It was my every intention to go, but alas, my Labor Day Weekend has proven to be too expensive for me to afford to go.  such is life...

about the band, giving them a try...I dunno...I thought even this crowd had better taste...their single sounds like that George Michael song "Freedom"...

I haven't heard them at all, but have some friends into them.  I drag folks along to my shows, so I'm obliging.  I'm optimistic the show will be fun...

I didn't go there for the music, they just happened to have karaoke there that night. I went for the race (I actually went to keep my husband company.) So, going to a bar is not really going to a "crap show". Try again.

i am assuming the Old 97's would be my easiest target.  ;)

Wilco, I'm sure you seen them.

and i would have to go back to old topics to remember exactly which dull, tiresome, droning altcountry bands you have seen lately.

of course, my only point being here is that you think those shows are worth spending money on.

Aren't those the same descriptions that people generally attribute to Radiohead?

According to MSN Entertainment: "Thom Yorke was born with a vision ailment: his left eye was paralyzed and shut and until the age of six, underwent a total of five operations. The last operation was botched and he almost lost all sight out of that eye (only after wearing an eye patch for a year was he able to see, albeit slightly)."

 Whatever the cause, it truly is , to quote Thirsty, "f'ed up."  <img src="http://www.geocities.com/thom_yorke99/thomrugged.jpg" alt=" - " />

making fun of someone with a problem or handicap that someone you love has, is kind of ridiculous dont you think?

my grandmother died of emphesyma, but i am not going to poke fun at others who have it. wouldnt it make you more sensitive to that?

Good christ, can't even make a joke around here without the UN coming at me.  Both you and markiepants are hardly one to point fingers.  Of course I don't make fun of my Grandmother.  The woman's a saint.

I was pulling one of those inclusive clauses.  Because I know someone it entitles me to make fun of someone else.

Once again, Rhett proves that, where there is a line, he will cross it.

Sorry, man. My dad died of cancer. They said his smoking had nothing to do with it. Still, after watching him wither away to nothing, I just think people who smoke are some of the dumbest fuckers on earth.

I think I remember Thirsty or one of the early members mentioning that there were lots of good fights on here long before my time.

I really didn't mean to upset Sonic in the way he was upset, (nor did I mean to upset other people to any great extent in times past). Smoking and it's effects are just one of the things that gnaws me, so I'm going to take every opportunity to lash out against it.

Fun show.  Almost sold out, and really mixed crowd.  Very 70s -- at times, like a mix of Dee-Lite and jamiroqouis, with Elton John thrown in.  Not as 'glam" as I thought. One song sounded almost exactly like "Love Roller Coaster."  Quite a spectacle.  As a friend said, fun to have a dance band that's not house...  But, then I gave him Franz Ferdinand.  We'll see how psyched he is about that CD!  The boy's coming to see Metric with us now, too....    :D

In terms of this comment you are commenting on here...my point was that I think the 9:30 board, as it is today, is probably a hell of a lot more interesting than it was when there were 10 or so of the same music nerds getting along agreeably and liking the same top 10 WOXY bands.

Back to the "TOPIC" at hand...  I thought the show rocked last nite.  I am now a scissor sisters fan, and will go see them again.

The crowd was very much into it, and DJ Sammy spun a great set... Very retro.  not trance like someone on here said it would be.  And when Michael Jackson's "wanna be starting somethin" the crowd lost it!  it was bananas!

My comment was a followup to Kosmo's comment that the board used to be 10 people talking about music, with no quarrelling.

It was not meant as a followup to my apology, nor was it meant as a reference to my initial comment which I apologized for. Rather, it was meant as a general jab toward what Kosmo said about how the board was in the early days.

Though I do think that this board is slanted in a way that doesn't reflect the taste of the typical music fan (e.g. How many discussions do we have about various jam bands (who sell lots of concert tickets), other than to summarily dismiss them all as garbage?), I wouldn't go as far as to say it's narrow. Certainly it's probably less narrow now than when there were a minimal number of members.

ok so it's quite possible that the "hot" acts of woxy are discussed here, but whats wrong with loads of people feeling the same vibe from a band.

as far as people having the same tastes that just silly... econo and i have been around the longest and we have divergent tastes in what we like.  although we usually agree on what sucks.

jam bands were for the most part ignored in the dark ages of the forum, seeing as they hadn't graduated to playing the club yet.  still playing "off the chain" shows in frat houses on the east coast.

Other than number 10, I don't recall anything more than passing mention of a couple of these bands:

 9-8-2004 -- Top 10 WOXY Bands:

 1 Cake
 2 The Donnas
 3 R.E.M.
 4 A Girl Called Eddy
 5 Faithless
 6 Head Automatica
 7 Elvis Costello
 8 Elliott Smith
 9 The Faint
 10 Guided By Voices

 Don't forget # 16:

 Drive-By Truckers

Ok, compare that top ten to the current Americana top 10 http://americanaradio.org/ama/displaychart.asp?mode=lw (http://americanaradio.org/ama/displaychart.asp?mode=lw)

and tell me the amount of mention on this board that WOXY top 10 bands compared to Americana top 10 bands correlates with the sales of each.

It's not like this board is a WOXY board, or even a Black Cat or Iota board, all of which would tend to have skewed audiences. This is the 9:30 board, a club which books an amazing array of genres of music, but whose chatboard really doesn't reflect that.

So now you are on a crusade for a proportional representation of chatboard participants based both on album sales data and the frequency with which artists in particular genres play at the 9:30 Club?

but it would reflect it less if we talked about Americana bands, since they almost NEVER play the 930 club.

furthermore, your continuing sales comment is very tiring. Sales have nothing to do with how good a band is , or how many people have heard of them for that matter....

Not true. Take a look at the current 9:30 Club schedule. Old 97's, Drive By Truckers, Mindy Smith, the Cramps (if you stretch the definition of Americana), and an as yet unannounced show by Del McCoury Band with Donna the Buffalo are all on the schedule.

Also, if you take a look at the Americana Charts, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill (Notorious Cherry Bombs), Dave Alvin, Old 97's, Loretta Lynn, Drive By Truckers, Los Lobos, and Wilco have all played the 9:30 Club, some of them numerous times.

But of course the only ones of those that get mentioned with any kind of regularity on this board are the ones who are also played on WOXY...Wilco and maybe the Drive By Truckers.

but a quick look at the show list now,

 WOXY band shows like...
Siouxsie, Snow Patrol, The Killers, The Black Keys, Libertines, Walkmen, Sam Roberts, Flogging Molly, Keane, French Kicks, Ambulance, Supergrass, Hope of the States, Coheed and Cambria, Radio 4, Minstry, Helmet and Blonde Redhead (with unannounced Death Cab, Muse, PJ Harvey, Deftones, and Interpol shows) significantly outnumber the 4 or 5 Americana bands you have listed. 2 of which being bands WOXY plays anyway (old 97s and DBT)

I'm not trying to be difficult, but you're still missing me.  Michael Jackson has sold millions upon millions of albums, and just about everyone in the world has heard of him.  And if you head to the mall and ask random people who they've heard of, Creed (a band we can all agree has sold a lot of albums but blows) or the Clash (a band we can agree hasn't sold as many records but doesn't blow), I think the answer would easily be Creed.

I don't think you would be missed much either if you departed. I don't think any one board member would really be missed that much.

If I were to find a good locally based music board that was more to my liking, I would certainly consider going there.

As it is, my goal is to stay here and corrupt the masses into expanding their musical palates. And occasionally expanding my own with bands I never would have considered listening to (e.g. The Libertines, the High Strung, etc.)

guess what we need since we already have the Thom York wing on the forum, is a Rhett Miller wing.  along with a Rivers Cuomo and Kurt Cobain wings.

Surely among the other 7000 people registered here there were people willing discuss the latest Americana bands.

I'm also sure we could turn the forum into discussion site for HFS and DC101 bands if thats more to your liking....

This description from allmusic certainly lends to putting the Cramps into the Americana category. To me, their sound is derived from rockabilly, and you can't get much more Americana than that.

Conjuring a fiendish witches' brew of primal rockabilly, grease-stained '60s garage rock, vintage monster movies, perverse and glistening sex, and the detritus and effluvia of 50 years of American pop culture, the Cramps are a truly American creation much in the manner of the Cadillac, the White Castle hamburger, the Fender Stratocaster, and Jayne Mansfield.

I would say CCR were definitely Americana, though it wasn't called that at the time. Same goes for Tom Petty, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, and the Byrds.

Counting Crows might best be referred to as watered down pop Americana. Sort of like calling Coldplay "Britpop".

good comparison.

Perhaps not.

But considering you spend more of your time slagging the musical tastes of others than promoting your own tastes, you would probably be better off elsewhere.

Except, it's pretty obvious that you enjoy trolling, as it probably gives an illusion of value to your otherwise sorry life.

well said.  post some links to some good Americana bands, perhaps some with more rock flavour than country flavour and perhaps you would find interest would be wide. something like that,

but then if we all liked it, you would probably stop.

Thank you, Sonick.  Rhett, take your example -- there are, say, six shows a week at the club.  That means all the Americana bands coming up constitute one week out of 2.5 months worth of shows announced.  Not much, and I've heard several of them discussed here -- by someone besides yourself.

Yes, the 9:30 Club is very diverse (or I'd be there 4 times a week every week, not just this week...).  However, in terms of indie/alternative/WOXY, that's certainly a mainstay genre represented.  Going back historically, as well.  If the Black Cat had a board, I'm sure a lot of us would post there as well.

I just don't get it.  If you think the board is skewed, why not stay with your Robbie Fulks brethren?

but a quick look at the show list now,

Do yourself a favor and go to Iota Friday and Monday and see Big Sandy and Robbie Fulks. Then go see the Drive By Truckers. Then next month go see Jason Ringenberg at Iota. Then check out Steve Earle the next time he's in town. Then go buy the new Sadies record. The see Dolorean when they play Iota with Damien Jurado and Richard Buckner. And check out Mindy Smith at the 9:30 Club.

These are all artists I've mentioned on this board. Where have you been?

Oh, let's leave Rhett be, trolling the troll is pointless.

What is the point on judging someones motives, probably we all have few minutes at work to spare and posting on a local board is entertaining.

We get a lot more traffic here than on the Fulks board, even if half of it is just me...

The Drive By Truckers probably are about 50 IQ points higher than Skynrd. Lyrically, they have Skynrd beat by a mile. Musically, what's wrong with Skynrd?

Mindy Smith is an ALT-country singer. Meaning she doesn't follow the Nashville hitmaking formula, and you're not going to hear her on your local mainstream country radio.

I'm not really familiar with Tragically Hip. I do have one on the singers solo albums (his first one)that I picked up for a buck. Haven't listened to it much...but I'd have to put it in the category of "if you stretched the definition of Americana you could include this".

BACK TO TOPIC!!!

Can i just say that last night, while i WASNT going to the show, i went to a friends house to watch the hockey game.

When i got in my girfriends car, she had it on the MIX 104.1 station (this irks me to no end, cause i make her countless CDs of good music) and what do i hear "Take Your Mama Out" by the Scissor Sisters.

   strange i thought.

But then, 3 1/2 hours later, i get in her car to go home, and change the CD and MIX 104.1 comes back on , to what song?  "Take Your Mama Out" by the Scissor Sisters!!

freaky. were they doing that cause of the show in DC? or are they already doomed to Mix station radio??!!!??

I thought the show was quite good, glad I went.  The energy and fun can't be denied....I'd say the influences were nearly all 70s, and very basic disco/funk (lots of Stevie Wonder, though I don't know how he's described).  The band, at least the lead male singer, was flaming, but not sure all their influences are.  Elton John, though....     ;)

Do I want to listen to this album in my car over and over?  Not so sure.  Hopefully a friend will have it and I'll give it a couple listens before I decide whether to buy it...at this point, I'm leaning towards no CD purchase, though I'd see them again if they came through town next year.

Wow so much going on with this ONE topic!!  Um, I would say it was a great show, but not too different from the first time I saw them at the 930 Club, earlier this year.

As for Z104 (Mix 104?)...I have heard Scissor Sisters played on mostly this genre of radio since I've also heard them on 92.5 FM and Mix 106.5  This, of course when I actually listen to the radio, which isn't much apart from online ( WOXY and Xfm.co.uk)

Speaking of Z104...if you look at their website their bands are fairly MORish (if I can use that term), but I wonder why they don't have Keane or Morrissey on there?  Plus, HFS is hosting the Keane gig at 930...do they even play Keane?!?

Finally, back to Scissor Sisters.  I guess you could say they have a 70's/80's thing going on.  I can hear Elton John/Bowie/BeeGees most strongly.
Are they a B-52's or Deee-Lite for this generation?  Maybe.  Hopefully their career lasts like the former and not the later.   :D

 Deee-lite, I'd say absolutely.

By the way, Bob Mould was beside me on line going in to the show.  He got double-carded at the door!  [No, I didn't speak to him; I've decided he deserves his space and already knows he's a musical genius and god....]

Sonick, you're pretty randy yourself today [no pun intended].  I don't think Indiekid has a problem with Deee-lite, but was pointing out that they didn't last all that long....  Ditto for me; I think they're very mucy like Deee-lite, but I wasnt' *wishing* them a short career....  Have all that same dressing up, made up names and being over the top/funky/way too cool for school in a cartoonish sort of way.

He was standing at the very back, in between the soundboard and the merch counter.  Didn't dance at all.  You'd be surprised, he looks awfully young.  Bright blue collared shirt.  He's so amazing...I know, a regular person, but so amazing.    :D

Only thing is, in Lenny's case, it may be true.    <img src="http://pages.prodigy.net/indianahawkeye/newpage12/1.gif" alt=" - " />

Yeah... the female lead singer reminds me of a chunky version of Sarah Jessicah Parker..

I'd give the sisters a good run at things...   They at least will have a big gay/british following... and lord knows whatever's chic in the gay community/england, becomes commercialized in a few years in the US.

I'm guessing that Mr. Kravitz thinks his balls are way too big for his pants in just about all settings and situations.  It's just that his wacktastic guitar moves in that commercial spring to mind first, since it's such ridiculous rock-star poses that I want to get sick.

 P.S. I hate Lenny Kravitz.

Yes, you're right. You didn't call me an asshole. And for that I give you credit. And for the record, I don't agree with that persons assessment. I do sometimes find you annoying (on the board, haven't met you in person), but i'm willing to bet also that you are a good friend and a lot of fun to those who don't find you annoying.

My point was that everyone does and says asshole things. Whether it's GGW signing up for another chatboard I'm on for the sole purpose of harassing me, or someone else pm'ing me with nasty comments about other board members...aint a one of us who are model citizens.

I live in blissful ignorance, which is fine.  I assume anyone who hates won't talk to me out "in the world," so what the hell.  Though I will say that PM sounds like it came from someone in your family.  You know, Rhett, I didn't call you an asshole, I said I didn't think GGW was one.  That's not very incendiary.  You really enjoy going off for the sake of it... Hey Sonick, I know Deee-lite were around for the better part of the mid 90s, but were they really that popular once the hype of the first album died down?  I know there's a big difference between mainstream 'popular' and music-lover 'popular' so I'm trying to be generous here.
No ill-will against the band and their legacy, but I recall going to many a music store and seeing copies of Infinity Within in the cut-out bins (which is where I got my copy!).

As far as Scissor Sisters lasting as long?  They could very well burn out if they have to do such energetic shows as often as they do.  Not sure how extensive the US tour is, but they've been gigging all over the UK recently.  I wish them the best and who knows...maybe down the road we'll see some collaboration between them and some Deee-liteful One?  I know they're said to be working with Kylie.    ;)

Cool, you saw them live?  Unfortunately I was a late bloomer and didn't go to a 'real' gig till I saw Blur at the Black Cat in 95...at the tender age of 20, hehe!  Up till that point I had to rely on seeing HFS type gigs for free, like the Greenberry Woods in College Park or Frente in DC, ahhh memories.    :)

Yeah, Target has some pretty fun ads, but I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that K Mart was using "That Great Love Sound" by The Raveonettes!  Much better then the remake of Jesus Jones "Right Here, Right Now".

American University right here in wonderful Washington DC, I think it was probably 1995, they played in an area right outside my dorm room window, the same place where Big Head Todd and the Monsters later played, legendary shows really

Did Bootsy tour with them?  I find it hard to believe they were awful if Bootsy was there.

my two cents (i was able to catch a good chunk of their set):

fun to watch and quite amusing for about ten minutes. i can't say they aren't good at what they do, but what the scissor sisters do is probably what i like least of all musical genres. i consider myself open-minded and i can get down with everything from metal to country to hip-hop to noise to free jazz, but i really can't do disco, and that's what they do. i wouldn't even call it funk, unless your version of funk is more earth, wind, and fire than funkadelic/parliament and graham central station.

i also agree with the above assessments that the scissor sisters are largely influenced by late '70s disco and pop, especially the bee gees and elton john. i don't really hear much bowie in there, not even "scary monsters"-era. DEFINITELY not "low"-era.

i have absolutely no problem with flaming gay performances or flamboyancy, but if you're going to be that unabashedly "out," then i ask to be challenged or provoked in some way, whether it be comically or conceptually or musically. the scissor sisters failed on all three counts for me and came off like the musical equivalent of "queer eye for the straight guy," simply reinforcing stereotypes and cliches.

perhaps i'm just missing the boat, since they are supposed to be about a fun show, but that doesn't do much for me. i found them to be long on performance and short on substance.
