I was looking for info on the DC punk band Marginal Man from the 80's and I came across this photo of the old 930 club on 9th and F. It was titled "First hard core punk matinee at the 9:30 club. Washington, DC 1983."
Remember the column in the middle of the floor?

those must be art fags!
ps - that's really cool that that guy can stand on the side of the column like that!

Great band....

as long as we're on the topic of great moments at the old club, here's a good 9353 page I stumbled on recently...

Ahh very cool page. That band Bomb that was mentioned was great too...they had this record called "Hits of Acid" that I used to love. Thanks for the link.....
Whatever happened to Bruce??? Haven't seen or heard anything about him in maybe 5 years.....
-
I don't know, he seemed to pretty much disappear into thin air after his ill-fated 9353-without-vocals-revival attemmpt.
Since we're delving into nostalgia, check out this site which is trying to preserve some of the history of the non-Dischord side of DC punk (which was actually the more interesting part of the scene in my opinion.) Not quite sure who's behind this, but there's a lot of cool info on this site.

Last I knew he was in NYC with his girl friend doing art stuff. Talked to him right at the end of the instrumental 9353 period.

That's a great site. Some folks from some of the old bands post on the forum pretty regularly.

Well that's cool if he's doing OK.
Merkle has a brother who looks a lot like him. Many years ago, one of the Merkles was going around with a full beard on one half of his face, and the other half clean shaven. But then I'd see the other Merkle brother, who had a totally different facial thing going on. It took me a while to figure out it wasn't the same Merkle.
That link I posted also has its own forum, which seems heavily populated with ex Black Market Baby and GI members....
-
If you can remember it......you weren't there ;)
-
Bruce has two brothers...Phil and Willie....though it was Bruce with the half beard.
Never knew Willie but Phil was a good guy and a really good painter. Interesting bunch....
To bring up a previous thread, Bruce lived at 14th and t above paradise liquors for years.

Gentrifier!
-
Heh.... there are a couple of letters to the editor in today's Post about that 14th and T article. Apparently one of the owners of St. Ex was bitching about gentrifiers in the original article, and one of the letter writers points out that the owner of a restaurant selling $7-a-glass Chimay isn't really in a position to be doing that.

That is an excellent response. The co-owner should be careful what he complains about.
