Title: X[insert name here]X
Post by: twelsh737 on February 04, 2005, 05:08:00 pm
So are all the new names on this board with this format some sort of flashback to the straight-edge thing? Is everything old new again? Will bands stop having "b-sides" and only release "double-A-sides" like Two-Tone did back in the day?

While I agree with your thought about work I was just saying that I noticed a lot of new members with screen names that were something like-
 ximcoolx
 or
 xiliveinrichmondx

and I took the two "X"s to be some reference to the straight edge movement. The last time I saw so many "X"s in screen names was the last time I thought that straight edge thing was really big -like 95 or so when Earth Crisis still existed

as opposed to, say, wrapping one's name in t's?

Exactly- the "t"s stand for troubled- thus showing my connection to shoe-gazing, jim beam, and awkward pauses.  ;)

straight edge is the punks who don't drink, don't smoke, don't do drugs, are vegan... there are differing degrees of sXe, but some believed it also includes no sex, etc.  some people took it pretty seriously.  it was big in the late 80's, and many people tattooed straight edge stuff to themselves (XXX or sXe or the like).  i actually have several sXe friends today, but the movement has gotten quieter.

in some cities, the straight edge kids were somewhat, well, violent about it, and there were times when the sXe crowd would beat people up for smoking or drinking-- as happened in detroit from time to time.  most sXe folks will tell you that violence isn't okay, though.

I don't ever recall veganism being a tenet of the straight edge movement.

While the Minor Threat song "Salad Days" may lead one to believe so, the Teen Idles hit "I Drink Milk" would contradict.

The fact that Ian used to scoop ice cream at Haagen Das down in Georgetown might also contradict this.

I think the veganism aspect came later.

Well I know it is discussed in Our Band Could Be Your Life that they had a hard time finding suitable food while on tour.  I dont know if they were just Vegetarians or Vegans, or if it was the Minor Threat or Fugazi chapter.

straight edge is like religion in that some people were more "orthodox" than others

some were vegan, i knew some of those, others smoked but just didnt drink or do drugs.
it was really a matter of HOW straight edged you were.

the only REAL qualification that i saw was that you couldnt do drugs and drink...

Not joking -- I've been here since 1990, but have never heard that term.  I know about the whole Fugazi/McKaye 'credo,' but didn't know it was a whole movement with the XXXs and all.  Kinda...annoying, really.  I have two copies of "Our Band Could Be Your Life" -- think I should get to reading one.

i thought you were forced to listen to "straightedge" by minor threat when you crossed over from virginia ... by the way, has anyone noticed how much minor threat completely blows?  i'd heard their stuff here and there, then i bought their complete discography for 8 bucks or something, and i was really disapointed ...

sure, the band meant much more than their recorded product, but taken separately, it fucking blows.

Now hang on a minute.....if "straight edge" punks    don't do anything bad for you, then they obviously have opinions about stuff and are judgemental, so that would contradict the whole punk movement. What happened to punks being "we're so vacant, oh so pretty vacant, and WE DON'T CARE!"? Fucking straight edge wankers if you ask me. (written by someone old enough to be around when punks first hit the scene in the 70's)

This shit reminds me of the skinhead movement a bit....what are those skinheads called that are against racism and all that stuff? Well, coming from an original skinhead...Skinheads were never racist, in fact, half of our gang were black! It was all about ska music. I think racism came into the skinhead movement as part of the football hooliganism, so the racist twats began to dress like skinheads because they looked menacing. America, as usual, gets the whole thing wrong and now associates "skinheads" with the KKK and all that stuff, so non-racist kids who are into ska music have to distance themselves from the racist pigs by coming up with some new name, when in reality, they are the ones continuing the true skinhead movement.
