Sunday, 12/7...damn, I hate that venue. What a shame...I'd really like to see that guy sometime, just not THERE.
-
I'd rather go there than Nissan.

Do they mention who's the opener for the tour?
-
So I was just talking to Lefty about this off the board, who do you think would draw a bigger crowd in the US now, Peter Gabriel or David Bowie? He seems to think that Bowie could fill MCI, which Gabriel could not do recently, anybody agree, disagree?
-
LOL...Macy Gray opening. Yeah, I agree, Nissan is worse...I just thought of Bowie as more of a Warner Theater type performer (yeah, I know, small venue), or maybe he could do 2 nights at the 9:30. Nissan just seems so BIG for Bowie....and the Patriot Center might be hard for him to fill. Or am I underestimating how big he still is?

What a shame.Europe gets the Dandy's and this is what we get.Ever get the feeling you've been cheated!!I guess some will be happy for this.It just confirmed for me that I will be passing on this one.

Macy Gray is less annoying than Dandy Warhols.

I don't think either could fill the MCI, but Bowie would draw larger crowds outside of DC (like MSG for example).

I would think Bowie could sell MCI.
Did anyone catch Bowie saying he doesn't expect copyright to last another decade? Which is very funny, considering Bowie is the guy that issued bonds secured by the future revenue of his songwriting royalties.

I find Macy Gray to be WAY more annoying than the Dandy Warhols...at least they don't sound like Donald Duck smoking 3 packs of Kool Cigarettes a day.

I fully agree!!!! And I too think that Bowie would sell more tickets.
With that said, considering the venue, the opener and the cost of the ticket, I'll be missing this show.
-
Ditto!

At least she doesn't look like she's straight out of bad 80's gay porn, like the Dandy's lead singer does.
Well, actually, she looks like she could have been in bad 70's pron.

I don't think Bowie could sell-out Patriot Center. I think he should be playing 9:30 Club and Wolf Trap, like Lou Reed.

No, that probably means you have a secret stash of 80's gay porn. :)
I'm glad I have my personal pictures from the 80's tucked far away.

whoever thinks Bowie couldnt sell out the Patriot center is plain crazy. I would have thought Bowie was a nuch bigger star than Gabriel by a mile. What are the total album sales by the two artists?

Nah. Why bother? It's a losing proposition. No matter how slim my chances are, at least there is a possibility with a straight guy.
BTW, Courtney is straight. ;) Sorry Rhett.

I think more mainstream music fans and those willing to spend big venue money would go see Peter Gabriel before Bowie. I prefer Bowie by a long way, but that is just my impression.
-
I don't think Bowie or Gabriel are very popular with the college crowd, and they buy most of the concert tickets.
Maybe he's playing GMU since it's out in the burbs and that's where all his middle aged fans live.

Why?
I am afraid of Americans.
What has Gabriel done in the last 10 years, what has he ever done, compared to Bowie?
-
Either way, they both have tons of fans across many sectors of music, ages, etc.. But I think the last Gabriel tour was a very serious lesson to the artists and everyone else involved that the public can and will only put up with so much to see their idols. People generally don't like the bigger venues anymore, especially in this area. The tickets were beyond over-priced. Some people will pay it and others won't. Then there are many who just can't pay it even if they are willing. We have lots of other good shows to attend here so it's not like it's the big town event. Just too many things to weigh out and that's not even taking into consideration the economy, convience of tour dates, etc..
-
Plus, Peter Gabriel was 1/3rd of Genesis......1/3rd of shit is still shit.

not in the last 10 years, but this album was pretty huge with those paying big bucks for concert tickets

Its hard to have long-term popularity without it though. Hence the monkees had good tunes and people remeber them. New kids on the block and the bay city rollers, er didnt and are forgotten.
Gabriel has one classic album, bowie has several. Plus doesnt that Gabriel album sound terribly 80s now?

To each his own Rhett,to each his own. There will be no denying my admiration for the Dandy's craft, even if they are somewhat self indulgent, they do pschedelic stoner dirge as good as the best of em.Macy Gray on the other hand... (yawn)Got to give it to Bowie though,he never fails to expand his fanbase.

crazy man here
the fact is that David Bowie has never done big business except for a few places, DC not being one of them
even in his Let's Dance heyday, he didn't sell the Capital Centre the way he was supposed to. and the Moby tour last year was a disaster.
who knows, maybe everybody will decide to see him this time, but it would be a first.
Peter Gabriel, by the way, did horrendous business at MCI, and even worse when he came back to Nissan.
just because an artist is one of the all-time greats, as either of those two surely are, it doesn't mean they sell tickets.
Fellini movies were not huge commercial successes either. Spiderman, on the other hand...
-
Originally posted by MaLo:

they can make more money by using assigned seating (different prices for different sections), so what reason would they really have to make it general admission?
i would like to see rem, but i couldn't afford to buy the tickets when they first went on sale. if it were general admission, i would be going. since all i can get are not-so-great seats, i can't justify spending nearly $70. i saw rem quite a few years ago (the last show of a tour in atlanta) and it was great. i wouldn't want to remember a sub-par experience more than the better one.
i prefer general admission shows by a lot. this is not coming from someone who is at all a fan of mosh pits. it allows one to stand where they want and move around as they please. not to mention, if you get stuck sitting beside someone screaming "WOOOOO" or yelling out band member names when they look towards her direction (even though she is too far away to be heard) or when you are standing behind some huge drunken guy that decides he wants to dance at his seat by making a swimming motion with his arms, nearly hitting you on the backswing almost every time, you can move away from all of that.
i had front row center tickets for a show earlier this year and i couldn't believe the amount of people attempting to carry on conversations OVER the music when they had seats that close!

So what magic have the stones got that enables them to keep playing stadia?

Seth, "Let's Dance heyday" was some of Bowies weakest work.
The fact remains though it's just more proof that yanks have music tastes up their holes. Springboard, Bon Jovi and Van Halen etc. can sell out but genius's like Bowie don't!
Bowie would sell out more if he toured solo more...when he's with nine inch nails, Moby or any other pile of crap, the Bowie fans...of which there are millions, aren't going to sit through all that shit for 45 minutes of the God.
I've seen Bowie many, many times both in UK and over here and it's a case of camping out for tickets in UK, and even here if the shows weren't sold out there was only a couple of seats left empty.
You will see an older crowd at the Bowie show and I'll be surprised if he doesn't sell out.

There is a reason the present begrudges the past," writes Harlan Ellison; I won't pretend to be wise enough to know what that reason is, but I believe that statement to be true, regardless. The evidence is plain in just about anyone beyond a certain age, the all-consuming, epic oldness where a person can say "when I was your age" without a trace of irony. It hits some people as early as twenty or so, when they suddenly find themselves on the downhill side of life, confronted with a bleak realization that things were a whole lot greener back when they were still climbing (or before they knew any better, at least). Some people, they just never stop climbing; it's rare, but it happens.
A great many of David Bowie's fans, with each successive year, slowly but surely creep into the former category even as Bowie himself manages to still act like a card-carrying member of the latter.

Try saying that with a straight face next time you see him prancing with Mick in the "Dancing in the Streets" video.
By the way, did Bowie take it up the ass from Mick, or was in the other way around?

Not sure what his acting has to do with his music..but I'm sure you'll educate me thirsty.
Unless you're relating him dressing up...in which case you're way off because he was dressing up and adopting many different personas with every new tour/album....from day one! Ziggy, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Thin White Duke...that's his thing...just ask your parents!
-
Actually, my parents aren't big fans of Bowie. I am. However, my Dad did like Space Oddity.
Oh, and Mank. Have you heard Bowie at the Beeb? It's all his best totally stripped down. You can really hear his influence on punkers.
-
I believe he had something to do with the soundtrack for Labyrinth as well.
Oh, and whatever happened with that LiveAid stuff? Wasn't that Geldof's idea.
Who's Geldof? Should I ask my parents?
-
So it's ok to do something that musically is a sell out because it is for charity? That justifies it's crappiness.
I'm sure the added exposure gained from this charity event didn't hurt him at all commercially in the ensuing years....though his crappy late 80's output certainly did.

Rhett, you should just stop before you look even more like the horses arse that you are...neither Jagger or Bowie need "added exposure" for God's sake.
I think it's okay to do whatever the hell you want if it's for charity.

I have the cd ..it can really only be appreciated by hardcore Bowie fans though don't you think? Definately not for the more music savvy ones such as Rhett!

It was indeed Geldof and Midge Ure, or whatever his name was from Ultravox. They did the Christmas song, "Do they know it's Christmas" and it just grew from there...so you can say it was the brain child of an Irish and Scotsman really. Bowie and Jagger did their thing because neither were able to attend the recording of the Christmas song but wanted to contribute...selling out? I think not...

Georgetown....AU.....GW....probably that lot. They're all just rich kids for the most part.
My boss (no pun intended) got dragged to springsteen by his wife and their friends, who are all in their 40's plus. He couldn't take it for the whole show so left half way through...which I found quite funny. He's Scottish by the way.
-
No, but I think Springsteen is way more popular with middle and working class middle aged people.
Despite flirting with the mainstream, I think Bowie is still a bit of a cult figure.

What I mean is, I think it's the college age kids that are buying most of the concert tickets. But I don't think the college kids are hip to DAvid Bowie these days. Try Dave Matthews, Phish, and other newere artists, epsecially those with a pseudo-jammy vibe. Or maybe the nu-metal stuff.
There are some classic acts that bring out the middle age crowd, such as Springsteen or the Eagles, but I don't think Bowie ever had nearly the popularity as those acts in America to begin with.

Off subject slightly, but what's new with me huh? We were playing Squeeze in the car the other day and "Tempted" came on. I mentioned it was a little weird that Gap are now using this song in a current ad....my wife said, "I always thought this was Hall & Oates"..and wasn't joking. I tell you, it's lucky I don't own a white vest or you would've seen me in a future episode of Cops!
The only way I was able to forgive her and save our marraige was the fact Paul Carrick sings on that song so I was able to excuse her being confused.

4. Elton John/Billy Joel
5. Dave Matthews
6. Springsteen
7. Aerosmith
8. Creed
9. Neil Diamond
10. The Eagles

13. The Who
14. Britney Spears
15. Jimmy Buffett
16. Rush

18. Tool
19. "Lord of the Dance"
20. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

Are those the top ten in total attendance, or in ticket revenue? At $100+ a pop, you can sell a lot less tickets.

i'll take the bait... how different is this from letterman, leno, etc... other than it reaches a larger audience of "hip" soccer moms who might actually be watching the show and be interested that bowie has a new cd out.

Dave Matthews sold the most tickets, as he toured the most of all of the top ten.
Nonetheless, his total is still a fraction of the tickets sold to the older folk who saw the other top nine.
I don't think Peter Gabriel is a good comparison either. Gabriel had a sole blockbuster album in the 1980s. Bowie had Gold in three decades.

I don't know, getting up at 5 am to rehearse for a national tv appearance doesn't strike me as very rock and roll, as some (not me) have defined it on this board.
It sounds more like someone who is a corporate shill, or a government drone.
But I'm not knocking it. I'm not one of the people advocating some sort of pedestal rock and roll lifestyle. So if Mr. Rock Star wants to live a "normal" lifestyle, well that's not a bad thing.

I turned the tv on after I saw your post before work hoping to catch him. Instead just caught Lauer talking about how Bowie stopped by his dressing room at 5 or something to say Hi and said he is always up then because of his 3 year old. Sounds normal to me. Unfortunately I did not get to see him, just got to see constant shots of people on windy beaches and remembered why I don't watch tv.
-
David Bowie or Peter Gabriel could sell out anywhere. Peter Gabriel's music had little to do with poor sales for the tour. I think the 160.00 seats had more to do with it. As high as they seem, Bowie's prices are about the norm these days for an arena tour. His sales elsewhere are very good so far, on the east coast anyway. I think he'll sell out at Patriot or come damn close. As far as Macy Gray vs. Dandy Warhols, who cares? If you actually do like one of them, skip this show. Even with great seats, it sucks trying to enjoy an opening band in a way-too-big venue while people who dont give a rats ass talk on their cell phones around you.
-
Ive seen Bowie three times..all three times in smaller size venues..each time the place was half empty..
I guess Im crazy
