Title: Morrissey
Post by: xneverwherex on October 29, 2007, 01:46:00 am
Well not that most of you will care (although around here you never know  :)  ) but Kristeen Young got fired from being Morrissey's opener. He now is opening with Girlfriend in a Coma. Theyre quite a bit better than KY anyway. Apparently at her Tuesday night show that I was at, she made some offhanded comments that deeply offended him.

Anyway - Im seriously considering finding a ticket for Halloween. Tonights show and Saturday nights show were beyond brilliant. Morrissey is in top form that no one will want to miss. Highlights were "tomorrow", "interesting drug", "girlfriend in a coma", and so many more. Security is as tight as ever, so if youre planning on getting onstage - good luck!  :)

I heard she said "Morrissey likes to give oral...I mean, cunnilingus."

This is what I hate about Morrissey.  He's such a precious, pissy queen.  He's like a sexually defunct Axl Rose.  Big deal!  So his opening act busted his balls!  Morrissey is just as sad a pathetic as the Stones, Dylan, Springsteen, Smashing Pumpkins, The Police, etc. touring on past glories and fans who are so socially inept and devoted that they don't know the difference.  He can retire for all I care.  His last great album was what, fifteen years ago (Vauxhall and I)?   Let him retire to Italy like a greying Norma Desmond and have him tend to his Gladiolus.  I actually like Kristeen Young a lot more after this.  What do I suggest you "take" for the DAR show?  A good book.

hey.   The Halloween show is not sold out. so you dont have to "find a ticket" cause you can just buy one,  but i would bet if you scour craigslist you can find one for cheep cheep.

and we're more than prepared for the stage jumpers  :)

I am a little put out by this comment. I'm socially adept (honest!). Also, has Morrissey been spotted with any gladioli in 20 years? Lazy . . .predictable . . .

I like all Morrissey's albums, although some more than others. Am I so devoted that I don't know the difference? I don't think so.

For example, Maladjusted is by no means a classic album, but Trouble Loves Me is one of my favorite songs.

In any case, Kristeen Young was absolutely unlistenable . . .good riddance as far as I am concerned.

I take offense to this comment. You're no longer talking about music but implying that you hate Morrissey because of whatever his sexuality may or may not be. And that doesn't sit well with me AT ALL. Don't let your ignorance stray beyond your taste (or lack of) in music. Antagonize and provide an unbalanced opinion if you must, but don't make personal attacks in a homophobic way.

if you hate everything we talk about - why the fuck do you bother to keep on posting. i am really offended with your bullshit. what do you care about what us fans like. i will say one thing - i met some of the nicest, friendliest people at the shows that i saw. we all had a good head on our shoulders. i met a woman from sweden who has seen about 15 of his shows in europe and over here on this tour. she  had a room next to morrissey at one of his hotels. and before you go on about how obsessive she is - shes married with a daughter, and they are vacationing in nyc around his tour. her daughter she felt was too young to be standing in the front with her - so she was seeing the lion king. she also bought morrissey chocolates which he thanked her for.

my point is - the fans care about him - and we dont give a shit if he's bi, asexual or whatever he is or isnt. his music changed my life in high school (i dont even wanna hear your bullshit remarks on it - i just dont care). i meet complete strangers who look out for you at a show when youre likely to be stampeded. i saw people collapsing right and left because of the insanity and we all stood together and helped. dont get me wrong - i dont think only morrissey fans do that - but i do think we have a strong allegiance.

and you should just f'ing leave. and last i checked i was far from socially inept - as im sure most of the other fans are. perhaps you really need to listen to him - as i think youre the one who is really socially inept. maybe you can learn something. lets start with the below.

'its so easy to laugh, its so easy to hate, it takes strength to be gentle and kind' (end of rant)

and hoya (or whoever posted) thanks for the heads up on the morrissey tix. ill see if its possible that i could get down there in time.

any word on 'there is a light...'?? he was playing it at the beginning of his tour - but no more  :(

I vote that from here on out we just ignore Brian Wallace. Don't acknowledge his posts, don't add fuel to his little fire. Just pretend he's not here. Eventually he'll go away. He doesn't have the guts to reply to my post, so it just goes to show what a pussy he really is. And I don't have the time for idiots like him.

Let's get back to Morrissey. I will be there Friday, cannot wait. With all of the b.s. going on in my life (insane stuff at work, mom in the hospital, etc.) it will be great to see a show I'm genuinely excited about.

It's not something worth replying to, "Bear Man."  What I said was not homophobic.  I can't really be bothered with you feigning outrage over something that doesn't exist.  You're just looking to start conflict.  I simply stated that this is another instance of Morrissey acting like a five year-old brat who doesn't get his way.

if you can, get there early to be up front and make sure to give morrissey a big hug from me  :)  i think morrissey can always put a smile on my face, no matter my state of mind.

Well, there are seats but that has never stopped me from moving up at DAR. The coolest Morrissey show I ever saw was when I was in Key West on vacation in 1997. He played at the San Carlos Institute on Duval Street, which was unbelievably tiny. I don't think there were even 200 people there. It was probably like 150. He did a bunch of stuff from "Vauxhaul and I" and about 12 people stormed the stage at the very end during "Shoplifters of the World Unite". I couldn't believe that I was there to see that.

I have thought this for a while.  It seems weird that Brian is a teenager, in love with MCR and Fall Out Boy, despises all of us old nostalgic people, yet, everyone once in a while spouts off some really fucking random brit-pop knowledge that would really only seem to be known by someone who lived through that time.

wasnt he the one who thinks Radiohead is a complete waste of time, yet seemed to know obscure facts about Blur album titles?

   that doesnt add up....

I'm pretty sure Brian is a poster from the HFStival board, that has since died a slow death because of too many people just like him on the board.  His last post over there roughly coinicides with his increased posts over here.

I seem to recall that during the HFStival/9:30 Board "West Side Story Re-enactment" there was a poster called "HFStival" and signed his posts "Brian" - my money is on that being the same guy.

i was pondering that at last nights show. I mean, Im sure they thought they were prepared, but people were flying in every which direction. before the show, people had planned at which point theyd get on the stage at the encore. there was a huge line of people that were determined to get on the stage. and that was only one tiny section of people. it multiplied by at least 20x. It was pure insanity. Morrissey has tight security - and Arturo does a damn good job of throwing people aside.

Id imagine it would be a pain to be security that night - Im sure thatguy would back it up.

and bearman - as always another great story. id have loved to see moz in that small of a venue   :)

i was thinking tho - i dont know how julia puts up with it each night as she was in the front where all the chaos was. guess shes used to it.

and all of the setlists can be found here http://www.morrissey-solo.com/ (http://www.morrissey-solo.com/)

yeah, unfortunately, Rams Head has a few gaping holes stagefront (which i will not tell about publicly) and we are notoriously short-staffed there.

Actually, I may head down to the Baltimore show.  Only if he does "Paint a Vulgar Picture."  A costume is required, no?  Maybe I'll go as a "9:30 Message Board Hipster."  What will I need?  Let's see...:

 Thick-rimmed glasses.
Well-worn band t-shirt of a band you never listen to and couldn't pick out of a line-up.
 Ironic girlfriend.
 Vintage sneakers.
 Distressed Army jacket.
A willingness to discuss how Radiohead are the MC5 of the "aughts."
 Bad posture/unathletic ability.
 General sense of malaise.

You guys give me more credit than I'm due.

I've got a new daughter at home, a crashed hard drive at home, and increasingly more work here at my job that's making it difficult keeping up even one 9:30 board persona.

I haven't "gotten into it" with Brian because he hasn't really said anything that offended me. And half the time he's actually right on for poking fun of some people who take themselves and their music tastes and interests way too seriously.

I've been thinking for a while that Brian Walalce is a troll and everyone is just feeding into him. This can't possibly be a real person. Like sonick said, it simply doesn't add up. For example:

Exactly!

Personally, I disagree with about 98% of what Brian says but respect his right to have his own opinion and I love reading his posts very much in the same way that I sometimes enjoy reading the NME. I often don't agree with them but love their very Northern English sense of humor. It's the comedy angle I love. Sometimes it's the wit itself and other times it's his absurd thinking that has me laughing. Bet Mankie knows what I mean. Then again, sometimes I'm just appreciating a good jab to a board that needs a nice sharp pin in it's bloated ego, collectively speaking.

Smackie, funny you mention Flawd as I too was thinking they both have a lot in common. I too miss Flawd.

It is amazing how much Brian seems to know about older music. Makes me wonder about some things like if he's just pissed off that he missed out on so much good music.    :p

I'm still not convinced that Walrus isn't a Rhett alter-ego. Since he got married Rhett's really mellowed, but maybe the Rhett of old just needs to get out sometimes. I miss the old Rhett and how he used to piss most people off on a daily basis (remember the 'made my own t-shirt' thread? Still one of my faves). This board has really become a bored in recent months so at least Walrus adds a little spice, even if he is full of shit....again, not unlike the old Rhett!  ;)

 BTW, what's an "ironic girlfriend"?

We're giving away tickets to the show on our site.  Usually only 5 people even try to get the free tickets we always offer so your chances are pretty good:

After years of watching Scooby Doo, I know only too well not to fuck with the skinny shaggy haired guy!!!!

If any Moz fan does 'bring it on' though, just keep a 1/2lb rib eye in your back pocket to wave at them and that should take care of the problem

my thoughts exactly. i was so sick at the saturday show - had the flu or something - so just came into catch his set. the next night - was/am still sick but still camped out early so i could be right up front. i felt better the entire time when he was playing. the after effects have not been good, and just remember - youll sleep when youre dead.

Nice article on Post.com about this:

 November Spawned a Mozzer

Last week, as I was sifting through the hundreds of e-mails that greeted me upon my return from a week of vacation, I found one that especially caught my eye: "$35 Tickets Released for Morrissey at DAR Constitution Hall!" A year or so ago I would have thought nothing of it. "Still way too much," probably would have been my reaction. And that's not just a slight to Morrissey -- there are very few acts out there that I would consider paying $35 to see. (Update: Forget $35! An e-mail just landed in my inbox saying that $20 tickets to Friday's show will go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m.) But that all changed a few months ago on a beautiful summer night at Wolf Trap.

I like Brit-pop heroes the Smiths just fine, even if I don't understand the crazed devotion that the band still inspires to this day. (Chalk it up to dreaded '80s production that makes much of what was released that decade borderline unlistenable to me.) That crazed devotion transferred to Morrissey's solo career, where his legions now see him as a major deity. And while I can't say I'm a full-fledged member of the Cult of the Moz, as I walked out of Wolf Trap that night all I could think to myself was: "Now I get it." Rarely have I been so moved by a show. Granted, expectations may have played a large role in this. The performance almost didn't happen since Morrissey was suffering from vocal problems; the previous four shows had been canceled and the following three ended up not happening, either. But Morrissey hardly seemed under the weather that Monday night. As I wrote in my review of the show: "The pompadoured Pope of Mope's dramatic croon wasn't flawless, but it was close enough. There were a few times when he did seem to be laboring, clutching at his chest with an almost pained look on his face. But then again maybe he was just, you know, being Morrissey."

Lots of performers try to cultivate some sort of magnetism while up on stage, but for Morrissey it just comes naturally. To his legions this goes without saying, but I was a skeptic until I witnessed it in person. You really can't take your eyes off him when he's up there singing like only he can, using the microphone chord as a lasso, accepting gifts from audience members, etc. Wolf Trap is almost exclusively a calm and serene setting for a show, but Morrissey was able to inspire small pockets of mayhem just by his presence. And it should also be noted that on a purely musical level, the show was remarkable. The Moz's current five-piece backing band packs quite a punch, so don't think you'll be hearing anything wispy. The harder sound is consistent with Morrissey's two most recent albums, "You Are the Quarry" and "Ringleader of the Tormentors," which provided plenty of highlights, in addition to some Smiths chestnuts and hits from his earlier solo albums.

In the days after the show I was hoping for a quick return. Four months is about as good as it gets. Friday night I won't be rushing the stage or tossing flowers on it, but I don't doubt my heart rate will kick into another gear when the Moz hits the stage. If you've always wanted to join a cult, but didn't want the usual living-on-a-ranch-in-a-secluded-part-of-the-country thing that goes along with it, Friday night might be exactly what you need.

I'm in too, even though with service charges it came to over $30 bucks. That's better than $35+ and $65+ they were charging for tickets. I've never seen Moz and everyone tells me how great he is in concert. For that price I'm willing to give it a go.

Great seats released at $64. Based on last night's show, I wouldn't buy at that price, but $19 (plus fees) is good.

I want to go to the box office tonight to buy at the 930 club to avoid the fees  :)  Or who is kind enough to do it?  heh

not a big Morrissey fan but he did put on a very good show, and the crowd was pretty crazy. cool though, and everyone knew every single word.

I did enjoy it, but Wolftrap was much better. I was just saying that I don't think it's worth $75. I got in free last night basically cause I paid $35 for the pair and sold 1 ticket at $30, then I found $10 on the sidewalk on the way to the parking garage  :)

Last night's show was so fucking good. I was only 4 feet away from Morrissey and I felt like I was near a holy man or something.

I remember being so fucking surprised when he did "Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before", "Jack The Ripper", "Tomorrow", and "Last of the Famous International Playboys."

I won't lie, I really really really wanted Suedehead and Still Ill or Panic. Maybe it would be worth the 19 bucks to go see him again in hopes of hearing those songs.

Anyway, I'm exhausted from last night. It was a beautifully intense show. And Thank you to xneverwherex for posting the setlist!

I was set on seeing Dan Deacon Friday but all this talk of Morrissey has gotten me interested in the DAR show.

I hate begging for tickets at shows but it has worked for me two or three times.  But those attempts were for much smaller shows.  Any advice on where to stand, what time relative to show time to try, negotiating, etc, etc?  Thanks.

it was more that a trip to Baltimore + ticket would have put me out about a hundred bucks plus I didn't really feel like a 6 hour round trip drive when I'm also going to the show tomorrow night. But I still wish I'd gone because you're right, it is morrissey.

I used to know this girl who saw the Smiths at the Smith Center at GWU back in 1986. I guess they only played a few songs and someone threw something and hit Morrissey. He stomped off and that was it, but she got to hang with Mike Joyce and Johnny Marr and got a ton of photos with them. I would imagine they would be filling the Patriot Center if they toured nowadays.

My friends and I swore to each other that we weren't going to spoil surprises for ourselves. I haven't gone to morrissey-solo in a long time because of the deal I made with myself and my friends. However, my one friend did cheat a little about a month ago and said something to me about "Stretch Out and Wait." It is a pretty obscure smiths song in terms that you have to know the albums in order to know that particular song. Anyway, there's a fun rush when he starts playing something totally out of nowhere or what seems out of nowhere haha.

I saw Moz back in September of 2004 and was hoping to hear "Tomorrow" but didn't, so you can imagine how loud I must've screamed when he started playing that one last night.

I had a feeling "Girlfriend in a Coma" might happen because he did play it at Wolftrap. (I stopped following the tour when it ended in the summer so I wouldn't ruin any thrills.)

The nice thing is that back in 2004, he did play "Everyday is like Sunday" so I did get my fix of that song. I just really was hoping to hear Suedehead and maybe one of the singles from his recent album, but really though, I was pretty damn happy with the set.

They'd probably fill something a little larger than the Patriot Center maybe. I met someone last night who was telling me about The Smiths playing Merriweather. Did that actually happen back in 85?

Julia is this woman who follows Morrissey around. He always talks to her from the stage. It's been rumored that she's his girlfriend, but I don't know quite honestly. All I do know is that she always gets really good seats for his shows and she goes to a lot of them. And like I said already, he talks to her from the stage. He usually says something quirky like "How am I sounding tonight Julia? Do you know what song I'm going to perform next?" It's quite cute.

girlfriend? it is rumoured that Kristeen Young might have been involved with him after her comment at last tuesday's show (which she got fired from the tour right after). my friends and i thought nothing of her comment on morrissey giving head but it definitely fueled speculation.

Julia runs truetoyou.net or something like that. forgot the site. she goes to all of his shows, and morrissey fans dont like her in general for all of her special attention - although i did meet her (and know others who did) and shes nice enough.

if you google julia and morrissey - you can read all you ever wanted (and then some). plus theres pics of her floating around as everyone gets so curious.

Julia isn't his girlfriend.  Just a fan who's been following him around forever.  She was at the 2004 show a few rows in front of us.

We'll be there tonight...I think in row O orchestra.

Morrissey Eyeing New Album, 2008 Tour
 Morrissey

 November 02, 2007, 8:20 AM PT

 Evie Nagy, N.Y.
As his marathon tour in support of the 2006 album "Ringleader of the Tormentors" winds down, Morrissey is already making plans for the future. The artist has two new releases in the works and will be back on the road early next year, according to his manager, Merck Mercuriadis.

Mercuriadis says Morrissey, who was last inked to Sanctuary, will sign a new record deal to be announced soon. A greatest hits collection with two new songs and a new studio record produced by Jerry Finn, who was behind the boards for 2004's "You Are the Quarry," are on tap for 2008.

And while Morrissey has tended to stay off the road for long periods, the upcoming break will last only a few months, given the high demand to see the man in person.
"He'll be back out in January," Mercuriadis says. "We'll take a short break and then start again in March."

Launched in mid-March 2006, the "Ringleader" tour was initially set to end in the United Kingdom the following December. But from the start, the routing philosophy was to "take it to the people instead of having the people come to us," according to Mercuriadis.

"He loves to play off the beaten track," Mercuriadis says. "Playing Merrillville, Ind., is at least as important to him as playing the major markets. It's also what allows him to continue going for 18 months. Everything is a fresh experience."

I had an absolute blast tonight. K8teebug, sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you. I met some really, really cool people tonight though and everyone was awesome. Great setlist, I really enjoyed hearing "Interesting Drug", "The Boy With the Thorn In His Side", "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself", "Tomorrow" and "How Soon Is Now?". Not to mention "Stretch Out and Wait" and "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want". Hope that you all had fun too!

Did Brian Walalce attend the show? Here's a review from morrissey-solo. Makes me think Brian was there:

Morrissey and the band do well wherever they are. But this place (and the people in it) did everything they could to ruin that. Everyone was INCREDIBLY uptight about the seats. I remember being in the pit at a show last year, and when Moz came on tons of people poured into the pit next to me. I didn't care. The more the merrier. But the concert-goers in the front here were flipping out when people tried to squeeze next to them. Granted, a lot of them were middle-aged and probably don't go to too many Moz shows (let alone GA ones), but come on. You don't need all that elbow room when there are some really desperate fans just behind you, who paid the same for tickets. That's the problem with seated shows: unlike GA, they really don't reward the more devoted fans, the ones who want a front space more. Security wanted everyone in their seat, and most of the people were only too happy to comply. D.C. is full of rigid and uptight people, I know, but you'd expect Moz fans to be a bit more...well, enthusiastic about Moz shows. Not so insensitive and stodgy.

Bearman, sorry I missed you too!

LOVED the show.  So much better than the 2004 show.  Also glad he played the tree songs I wanted to hear (Stop Me, Tomorrow, Boy with the Thorn in His Side).  Morrissey sounded awesome, the band was in top form, and the fans were super nice (aside from the 3 assholes who wouldn't stop talking in the beginning, but they left after 3 songs).

 Just a terrific, awesome show.

Radiohead and AC/DC don't have any compilations.  I was being sarcastic.  AC/DC has none.  And Morrissey (with a much shorter career) will have SIX.  Not to mention the half a dozen Smiths compilations.  He's got to be the artist with the most compilations in relation to the amount of studio albums he's released.  He must think his fans are stupid and desperate.

i was really surprised that DAR even allowed people to be standing in front of the stage for Moz, from the balcony it looked three people deep there..

i guess being selfish is an entitlement of being the biggest fan ever of such and such band

well Morrissey has no say over the Smiths compilations, and most of his compilations include b-sides, etc which wouldn't be called a greatest hit  release.

I only knew about three songs but really enjoyed the show. The most enjoyable part was watching people try to hug Moz. I think DAR needs thatguy.   :D

I was surprised at how unsold-out the show was. Aside from a couple of sections in the balcony it seemed to be pretty empty from where I was sitting.

When have I accused  you of being a troll? Trolls are quite charming in their own way and there's absolutely nothing remotely charming about you so I would never accuse you of being a Troll...

AC/DC and Radiohead 'greatest hits' albums would be singles, that's probably why they don't put them out...maybe they could do a joint one and make it an ep???

great show, of course. the bunch of empty seats didn't seem to bother moz, he seemed in fine spirits. nice setlist, very different from wolf trap back in july. i was down front about 6-7 rows back and man, there were some battles for those shirts that he threw into the crowd. not one, not two, but THREE shirt removals, hot damn. "interesting drug" and "tomorrow" were fantastic, but pretty much everything was. the stage invasions were very comical, power in numbers is the lesson, i suppose.

i'm surprised that more than 50% of the seats in the tiers were empty.  DAR is a reasonably small big venue but i need to be in the orchestra next time.  Moz looks like the celebrity chef Todd English from the tiers.
