always the best comeback in the book. I actually liked your list. might have put a few higher and other lower on the list.
Bummer about the Bucs, Hoya. I was at the game. There are many reasons why we should have won that game. Most of all that damn missed field goal.

Looks to me like there were a lot of semi-OK and full-on crappy records released this year. Looking back to years like 1984 or even 2000 I've got to say that it was a disappointing year.
-
I'll bet you were listening to Madonna in 1984. Weren't you like 9 or something?

In 1984 I was 9 indeed...pretty scary that you know that. At age 9 I was listening to what I call mainstream new wave. The Police, The Cars, and popular Clash stuff (think Combat Rock). At age 10 I made the switch over to the British stuff like New Order, Depeche Mode, the Smiths, the Ramones, etc. Pretty much everything that was on Sire Records. But in the later 80's and early 90's, I discovered all the great records released at that time...Husker Du, the Replacements, the Minutemen, etc.

I agree. There were a lot of 7.8 Z's released this year and not many 9.0+
My favorites, in relatively random order:
Sleater-Kinney -- The Woods
The Decemberists -- Picaresque
Dead Meadow -- Feathers
Mountain Goats -- Sunset Tree
Bloc Party -- Silent Alarm
Dungen -- Ta Det Lungt
Shout Out Louds -- Howl Howl Gaff Gaff
Constantines -- Tournament of Hearts
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah -- S/T
BRMC -- Howl
Caesars -- Paper Tigers
The National -- Alligator

Just a lucky guess. Maybe you had referenced your age at one time and it was in the back of my head. Don't worry, I'm not keeping a stalker file on you. Or anybody else.
Born in the USA was my favorite album of 1984, at least at that time. I didn't pay much attention to music when I was in high school.

i let out a guttural yelp when that FG faded right, it brought back some really really bad memories of "automatica" ... we needed that game and should have won it, luckily a lot of other NFC wild-card contenders lost this week

Putting an album on your list that you haven't even bought yet? Sounds pretty damn sketchy to me.

this is a really fantastic record, all the way through, and it's one of the rare ones (that i can remember off the top of my head, at least) where the second half is stronger and catchier than the first ... on a lot of records you kind of just get used to the sound and the hooks and by the second half you get a little bored ... in this one, the whole thing just grows on you

let me rephrase:
i am guessing that (once i buy it and digest it) i will like it and it will probably be on my "best of the year" list ... i'm basing that on their previous albums and what i've read about this one ... but maybe i'll hate it or not get into it, i dunno
but i do know that everyone here agrees that they're fantastic live, right rhett?
-
Not to be contrary, but I though the first half was great and the second have went downhill. I think Bags agreed with me.

i'll admit i haven't listened to even a fourth of your original list, but some possible nods to the following (at least in your honorable mention set, if not atop the heap):
kraftwerk-minimum/maximum live set
swervedriver comp-juggernaut rides
the new eno cd-another day on earth
stones-a bigger bang
rtx-transmaniacon (tailend of 2004)
x-live in LA
but thanx for the daunting list of stuff i should at least try to track down and hear a song or two from...where to begin?!
-
I liked these records quite a bit...
Dead Meadow -- Feathers
Bloc Party -- Silent Alarm
Shout Out Louds -- Howl Howl Gaff Gaff
Constantines -- Tournament of Hearts
I also really enjoyed Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary, the live Queens of the Stone Age - Over the Years and through the woods, Beck - Guero, and Frances the Mute by the Mars Volta. And I can't stop listening to the new Living Things record Ahead of the Lions. Just a few off the top of my head.
-
i'll admit i haven't listened to even a fourth of your original list,

a little bit of all of that ... i'd say i bought about 15 of those in CD format (maybe more?), got a bunch more (15? 20?) via emusic, maybe 10 promos, and the rest are stolen

Not ready to make a list yet, but I'd throw The Dead 60's on there and De Novo Dahl, but you're all probably just deferring that one to Kosmo.
-
1. The National: Alligator
I have tried and tried and tried with this album I do not see the greatness that most other people ascribe to it....I much prefer Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers

I think that both Cold Roses and Jacksonville are strong releases...a bit of a return to form. Heartbreaker is one of my favorite albums ever.
I assume that many people on this board can't stand him.

nope, don't have either of those, despite kosmo's constant harping about DND

the Lindsay Lohan album comes out next week, this list is far too early!
-
Damn, you listen to some shitty music!

I would agree with the good but not great assessments of 2005 - there were quite a few albums I liked but not many that I loved.
I managed to buy/borrow about 70 CDs which is definitely the most I have ever listened to in a given year
It was quite difficult to assemble a top 10 list - there are quite a few albums not in the top 10 that have some stellar tracks and some less than stellar tracks
anyway, Top 10, more or less in order
1 Andrew Bird
2 The New Pornographers
3 Josh Rouse
4 The Go Betweens
5 Brendan Benson
6 Teenage Fanclub
7 The Decemberists
8 Sleater Kinney
9 The Hold Steady
10 Sufjan Stevens
other stuff I liked but were less consistent as albums
The Frames
Doves
The Wedding Present
50 Foot Wave
Ed Harcourt - this is a potential top 10 album
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - excellent B-Sides and rarities comp
My Morning Jacket
Franz Ferdinand
Archer Prewitt
Low
The House of Love
Elbow - some amazing songs, others just kinda slide by
Clem Snide
Okkervil River
Shout out Louds
Of Montreal
John Doe
Paul Weller - mixes the sublime with the (almost) ridiculous
Radar Bros
Bloc Party - another potential top 10 album
-
The best record in my opinion was the Sleater Kinney one. Their San Francisco show was mind-blowing.
-
Basically in order:
Arctic Monkeys - downloaded album
Ladytron "Witching Hour"
Sufjan Stevens "Illinois"
Shout Out Louds "How Howl Gaff Gaff"
Antony & the Johnsons "I am a Bird Now"
Kasabian
New Pornographers "Twin Cinema"
My Morning Jacket "Z"
Sleater-Kinney "The Woods"
Raveonettes "Pretty in Black"
Bottom 20:
Goldfrapp "Supernature"
LCD Soundsystem
Franz Ferdinand "You Could Have It..."
Black Mountain
Gorillaz "Demon Days"
Hard-Fi "Stars of CCTV"
David Bowie "Stage reissue"
Dungen "Ta Det Lungt"
Babyshambles "Down in Albion"
Maximo Park "A Certain Trigger"

Indeed it may hath.
What can I say, it kind of rocks and the songs are mostly very good. Her voice is still god-hell-awful and they're not nearly as good as they think they are, but their playing is really tight and Janet sure can beat those drums.

As noted by Brennser several records this year that represent efforts not considered the best work by some favorite artists. I call it the XTC effect... I was a bit disappointed by new XTC records in the past because they were never quite as good as previous efforts, but often a listen to those records a few years later and one realizes it a very worthy record and quickly becomes a favorite.
because i'm entirely to lazy at the moment to post links, checkout my myspace page to hear clips from many of listed acts. http://www.myspace.com/kosmovinyl (http://www.myspace.com/kosmovinyl)
Honorable mentions, and favorite reissues under developement...
-
Couple thoughts... not a banner year from my perspective, but... My favs were Franz and Bloc Party. I was never a big fan of Franz's first effort, but this one sticks with me. Another worth mentioning is Death Cab. This album goes down really smooth...just a very relaxing ear candy album.... outside of that, my wife had our second kid, so haven't had time to hear a whole lot this year.
-
The original list in this thread is most stereotypical indie group of albums I've ever seen in my life.

Holy crap, we had the same musical trajectory pretty much during the same years, but I was in HIGH SCHOOL and COLLEGE during that time. I cannot imagine being 9, listening to the Police and the Cars and then 'progressing' to British alternative at 10. ;) Amazing, bearman.

Do you buy most of your music at Whole Foods?

At least popmatters is honest. Pitchfork's lip service to top 40 hip hop is tiring.

hey, that amadou & mariam album is actually pretty damn good.
did paste do a top 50 list? because i feel like the amazon list looks like what a paste list would look like.
-
I do foresee my musical taste growing more in that direction moreso than for what the indie rock community is serving up. The Amazon list strikes a nice inclusive balance between genres, rather than separating them ala popmatters.

compiled by Amazon editors to me much more interesting than Pitchdork or (only indie)Popmatters.
Because you are such a big fan of Bollywood soundtracks, Afro-rock, and World music?
Do you buy most of your music at Whole Foods? [/b]
-
And the Kronos Quartet's Bollywood record does sound interesting.
One album the Amazon list turned me onto was Ry Cooder's Chavez Ravine. Good stuff. Will have to pick that one up.

Wow. I think the new album is good, but I don't know if I would give it that good of a rating.

What exactly is "the shit that Rhett listens to"? No doubt you don't have a clue what I listen to.
Earlier this year, I compiled a list of my 40 favorite albums from 1/2002-9/2005. I'll bet you can't name ten of the albums on this list, and I'll give you all day and as many guesses as you wish.

Honestly I don't understand all the fawning over most of what is topping these lists, they are quite frankly uncompelling listens to me. M.I.A., The Go Team, CYHSY, etc. And the lists contain the obvious, records from artists and labels that can afford to send out mass quanities for review and have publistists, etc. At least the Entertainment Weekly critic in the past had the balls to include the Stew records on his end of year lists when everyone was ignoring him.
-
kosmo - I agree there's few surprises, and those few examples smack of showmanship ("this'll stick in their craw!") or forced inclusiveness ("we love The Game"). The metacritic list reduces that cuz rogue reviewers can't influence it much, but it does show off a herd mentality.
It's a tough call. Most people don't listen to a really wide variety of music (myself included; my top ten doesn't include anything that hasn't already been mentioned). Music critics are paid to listen widely, but still largely favor the same stuff.
Are year-end lists supposed to dredge up unheralded albums? Take into account "important" or albums few enjoy listening to (I'm looking at you, Lightning Bolt)?
I dunno, I just likes what I likes. Also, I'm bored.
-
Hummm...basically based only on play counts through iTunes this is what I have since I can't comment on albums I don't own. Not sure about the addition of compilations, but included some anyway for merit.
1. Bebel Gilberto Remixed - Bebel Gilberto
2. Brazilian Girls - Brazilian Girls
3. '64-'95 - Lemon Jelly
4. Frances the Mute - The Mars Volta
5. Guero - Beck
6. Coco Do Mundo - Electro Coco
7. Demon Days - Gorillaz
8. Help: A Day In The Life Of - Various Artists
9. Late Registration - Kaye West
10. Plans - Death Cab For Cutie
11. Quiet Letters - Bliss
12. Silent Alarm - Block Party
13. Stand Up - DMB
14. The Antidote - Morcheeba (or what's left of them)
15. The Cosmic Game - Thievery Corporation
16. The Craft - Blackalicious
17. Witching Hour - Ladytron
18. X&Y - Coldplay
19. Verve Remix 3 - Various Artists
20. Songs - Willie Nelson
-
i keep forgetting about the Brazilian Girls and it should actually replace the Thievery Corporation CD on my list as they out did TC at their own game...

Stew...you mean the big fat black dude? I have one of him albums I bought for a dollar. You can have it next time I see you.

I like CYHSY, and Go Team is OK, but not deserving of being on a top __ of 2005 list. M.I.A., though, is really overrated crap, second most overrated of 2005 behind Kanye West.

no pass along to someone else who has good taste in music and isn't hung up on the race and/or weight of the artist.

I don't think I know anybody that would like the terrible album that I have. My wife knew nothing of his race or weight, and she absolutely hated it when I played it for her.

yeah nobody will like the Stew records, guess those windbags over at alllmusic don't know anything about music... two four star reviews and one four and half star review. don't bother with the Anthony and the Johnsons CDs either...
-
The allmusic reviews were what inspired me to blindly take a chance on him and part with $1.00. I guess my taste isn't always in line with the critics.
I've heard enough A+Johnsons to know that I wouldn't like that either.
But I suppose music is like ice cream, everyone has different tastes.

Isn't it funny that we haven't seen lists from the two posters who are so vocal in their contempt of other's opinions?
-
Would one of them be me? I never make up my "Best of year xxxx" until January 1 or later of year xxxx+1.
There are still a handful of albums I'd like to pick up before finalizing a list, but don't know how soon I'll get to them.
And inevitably, I often don't pick up on an album until the next year. Case in point, the last Devotchka record. Without a doubt my favorite 2004 release, but I only bought in in October 2005.
Who would the other complainer be, Guiny?

Do you mean me? I haven't put alot of thought into my list of yet. I can tell you what won't be on there: Sufjan, Kanye, New Pornographers, MIA. Give me a while.

3 of the top 100 Amazon picks
0 of the top 50 popmatters picks
0 of the top 50 pitchfork picks

Here's 25 of the top of my head. I don't have my list of everything I bought, so it might change.

the fall peel sessions box and dylan's bootleg series volume 7 were better than all of the above. the dirtbombs comp "if you don't already have a look" is crazy good as well. the children of nuggets box and the girl group box (both on rhino) are pretty excellent listens, as well.
-
Actually forget mine, I left off Kid606, Alex Smoke, and a few others that should be on there. And the bottom half needs rejuggled. Wolf Parade needs to slide down a few when I really think about it.
-
And to think that I had already committed them to memory for tomorrow's "Wednedsday fun" thread.

KIX BROOKS
Brooks & Dunn
Latest release: "Hillilly Deluxe" (Arista Nashville)
<img src="http://http://www.billboard.com/billboard/photos/art/b/brooks_and_dunn_03l.gif" alt=" - " />
1. Sheryl Crow, "Wildflower" (A&M/Interscope). Can't believe how hard she's trying to make it look like her and Lance. She's crazy about me!
2. Alicia Keys, "Unplugged" (J). Like her better this way, when I'm moody. She's got a neat voice, better without production for my money.
3. Nickelback, "All the Right Reasons" (Roadrunner). My kind of rock, actually find some melody in there!
4. Black Eyed Peas, "Monkey Business" (A&M/Interscope). Tons of fun, unpredictable, energy to run to.
5. Green Day, "American Idiot" (Reprise). There's a reason these guys are in stadiums -- the gun is always cocked here. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" feels like it could explode at any minute and they've defined a look and vibe of their own since they first came out.
6. Faith Hill, "Fireflies" (Warner Bros.). Always fun to see an old friend do good. When you wait as long as she did, whether your having babies or not, there's always a great pressure to do something superhuman. She did something honest and good. I think that's better.
7. Santana, "All That I Am" (Aristsa). Hell yeah! Bring it. Don't know what they're saying half the time, but who cares. Love him, always have. Great guest cut with Los Lonely Boys kills me.
8. Keith Urban, "Be Here" (Capitol). Think he's the most talented guy we got in country music. Wish it was me, but it's not. I could practice guitar all day every day and not play half that good.
9. Coldplay, "X&Y" (Capitol). Rock with some sense to it. Fun in the car.
10. Beck, "Guero" (Interscope). Though not my favorite Beck album, I like it a lot. He's my favorite "new" rock guy.

Apparently, todays issues is not yet available online. They had two editors pick top ten lists, as well as a separate hip hop list, a worst of, and a best of the rest (comps, live albums, etc). They also had a small section of reader picks, including mine, with small blurbs.
I think they pretty much destroyed their cred when one of the editors chose Fall Out Boy as his best album of the year.

Countrypolitan ?? an outgrowth of the Nashville sound of the '50s ?? is among the most commercially-oriented genres of country music. The Nashville sound emerged in the '50s as a way to bring country music to a broad pop audience. The movement was led by Chet Atkins, who was the head of RCA Records' country division. Atkins designed a smooth, commercial sound that relied on country song structures but abandoned all of the hillbilly and honky tonk instrumentation. He hired session musicians and coordinated pop-oriented, jazz-tinged productions. Similarly, Owen Bradley created productions ?? most notably with Patsy Cline ?? that featured sophisticated productions and smooth, textured instrumentation. Eventually, most records from Nashville featured this style of production and the Nashville sound began to incorporate strings and vocal choirs. In the late '60s, the Nashville sound metamorphosed into countrypolitan, which emphasized these kinds of pop production flourishes. Featuring layers of keyboards, guitars, strings, and vocals, countrypolitan records were designed to cross over to pop radio and they frequently did. The sound dominated the country charts in the '70s and stayed popular until the early '80s.

That doesn't mean I like the station. Rhett has 10,000 posts here, and has he even attended a show at the club in 2005? It's not as though I discuss DC radio or what's going on with the radio station. I don't see what difference it makes which board's off-topic section I post in.

I attended two shows at the 9:30 Club in 2005: Old 97's with Bobby Bare Jr, and the Decemberists. There were no venues where I attended more than two shows in 2005.

OK, I stand corrected, but I believe you made a post about how you find yourself attending less and less shows at the 9:30 club every year. Does that mean you shouldn't post here? Not if we discuss things other then the 9:30 Club.
I just find it bewildering that anytime I say anything someone doesn't like, their immediate response is, "you post on hfstival.com," as though mere membership to another messageboard discredits anything I have to say. I do that well enough by myself, thank you very much.

My my....We're a little testy today. Did your mom forget to refill your Ritalin prescription?
If someone posts thirty-five thousand times to the Star Trek message board, it's a safe bet that they like Star Trek.
If a person posts thirty-five thousand messages on the Star Trek message board and doesn't like Star Trek, doesn't watch Star Trek, and doesn't like anything related to Star Trek, well -- perhaps that's an indication of deeper problems.

So when did you graduate from being an HFS slave to being a pitchfork slave? Or would you say you're more of an NME slave? :D

Pitchfork by far. I like the occasional NME hyped band, but 85% of the Babyshambles, etc. crap they hype is garbage. And I disliked several of Pitchfork's biggest raves of the year (Sufjan, Decemberists, etc).

I can see your point. When I registered on that board, I didn't know of this board. I was looking for the HFStival lineup one year (being in Richmond we don't get word of it except on internet) and found that site. And it had/has an active base of DC-area people discussing music. So I signed up for that. As I said, most of my posts are in off-topic or local shows, and the musical tastes of the active posters on that board aren't much different from these here. Musically I do fall more in line with what is going on here, but it's just a very slow board, not alot of people post. I don't see why I can't post on both without it being a problem.

Entertainly Weekly's critics top tens... Not quite sure what to make of David Browne's inclusion of Caesars "Paper Tigers" a CD which was pretty forgettable even if it was in his words not another Coldplay knockoff. Much better alternatives out there than the Caesars...

The five worst cds and boy does that Ozzy CD sound painful...
1) Big & Rich Comin' to Your City (Warner Bros.)
These self-proclaimed Nashville wild men were onto something with their strapping first album, which only makes this wretched-excess indulgence all the more shocking. Everything they touch ?? Southern rock, white rap, Dixie metal, modern bluegrass ?? is reduced to a grotesque freak show. We never really needed Hee Haw in the first place; we don't need a ''hip'' version of it in 2005, either.
2) Ozzy Osbourne Under Cover (Epic)
For years, he's used his whiny, corroded voice to destroy his own songs, and now he decides to do the same to classic-rock standards like ''Sunshine of Your Love'' and ''In My Life.'' At least Crazy Frog's album of remakes was a joke.
3) Jason Mraz Mr. A??Z (Atlantic)
It's hard to say which part of this wet-noodle jam-band folkie's second album is most irritating: the song that announces what clever, witty singles he can write; the bit where he attempts street talk; or the smarm-merchant ballads. As his cuddly voice and image suggest, he may be a puppy, but not one you'd want to adopt.
4) Mike Jones Who Is Mike Jones? (Asylum)
Quick answer: bafflingly popular rapper who thinks ''Mike Jones, Mike Jones!'' constitutes clever flow and whose grueling, tiresome beats and ho homages only detract from Houston's flourishing hip-hop scene.
5) The Bravery The Bravery (Island)
Bands eager to relive the '80s were everywhere this year: Kaiser Chiefs (self-deprecating party boys), Bloc Party (proficient Gang of Four revivalists), Bright Eyes (an earnest but flat synth-pop droner on Digital Ash in a Digital Urn). The Bravery's homage to the worst, dreariest sides of the Cure, Depeche Mode, and Thompson Twins, however, was the most grating and pointless.

I don't know how BEST this is, but I find it rather amazing that Stan Ridgway (http://www.stanridgway.com/) is still managing to put out VERY -Listenable new material in 2005.

So can anyone whose actually heard it give constructive critism of the Kanye West record? Something other than it blows Mountain Goats.... Is it one of those well done guilty pleasure/party records or just over hyped sewage. Just curious...

What no Coltrane & Monk recorded in 1957 at Carnegie Hall? Surely some music snob would have included this on your list, as it was only released for the first time after the tape was recently discovered. Best record of year hands down appartently...

Let's not forget you could have contributed to the list. Hardly an abortion, still better than Sufjan being number one, like every other list out there.

Well, I'll grant you Sufjan isn't all it's made out to be (hell, read my review) but I at least kept that CD instead of selling it back.
Also, I received no email about voting for this.
Also also, I literally got that Alog CD (that supposedly was sent to me in November) yesterday so that's why you got no review, in case you care.
-
All in all, I think it's a pretty decent list. But that's just because I think the Decemberists and Sleater Kinney put out two of the very few great albums in 2005.
My only complaint is the glaring omission of Dead Meadow.
-
I think it is a great list.
Possibly because there are so many on there that I have not heard. Then again, if the subpar Decemberists album can make #2, I probably have not missed much.
-
It had one of my top 12, so it's a better list than popmatters or pitchdork.

it's a very good hip-hop album with enough adventurous quality that it makes mainstream music fans who are kind of afraid of underground/backpack hip-hop think that they're listening to "artistic" music (much like outkast) ... it has some fantastic productions, some pretty good flows (not great), but it blows radio mainstream shit like mike jones and young jeezy out of the water
that said, everyone here should pick up danger doom, it's a great, hilarious album ... best hip-hop album of the year

I'm suprised the Gogol Bordello isn't getting more nods, just downloaded the record and it has everything that all those new "punk" bands lack. Attitude to burn on the top of a band on verge of total musical choas. I can sense why this bands show could be amazing...

I particularly like your writeups which are not incidentally just snippets from the reviews.

It is a good list - includes some nice albums that were overlooked by alot of others, e.g., Radar Bros - I think it shows the growth of bigyawn as a site that they were able to cover so much ground during the year

I love listening to this record for about 10 minutes or so. Then it gets a little samey and I'm thinking, what next. Would love to see them live though. I could see it being thundrous.
I really like the songs on Kanye's 2nd record but for some reason, have only listened to it twice maybe. Same thing happened with the first one. I like it in theory but am never moved to put it on.

Ah a bit like the Snow Patrol record last year for me... Maybe if I'm feeling inspired it will be a pick from yourmusic or get it really cheaped used a couple years down the road.
Personally several young bands especially some of the British ones released full lenghts albums that would have been better trimmed down to EPs. Kaiser Chiefs, Maximo Park, Dead 60s, and Magic Numbers all show real promise but need to more time to develop their sound and songwriting skills. Many young American bands appear to have developed the mall attitude of needing to come off as all the other bands around them.
In the past up and coming bands like the Beatles and Rolling Stones filled out early releases with covers. Nowadays you get instead of covers the cut and paste method of songwriting which results in songs that sort of sound like something from the past. i.e. There is a bassline on the Dead 60s that is directly lifted from "Oh Shit" by the Buzzcocks.
I doubt in the current crop of up and comers you'll see the same kind of intertwined band family trees that was found in the past, when the life span of one of the lucky groups was a single or two not an album. In the 70s a group like the Kaiser Chiefs would have been like Sweet working with specific hitmakers like Chapman and Chin. In this day and age of anything with a pulse being signed, would Led Zeppelin been signed as a band today? Page was already 24 and an established studio musician, by todays standards he might have been considered over the hill already.
Bottom line to much attention these days is focused on the Artists and not it's Repertoire, in part fueled by the constant search for the next big thing or something which can be pro-tooled to sound talented.

I was excited to see Gogol Bordello live at Bumbershoot three years ago. After about 25 minutes, I have up on them, bored, and dismissed them as a novelty act.

Got this album for Christmas, lives up to the hype. Looking at the full bill in the liner notes...Billy Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Sonny Rollins, along with Monk and Coltrane...I wouldn't be surprised if there was a box set on the way.

01 Konono No. 1, Congotronics (Crammed Discs)
"Konono No. 1 is a Congolese band led by a man named Mingiendi. Mingiendi plays the likembé, aka the thumb piano.
Mingiendi plugs his likembé through a distortion box, making his instrument sound more like a blurry staccatto electric guitar, a fast-flashing sound that dances around in the body of the listener.
The rest of his band is made up of other likembé players, percussionists, megaphone-yellers and whistlers,... three dancers and a "president".

I'm beginning to think that this may be some big joke cooked up after a big bong hit session at the journalist guild's christmas party.

eMusic Writer:Dude, that is so awesome!! You're putting a freakin' Congolese thumb pianist as your number one album of the year!
City Paper Writer:My editor is going ta have a freakin stroke, brah!
eMusic Writer:Can I put this Kokomo dude at the top of my list, too?
City Paper Writer:Right on! We'll start like this whole new wave....All the indie kids will be looking for African thumb pianists.
eMusic Writer:Dude, have you tried these mini quiches?

Ok, y'all can stop holding your breath now. You may now slam my list.
Best of 2005:
1. Robbie Fulks- Georgia Hard
Alt-country troubadour Robbie Fulks was previously known for hurling a humorously scathing directive toward Nashville. Here he delivers a humorous, witty and poignant nod to the 1970's Nashville countrypolitan sound.
2. Hot Hot Heat- Elavator
Hmmm. What's a word that goes with "Hot"? Oooh, let's call ourselves Hot Hot Heat. Maybe it's the cheesy band name that makes this one seem a guilty pleasure. But play it when you're home alone, and guaranteed you'll be jumping around playing air guitar in the mirror.
3. Keren Ann- Nolita
Every year I go to Bumbershoot Festival, I discover an artist I had previously criminally
ignored. Two years ago it was Bobby Bare Jr and his criminal cronies, this year it was French chanteuse Keren Ann. Her whispery, moody vocals provide the perfect late night soundtrack.
4. Son Volt- Okemah and the Melody of Riot
Best comeback album of the year from an artist I had given up on. Probably more of a Crazy Horse rock influence than on any of their prevous releases, and easily their best since the debut. Political songs usually bore (I'm looking at you, Mr. Earle), but "Jet Pilot" was on the right plane for me.
5. Josh Rouse- Nashville
Had the tough task of following up one of my very favorite albums of all time. Succeeded in making a very good album, but not spectacular like its predeceasor. Lovely adult pop sound without being middle of the road crap.
6. Richard Hawley- Cole's Corner
One of those albums where the positive critical aclaim really hit the nail on the head. Great retro crooner sound, very reminiscient of Nick Lowe's last (excellent) album, the Convincer.
7. Nada Surf- The Weight is a Gift
Had the tough task of following up one of my very favorite albums of all time. Succeeded in making a very good album, but not spectacular like its predeceasor. Lovely adult pop sound without being middle of the road crap. Easy copy and paste review straight from above. Brendan Benson also was following up one of my favorite albums, but he didn't succeed as well as Rouse and Nada Surf did.
8. Tom Brosseau- What I Meant to Say is Goodbye
His voice is Buckley-esque, but his sound and lyrics are rural Western Americana at it's best. Another reto sounding album (see #6 and #9 on the list), but taking more of a cue from Woodie Guthrie. And he gets bonus points for picking me and my wife out at his show, pointing to us, and saying, "This song is dedicated to that couple right there."
9. Bobby Bare Sr.- The Moon was Blue
The only album this year to feature Bobby Bare Jr, Andrew Bird, and members of Lambchop. But their effort take a back seat to old man Bare's finely aged voice. A damn fine album for a guy who hasn't put one out in 22 years. A damn fine album period. Great retro sound with modern production touches. Not to unlike the Richard Hawley disc, though with a bit more of a country croon.
10. The Moaners- Dark Snack
The Trailer Bride weird-country sound had gotten stale, so Melissa Swingle apparently dumped her band, dumped her husband, became a lesbian, got a girlfriend, decided she was a bluesy garage rocker, and formed a band with her girlfriend. Not sure of the order. I am sure that this album fucking rocks.
11. Feist- Let it Die
I've never seen a Broken Social Scene show, and don't wish to. But I did see a Feist (Tower Records) show, along with about six Tower Records employees and three or four other would be fans, and it was completely underwhelming. Thankfully, her album offers a more fleshed out band sound of lush, gorgous jazzy sound. Sort of like what Norah Jones would sound like with the stick removed.
12. Chatham County Line- Route 23
My favorite bluegrass album of the year. Granted, it's the only bluegrass album of 2005 that I've listened to in it's entirety, but these guys bring some added instrumentation (e.g. steel pedal) to the mix without losing a respect for traditionalism. What Old Crow Medicine show would sound like if they stuck closer to bluegrass and stopped trying the be the country side of the Grateful Dead.

Was looking at your choices to see what cds I may want to buy. Saw this Wolf Parade mentioned quite a lot and decided to download a couple of songs to check it. Fuck they are good, priority number one, any other album/band that good in 2005?

Haven't heard Wolf Parade but I picked up The Books "Lost and Safe." Definitely worth it. Hard to pin down but I'll try: imagine The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev got together and asked "What if Thom Yorke got possessed by Laurie Anderson?" Talky, trippy, lots of found sounds and samples, lots of processing, very much a protools creation. It sounds almost continuous but there are very short silences between the tracks, making the disc very iPod friendly (i.e. for ripping).

Feist: Let it Die
Pitchfork: 8.1
Popmatters: 8
Not that I take either of them that seriously, but certainly I'm not alone with that pick.

this is a retrospective addition to my best of 05 list - I picked it up on Emusic after seeing it cropping up on a bunch of end of year lists - excellent stuff

Just recently Chaz and I had a blast recreating that scene in "The Kids Are Alright" invovling John Entwhistle and his Gold records, with those exact CDs. PULL!
