There's been some good records this year. I was surprised how much I ended up liking the Winehouse and Stripes discs. I could see the Monkeys disc moving up to Great, as I feel like it gets better and deeper every time I listen to it (which is how I felt about the 1st one).
Great:
Battles
White Stripes
Fratellis
Amy Winehouse
Arcade Fire
Good:
Good Bad & Queen
Pissed Jeans
Gallows
1990s
Dino Jr
Arcade Monkeys
Klaxons
National
Wilco
Panda Bear
Ehhhh:
LCD SS
Feist
Kings of Leon
NIN
Shins
-
You have good taste, relaxer. I agree with almost everything. I'd move "The Good, The Bad & The Queen" record up to "great" and the Kings of Leon album up to "good" but that's nitpicking.

maximo park - love love the new album!
same goes for the cinematics.
-
Did the Jarvis Cocker disc come out in 06 or 07?
-
I love the Of Montreal record.
-
Yeah me too. Not sure how I forgot to list that one.
-
Maybe you were being selective in what you were putting on your list. smiley

Clearly I haven't listened to enough 2007 music.
The Ponys
Radio Moscow
Vietnam
The new White Stripes is alright. The latter half better than the first, in my opinion.
The new Interpol sounds like Interpol, but nothing about it has grabbed me like their previous albums.
The new Burning Brides album has been a bit of a disappointment. I bet it will sound great live, but it finds their melange of styles tilting a bit too much to the heavy-rock side (and I have nothing against heavy rock).
I haven't heard the new Spoon yet, but the Post's glowing review today has piqued my interest.
2007 is still the Year of the Disppointing Follow Ups - see the Shins, Voxtrot, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, Clap Your Hands....
-
You can hear the Spoon here:

That list was actually pretty selective. I've listened to a lot of music this year.
-
My tastes are obviously not like those of this board.. well, maybe, but I admit it.
Stuff I'm excited about:
Pat McGee Band - These Days (The Virginia Sessions) .. this is what happens when you say fuck you to record labels. tasty.
and in no particular order things I need to buy and / or preorder:
Interpol
Josh Rouse
Matt Nathanson
Dream Theater
Yeah... eclectic, says i..
and i'm missing a few, but my list isn't here atm. =/
-
I must say I wasnt to keen on LCD's new album, but most of has grown on me now! Its really good. Same with the new Chem's album, I hope they start a US tour sometime soon.
-
Oh, and biggest disappointment of the year so far for me:
Linkin Park - minutes to midnight.
just not the same, total crap
-
Nighttiming by Coconut Records is still my favorite of the year so far. This thing was recorded practically without a budget in a friend of the artist's basement, and it is holding up like none other. I keep coming back to it and it keeps sounding good. If you are into simple, catchy pop songs a la weezer and elliott smith...seriously...check out this record.
also have been digging Apples in Stereo, Army of Me, Feist, Washington Social Club, Albert Hammond Jr, The Virgins, and not a whole lot else. oh. the new M.I.A. single. and the upcoming new Rilo Kiley single is pretty cool.
a little disappointed by new Rufus Wainwright and Rooney discs
a lot disappointed in the kings of leon
and also feel that i'm the only person in the country who is COMPLETELY UNDERWHELMED by Au Revoir Simone...what is the deal with that???
-
That new Rilo Kiley single is kind of yeah yeah yeahs-sounding.
-
So far for me:
Modest Mouse
Of Montreal
Wilco (most of it)
Blah:
Arcade Fire
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
The Shins
-
who let the sheep in? baa baa baa baa baa
Mavis Staples
Two Lone Swordsmen
Little Man Tate
David Vandervelde
The Red Button
Idlewild
(looks eMusic will be my primary source of new music this year)
-
Are you sure this wasn't an evilsanta post? MEOW! :D

the Fratellis record is by far my favourite.
i also like:
Little Barrie "Stand Your Ground"
Burning Brides "Hang Love"
White Stripes "Icky Thump" is good too.
-
In particular order...
1) Andrew Bird
2) Wilco
3) Bright Eyes
4) Editors
5) The Shins
6) The National
7) Menomena
8) Arcade Fire
9) The Twilight Sad
10) Electrelane
I am pretty sure the Spoon disk will be there by the end of the year--I am listening to it for the first time right now. Although it didn't meet my expectations, I think the Shins album is great. I am excited about the Josh Ritter album due out in the fall.
-
I'm liking this JPLS album a lot too. So much great minimal techno released this year.
-
Was a little disappointed with Arcade Fire and Bad Brains.
Queens of the Stone Age wasn't bad, but compared to their other stuff, not the best.
Would have to go with Modest Mouse, White Stripes, Fratellis, Smashing Pumpkins, Gallows.
Obviously the new Linkin Park sucks, but they suck, so i wouldn't call their album a disappointment. Just a typical LP album.
-

Yes. Mine, too. When are they coming to the 9:30 club?
Brian
-
Good:
Marnie Stern
Battles
Arcade Fire
Bad:
Stooges
-
The Best Damn Thing - Avril
-
I'm not in front of iTunes, so I can't speak definitely but here are some things that tickled me so far:
LOVED:
Marnie Stern
Deerhoof
Panda Bear
Wilco
LCD
The Ponys
The Twilight Sad
Hella (I know I'm in the minority, but taken on it's own, it's a good disc, IMO)
"Girlfriend" & the "Girlfriend" remix with Lil' Mama (sorry, had to edit thanks to vansmack's post)
GOOD:
Dino Jr.
Bjork
Ween (my Boognish tattoo is burning from typing that...)
Menomena
Of Montreal
Andrew Bird
Pissed Jeans (this may move up)
MEH:
Shins
Modest Mouse
BLECH:
Arcade Fire
Stooges
Oh, and I hate to admit it, but I really enjoy the Fratellis album. i'm guessing that will wear off soon, as it's pretty disposable, but as a fun summer record, it's holding on for the time being.
BAAAAA!!
:D

Brian [/b]
theyre not playing the 9:30 club anytime soon. go to Vfest - you can see them there. If you want a club date - your closest choices are Phila or NYC (at Roseland no less). you can also go to their lovely website www.thefratellis.com (http://www.thefratellis.com)
FYI - Sunday, 05 August, 2007
Giants Stadium
East Rutherford, NJ, US

Zach Hill will be with Marnie Stern at this upcoming rnr hotel date, no?
The title track on the Ween EP is pure gold.
-
I must say I'm surprised by how poorly received the Arcade Fire record is. I love it, and listen to it regularly. Might be that I didn't get into Funeral much, but did after digging on Neon Bible.
-
Yep.

Supposedly, it's Zach Hill and Robby Moncrieff from the Advantage. That should SLAY.

Thanks. I'd love to see them with the Police and/or in Philly but they are playing Philly the night I'm seeing the Police in Hershey and I'm having enough trouble in finding someone to go with as it is.

Jesus, this is like people working themselves into a lather over a "reunited" Wang Chung or Flock of Seagulls. Get over it people. The 80's ended over seventeen years ago. Maybe you didn't get the memo.
-
When reversed, the Kria Brekken/Avey Tare album is one of the prettiest sounding of the year.
Too bad they made the stupid move of releasing it backwards.
-

I feel the same way about the Shins album. I didn't really care about the Shins before Wincing the Night Away, but its my favorite album of the year so far.
-
I might have liked it better if I heard it before Funeral. Funeral was great and Neon Bible can't escape Funeral's shadow.

Agreed, but I'm so annoyed at the pointless pretension of releasing it that way that I can't get into it. I hold grudges.

You should just download the fixed version and forget the other one ever existed. :)
It's so relaxing; almost meditative.

Speaking of fixed versions, the vinyl version of "Icky Thump" was mastered by Stephen Hoffman, and it came out very differently compared to the CD version. Everyone who has heard it raves about it sounding much better than the CD version. Has anyone heard it?

1. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
2. The Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
3. Bright Eyes - Cassadaga
4. Explosions in the Sky - All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone
5. The Shins - Wincing the Night Away
6. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
7. Idlewild - Make Another World
8. Elliot Smith - New Moon
9. Maria Taylor - Lynn Teeter Flower
10. Laura Veirs - Saltbreakers
11. The Electric Soft Parade - No Need to be Downhearted
12. The Clientele - God Save The Clientele
13. Feist - The Reminder
14. Kamelot - Ghost Opera
15. Therion - Gothic Kabbalah

i want to make a correction that, although the Fratellis is still my favourite, Voxtrot self-titled CD is a very close second.
and it may be a toss up after i see them next week.

I'm going to add the new Page France to this.

I forgot about this one, and yeah, you're in the minority. I hate the new direction they've taken. The duo stuff is awesome, why did they decide to add new members?
-
Pretty good:
Manic Street Preachers
The National
Arctic Monkeys
Arcade Fire
The Rakes
Honorable mention goes to that "Grace Kelly" song
Not so much:
Fountains of Wayne
Travis
Kaiser Chiefs
Paul McCartney

My God! They released "Send Away the Tigers" over here? Or did you get it as an import? I thought they gave up on releasing their music over here about ten years ago.
Supposedly it's a "return to form." More "The Holy Bible" than "Lifeblood." I actually just watched the video for "You Love Us" yesterday.
Nicky Wire is the second greatest living Welshman next to....Tom Jones (natch.)
Brian

I got it overseas, but I understand it's coming out here at the end of this month. There's even talk that they may actually come to the US for promotion/shows (Hey Seth...).
I think it's closer to "Everything Must Go" than "The Holy Bible" but still a huge improvement over "Lifeblood".
EDIT: It's on iTunes now. CD in shops on the 24th.

Brian

Been digging the new:
Detroit Cobras
Dan Sartain
Gore Gore Girls
The Ponys
The Horrors
Grinderman, and
Damnation AD though most of it is old stuff re-recorded.
-
I agree. This new album sounds so cluttered. And that singer is sorta terrible.

... top 10:
Jay Reatard - Blood Visions (I don't care if this is a 2006 album, it shits on everything put out thus far.)
Andrew Bird - Armchair (from begining to end this is fantastic, and totally accesible)
Panda Bear - Person Pitch (like pet sounds on 12 hits of acid)
Lil Wayne - Da Drought 3 (illtastic.. say what you will, best flow around)
Battles - Mirrored (well layered electronica)
Scharpling & Wurster - Art of the Slap (not their best, but still better than the rest)
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black (4-5 unmistakably great songs)
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (if you don't like this album, I probably won't like you)
The National - Boxer (huge leap forward... makes Interpol's new album sound like Creed)
Birds of Avalon - Bazaar Bazaar (muy excellente)
-

pretty much true. and it's only 4 songs and 8 minutes, but the "night of broken glass" EP from this year is fucking awesome as well.

great news! so glad to hear theres hopes that theyll be back again. i saw them what seems like years ago at bimbos in SF and it was a brilliant show!
your list also reminded me: i must get the rakes album. its different than their last album, but has grown on me from the few times ive heard it.

Well, they are playing with The Ponys pretty soon (poster to come) so that should be a kick ass show.

Didn't think they sounded too great there.

i'd hardly call him crazy, he's not your average pop star but his music is fun and interesting and his previous albums have been pretty spectacular.

The new Dirty Projectors is phenominal! I could easily see it in my top 5-10 by year's end.

This Magik Markers is a pleasant surprise. Who would've guessed that Elisa had a decent singing voice?
-
voxtrot - voxtrot
battles - Mirrored
maps - we can create
digitalism - idealism
justice - justice
Motor - Unhuman
Tegan & Sara - the Con
Low - Drums and Guns
the Polyphonic Spree - the Fragile Army
Fujiya & Miyagi - Transparent Things
semi top ten for the year so far for me.
-
The fact raccoo-oo-oon has on been mentioned once is a travesty.
Also: LCD Soundsystem, Panda Bear, Bloc Party, National.
-
I listed raccoo-oo-oon.
-
julian, i think your recent conversion to born-again status has affected your ability to appreciate music. LCD was an above-average album, but isn't mind-blowing. the national falls into the same category: i don't see it surviving into many people's end-of-year "best of 2007" list.
-
I tend to listen to the same artists repetitively, so my best-ofs are mostly meaningless. That said, two albums that have managed to convert me are:
Boxer - The National
Marry Me - St. Vincent
I won't even pretend that Stars makes the list, despite them being my favourite group.
-
they suck live, too.
