Title: New Year's Eve shows
Post by: bearman🐻 on October 24, 2007, 11:31:00 am
Any cool New Year's Eve shows that anyone knows about? I'm going to be in Calfornia, trying to decide what to check out, but I'd be curious to see what kind of concerts are happening in other places that night. I'll start:

 X
 The Majestic Ventura Theater
 Ventura, CA

 Reverend Horton Heat/Nashville Pussy
 House of Blues
 San Diego, CA

The only one I've seen thus far for SF is:

 The Mars Volta
 Bill Graham Civic Auditorium
 San Francisco, CA

At this point I'm very tempted to stay in So Cal for X or The Rev.

And I believe Hank III is on this bill too.  He's on the SF Bill days earlier.

Do you live in the DC area now? Or an area where the Reverend Horton Heat/Hank III/Nashville Pussy is playing in the next month?  If so I would catch that show locally and then see X for NYE.

I live in DC...I'm tempted to do the Rev here and then X in Ventura. That would be ideal in my book! Too bad Social D and the Germs aren't doing New Year's shows. Social D will be doing West Hollywood, but I'll be in San Diego, not sure if I can make it up there just for a night.

How long will you be in San Diego?  I'll be at one of the Social D shows in Anaheim (21-23) before Xmas.

Well Ventura is another hour or so north of Hollywood, so instead of making it a 3+ hour haul from SD on the 31st why not go to Hollywood on the 30th for Social D and then up to Ventura on the 31st for X?

I also have a feeling that Social D will be on the bill for one of those now all night mass LA concerts on New Years (like a weenie roast or Acoustic Xmas).  They have not been announced yet, but there was one at the Long Beach Arena in the last few years and one on the Universal Lot too, I think.

I saw that rumor on a DBT fan site awhile back, but there are multiple cities they are rumored to be playing that night, like Birmingham.

I saw this X show listed on the band's website and was really intrigued....it's a shame there are no good shows in this area for New Years....really lame ass for years,to be honest....I remember when I lived in SF in the early 90's and got to see a really great New Years show...Primus,Pixies & Janes Addiction.....it was an EVENT and one hell of a good time!!.....That being said,if I'm not at a BCS Bowl game on New Years in one of 3 or 4 different cities,I may try to get out to LA for the X show.....I'm gonna ask John Doe about it when I see him at Java next month....

I'll be in Salt Lake City, Utah for New Years.  I'm not holding my breath for a show there around then...especially because it would have to be appropriate for my 13 and 14 year old nieces, as well.

No.

That would be the New years  DAY thread.

Besides, do you really have to rub it in?
I mean Jesus, they have 26 shows between the Anaheim and W Hollywood HOB's in the next two months, and none east of the rockies.    :(

You know, I have no idea what we're doing for New Years (I can barely remember where I have to be for Thanksgiving).  But as soon as we figure it out, I'll let you know.  I'd love to catch that show with you.

For those of you that hate NYE, and live in the DC area, might I suggest something different:

Monty Python and Holy Grail at the AFI on NYE.

I'm tempted to see Chuck Brown at the 930, but I think Monty Python would be damn fun.

Thanks. I forgot about that R&R show. That could be fun. Getting a cab home might not...

I like the Reef, but I tend to stay away from 18th St on the weekends because I hate the crowd, and so I can't imagine what it's like on NYE.

when i went to the reef on NYE in the past it was very chill, they made sure they didn't pack the house too full and the liquor was really flowing ... you don't really have to deal with the crowds when you stay at one place from 10pm --> 3am

Smackette's leaning towards coming back to SF for New Years, but let me work her a little bit.  SxDx are also cancelling a bunch of shows due to illness so it might be the only area show while we're home - that might help (and the SF shows are sold out).

we're thinking about heading up to NYC, but if i was going to stay here, i'd probably end up at the rock & roll hotel:

whatever you do, stay away from those shitty big hotel parties ... bars usually announce a lot of fun, smaller parties closer to the 31st ... the reef has been a lot of fun in the past [/b]
We're giving away a pair of $80 VIP passes on BYT this week and next.

Was a lot of fun last year and sold out.

agreed, i'm debating about going up to NYC for something similar (rented out a warehouse, BYOB, good DJs, etc) or sticking around here

also in NYC

The Virgins are playing a late night new years show (i think like 2am?) with A.R.E. Weapons, at Mercury Lounge.
I vowed to stay in DC for new years, but that looks soooo tempting...

were you able to find anything about the legality of the party?  warehouses are always sketchy places for shows like this - can be totally hit or miss as far as whether it is legit.  they seem split on the buzz board.

Yeah. I debated starting a new thread about the closure of this space in general, but I didnt think enough people had been there/cared.

For Vansmack, Thatguy, and anyone else interested: I just got back from California, and had to say that my first show of 2008 is probably going to be in the top 10, if not the best of the year. Social D @ House of Blues in Anaheim. Jeez, what a killer show. They came out to do 3 songs acoustic: "Cold Feelings", "Ball and Chain" and "Story of My Life". That could have been the encore. The audience was going NUTS. Then they strapped on the electric guitars and did stuff like "King of Fools", "6 More Miles", "99 to Life", "Sick Boys", "Down On The World", and 2 new tunes..."Alone and Forsaken" and "You Can't Take It With You". They also did the usual stuff like "Mommy's Little Monster", "Ring of Fire" and "Prison Bound", but they also did "1945" and "Far Behind". For all you Social D fans that have never seen them in Southern California, it really is a pretty special experience. I'm dying to make it back to another show out there...friggin' incredible.
