Title: What does hamfisted writing mean?
Post by: thirsty moore on November 22, 2005, 03:49:00 pm
I've done an online dictionary search and have found that hamfisted means somewhat clumsy, unskilled.  However, I have read book reviews where it says the writer comes off as hamfisted, but the book is excellent.  This doesn't seem to add up.

Perhaps you just like clumsy, unskilled writers?

I can see where I mixed things up here.  The problem is in the review itself.  While the reviewer claims the book is good, he also mentions the writing is hamfisted.  No examples of books, just things I've noticed in the past.

I think it also has connotations of being unsubtle.
