I'm wondering if anyone's first concert was an act that is simply embarassing to admit to, even if it is anonymously on the Internet. I know I have mine.
-
Menudo at Constitution Hall
-
Milli Vanilli, Young MC and Seduction at Baltimore Arena (back when it was the Civic Center). What can I say, I was the only teenage boy who was surrounded by chicks. We went in a van, and I was the only dude, with 6 girls from school.
There I admitted it.
-
we've done this before, but it was awhile ago, Celeste has the most embarassing I think
mine was Def Leppard
-
Embarrassingly, my first concert was by a British artist. Although technically, the first band I saw were the openers, and I don't think they were British.
-
this is a funny topic, because most people i know haver AWFUL first shows.
Mine was Aerosmith and Guns N Roses at the Boston Garden in 1988. I know, those bands sound lame, but in 1988, Aerosmith just started thier comeback and were still rocking, and GNR just came out. The show is still, to this day, one of the most electrifying shows I've seen.
My girlfriends was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles though. does that beat Menudo?
-
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is hilarious, but I'm not sure that anything can compare to my first concert, when I was eight, mind you.
Michael Bolton
w/Celine Dion
My parents dragged me there, I swear...

have you ever been the same since?

I can honestly say that night changed my life. It was the night I finally found out what good music should be and it is not what I was hearing when Bolton sang 'Wind Beneath My Wings'. I still wake up at night, turn to my bird, and say "I had the Michael Bolton dream again.'

Yes, seeing U2 is pretty damn embarassing!

Barry Manilow - Pine Knob
The venue's in Michigan and my parents dragged me to it. All I remember is that he brought some chick on stage and was wearing white pants. I must have been four years old.
-
The J. Geils Band with my parents. No same in that. LOVE STINKS!
-
First concert Prince Purple Rain tour
Second concert U2 Unforgettable Fire tour
Neither one embarassing at all. The U2 show blew me away and taught me the power of rock. I can honestly say I can't really think of any I've been to that I'd be too embarassed about. Well, I'm slightly embarassed about seeing Billy Idol at the Pat Center in '86 or '87 so. I felt pretty lame.
*edit*
I just dug up the set list for this show...pretty cool. It was in April 1985:
11 O'clock Tick Tock, I Will Follow, Seconds, MLK, The Unforgettable Fire, Wire, Sunday Bloody Sunday, The Cry-> The Electric Co., A Sort Of Homecoming, Bad, October, New Year's Day, Pride (In The Name Of Love)
encores: Knocking On Heaven's Door, Gloria, 40

it was 1989 i believe. I went to that same show in Toronto. Made me a Skid Row fan for a year. :o
-
Wang Chung and the Cars at Merriweather 1983-ish.
Everybody had fun that night.
Everybody wang-chunged that night.
-
I thought the thread topic was most EMBARASSING first concert or concert experience
that doesn't mean "list your first concert" We've already done that lame thread before!
-
Tony Orlando without Dawn. I was 10. I was dragged to the show. And it was awful. He french-kissed random women in the audience. I was all grossed out.
-
C'mon Rhett...at least we're mentioning a band's name, not some cryptic statement like "it was a British artist"...

ok, you are right.
I can't really think of an embarassing concert though.
I was kind of embarassed to be at the HFStival a couple times though, especially the year Eminem was there.
-
Doesn't the fact that it was a British artist automatically make it an embarassment?
Alright then, it was Ozzy, with opening act Vandenberg (whose guitarist later went on to be the guitarist in Whitesnake).
Some night not even call that embarassing, but I do.
Still, it pales in comparsion to my wife's first concert.

Hmmm.. technically my first concert experience was at the Grand Old Opry. Little Jimmy Dickens and Bill Monroe were there. In fact, I got to shake Bill Monroe's hand at the local Shoneys afterwards. I've never seen my dad so in awe of someone.
But my first concert of my own free will was Bryan Adams and Mr. Big. 1992 I guess. That's embarassing.

my first show was a Lynryd Skynrd cover band. You can't get more embarrassing than that.
Oh wait, you can... my sister's first show was Air Supply. :D
-
Wow, that is so fucking cool! And you know I mean that sincerely.

lol. thats awful , "honestly" its just afwul.

My very first concert isn't as embarrassing as it is lame:
12/10/78 WPGC Toys for Tots Concert at the Capital Centre (Dr. Hook, Firefall, Pablo Cruise, Atlanta Rhythm Section)
I guess it is pretty embarassing to admit I used to listen to WPGC.
Some would consider my second concert more embarassing, but I don't:
7/7/79 - KISS at the Capital Centre - The Dynasty tour. They still had their make-up, but were a total mess.
-
i don't think my first concert even holds a candle to the teenage mutant ninja turtles but...my parent's dragged me to a willie nelson concert when i was 5 or 6. he played at the york fair in pennsylvania...i slept through the whole show but my parents woke me up for "mama, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys".
-
I am going to sound like a pretentious music geek when I tell you that my first concert was the Pixies, December 1990. Funny thing is that back then in my high school, it was so dreadfully uncool to listen to anything other than rap (Ice-T, NWA) or metal (Metallica, Megadeth). Everyone made fun of me for liking bands with names like the Pixies (which they fondly re-named the Fairies) and the Stone Roses. I didn't give a damn...for being a geek, I was still pretty fucking cool. :)
-
nothing wrong with admitting that you used to listen to WPGC... that makes you part of an elite community of peeps that actually grew up here.

Looking back on the thread name, i think i can state my most embarassing concert experience, right?
well, it was at the 930 club back in 1997 or so, and me and two friends went to see Outkast.
Apparently the two of them had been drinking heavily (or on some other drugs) and one girl passed out upstairs and the other accidentally walked into the men's room!!!
they both got kicked out and i had the whole 930 staff pissed off at me as i tried to get these two out of the club with me. and outkast hadnt even come on yet.
then i got to clean vomit from my car later that night. ugh.
-
I went to see Molly Hatchet and the Road Ducks at Jaxx last year.
The guitarist (and only original member) from Molly Hatchet dedicated a song to his cardiologist's brother, who was in the audience that night.
-
Every morning in middle school my bus driver would play that station. The DJ would always say "It's burnt toast and coffee time."

On the other hand, the above was my first concert not with parents.
The first concert ever was Merle Haggard at Painter's Mill. I think I was five. Great show, yet, watching him on the revolving stage made me dizzy.

Captain 20 and the Kroft Superstars. "Launch???? I SAID LUNCH!"
The ice cream man that used to come down our block would flash that little Captain 20/Vulcan hand signal and tell us he was Captain 20. At the time we thought he was really cool. Looking back, what a creepy guy.

197? - Foreman Field - ODU - Norfolk, VA.
CSNY - Lots of chemicals and courage in a bottle caused many interesting events that day. I never knew a hot pony miller tossed from the top level of a stadium to the sidewalk outside (where individuals were in various state of being taken into custody) would explode like that and cause so many people to scatter instantly.

late 80's: huey lewis and the news pittsburgh civic (now mellon) arena

Either Wayne Newton on the mall 7/4/83 (thank you James Watt!) which was terrible, or Pointer Sisters at Merriweather around the same time . . . and were actually pretty good . . .

This one may win the prize!
New york, new york, is everything they say
And no place that Iâ??d rather be
Where else can you do a half a million things
All at a quarter to three
When they palt their music, ooh that modern music
They like it with a lot of style
But tâ??s still that same old back beat rhythm
That really drives â??em wild
They say the heart of rock and roll is still beating
And from what Iâ??ve seen I believe â??em
Now the old boy may be barely breathing
But the heart of rock and roll is still beating
La, hollywood, and the sunset strip
Is something everyone should see
Neon lights and the pretty pretty girls
All dressed so scantily
When they play their music
That hard rock music
They like it with a lot of flash
But itâ??s still that same old back beat rhythm
That really kicks â??em in the
They say the heart of rock and roll is still beating
And from what Iâ??ve seen I believe â??em
Now the old boy may be barely breathing
But the heart of rock and roll is still beating
Dc, san antone and the liberty town, boston and baton rouge
Tulsa, austin, oklahoma city, seattle, san francisco, too
Everywhere thereâ??s music, real live music, bands with a million styles
But itâ??s still that some old rock and roll music
That really drives â??em wild

Would you believe Beatle-mania at Constitution Hall somewhere around 1980?

You forgot...
"t,t,t,t,t,t, They say the heart..."
It is when he stutters with style, like in the shitty video.
-
honestly can't remember my first concert, poppa bear was taking me to see all the jazz great in my formative years.
most embarassing concert experience there is tie.
The Cut The Crap tour
and
Robert Plant w/ Phil Collins on drums. embarassing because I went expecting other big stars to pop up like Pete Townsend. "I'm in the mood for a melody"
For the most embarassing momemt on stage... and it almost an arseing moment at that. in a literal case of "his balls being too big for his pants" the trousers of Pop Will Eat Itself split just below the crotch and he was showing a bit of the pink for a song or two, before they tried to tape up the hole with duct tape. Which didn't hold very long, so the roadie fetched a pair of striped pants which the lead singer pulled up on the outside of his trousers to cover up the hole. :D
-
Hairy balls.
-
Easily my most embarrasing concert experience was my first. My father took me to see Debbie Gibson at Merriweather Post for her "Out of the Blue" tour. To this day he does not let me live this down. Fortunately though, this concert experience is either balanced out or canceled out by my second concert experience, Sonic Youth's Goo tour at University of Maryland College Park. Red Kross opened. Whatever happened to Red Kross?
-

The dude was adding bass lines to White Stripes songs last year. I'm not sure if they are still up on the site anywhere.

this show in east lansing ended being newsworthy and it wasn't because of the concert... remind me to tell you the next time we cross paths.
-
My 1st embarassing concert moment happened while I was at community college. The school was holding it talent competition. I can tell you this; it was a good thing that Simon from American Idol wasn't in attendance. Some of the performances were good, but others were crap.
-
my first show was a power rangers "show" live, kinda like a play.
my first concer twas blink 182/greenday, and my first 930 show was papa roach.
i havent had an embarassing moment really but i remember at ozzfest when a drunk guy stole one of my french fries. that totally fucked me up for an hour. but boobs in the lawn made it better :)
-
Quiet Riot in 85. Pretty bitchin.
-
hanson. nissan pavillion. enough said.
-
Ok
MC Hammer (in the MC era).
Boyz 2 Men opened (I roll my eyes)
Blaisdell Auditorium
I was in 3rd grade, what can I say no one comes to Hawaii. It was for my birthday. I thought hea was the man. Of course I also had mother made baloon pants and a sleeveless t-shirt. I may be releaseing too much information.
I did get to see The Strokes though before they were everywhere. They were flying back from Japan to become giant first album media darlings. Great show, awesome vibe. No MC Hammer but there can be only one. Am I right? Anyone?
-
i've had to build up a lot of courage to admit this :( , but here goes:
Backstreet Boys at Merriweather (or Nissan?) with Aaron Carter opening.
I was invited by a friend, if that redeems me in any way.
-
My other experience after Milli Vanilli was Color Me Badd with Kriss Kross and MC Lyte. I honestly went to see MC Lyte...
It'll make ya...JUMP JUMP!
-
Was searching for a more-suited thread, but found this one immensely entertaining to read.
Do we have a thread about what your first concert at the 9:30 was? Mine was the Judybats, September 1993. Second night they played...and it was a fantastic show. I wasn't expecting much, but they really were a great live band.
-
Killing Joke at 9:30 around 1991, traveled from University of Delaware to see it
-
This mfer said "no same" come on man!
My first club show was JSBX a few weeks after the current location opened. Took the metro, and then at the gas station that used to be right at the intersection there, decided to walk left instead of right. Finally walked back and asked directions and the guy at the station just pointed across the street.
The J. Geils Band with my parents. No same in that. LOVE STINKS!
