almost unlistenable unless you're not in the right mood

True, although, Waltz #2 isn't sad for me - the tempo of the instruments is full to me.
I'm a dork - many songs by Glen Phillips/Toad The Wet Sprocket and then, Griffin House. I remember in college, a guilty pleasure of Sarah McLaughlin tunes.

The back to back of "Everything Reminds Me of Her" and "Everything Means Nothing to Me" by Elliott Smith (off of Figure 8) is some of the saddest, most devastating music I've ever heard. Those songs never fail to make me stop whatever I'm doing...stunning stuff. The fact that he's gone makes them all the more intense.
-
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot
-
Bird Stealing Bread-Iron & Wine

The more I think about, the 2 songs prior to that one on Berlin, The Kids and The Bed belong here as well. In fact, those 3 could go in the 3 song in a row thread from awhile back. It would be hard to top Berlin as a whole at being probably the saddest and most depressing release ever, while still being completely captivating.

Billy Ocean's "Carribean Queen" usually sheds a tear to my eye... ;)

Jesus & Mary Chain 'Something Wrong' is my favorite sad song.

Waltz #2 is CLASSIC.
The entire Death Cab library works quite well for me - anything off of We Have The Facts or Transatlanticism will have me bawling.
"Green Eyes" and "Amsterdam" by Coldplay
"The Longest Winter" by Pedro the Lion (and everything on that album)
then there's some stuff by U2
and Dashboard Confessional
and The Ataris
and...and...
And, well, as much as I was unimpressed with The Format's Interventions and Lullabies, their song "On Your Porch" is an amazing track.
...and I'm going to stop now. I could make an eternal list of wallowing. But I won't.
-

Joni Mitchell "Both Sides Now" (orchestral version)
Joni Mitchell "A Case of You" (orchestral version)

I think the only reason this list would make me sad is due to the overwhelming amount of crap.

The complete Smiths catalogue

Antony & the Johnsons - Hope There's Someone

Right. Well, you see, I listen to everything, as opposed to selective elitist artists. So I'm sorry you don't agree down to a tee with my musical choices. Some of those songs obviously have sentimental value to me. You don't have to be so rude about it.

Well, I guess I won't list my favorite sad hair band ballad songs, because I'm sure most people will think they are crap.

Perhaps "melancholy" or "nostalgic" would be a more apt desription. I just find the tone of the music to be somewhat forlorn.

If you don't know Lowlife, do yourself a favor and check them out. They were a great Scottish band from the 80s formed by Will Heggie of the Cocteau Twins.

I think it's a pretty well known fact that Buckley's rendition is the best ever...
And Tee wasn't necessarily saying it was a Jeff Buckley song. There are other covers posted above.
-
Uh, yeah, it's a fact. Though that conflicts with the fact that Cohen's original was the best. ;)
I wasn't implying that she specifcally was saying that it was a Buckley song. I've just seen it done at least a couple of times in the past.

Perhaps the next variation on your moniker should be "Charles Windsor, self-pitying individual."
