As an American - whose country has gotten a lot of new age contrived sports added to the mix simply so we can also kick ass - I, too, love the Winter Olypics.

Who do you like in hockey? I see Canadians beating Russians for gold, Swedes over Czechs for bronze.

Well, apparently, I would be watching for a whole different reason but all of the ice skating events, excluding speed skating, are the only ones that I have any interest in whatsoever.

 I love good ice skating!

I like figure skating somewhat. At least the womens. I hope they don't screw Slutskya over again like in 2002. Kwan will manage to screw up again and Cohen chokes at every big event.

I was watching some European World championship the other week and I swear the Russians bribed the judges. Obviously, I can't prove it but I do fully believe so, especially considering so much has already been outed about that kind of stuff. They took the gold in every competition regardless of quaility. They clearly deserved it in the Mens. Christ, that guy totally embarrased all of the other skaters! What a pleasure to watch. However, in all of the other events, while they were good, they were not the best, in my opinion, nor in either of the commentators opinions. In fact, the commentators made no bones about continually saying how they did not agree with the judges' decisions. I was happy that the commentators agreed with me but not happy about the same old same old taking hold in any kind of big name organization.

The Winter Olympics are definitely my favorite. Pretty much every sport interests me. Normally I have a schedule to keep track of things, but this year I'm a little behind. The upsets and surprise wins are the best.

WTF!?

I think she has nice knees. Man, you are picky, picky, picky. She has great calves.

For what it's worth, she's probably wearing some kind of skater's tights or stockings. Also, she may very well have just been kneeling on the ice prior to the photo. Although that looks like an artificial teflon rink.

The US looks like garbage. I think the Czechs are the team that are getting talked up as gold medal contenders but will fall totally flat, not Sweeden. Finland medaling would be a shock. Should be fun to watch.

Nah, she looks like a young woman to me. She's attractive but I'm not into the hottness factor being a straight female. I just wouldn't mind seeing that in the mirror when I had to face up to one.

Katerina was attractive but I've seen plenty of other very attractive skaters. Some not so attractive too. In the end, I go for the skating regardless of looks, nationality or anything else. It's a truly beautiful art form that I really appreciate.

Tara Lapinsky (sp?) was the one skater who really bugged me due to her placement. Don't get me wrong, I think she was extremely good but she completely lacked the grace of skaters just a few years older. Too much of her skating looked like she was running and lacked the feminine angularity and gracefullness that tops off a beautiful performance. I haven't seen her skate for a couple years now so I bet she's developed that with a tiny bit of maturing and even more practice.

But she's 5'2" tall. I've certainly become less picky as I've gotten older (not that I'm really doing any picking, being married), but short women just never did it for me.

Being a shortie is an advantage for some sports. Besides, the closer to the ground, the gentler the fall. Then there are sports that being the Jolly Green Giant is an advantage. That's just the physical mechanics of each sport.

Oh, I've never seen Katarina without skates, let's say. She's in damn good shape, I have to admit.

I really like the photograph on the bottom, from an artistic standpoint. Georgeous resolution and black and white skin tones. Very rich and silvery with lots of warm tones. One of the reasons that human skin and high quality black and white photography go so well together. Hey, I went to Art school! Can't help but look at nude photography this way.

anyone know what the deal is with television and men's hockey (starting this wednesday)?

i want to be able to watch these games live, will that be possible with NBC or its affiliates?

i think Olympic Hockey is one of the best sports tournaments in the world, perhaps third to the World Cup and the NCAA Tournament ... although the World Baseball Classic could slip in there, depending on how gung-ho the Americans are about it

really?  all the hockey fans i know argue the opposite ...

 a) the players play more passionately for their country than they do for their club team

 b) the group system is more interesting than a best of 7 series

 c) the top 4-5 teams are simply incredible, each one is an all-star team

 d) it only happens every 4 years

why do you like the stanley cup more?

I think if you find a North American born player and asked him if he could win a Stanley Cup or a gold medal, they'd say Stanley Cup. It's the best trophy in sports, and more respected.

I'll give you your points about single-elimination in the end opposed to best of 7, but I'd take the Stanley Cup over Olympics, although both are great.

And I realize I'm not who you asked.

good points on those things hoya....

my points for liking the Stanley Cup more is

   a) i grew up watching the NHL and i think the Stanley Cup, as julian said, is the greatest trophy in sports.  i love to see teams fight for it.

   b) i dont agree that the players try harder for the gold medal.  perhaps more than they do in the regular season, but i am talking about the playoffs here.

   c) to use one of your reasons, it only happens once every four years.  the NHL is (almost) every year and you get to know the players and which teams they are on, generally and the season builds to the playoffs.

   d) sudden death overtime that could possibly last for an eternity.

furthermore, i dont know, its like 4 or 5 teams, and then 7 beat up teams, so most of the games are not that interesting and then its like 3 days of great games, that are on at like 11am on a thursday morning and some asshole tells me the score before i get off of work so i know the result before the game is over anyway.

blah. Olympic hockey is cool, and for the kids who grow up knowing nothing but NHLers in the games, they may end up liking it better.

but no, i cant believe any player whos been anywhere NEAR the Stanley Cup, would rather have Olympic Gold.

The last three sports added to the winter olympics were:

 1. Curling - invented in Scotland and far more popular in Europe and Canada than in the U.S.
 2. Skeleton - Developed in St. Moritz.  Big in the Alpine countries.
 3. Snowboarding - Maybe you can say this is a U.S.-favored sport, but considering it's become the most popular winter sport (after skiing), I don't see how it could have ever been excluded from the Olympics.

i keep telling people, and i will say it again.

 TSN.CA

its better coverage of international sports and hockey.  if you want news on anything going on that doesnt ONLY concern America, go there.  if you want MLB, NFL, NBA or NCAA news, you can go to ESPN, otherwise, you just end up with watered down, misinformation, with some bad humour mixed in

oh, and Canada has been pretty darn disappointing this olympics too.

as I'm quite sure my kids are going to be supremely talented at both summer and winter olympic sports I'm sure we'll face a tough decision down the road as to whether the compete under the Irish, Filipino or US flags!

thats what i thought.  yes, if any one of those events were thrown in to boast US medals it would be the Short track.  snowboarding is just inevitably popular and its gonna be a long time til the US gets a curling gold!

Sorry, wrong again.

Historically, Canada was the short track powerhouse.  Recently, Korea has taken over.  The U.S. has consistently been way down on the list.

first of all , ggw...i wasnt "wrong" in the first place.   in my inital post, i questioned short track speed skating as a recent addition, i didnt say it was one of the top whatever, i just said, "recently" and you proved me right, by confirming that it came about in the last decade (recent enough, i think!).

secondly, i said, if ANY of those sports were to be considered to be more of a US sport , its Short track, because i was counting out snowboarding, their curling team sucks a big one, both men and women, and i dont believe they have a decent skeleton racer (you guys arent THAT crazy!)

therefore, with Ohno and i think some woman, America has a much better short track team, than curling or skeleton. and from what I've seen, they are getting better and better (the short track team)

if you are still trying to make this a matter or right or wrong, go ahead, but you are simply arguing with yourself, and if you think the US curling team is good, i suggest you watch those losers play a game.....

The US has placed a slider on the podium in four of the last five skeleton world championships, and we are ranked third according to the world curling federation.

But, I think we can all agree that curling, skeleton, and short track were not US-dominated sports when they became Olympic sports but that the US has now become relatively successful in them because we are the greatest nation in the world.

I don't know what's worse, USA winning just one game, or "The Almighty We Can't Be Beat Because Hockey Is Our Sport" Canada getting shut out three times.

you mean, "The Almighty We are the Best Country and all other countries only exist cause we let them" USA winning just one game or Canada getting shut out 3 times?

well, first of all, the USA had a terrible hockey team that played about to what they were capable of.  Canada just played crappy, and got just as bad a draw with Russia.

i still dont know about that lightning fast whistle on that would be tying goal late in the 3rd.

and besides, canada has won 1 gold medal in 50 years in hockey...no one i know in Canada thinks we cant be beat.  but i suppose american media makes us look that way.

very very disappointing, i was really rooting for USA to beat everyone but Canada, it is my home now!

Canada was scared of Russia the whole game, it never looked good from minute one.

its looking good for Finland and Russia should be a doozy.

I believe it's in two weeks.  The Dominican Republic and Venezuala actually look like the two best teams on paper right now.  As for Curling, I really thought the US men was gonna squeek one out against Canada a few days ago.  But then Canada pulled away at the end.  I guess now we just have Sasha too look forward to

I wish Finland would get the gold for a change...they are really rather rabid about hockey up in that frozen woodland.  And they have well-established rivalries with both the Swedes and the Ruskies...both hated neighbors.
