What ya think?
-
My guess, based on zero factual information, is no. I think since it's in the "soft sale" period the public knowlege of the show is low. I belive Artic Monkeys were in soft sale for 3 weeks before selling out and they're on everyone's radar at the moment.
I want to buy tickets tomorrow so I hope my instincts are correct. I also hope tickets are not more than $25.
-
Weren't tickets on sale for a few weeks the last time they played? I don't recall it selling out until shortly before the show date.
-
Why not consult the magic 8 ball oracle (http://www.indra.com/8ball/front.html)?
the 8 ball knows all

long before they announced the dates, i heard a rumour. right about the time sonic youth agreed to play bonnaboob again, the flaming lips were hinted at be openers for some of the tour to support sonic's new album. now i know the flaming lips are opening for an eclectic number of acts this summer, and so far the lips's schedule is open for the sonic date at nine thirty . . . . anybody else hear anything like this, or am i just creaming my jeans too early??

Yes, they are doing some shows together, but I don't believe tickets would go on sale for the co-headlining tour without mention that it's also a Flaming Lips show.
Also, I thought those reports said August tour.
-
if i remember correctly, the sonic youth show a few years ago at 930 didn't sell out until about a week before the show. so i think you'll be ok. as for the flaming rips rumor, look to the magic 8 ball..
-
I'd love to go to this show, but I'll be driving down to Bonnaroo that day. Guess I'll just have to wait an extra day to get my SY fill...
-
oh well . . . sonic's opener for the nine thirty is some band called "be your own pet." great, another show where i can get there half and hour before the main act goes on, buy a beer, look at overpriced merch, and establish myself near the bar. hooray.

they were only $25, but charges on two tickets were like $11...and that doesn't even include shipping...so you're really paying for...well, i won't get into it right now. you all already know that i'm pissed.

will you be checking out the oysterhead reunion? i'm very upset i won't be a witness to that.
-
I think I'm going to wait 'till I'm down there for a show near the end of the month....if I can by them at the box office great, if not, oh well (I saw them in 2002, and....they were good and all but I was just really underwhelmed)
-
my favorite sonic show at nine thirty was when they released "a thousand leaves" and only played songs from that album. so many people felt ripped, as if they should be allowed to control what artists do.

This will be my first time seeing them so I'd like to hear the back cataloge, but if Rather Ripped is a good album and they played a set heavy with those tunes I wouldn't be too upset.

word is SY is looking for a DC opener. i'm curious to see how that turns out. BYOP doesn't sound too promising...
Calling the Nashville-based band Be Your Own Pet "sophomoric" isn't actually an insult--these punk rockin', expletive-spewing kid wonders just graduated from their sophomore year of high school, and no member of BYOP is over 17. Bleach-blond lead singer Jemina Pearl will have to fend off the Debbie Harry comparisons with a stick; and guitarist Jonas Stein bashes out the chords like he's amping a crowd at CBGBs circa 1977. With lyrics like "You've got me on a leash / A damn damn leash / And it's hard enough to be myself," look for BYOP to kick-start the new angry teen's rallying cry.
The quartet met at the Nashville School of the Arts. In addition to Abegg, the band members include drummer Jamin Orrall, guitarist Jonas Stein and bassist Nathan Vasquez. As Nashville is a music town, it's not surprising that all four band members have impressive musical pedigrees. Stein's father is Burt Stein, who manages the careers of Ronnie Millsap, Nanci Griffith, and Vince Neil. Vasquez's father is guitarist Raphael Vasquez. Orrall's father is singer-songwriter Robert Ellis Orrall. Jemina Pearl's father is famed rock photographer Jimmy Abegg. The Damn Damn Leash single was released in March.

just found out the opener is tall firs, who just played my house on the 14th with my band and little howlin' wolf. they're a new signing to ecstatic peace and have that will oldham/anomoanon/byrds sound...dark, jangly, drony folk/psych/rock. nothing mindblowing, but really solid.
-
Sorry, but that show for 1,000 Leaves DID suck. It's not a strong album, and when you play basically the whole thing and then one "oldie", it's bound to set people up for disappointment. My favorite Sonic Youth show was when I saw them in Rome. THey did a bunch of stuff from Murray Street, which IS a good album (and I didn't even know the songs), plus stuff like "Candle", "Bull in the Heather", and "Silver Rocket".

what? 1,000 Leaves kicks face. sorry.

The Philly show is sold out. I don't know how long it's been on sale, nor how many people the Starlight Ballroom holds.

Depends of who else is playing then. It's not really that high up on my priority list.
-
Kudos to the band for charging only $25 for their tour. I think they couold command more. Also, I'm much more likely to see them at 9:30 rather than the Nation, which they played several years ago...
-
a hell of a sonick tooth show was when they opened for wilco at dar. dar rules. yeah baby.

Are you being facetious?
I think that was my least favorite SY show as well as my least favorite Wilco show.

yeah, you're right. i was trying to get someone edged up on the fact that i like dar so much. (nothing like going to a concert where everyone sits there and stares at each other). my all time fav sonic show was at the second bonnaboob. it was the first time i saw the new guy, and i was blown the f away. the same bonnaboob that i saw the flaming lips, which left my skull scraped upon the eyes i was peeling, as guys on motorcylces rode inside a giant, metal ball.
-
That might be the best way to describe it. Not sure if I'll see them this time around.
Also, GGW's right on the money about that Constitution Hall show. What a terrible venue.

this will be my first Sonic Youth show :D . i missed 'em every other time they played here, and was really upset. this one is the day after my last exams, and i'm really happy that i finally get to go see them!

arrrrrg! The show is sold out now, isn't it? Be Your Own Pet is THE BEST!!!! + Sonic Youth!!!! that would be the most amazing thing ever...Shit.
If anyone going, has an extra ticket, unable to give away, I'm your woman ;)
-
Fuck sold out already? I was still debating between SY and the Juan Maclean on a boat in NYC the same night. Guess this makes my debate easier.
-
That's odd...I was just able to buy 4 tickets.

Thank you so much :D

Well Sonic Youth "sold out" yesterday when they appeared on Gilmore Girls :D It was Thurston, Kim and daughter Coco doing some song snippet together. Joining them in the big sellout was Joe Pernice, Yo La Tengo, Sparks, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Sam Phillips.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I'm so glad I played tennis and taped the show and could just forward to the band appearances. What I saw of the show looked absolutely horrible.

Was going to defend the Gilmore Girls as a fun show however it wouldn't change the minds of the haters, except to state that any episode involving the character Lane and her band especially Sebstaine Bach are fun. a ex-member of BJM made an appearence this year on the show.

No way man, Gilmore Girls is a good show. Seriously.

Rory got put in her place by Logan's dad last night, that was a real immature move by her to corner him and accuse him in the elevator ...
I mean, uhh, how about that baseball play last night?? crazy!

I went to high school with Lauren Graham.

So do you think next years season will be the same without the series creators on board?
This always happens to me when I leave that Mac unattended and the cat starts using it. Whats actually on my mind at the moment is the tension between Richard and Linda Thompson on "Shoot Out The Lights", I can see why this was always showing up best albums lists in the 90s..
-
I have heard that next season will be the last.

you mean '80s. yes, it is a near-perfect album. check out I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight if you haven't done so yet. Pour Down Like Silver is also a masterpiece.
-
I was thinking of those Rolling Stones best of lists... which maybe have been in the 80s but i'm getting old so excuse the confusion :p will checkout the other releases

Well nothing is definite, but the actor's contracts all expire after next season and without the creators on board i suspect many will jump ship
-
anton newcombe has been booked on gg next season.
