So, I went on a used CD shopping spree this weekend, in an attempt to buy some new music I've heard about, but never listened to. The results varied, but Mankie, I blame you for my worst purchase. I bought Beautiful South's "Quench", and it is horrible. Thank god i had the smarts to listen to The Waterboys at a listening station or i might have waisted good money on their newest disk too. $3.99 down the drain.
Not my only crappy purchase however. I bought a Blood Brother's CD, not sure which one, it sucks. And I got the newest Black Eyes disc. I wasn't all that thrilled, but there is at least the promise of something there. Overall, a bad day shopping, though I did gt a cheap Muse Cd and finally discovered Air Miami. But Markie, I hate to say it, but your recommendations were bad. No wonder you're such a cranky old man. You've got nothing good to listen to.

what store did you go to?
i'm having trouble finding a place that still buys used CDs.
-
Are you still bitter because your baseball team choked worse than a dog in Korea?
Anyone who doesn't appreciate The Beautiful South or The Waterboys is simply less music savvy than I....you keep your Bon Jovi collection and I'll keep my collection of the finest music ever written.

I went used CD shopping this weekend as well. Haven't listened to anyof it yet, but here's the list:
Shins, the new one
Two Softies albums
GBV, Bee Thousand
Imperial Teen
The Three O'Clock (an old album I only have on vynil)
Scout
Metric
Phaser (they opened for British Sea Power...)
Papas Fritas
A Perfect Circle
I Am Kloot
Eels, Shootenany
Le Tigre
Magnetic Fields

I saw a Beautiful South cd for $1, and I almost bought it...but my wife convinced me it would be a waste of money based on the Housemartins tape I had played her. She also hated the Waterboys tapes I played for her...tough critic, I guess.

I know they eat dogs in Korea, but your reference is still vague at best. If i knew anything about the Premier League other than Alan Shearer is an EA Sports stud, I'm sure I'd come up with something better than that as a rag on whoever your team is.

I have old Waterboys (only up to Fisherman's Blues), and it's great (though I have to be in the mood, sometimes Mike Scott's vocals grate on me). Have no idea what newer stuff might sound like.

I meant to buy the Shins, but totally forgot about it. Still kicking myself after some of the slop i got.

A comment like that coming from you two I take as a huge compliment towards my musical tastes. Seriously though, I wouldn't even use any of the cd's you own as coasters in my house.
Do you always do what your wife says by the way?

Oh, thats where I was. There was plenty of good stuff I passed up for shit, so you will have a lot to choose from.
-
Would you use my first three Belle and Sebastian cd's or four Smiths cd's as coasters? Wouldn't my copies play as well as yours?
No, I don't always do as my wife say, but I do listen to her advice, and am happy to have a best friend who often agrees with my thoughts, though sometimes offers me thoughtfully constructed oppositional (to my own) ideas to consider.

-
The reason I picked up the CD is that I'm planning on going to that show. Hope it's fun!

It's on Broad Street (Route 7) about equidistant from either Metro stop.

I've personally never sold anything there, but I've seen lots of others bringing stacks of discs in.

that place is awesome, as is the great used cd store/exchange up at tenley

Well some might consider me an egomaniacal jerk who controls every little move of my vapid "yes" girl, where others may consider me a pussy whipped little boy. The real answer lies somewhere boringly in-between, just like most other people.
Who wears the pants in the Mankie household?

Redsock, please be sure to differentiate carefully beween Mankie and Markie. We are twins and somewhat alike. But he was born first so he inherits the family gayness, the love of his aide and the family fortune.
I am not as bitter as him, unless you call me by his name.
Quench is OK. I prefer 0898. But if you are prepared to try quench a little more tracks 1 and 4 are pretty good.... Perfect 10 is very fine pop.
Why did you by blood brothers? It might be worse than Mars Volta.
Bagster Which I am kloot did you get (and how much for)? When you listen to Metric please let me know what you think. I really like the combat baby single, but fear it might be another bandages/hot hot heat type thing......

right on wisconsin pretty much, very close to the metro stop.

Don't let em in on the secret Paige...the Tenleytown place sucks. Don't bother going there. All they have is alt-country.

I certainly know the difference, and unless there was a misplaced "r" somewhere, i think i kept it straight. But if you like the Beautiful South, then shame on you too. Track one almost made me get back in the car and drive the cd back to the store to ask for my money back.

I got "Natural History," the only cd they had. $13.95 -- I'd looked for I Am Kloot online and they were always mid-$20s, so I grabbed it. Hope it's a goodie.
Will do on the Metric. I actually bought that one new, as I'd just read about it. It was a frenzy, I tell you!

ON? I got that one and feel that it is treading water compared to the first two albums.

We all did, it was cold this morning so my wife wore trousers for work and I dressed Rory in a nice pair of cords and rugby shirt for the same reason....why the question? What's the relevance?
Redsock, if you can't appreciate The Beautiful South or Waterboys, then I simply cannot waste one more millisecond of my life on you, so please don't make comments to/about me that require a response as you won't get one, thank you.
For anyone else who comes across a Beautiful South cd, may I suggest a 'greatest hits' compilation as it may take a little while to appreciate his wit and humour in the lyrics. Of course, it helps to be a Brit but the doodles on this board should "get it" for the most part....right markie?
-
Yup, I got "On" -- dammit! Well, all you can do is try.

I dont know, the constant UK airplay really helped to get the singles under my skin. But there is a fair bit of sly humour that Doodles dont get. Allmusic picks up on the peter Lorre, and lorry wordplay.
Still I think the earlier albums are better than quench.
They all have great meoldies and wit though, I dont think it is that much of a stretch to like them, they are a bit "housewives favourite" though.
I like them.

I got ON used recently as well, and I like it, but I think seasick is better.

On seemed Ok to me.
Bagster, where did you do your shopping? (Apologies if you said already)
-
yesterday I got around to buying some things I had wanted for a long time from Amazon.....
Absolute Classic Masterpieces: Felt
Amazing Grace: Spiritualized ('twas cheap)
Anthology [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] Xray spex
Crazy World of Arthur Brown [IMPORT] [Audio CD] Brown, Arthur
Stains on a Decade: Felt
Twenty Odd Years: Vic Goddard and the Subway Sect (45 songs for $7 new, its on backorder though. Plus its on emusic. Some of it is really good.)
-
I went to Amoeba in San Francisco -- my first trip to an Amoeba anywhere. CDs weren't cheap -- used ranged from 4.95 to 8.95. But it was a glorious three hours in a huge, huge store.
-
Been to Amoeba in SF and LA...both trips very fruitful. Maybe the best stores I have been to, period. Haven't been to the Berkeley store yet.

Ok, that makes tons of sense. with the list you had I guessed it was going to be somewhere good. Last time i was at the SF store I spent $150. I found loads of used scratched cds for really cheap. I couldnt even see any scratches most of the time.
-
god i loved amoeba in sf........
the box sets and rare stuff behind the counter was mouthwatering...........
the biggest problem was knowing where to start...........completely overwhelming...........
-
Yup, I got overwhelmed and couldn't go through the $3 and $1 sections. I went through the entire "new arrivals" section, which was as big as the whole middle island in DCCD. And then I went band by band for some things.
Can't wait to check out the L.A. store.
HEY -- now you'll know me at shows by my Amoeba t-shirt, which I bet I wear a lot for a couple months! Or else I'm in my most beloved Fleshtones t-shirt. Oh yeah, go Brooklyn!!

They never get a good review from the British press anyway...just like the Smiths back in the day.
That review says absolutely NOTHING about the album, good or bad. I received my copy yesterday and after a couple of listens find it very good....the lyrics are Heaton as his usual sarcastic/cynical self. I think you have to be a Beautiful South fan to appreciate it though, so not one to introduce casual music fans to.....which begs the question for markie, greatest hits compilations not included, what BS album would you recommend if you were introducing someone to the BS?
-
I dont even have them all......
Personally the first or the third,
Welcome to the beautiful South and O898.
Allmusic recommends welcome to the beatiful South and blue is the colour. I dont have the later, I dont like its singles that much.
