These are the bands that will battling the last band standing contest in order to open the Chili Cook-Off. Say what you will about the DC cook-off, but for a band it's good exposure..at least a stage where all your gear fits..
- Junk Food: "voted DC's #1 cover band", they want an f-ing cover band! Their website had them cover "Time After Time" by C. Lauper for christ's
sake.
- Victory Twin: "Influences range from Sugarcult & SR-71 to classics such as Van Halen and Bon Jovi." The single on their site is called "Bethlehem Steal." The first line of lyrics are "Maryland state line coming down the
grapevine, I don't want to stay but I don't want to go home." not joking.....
- LSS: The best of Glen Burnie, MD. What more can I say....
- Fourth Element: Hoobastank meets Rusted Root... geez. complete shite.
- Gold Mind Squad: Good Charlotte clones, from the website: "GMS broke the attendance record @ Londontown Hall in Edgewater, MD." WOW!
- Lionize: Sublime wanna-bees, but like 5 years too late.
- 33 West: F-ing crap sounds like Queensryche with a reggae twist. Not making this up.
- Falls Church: non-descript sucking. Hoobastank seems to be the flavor of the day.
- Spectre: could not find
- VooDoo Blue: "In the Up-N-Comers section of the January 2001 issue of Teen Beat magazine," I guess they wouldn't be teen beat anymore....
- The Speaks: who knows
- Evenout: got tired of reading this crap.
WHO ARE THESE BANDS AND WHO THE HELL LIKES THEM!!! One interesting thing,
they seem to be from a totally different planet. Not one of the bands has played Black Cat, DC9, Velvet, etc. Also, many are from Baltimore, but no one has played Ottobar, Talking Head, etc. I guess this bizzarro world is completely over my head....
(taken from a friend's rant)
-
I bet they have all played the great Clarendon Ballroom.
-
Well, not to try to bring down Fico's arguement at all, cause I agree with him, but The Speaks are from arl. and have been around a bit. I know they played DC9 and also State theatre and live on penn last year I believe. They were supposed to play again this year too. Voodoo Blue won the spot to open the HFStival this year. Evenout have also been around, and I think may have somehow opened for some Worrystones/Fighting Gravity crap show at 930 before.
I was shocked I didn't recognize anymore than that however. Well, except for Gold Mine Squad, whom Fico's comment already took care of.
It really is incredibly sad. DC101 local licks play better music than this group of nobodies. There had to be better bands than this. Assuming Cartel submitted, I can name two right of the bat better than this crew.
Apparently Frat Rock is all that matters in DC. Pathetic.
-
Well, not to try to bring down Fico's argument anymore, but two minutes of searching shows that most of these bands have played Recher and Fletchers, a couple have played HFStivals, and one of them - Evenout - has played the 9:30, Merriweather, and Nissan.
Your friend should do a little more fact checking....

i think you need to stop fact checking so damn much. do you have any human thought? or do you just spout out facts.
how many of those bands have "headlined" any of those places. we should all know by now that opening bands, especially local ones, are not chosen on talent or popularity for the most part.
-

And they qualified as one of the Top 50 bands to compete and then play at the American Music Awards (some award show).
note: My factoid doesn't claim opinion either way on these bands.
-
I'm assuming that a lot of those bands are with some agency that organizers for events like the Chili Cookoff go to.
-
Yes, Evenout did play 9:30 club supporting Third Eye Blind, Sister Hazel, and at a Budweiser True Music Event. Yes, the slot and venue are good, but the music is rubbish. So depressing...
If someone were even to mention those names on this board, they would be torn to pieces.

Sonick has a point..GGW is the king of the fact check but someone has to keep the world honest, right? :D

WHO ARE THESE BANDS AND WHO THE HELL LIKES THEM!!!
What we got are bunch of bands that played at either TT Reynolds, Fletchers (Noise In The Basement Live), Recher Threatre, HFStival, opened for a national recording act or all the above.
Evenout, Voodoo Blue and Gold Mine Squad opened for national acts at the 930 Club. The Speaks and 33 West played at the Battle of the Imports 2 months ago at MIR. That's what I know from these groups.
-
why don't they get anyone who plays Jaxx?
-
After seeing this band open for Old 97's at live in penn, i can speak for them. They were one of the worst bands I've ever seen. Totally cop their whole sound from STP and bands of that ilk.

Gold Mine Squad blows. I saw them open up for somebody at the Recher. They are horrible. It is pretty bad when a band makes Good Charlotte seem tolerable.
Evenout blows too. Saw them open up for Fuel at Merriweather sessions this summer. They have a crew of chicks (about 8, and one is dating or married to lead singer) that go to all of their shows and that makes up their fanbase. Then I was Downtown Baltimore walking around and realized there was a Power Plant Live occurring that night. So I grabbed a bite and figured the show was free and decided to stick around. Well it ended up being Evenout (this was after seeing them at MPP) and there was about 15 people in the audience (no shit) and 8 of them were the chicks!

Who really gives a rat's ass who plays at the DC101 festival?!? Maybe you've never heard the station before. Last time I checked, it was run-of-the-mill, top-40 alternative crap. The people who listen, the DC101 fans, will be people who enjoy run-of-the-mill, top-40 alternative crap. So, I'm guessing, by the descriptions at the top of this thread, that this festival has been concocted to perfection for the people who enjoy DC101. If this festival was lined up with a half dozen indie/underground critical darlings, it would not only make no sense whatsoever, but it would be insulting to the fans that support the station. If you're the kind of person who enjoys something a bit more original or interesting, this festival doesn't show up on your radar.

Is that the Greaseman? Haven't seen him around in ages. I have a quick story about that.
If it hasn't been figured out yet, I'm an elem. school art teacher. The other day I had a new student to my school bring in some smocks. One just happened to be a DC101 t-shirt from ages ago. It had the old logo with the lightning bolts on the front. And on the back was Greaseman's signature in Sharpie...

You have my condolences.
I've been there. Sort of. I paid my dues in both elementary and middle school art classrooms. Well, that was when I actually had a classroom. I was in the worst of the Baltimore Shitty ghettos; much less pay; no supplies; no cooperation from any angle; constant assults on me, physically, verbally, mentally and emotionally; a completely ineffective union who ended up working against us; and a whole lot more other crap that you just couldn't even imagine in your worst nightmares. At least, that nightmare for me is over and done with forever and ever. ;)
-
i wish you were my art teacher...my art teacher was mean and always sent me to time out then gave me an N because i didn't do the work.( i was in fuckin time out!)
did you always ask your students to bring in paper towel rolls and stuff? did you tell them they could ask their neighbors and relatives?

I don't work in Balt., but I can say that all of those things have happened to me (except the classroom, I do have my own) but not by kids, by adults, i.e. parents, administration, board of ed., etc. And to boot, by wife and I are both teachers and can't afford a house in our district. What a way to say thanks, huh? If you are not teaching anymore, what do you do? I'd love ideas. It is a pretty narrow field with both a B.S. and M.A. in Art Education.

I have a baseball rule, three strikes-you're out (in this case time out). You fuck up three times, see ya! Normally I don't have that much trouble.
I don't ask for paper towel rolls and stuff. The germ factor is just a little too frightening for me, when some booger picker brings in TP rolls with one sheet left. My mind starts to wander, not a happy place! The only thing I ask for are smocks and yogurt cups with lids for paint.

LOLOL. This is a first. Flawd and I confused as being the same person.
I, more or less, told Baltimore Shitty to shove it up their ass and quit. Now I'm an activities coordinator in a very large nursing home, even though they don't call them that now. :D They are a blast!! I'm paid to play with and host parties for the demented. I totally love the job and am very good at it but am looking for something completely different now. Not that I want to because I don't at all but have no choice. This job pays much less than half what I was making teaching, which was even less than you make in a better county, and I'm single so have that much less money in my household with absolutely no tax breaks. Not even allowed to claim Head of Household. Fuckers. Also, we were sort of told that we won't be receiving raises so that they can give the raises to the already highly paid nurses. Typical! So, after my rental increase, in real pay, that's more like a pay cut.
Sorry, but I have absolutely no career advise that I can share with you other than to get the Hell out of teaching asap!!! I've got a BFA from the Maryland Institute of Art, an MLA from Johns Hopkins and the equivalant of a 2nd Masters, mostly in waste of time Education classes and can't find anything else to save my life. And as you know, if I don't keep taking classes, I'll lose my certification which means that I can't teach in a government run school anymore, which is the only damn thing it's good for. Ironically, without that, they would fire me and replace me with a slightly cheaper teacher without a certification who then must work their ass off working on obtaining one. In fact, a couple years ago, while job hunting, I found out that many of the Teach For America people who have no certifications or any Education classes or teaching experience were actually being paid MORE than many teachers in the same schools who had certifications and Education degrees!!! How unfair and twisted is that!? Since I've quit, I've decided to tell the State to fuck off too by refusing to keep up that waste of time piece of paper. I've figured out that in the long run, it's nothing but a scam to keep tons of money going into the colleges at our expense. The other irony, many other employers who fall for many of the myths of what is happening in Education won't hire us because they think we can't do anything but teach yet are the very same ones who expect teachers to do anything and everything in the classroom on top of trying to teach.
You are far from the only teacher in any system who has been reprimanded for speaking the truth about how dysfuntional the school systems are. I've known of several teachers who got in trouble for saying almost nothing. Can't believe that they never got on my case about all that I would say. Probably only because it wasn't to the media. Fuck them! They can't fire me now so I'll say whatever I want to say about them and it's all, sadly, the God's truth! Anyone who doesn't believe me needs to spend some time in a real classroom in the very same capacity as any real teacher instead of some office in a paper castle of illusion or in front of the big propaganda run boob tube.
You may have very recently read about some principal in a Baltimore Shitty school who was just fired because he graduated students who had failed some tests, or something like that. (I've only barely kept up with it.) Well, as they say, he just got caught. They've been doing that sort of stuff for years and years. It's also quite common for the administration to change report card grades that teacher's labored over so that they could make the school look better. The reason they do that is so that the numbers look better for the school. And they do that because their bosses and the dumb-ass politicians only send money to schools with numbers they like, if you catch my drift. I bet they do that crap in your schools too. Of course, they prefer that the public continue the wording of the 'teachers' pass the students on when it is really the 'administrators' and other bosses, often via policy, who are really the ones passing the undeserved on.

Thanks for the ribbing guys. Sometimes it's hard to tell who is being an ass in here, and who is just joking. In my limited experience here, I've dealt with both.
I'll definitely stay away from Baltimore, except for show and ballgames.
I don't think Flawd ever responded to the question about his current employment either.

I don't mind the kids who have lower skills than others. I just expect them to give as much effort and listen just as much as everyone else.

Herndon. i don't work yet. but soon. i got a 5 (highest score) on my ap world hist. test last year and i am continueing my A, B+, and B grades as a junior. I'm probably the only kid who hasn't been to a party, made out or got wasted yet.
