (well, the NME) are so crazy for them -- the two main guys look just like Liam Gallagher. The singer has the Definitely Maybe cleancut look and the guitar player is more post-Morning Glory shaggy.
