Bearman, you did the right thing seeing them in Philly.I lost alot of respect for someone i've admired greatly over the years.I thought I'd stumbled upon a BJM show for a minute.Complete mess.

Ian's voice was shot.  He made 2 attempts to sing Lips Like Sugar and couldn't get anything out.  Then tried another song and again his was  done.  Walked off stage after that.  Bummer!

Saw them Friday night in Lancaster and could tell Ian was having trouble with his voice. He was just pulling it off though for the band to still be amazing...

Sorry to hear about Saturday. I wouldn't judge him or the Bunns on that performace too much though. They are usually great live...

i'm sure it had nothing to do with the "bottle of water" (filled with dark substance) that he ws chugging.

 what an ass.

It was definitely his voice...Philly was superb, what a trainwreck yesterday though! It was like night and day...further proof that sometimes bands have good days and bad. Ian looked a HELL of lot better than David Johansen of the NY Dolls. He's the next one to go for sure. That was just fucking scary.

Bushmills.I have no doubt that his voice may have been going, but he certainly compounded his dilemma.Completely unprofessional IMHO.Makes for an interesting  mixtape closer though clocking in at a whopping 7:52 in it's entirety

It was a major bummer that Ian & Co. didn't get to play on Saturday. I was right in front just for them and was beyond bummed. His attempt at Rescue, asking for help from the audience seemed a good attempt. the asses behind me, and most the crowd simply kept booing. and of course, none of them knew the words. what a shame! i'd like to think that perhaps if the crowd was a bit more supportive he'd have tried a bit harder. with that crowd it seemed pointless!

just my $.02 ... shirley sounded quite great after that which was great since I missed garbage. and ive never heard so many people ask who billy idol was. simply blew my mind away! im guessing these people didnt even have a clue who the NY dolls were.

Here are the facts.  Ian's voice was completely shot since even the day before, he was hoping it would get better before the show.  Yes he smokes like a chimney.  Yes he had been drinking.  There was nothing that could be done about his voice.  He went out there, he put in his best effort and then left.  He was very upset over the whole situation.  The whole band was bummed for the rest of the afternoon.    There it is.  I haven't lost any respect for the band.  They are true rockstars--this would have been my first time hearing them live.  It didn't happen, but they're really cool people, and were extremely apologetic for the whole situation.

From an old Echo fan.  This is on their website:

 May 16, 2005
 A Statement from The Bunnymen

Echo And The Bunnymen would like to say sorry, for what happened on the 14th May at the WHFS festival.

We understand your frustration at the set being cut short and the way this was dealt with by Mac.

 Unfortunately, Mac lost his voice.

He was having problems with his voice at the two warm-up shows, in Philadelphia and Lancaster.    Luckily his voice held out for these  -  un-luckily, it didnâ??t hold out for the festival.

This was a massive show for the Bunnymen, and expectation was high  -  Macâ??s frustration at being unable to continue led to him getting angry and storming off stage.

Mac wanted to try to do the show â?? rather than go for the easy option of cancelling.

 Unfortunately, this didnâ??t work out.

Mac would like to humbly apologise for what happened, to all the fans.

Hmmmmm...at least that. I am sorry that his voice crapped out, but in true rock star fashion he just made it seem like he couldn't give a flying fuck. That's just not how I would have handled it because there are a lot of people out there that wouldn't have bothered going to look for his apology. It's too bad that the show didn't happen, and it's a shame that Mac didn't just tell the HFS folks in advance so more time could have been allotted to other bands.

Wow, glad I didn't leave my NYC weekend to get back to see the show....Echo would have been one of my motivating factors.

Distance, what do you mean going back and listening to the May 13 show?  Is it online somewhere?

For those who saw the Echo fiasco in Baltimore, management says to hold onto your HFS ticket stubs. They are apparently going to make an announcement and try to make it up to disappointed fans.

For some reason I saved my e-tickets on my computer, looks like I may have had reason too! That would be WAY cool!

I agree. Mac just might get a chance to redeem himself. Usually they are one of my absolute fave live bands...that was the only time I've ever walked away disappointed.

Musically, they were sounding great, particularly considering the venue.Mac just didn't have it in him.I'll chalk it up to a case of bad judgement on his part.If they actually make this up with a show,I'd be mighty impressed. Not too many would under those circumstances. It's not like it was an actual Echo show that they tanked. This could be a blessing in disguise.
