Title: Pogues show...
Post by: Bags on November 29, 2005, 11:21:00 am
I figured a thread on this show would be helpful so when word of the ticket sale date gets out, we can find a place for it.  No presale passwords, however!    :p

I spent part of my savings to go from Bolivia to Brazil to see the Pixies and I am planning to do the same (spend most of them) now and fly from South America to DC to see the Pogues.

Pogues in NYC on St. Patty's Day is for sure a $100.00 ticket.............that's before the scalpers get a hold of them........anything you can get ahold of for less than that, buy it now!

Wrong

 3/16 $50
 3/17 $60
 3/18 $50

May have to leave this show to the gentry.

Any idea when tix go on sale. I was told tomorrow (12/1) but was also told on Saturday (12/3). Tickets.com doesn't have any info yet and you think they would if tix went on sale tomorrow or two days from now.

I hope the DC show sells out fast so that the Pogues might consider adding another show for Thursday, 9 March.  I mean if Shane & The Popes can sell out the 9:30 Club, the Pogues selling the club out will be a sure thing.
Title: Re: Pogues show...
Post by: RHCP1978 on December 03, 2005, 09:45:00 pm
I'm sure it will sell out pretty fast but hopefully not fast enough so I don't get tickets. How fast did the Shane and The Popes show sell out?
Title: Re: Pogues show...
Post by: rockabilly_rockabye on December 04, 2005, 08:35:00 am
I think Shane & The Popes sold out the night of the show.  It was the last night of their tour in the USA and it was also on a Friday.  But he has played at the club a few times, and each time I think they sold out.  It would be great though if the Pogues would add a second show at the club!  I can't imagine all eight of the Pogues (maybe nine if Cait shows up) on the 9:30 stage!  Shane alone gets the crowd going.  Spider is usually the designated MC of Pogues shows and he and Shane have great chemistry on stage.  You are pretty much guaranteed Fairytale of New York and Repeal of the Licensing Laws.

Why do people hope that shows sell out?

I mean, who wants to be crushed up against an overcrowded drunken throng of drunken faux Irish dudes?

Personally, I always wish for half to three quarter filled shows that enable one to find good sightlines and room enough to stretch ones legs.

It's been 24+ hours that the NYC tickets have been on sale, and none of the three shows there have sold out. I wouldn't worry about camping out for tickets.

Because with bands reuniting after (more or less) more than a decade, it is good to see a good audience response so that these bands keep doing it in the future and even record new albums.

I still haven't decided on seeing the show here or in my hometown of Atlantic City or both!

do ya think they'll still be $50 for these shows?

with that kind of ticket price, I'll have nothing left for beer.

I suppose only time will tell...
I'll be on my computer saturday morning...adding to my debt filled credit cards yet again!

Just ordered my tix about 25 minutes ago. $60 is a little much but hey, this will probably be the Pogues last trip to DC with Shane so it's worth it (plus the ticket was a present from my grandmother so I didn't have to pay for it  :D  ).

I'm so glad this is on a Friday too and I don't have to drive down there.

If you had skipped a haircut and your wife had skipped a massage, you could have had enough for a pair of tickets.

what are you on about... it was announced in the 9:30 club email yesterday
Title: Re: Pogues show...
Post by: Charlie Nakatestes, Japanese Golfer on December 08, 2005, 03:28:00 pm
Despite having signed up for the mail list several times, I never get the email.

I was hoping to get four at the box office and save on service fees. Then sell a couple of them for a marginal but not exorbitant price to defray the cost of my own tickets and effort in getting them.

If the show had been a little less publicized, I would have gotten tickets. As it was, they sold out prior to the box office opening.

Oh well, looks like I'll have more $$ for Xmas presents and our March vacation.

it's interesting to note that aren't any tickets for sale at either ebay or craigslist at the moment for the show... which would imply that it was mainly fans and not speculators snapping up those tickets right away.
Title: Re: Pogues show...
Post by: Charlie Nakatestes, Japanese Golfer on December 08, 2005, 03:45:00 pm
I think you could probably get more $$ if you waited until a few weeks prior to the show, rather than trying to sell them three months in advance.

Some people probably wouldn't want to commit to a show three months in advance.

Also, once the Jersey, Boston, and two remaining NYC shows sell out, people have less options, then driving the scalpers prices higher.

And finally, people tend to have more cash laying around in February than they do two weeks before Christmas.

From the Pogues msg board moderator:

 -------------
The bad news: The tickets for the 9:30 club went on sale prematurely. That really was the public sale, and it really is sold out.

The good news: The Presale tickets will still go on sale this afternoon. When those are gone, they're all gone.

I am told that the promoters may be working to ease the ticket crunch too. Keep checking in.

Thanks for spreading the information and making it that much harder to get the minimal amount of tickets that are available through a presale!!!

My wife would never give a Pogues show the same level of priority as a massage. Plus, she'd never pay $50 for a Pogues ticket.

And she's been nagging me to get a haircut for two weeks now. I couldn't take 11 more weeks of nagging.

Ironically, it automatically spit out two for me, and when I tried to change it two four, it wouldn't allow it. I don't care. No concert is worth $50+ anyway, to me.

I love Canada. I love Toronto. Last time I played Toronto with Terry Woods in 2003, twelve people showed up and STILL I love Toronto. But we can only go where people are prepared to offer us realistic fees. We cost more than most promoters expect, but I'm afraid that's their problem, not ours. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but between 1984 and 1994, a lot of people made a lot of money from The Pogues, none of them actually in The Pogues. This time, it's different.

Man, I figure 50 bucks aint bad to see my favorite bad.  Look at those "heavy hitters" selling tickets for $60 for the nose-bleed section and $120+ for decent seats.  Personally I'm happy.  AND I'm flying in from Texas for it.

They already did this morning.  There was a mix up I guess and the regular tickets went on sale before the pre-sale tickets.  So the show is totally sold out now I suppose.

Forgive my unforgivable naivete, but... is there *really* a second show being added?

I'm asking because I heard elsewhere that 9.30 tickets always go on sale on Thursdays, and Dec. 16 is a Friday... and I'm trying to avoid the next "presale."

 Thanks!

The post above yours announcing the second show is direct from the official 9:30 Club weekly email newsletter, so it's correct.

9:30 Club tickets usually go on sale on Thursdays.  Big shows can go on sale anytime, as they're often a special sale.

why not? maybe those were big fans of the Pogues who didn't get the tickets just as Rhett and other board members who tried at 5:30 pm last Thursday. Anyone can be mad at the people who buy tickets with the idea of selling them on ebay, but at the people who buy the tickets on ebay? not sure, you may argue that the people who buy these tickets on ebay are the ones who allow this vicious circle to work, but lots of people would try to pay whatever amount for a band they like a lot and also a band they didn't expect to see live again. Were the Talking Heads to reunite and play again, I wouldn't doubt to buy tickets on ebay if I thought that was the only chance left to get tickets.

Sadly, those who really want to get tickets for the second show will be fighting for 'em with scalpers who now know they can get over $200.00 each for them...With that in mind, it would be nice if those tickets were offered thru a password only pre-sale...Unfortunately, I can't get out of a work obligation to hop on-line Friday morning to sit in the virtual waiting room at Tickets.com...boo-hoo.

On average, what percentage of tickets for rock shows are on sale at ebay?
Title: Re: Pogues show...
Post by: Bartelby on December 14, 2005, 12:03:00 am
percentage of all tickets sold on e-bay or percentage of each rock show?

Beats me either way since I'm not a big e-Bay fan.  I'm pretty sure scalpers and "Premium resellers" keep on top of competitive pricing, however, and e-Bay's probably a good source of info.
Title: Re: Pogues show...
Post by: c4621 on December 14, 2005, 12:09:00 am
I feel bad for them because they most likely bought those tickets thinking that it was the only way for them to see the Pogues play at the 930.  If I had paid 200 bucks for a ticket and then found out I could buy one for face value, I'd be pissed.

I'd bet it varies by band:  Foo Fighters for two nights probably had a lot of scalped ticket holders; same for Audioslave, Death Cab, Bob Dylan..not eveyone camps out on this website.

People hear about their fav. groups playing here thru the grapevine - after the shows are sold-out, then go to any means necessary to find tickets.  IMHO 930's smaller size and big buying power means mucho scalping.

I don't feel bad for them at all.  Don't support scalpers then complain that you paid too much for a ticket.  Someone thinks the Pogues are worth $400.  They're going to see the Pogues for $400.  Had they been a little patient and waited a couple of days, they could be seeing The Pogues for a lot less.

Aftermarket ticket buying rule #1:  Never pay an outrageous amount of money for a ticket within hours of a show selling out.  There may be another show added, or the cost may drop a lot after the initial hype dies down.   It's not terribly uncommon to find people at the door practically giving tickets away for shows that sold out almost instantly.

And I'll bet it wouldn't have been too hard to pay someone half that price at the door for their tickets.
Title: Re: Pogues show...
Post by: Frank Gallagher on December 14, 2005, 12:32:00 pm
And like someone else pointed out, if you don't mind missing the opening song or two, you will most likely be able to get a ticket for LESS than face value when the scalper just wants shot of what's left.

I will be harangued for sure for even mentioning this, but it looks as if there is some sort of 'pre-sale' through pogues.com for 10am Thursday if you register.

Hmmm... wonder if this will actually work.

Not here to harangue...but the presale probabably only has a small percentage of available tickets.

Question for anyone who bought tickets in the first "presale"...were the service charges any less than the $6.25 per ticket+$3.25 per order service charges of tickets.com? Just wondering if there is any real advantage to bothering with the presale when it's probably easier to get tickets through the regular sale?

Boston Orpheum Theater capacity: 2800
 9:30 Club: 1200?

DC can draw from most of the Mid-Atlantic and all of the Southeast. Boston has to compete with NYC.

So I think it will defintitely sell out. Maybe not as fast as the first show, but maybe it will since everyone knows about it now.

Can someone remind me what the advantage is to WILL CALL?

As I understand it, you show up at the club and have to stand in a long line with a bunch of impatient drunken idiots and wait to pick up your tickets so that you can go stand in a line with other people who already had their tickets and didn't have to stand in the Will Call line.

And tickets.com charges you $3.25 no matter whether you have them mailed to you or pick them up Will Call. Correct?

Rhett the pre-sale is will call only so that scalpers don't scoop up all the tickets.  What part of this don't you understand?

Otherwise, maybe you're buying tickets just a day or two before a show and you're worried it may not be enough time to have them mailed out to you.  Will call!

I guess Kosmo answers my question. The advantage to this sale is in that it's an unadvertised presale.

There is no discernible advantage for the customer in buying "will call" tickets three months prior to a show, if the same service fees apply.

No, I'm just wondering what advantage to the customer there is to having "will call". No sour grapes. It just seems that a business would try to provide services that provide for the utmost convenience of its' customers, particularly customers paying $56+ for a ticket at a standing room only venue. And I question what convenience will call provides.

A lot of times tickets are released back when people either don't check out in the allotted amount of time or give bad credit card info, or etc.  The ticket I got in my cart (just one) allowed me to go through the entire process, right up until submitting the order.  Then I came to my sense since it was $65 dollars that I don't have.

Kosmo,
We are complaining no more, now that we all have tickets thanks to you guys blabbing on this forum. Since this forum is open to anybody there is really nothing exclusive about it. If you guys were really Seth's "People" then he would have emailed you with the "exclusive" info. Thanks for serving the real Pogues fans. Now continue your "'you suck' - 'no, YOU suck'" discussion.

Flogging Molley is a good show. Pogues are very different. And if you don't know that, you probably just don't get it.... and yes, you probably do SUCK! hehehe

Thanks for the show on the 9th Seth. I guess lot of Pogues fanatics here are in your debt. And thanks to the band as well. I'm sure it will be a great show. One question though: doors open at 10:00, or does the band come on at 10:00?

Pogues, Flogging Molly. Same difference. Punch of pasty drunken Irishkis singing and dancing around doing a jig.

uh, correct me if i'm wrong, but tickets for the first show were listed not to go on sale until last saturday on the offical pogues site.  their information was either wrong, or the 930 started selling tickets early - by the time the public sale was supposed to happen, all the tickets were sold out due to tickets.com/930 selling them early.  so really, you could say that the first show is for members of this forum...i see no harm done that the password was posted on the offical pogues forums. besides its not like you can really scalp them anyway.

although doesnt really matter to me anyway since i got tickets to the friday show hehe

it took hours (not minutes) for the first show to sell out.  tickets went on sale at 10am...i bought tickets around 4:30pm.

my point of view on this issue is that this presale appeared to be a perk for being a member of this forum.  the minute the link was posted elsewhere it dimishes the value of that perk.  my concern was that forum members were going to get locked out of getting tickets because of others were gaining access to presale, which now doesn't appear to have happen.  regardless all future complainers should take up their beefs elsewhere....

Yes, but you got tickets through the regular sale.

This is a presale for which you are paying for the privilege of standing in the will call line.

You probably have already received your tickets, and won't be allowed to stand in the will call line.

I don't know how you would wait in line for 30 minutes without TRYING to get there at the most popular time to stand in line.  If you're waiting that long, you planned it that way.

the convenience of being able to buy tickets in advance of the show, regardless of shipping time.  if all tickets had to be mailed, advance sales online or on the phone would have to be cut off at some point in order to ensure adequate shipping time.  with will call, you can order tickets whenever you want, and know for sure that they will be waiting for you at the box office.

the only shows with crazy will call lines are the ones that sell a lot of tickets late, or are will call only in order to prevent scalping.

I'm 95% sure that the doors will be at 10:00.  There's another band scheduled for the club that night (though not announced on 9:30's website, but up on the band's website) -- it's pretty usual for 9:30 to hold two shows in one night, and 10:00 is the normal door time for the second show.  The earlier show will probably be doors at 6:00.

I just assumed if a vast majority of the tickets are sold as will call tickets, and doors open at 10, there's going to be a very long line. Particularly if there is no opening band. But perhaps I assume wrong. I've never bought will call tickets. Actually I have will call tickets for the Nada Surf show in Baltimore, but somehow I think that will be a little less hectic.

My guess is they sold out every available ticket via yesterday's pre-sale....which makes it false advertising in my book, stating that tickets go on sale on 12/16...when they don't have any left!!!  If this is Seth's or somebody else's idea of how to keep tickets out of the hands of scalpers, it didn't work.  Tickets for the 3/9 show were being scalped on Ebay yesterday...and they still are, with BUY IT NOW prices generally starting in the $200@ range.  For that price, I can go to Atlantic City and see the Pogues on  Saturday (at the Borgata), 3/11. (Tickets are still available there.)

While I also managed to snag 2 tickets this morning, I guess I'm a bit peeved about the pre-sale because I've always been emailed by the 930 club in the past about pre-sales, and wasn't this time.  If that pre-sale lasted 8 hours, when did it start, at 6 AM?  I tried buying tickets around 2 in the afternoon, after a friend called to tell me about the pre-sale, only to be told on-line that the # of tickets I was requesting (1 or 2)weren't available, try another price range (there was only one out there!), etc.

Don't recall that debate, but from my years in DC, my favorite place was Pollys, like four blocks away from the 9:30, not an Irish Pub but a nice place to have a few beers before a show. Don't know much about Irish Pubs, but I think there were quite a few in Cleveland Park, not very close to the club but next to a metro station.

you're really better off asking these questions in the FAQ section coz the staph are the only ones who know fer sure

if it helps, at a late show a few weeks ago the first band started at about 10.30
