With the increased recent traffic on the bboard it can be rather time consuming catching up on threads if you are but a few hours behind.
There are a few posters of whose prodigous output I just skim over entirely without reading any of it. (doubtless some feel the same re: moi?)
Is there a technical way to enable an "ignore" feature which would block posts from those posters on one's personal 'blocked-list' from showing up? I know it's possible, for I have seen it in action on other bboards with quite similar software to this one.
I'm sure it would be a much-appreciated feature.
Does anybody second this motion?

I wouldn't necessarily want to ignore any particular poster, I'd just want to ignore any post with the following words in them:
Justin Timberlake
Radiohead
Mars Volta
football
footie
Placebo
Manchester
Quentin Taratino
Princess Diana
Gwyneth Paltrow
Iggy Pop
The Strokes
sports cars
hockey
the 80's
Jack White
Jack Black
metrosexual
Guster
Britney Spears
Christina Agulera
Ozzy Osbourne or any of his ugly dysfunctional family
jam bands
intoxication
drug use
No Doubt and
Blink 41

Dupek, I think everybody has wished for that kind of "ignore button" from time to time. I don't know about this current board software version but it is certainly possible in theory. However, it doesn't work as well as you'd hope in real life. If someone's output is never worth a look, it's just as easy to never read their posts. The trouble is, most people post useless stuff only part of the time. So you find yourself turning their "ignore" flag off and on and off again bcause that's the only way to make sense of a thread sometimes. It ends up being more work than just gritting your teeth and hitting <page down>. Most people I correspond with on Yahoo (where "ignore" was introduced on the boards to great fanfare 2 or 3 years ago) have stopped using it.

If that were true you wouldnt feel the need to make asinine comments about individual groups, or races.
I think there is something wrong with you:

But couldn't one quite easilly get the gist of a particular thread by reading the "quoted" passages written by the blocked-list poster, as those parts aren't usually blocked by this type of program?

there is plenty wrong with me. and i hate you too.
but sometimes a comment fitts in with the subject being spoken of, or at least in my mind it does.

There is an option at the bottom that says "Add to your Ignore List."
I've never done it but I'm guessing that it does what you what you are looking for.
Wow, what a nice guy I am - I just told everybody how to ignore my useless posts.

If you're so concerned with the plight of the Black Man, why don't you do one or more of the following:
1. Adopt a young Black orphan baby.
2. Volunteer at a tutoring center to help Black children with their schoolwork.
3. Join the Big Brutha program where you take a Black child and hang with him one weekend a month.
4. Volunteer at a soup kitchen for the homeless once a month.
5. Teach in an inner city school.
Any of these would be helpful to the Black community. Calling a misguided teenager who makes a stupid, offensive comment on a chatboard a "racist" may clear your guilty liberal white mind, but it don't do anything toward making the world a better place for Blacks.
And besides, if someone stupidly uses the "n" word to get a rise out of people on an internet board, that doesn't necessarily make him or her a racist. It makes them stupid and offensive, but in my mind you'd need to spend some time around someone and listen to their opinions and thoughts for a while before you could make an honest assessment of their true feelings, castigating and designating him or her a "racist".

Why are you including me in this? Did I ever mention a specific username? I was just positing a general query...
How would you like it if i lumped you & Rhett together in the same post?

No way! I saw that Michelle Pfieffer movie. I think Coolio forced her into butt-love in it.

You're right, the "ignore" function does work like that wherever I've seen it implemented. A lot of times, though, people seem to find themselves wanting more gist than is available with the offending poster completely blocked out. Hence the constant toggling that causes many people to give up on the "ignore" feature after a while. I'm not arguing against it, mind you--no doubt different folks have different ideas about how useful it really is--just commenting that it might not be the panacea that it seems on first glance
-
You're probably right. It could be fun to xspearmint with, but not seeing the big picture would frustrate anyone. Still, we could always stand a trial period. Maybe it would catch on with those who wish to block a certain nameless troll & his thousand separate accounts from interrupting their own personal space?
-
Who knew Dupek, or any of his many separate names, could write in a concise, coherent, complete sentence? Must be an imposter. :)

only black people are homeless?

Screen names are different than accounts, as you well know.

I will swear on my Dad's grave that I have only ever used three accounts on this board (and only this one in the last year.) Those would be:
Rhett Miller
the Instigator
some sort of fake name that was a play on poorlulu back when posing as a regular was the height of popularity
I have never used my wife Celeste's account, nor have I accidentally posted from it (we rarely post from home anyway). Nor have I ever told her what to post. There have been times that she made statements that I "stole" from her, and posted under my Rhett Miller name as thoughts of my own withour giving her proper credit.
I am not the Black Nerd, though I have a good idea who is.
I am not Flawd, nor do I know anything else about him. He is funny though.
I am not sure who else I have been accused of being, but none of the accusations were true.. I have only been Rhett Miller since I lost the password to the Instigator, which was probably 12+ months ago.
