I saw this in the "just announced" thread, but this deserves its own topic. :D I'm so happy!! I may be flying back to DC to catch them at the 9:30 again. Many great memories of seeing them perform there.
SUPERDRAG LINE-UP REUNITES FOR SELECT U.S. DATES
Knoxville, TN - Superdrag will be back on tour this Fall, with all four
original members. Last seen onstage together more than 8 years ago, the
original line-up of John Davis (guitar, vocals), Don Coffey Jr (drums),
Brandon Fisher (guitar) and Tom Pappas (bass) have 6 performances
scheduled for 2007.
Though Superdrag may be best-known for their 1996 major-label debut
Regretfully Yours and the hit single "Sucked Out" that helped launch the
band towards international success, the follow-up Head Trip In Every
Key, issued in 1998, was widely regarded as the band's creative peak.
Amidst label woes and line-up changes, namely the departures of founding
members Pappas and Fisher, the band would issue their third and fourth
full-lengths In The Valley Of Dying Stars and Last Call For Vitriol to
universal critical accolades, and expand their hard-won fanbase through
incessant touring, with the help of bassist Sam Powers and guitarist Mic
Harrison. Many of Superdrag's latter-day fans have never had an
opportunity to see the original line-up onstage together...until now!
Tickets will be on sale through (???) beginning July (??) for the
following dates:
10.05.07 Nashville, TN City Hall
10.13.07 Chicago, IL Metro
10. 20.07 Knoxville, TN Barley's Taproom
11.02.07 New York, NY The Fillmore @ Irving Plaza
11.03.07 Boston, MA Paradise Rock Club
11.08.07 Washington, D.C. 9:30 Club
Superdrag formed in 1993. The band issued 3 acclaimed 7"s and one EP,
The Fabulous 8-Track Sound Of Superdrag, before the release of their
first proper full-length in 1996. Changin' Tires On The Road To Ruin, a
collection of b-sides, alternate versions and rarities, was released in
April 2007.

Damnit. You beat me to it.
I think I just peed a little in my cargo shorts.
-
i'm super excited about this.
'sucked out' is like my karaoke mainstay... well, that and 'pussy control.'
-
I heard the whole show is going to be Christian rock.

Wow. Superdrag SUCK

I've listened to them and saw them live, and I don't get the fuss. Decent bar band, nothing more.

The Pixies haven't worn well for me. I listened to them all the time years ago, but can't take them for more than a song at a time anymore. Are you able to listen to them on a regular basis?

if a band that can take the beach boys, my bloody valentine, raspberries, and SST label stuff a decent bar band then sign me up

I have it on good authority that there is NO Christian rock...only Superdrag songs...pretty much limited to the first two albums and previous EP's. For me, "Head Trip in Every Key" is one of the 5 best albums of the 90's. It'll be fantastic to hear those songs again. Their website mentions they will be holding an online survey to determine the set list. Just saying...

I'm not sure that's a complete, coherent, comprehendable sentence, but ok.

I won't have access to a computer until tomorrow night...think that'll pose a problem getting presale tickets? [If so, I can have someone do it for me...]

Yes, it's called "Senorita" (they opened the two Farewell to Sam shows back in 2002 with it).

Yes it was and God is voting for "Sugar" from "The Fabulous 8 Track Sounds" EP.

Let me sum it up for you:
They were only relevant in the 90's.

They were the biggest music act on earth, at one point.

You could make the same case for a band like Dinosaur Jr. but their reunion shows were still great. I don't equate relevance with brilliance however. Superdrag's last (in 2002) ranks with their best work. And I still don't see why "bar band" is a bad thing. Seems every band I love has been given this label at some point. Then again, I love seing bands in bars.
-
Nothing wrong with being labeled a "bar band". I'll take a great bar band over a hundred obscurist, loopy, loved by pitchfork bands. The Hold Steady is a great "bar band". The Bottle Rockets were a great bar band, back in the 90's. In my opinion, Superdrag is a decent bar band, and that's being generous. If they rate higher for you, well good for them. Enjoy.

Just for clarification, I was summing up the vitriol that was going to come out of Brian's keyboard.
That in no way reflects my opinions of Superdrag.
-
I agree there aren't enough bar bands doing the circuit these days, was totally won over by The Hold Steady at bonnaroo. nothing with a little over the top alcohol soaked sloppy rock and roll.
as long as it's completely fuel by the bar, which is part of my disdain for Superdrag. That night at the Metro Cafe is seared in my brain as one of the worst shows ever witnessed. the singer was plastered, loudly tuned his guitar between every song, and there were all these people screaming about how these were the greatest songs ever written. guess i'll give them a second chance seeing as so many dig em' here.
-
considering now john is sober
it should be a lot different
also while i dont agree they were some of the best songs ever written...not even close, the songs are strong and some of the catchiest power-pop you'll hear

No argument here. The Hold Steady are THE bar band of the moment and I love them. It just seems like the term implies a certain lack of musical competence. It also carries a connotation that their fans are limited to frat boy lunkhead-types and "wooo" girls. I'm guessing a casual fan might see the Old 97's as a bar band. Then again, maybe I've never really understood what the term meant.
Superdrag seemed more like a bar band in an actual bar. On their albums, the songs had a lot more texture than was evident in their live shows. I, too, am curious to see what a sober John sounds like with the old material.

I thought that was a great show.

I was there too. Not a great Superdrag show (even by John Davis standards, that was an extra boozy night). But that was the night I fell in love with the Sheila Divine. Too bad everything they did after album #1 sucked eggs.

I recommend the first four tracks off of "Head Trip In Every Key" as a primer.
-
Ah, The Sheila Divine! Another band I love and miss. Aaron Perrino's voice...*sigh*. I traveled many times to Boston and Cambridge to see them perform.
-
i thought the Put-Outs rocked that night wasn't really impressed by the Shelia Divine... i was only at that show hoping that Negro Problem who were originally schedule would actually get to play, after they get bumped in favor of Superdrag
-
ah, the put-outs. the put-outs and superdrag in baltimore in 2002 is still one of the best gigs i've ever seen.

you have it on cd? woah, how did i miss that? gotta get me a copy of that show.
-
I did sound so I made a CD of the show. I have to clean it up to get it down to one CD.
I am bummed I didn't record the 930 show they did after that one, that was a great show.
-
i'm pretty sure i saw an ash/superdrag/nada surf show at irving plaza back in 1996. maybe 1997? but that was a long time ago, it's hard to remember that far back. does that sound right? i thought ash sucked it hard but the other two bands, riding high on their buzz clips, were really good.
-
My first Superdrag show ever was at 9:30 in 1996 with For Squirrels, The Nixons, and Echobelly. One of the most fucked up bills I've ever seen at the Club.
-
What ever happened to FOR Squirrels? They ahd that one song, "Mighty KC" about Kurt Cobain. Then...
-
On September 8, 1995, while returning from playing the CMJ Music Marathon in New York City, the band was involved in an auto accident that killed [singer Jack] Vigliatura, White, and their tour manager, Tim Bender.

The Superdrag show I mentioned was actually after the van accident. The surviving members tried to make a go of it, and I seem to remember that KC song getting some play. But that 9:30 show was the last I ever heard of them.
-
the superdrag show when they played a full set at 9:30 because GBV had to cancel is one of my top 5 9:30 shows ever, because of both the band and the company, shame no portland date yet

They will not be adding any west coast dates. These six are it. Hey, I'm sure you can get a cheap flight to Dulles Pollard. Just don't tell Rhett. He hates to see boardies waste money flying all over to see bands--bar bands no less.

I was at that show, too! It would be great if they came to Portland and they do have a sort-of tie here, but if they don't I'll be at the 9:30 show for sure.
Edit: There's no such thing as a "cheap" flight from PDX to Dulles. However, it does have the advantage of being a non-stop flight option via United, which is why I typically fly there instead of to BWI.

People who judge bands on a barometer of terms like "relevant" and "important" are douchebags. Those words are totally subjective and essentially meaningless. And who gives a shit anyway? Do you like the music? That should be enough. I've never thrown out a cd and said to myself "wow, i really like these songs, but they're not IMPORTANT so I have to get rid of this." [/END RANT]

People who take a random person's concept of cultural relevance so seriously that they feel the need to rant about it are douchebags. I've never read someone talking about a critical abstraction like "importance" and said to myself "wow, their pomposity angers me so much that i feel the need to bitch and moan about it on an internet message board." Especially when that person is obviously being sarcastic and mocking someone else. [/END RANT]

They wanted to do some west coast dates but it didn't work out. These dates are the only ones they'll be playing. After these shows, John will be getting back to finishing/promoting his next solo record. So if you want a 'Drag fix, the 9:30 show is your last chance for now.
