So what if the rain is so bad it floods things. Any chance this show will be called off?
-
if they cancel it, I will become MURDEROUS. I'm going to camp out in DC all day with my laptop if I can, in case it gets really bad, so I don't have to drive. this is the concert of the year, I will NOT miss it unless it's cancelled
-
I thought the bulk of the rain would be arriving in the overnight hours. Thus the show can go on.

You speak with such assured authority that anyone would think you had a direct line to god. Jesus, is that you?
-
I am just afraid that the DC storm drains will fail. I remember the night of the Fall show at the Black Cat that all down Florida Avenue the sewer lids were popped off from the water overflow, so if it does get really intense and flood the club, that would suck.
-
well the walls are blue already, I should think the water theme would fit rather well..... I bet the backbar will be watery.
-
should we form a sandbag team? :D

hey dont be mean to Bags........

FYI Evil Satan is getting sandbags, so I think the backbar will be OK, for once.
-
Just watch out for that damn outside grating as sometimes it seems the storm drain by the main door just "stops". Eerie when you realize that it is completely filled with water.
-
I have no doubt that the show will go on unless BRMC can't make it up from NC, which is where they are playing tonight.
What really has me extremely concerned is all of the driving that I have to do from the north of Baltimore. Very heavy rains and lots of strong winds are not the safest of driving conditions even if it slows down to a tropical depression. And that's not even considering my small car with crappy tires and other crazy drivers on the road. Most of us don't have the luxury of being able to drive a Volvo, Hummer, or some other heavy duty piece of metal.
The way that I see it, we'll all be drenched rats when we show up to the show, get the worst of it while BRMC are onstage and then have even worse conditions to have to drive home in.
Anyone up for an all night Hurricane party? :D
While we're at it, who all is going? Come Hell or high water, I'm doing my best to be there.

Shouldn't there be an outdoor Radiohead concert? I also hope this show happens.

You know, I was thinking the other night that BRMC must be DC's and Baltimore's new Radiohead.
They skip us on the Intimate Tour
The HFStival was cancelled
Hurricane Isabel
And they are off to tour Europe yet again in only a couple weeks so it's not likely they'll make it up to us.
Samantha, we need to do something about this.

I will be there. This is a time when I appreciate having knee-high vinyl boots.

well i was going to suggest driving as far as greenbelt metro and taking the train in... but its closing at 11am. using the metro from greenbelt is handy because the last train leaving u-street towards greenbelt is after midnight...
-
Risking life and limb for BRMC? First off, the chances of them playing are nil. The city is pretty much shut down the whole day and the rough weather doesn't come until the evening. Saw them open for spiritualized (and HFS... but does that count?)last year and certainly enjoyed the set, but can't say I long to witness it again. Besides, the new album has grown on me, but I'm getting tired of listening to immature political opinions. I know it's rock and roll, but I can't say I'm drawn to thier sound because of it. Wah, Wah, the U.S. Gov't this and that while we and they live comfortably under the umbrella this gov't provides. Anyhow.... won't be there tomorrow.
-
jag, you can stay at my house if you can't get home after the show.
bunnyman and i will be at the show.

I guess its pretty much a given that if the show goes on tomorrow I will not be attending... no metrorail or bus service..and getting a cab and spending 20+ going there and back doesn't make sense... if you guys make it have fun and if you think you might get stuck in DC and need a place to crash drop me a line..
live forever,
F.

this show isn't just about BRMC. this is also about the Warlocks. and my old best friend/ex who's on tour with them. I love them all personally, just can't miss it. if it storms I will be going to New York to see them...I cannot miss this lineup

Your employer sucks ass! I could see it if you worked in a hospital or some other similiar essential service. What time do you get off from work? Getting a cab then will be a real bitch too.
Fico, do you already have a ticket?
-
my employer had a change of heart and is allowing those that are metro dependent to stay home. but i'm tethered to the computer and the phone glued to my ear to check up on my staff and get status reports on projects.
jag, if the show does go on tonight as scheduled. get in touch with me and i'll see how i can help you.

Thank God! Glad to hear that. ;)
Okay, I appreciate that. Right now, I don't even know if I'll be able to make it. It's just looking like a real death trap right now. Looks like it will allow the more venterous to make it in but then thrown out right in the middle of the very worst of it.
-
We're open for business today so if anyone would like to come buy a Maserati or Ferrari to drive to the show seeing as metro wimped out on you...just give me a call!
-
I am of the same opinion as most and will be there tonight. This will probably be the best show the 9:30 has put on this year. I don't know how anyone can pass on a band that rocks. Who cares about personal safety. You're dealing with rock and roll here.

We (wifey and I) went to see The Young Dubliners the day after 9-11 (could've been 2 days after) and it was just what everyone needed. When the band came on the singer made the comment that they had seriously considered cancelling, but after much thought came to realize that if they did...the bastards would've won. It was a great time and a much needed escape from the reality outside the doors.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is if it's safe travel to the club then I would imagine it will be a great atmosphere at the show.

Well, it seems like the Four Seasons Georgetown is in need of making some more money.. they have a "Hurricane Special" for everyone too scared to stay in their own homes (I'm included in that, there is a huge tree looming over my bedroom, poised and waiting to crash down on me since the moment we moved in). Looks like I'll be calling room service and watching pay-per-view movies tonight. :D

Where would i find out if the show is cancelled? would they just post it on this website?
-
My fingers are crossed, and my tickets bought, so I'm going. Am more amped for the Warlocks than BRMC, but both bands are very good.
-
This is probably a dumb question, but I can't find the answer anywhere on the site... what time does the back bar open? Is it any earlier than the door time? I'm going to try to make it to the show tonight, but I've got a long walk and figure the earlier I set out the better. Thanks!
-

They would post it on the front page under "Today is" -- where they currently show the set times.
-
does anyone know if the taxis are doubling their fares like they do in snow? i would have to take a cab to and from the show because metro is shut down. but if its ging to be $15 because of double fares each way, i don't think i'll go tonight. not because i can't afford it, but its the principal that my taxi fare is twice the cost of a ticket!
-

the backbar opens when the club opens. tonight, that would be 7:30.
-
Lily, read your email. ;)
Things do NOT look good at all. Bridges and roads already shut down and loads of accidents.
We're on the NE side of the eye which is the most violent side of a hurricane. They're expecting 63-70 MPH winds just in Baltimore. Should be more in DC as it's right in the path of the eye. Crap!
-
By the time BRMC finishes, how is the weather going to be? I'm coming from College Park, a little hesitant since my car is not the greatest and I certainly do not want it to die or anything like that!
-
Some gusty wind just passed by, it's really sacrying me now. Don't think I want to risk my life for BRMC... Any thoughts?
-
jag, got your email. let me know what you decide. not much going on in dc. some minor rain and a few wind gusts.
-
Does anyone know what the refund policy will be?
Even if they do play, it will be nearly impossible for some people to go to the show because of the weather/metro shutdown.
-
I don't think they do any refunds. It'd be so much better if they can just cancel it and reschedule it!
Will it be better if I try to drive home immediately after the show ends or hang around until the club closes then drive back to Maryland?
-
Okay, so who is still planning on going to this show? I want to go but am beginning to feel like it may not be worth it. It could be much fun though short of a major catastrophy. What are you thinking?
-
i have absolutely no intention of leaving my apartment tonight............
call me a woos if you want i don't care..........i'm actually looking forward to watching the wind and the rain from the best place in the world..........................
bed!!!!
-
Don't blame you Lulu! That's the best way to enjoy it. At least you have a husband to entertain you. Make him put his bondage pants on for you. :D .....for a little while.
From what I'm seeing, it looks like it's going to get pretty bad in several hours. It has only just started to hit. Just saw that they will be closing some roads down in Laural which is one of the areas that I'd have to drive through.
Lily, the more I think about it, the more I think that with all of my driving, I'd just be letting myself drive right into a death trap. It's the driving part that scares me to death. The Maryland governor is begging us to stay home. The DC mayor said to "keep your behind inside". Everything is shut down. I've got way too much to go through and can't guarantee my safety. Oh, and my route, I295 has downed trees already in both directions. There are lots there so probably many more yet to fall.
My song for tonight:
Red Eyes And Tears

-
My assumption is that while it will be a very windy and wet storm, it's nothing that I need to worry about. I'm on Capitol Hill and will be driving over, and anticipate a slow drive but one that will take place without any problems, and will park somewhere that's not under a tree. The show will go on, it will be great, the drive home might take a little longer than usual, and might require a little more caution, but it will take place without incident. Parking will be a bitch, but I'll still be home by midnight, glad to have made the trip.
I'd probably feel differently if I lived in Baltimore or the deep 'burbs of Virginia. Otherwise, I don't think the storm is that big of a deal.
-
If you go, you're probably better staying until they kick you out at closing time. Just don't get too loaded to drive extra carefully. The worst of the storm should be about midnight, give or take an hour. Best to stay and sit it out.
Damn, I want to be there so bad and have a hurricane party with my friends and BRMC!!! I'd go too if I was only coming from Capital Hill or somewhere within the DC suburbs.
-
if i lived within walking distance, i'd go. but sadly i don't. what else you going to do tonight? watch constant news interruptions of the rain and wind? b-o-r-i-n-g.

Anyone going southbound, there's downed trees on both I95 at Rt. 32 and I295. One on I295 northbound too.

Well, I am incredibly frustrated. At this point, it looks like I am not going to be able to go to the show. Trees are down in my neighborhood, and I can't get through. I am really annoyed with the club for not postponing the show. I don't understand the point of carrying on the show at the height of the storm to what will probably be a half empty club. I have been looking forward to this show for quite some time and to know it is going on anyway just pisses me off. If public transportation is shut down, then the show should be postponed.
-
THE SHOW IS ON. I just called the business office at 7:30 and a guypicked up the phone and said the show is on and hung up the phone. BRMC's website also says the show is on. Would be a lot easier if they would just POST THIS ON THE 930 HOME PAGE. ?!?!?! Yeah, it should be postponed cause so many people can't go-that sucks, but weirdly I live 5 blocks away and already have a ticket. I am going to bet that the show is on because BRMC got the f*** out of NC last night and have been here all day...see all you wet dogs there. Terra
-
quit letting the fear inducing media get the best of you. we have winds like this in every thunderstorm..dozens of time per year..maybe not sustained over hours, but it's no reason to not live your life. you are just as likely to have a tree fall on your apartment/house as you are driving around. go to the show!
-
It's not a question of fear. It is a question of being able to drive my car down the street. If the street clears, I will go.
-
hello all you boarders, 'tis me (megs) back in force. i too was looking forward to this show for ages, but no way am i driving from va to d.c. in the middle of a hurricane. i think the club has been extremely irresponsible in not postponing the show, and i certainly hope no one who actually ventures out to the show gets into an accident or anything. shame on the club. we'll all just have to go the next time black rebel are in town. buggery hurricane...

It's not the media, it's the FACTS that are making some of us reconsider our options. No, we do NOT have winds like this in every thunderstorm. In fact, this is not a "thunder storm", as you say. Though there is some thunder and lighting in some areas. This is a freaking hurricane! Look it up if you don't know what that is. And I certainly hope that you don't major in statistics! Sure, trees fall all the time but the ratio is so much higher during hurricanes. And it's not just trees falling, it's flooding, sliding, and cars being blown around. Also, lots of roads closed and bridges washed out. Have you ever driven before in a hurricane? And I don't mean down the bloke and around the corner. It's not a wise thing to do.
If you have any doubts of what I've just posted, call an insurance company and ask them for some facts. You must either be very young, from the Mid-West, or live only a couple blocks from the club to throw accusations like that at those who know when to cut their losses for the sake of their own, and possibly others' hides. And in this case, it calls for a lot more foresight and second guessing before things happen and all at the last minute. You can't blame someone for staying home when they don't have transportation and you can't get on anyone for being a bit cautious when they know how many odds are in or not in their favor. We don't have hindsight to work with here, only predictions and knowledge or the area and our abilities.
-
LuLu, I'm with you. I'm even kind of close, but would still have to drive as the buses aren't running. Though it doesn't seem like it's been awful, I'm just not very 'daredevilish,' and if I'm going to be stranded anywhere, I want it to be in MY apartment with all my wonderful stuff! I didn't go out drinking in cleveland park either because I dreaded the 1.2 mile walk up should a tree fall or some odd object be blown into me. Now the walk home would probably be more hazardous because of the timing, but I'd be drunk!

Well, I hate to be the bearer of unwelcome news, but the show was excellent.
Really excellent.
-
ggw, I'm glad it was excellent. Those of you who braved the weather to get there deserve it. Sucks for the folks further away, but such is life once in a while.
Now get to sleep! Oh, unless you work for the feds or offices that follow fed policy -- another day off tomorrow!
-
Well, once they cleared my street, I made it to the show. The driving home wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. Just some debris on the roads and heavy rain at one point. But I think I lucked out with my route because I know other places like 295 from Baltimore were bad.
But the show! As ggw said, it was pretty amazing. I've always liked them but I didn't remember them being this good. I think they've really come together and kicked it up. Robert, for one, was very animated on stage. And the new stuff is great live. They even took a request during the encore which was special for the guy next to me. Oh and they played with some of the songs so that they sounded quite different from the albums. I hope they come back soon so that you can hear/see what we are talking about.

Ummm, it woulda been half empty anyways  . Also i dont blame the club for not cancelling, way to go 9:30!!!!!!!! Lastly it wasnt a hurricane, it was a tropical storm, and when it hit us i would barely even call it that, just a normal storm since we pretty much get floods during a regular rain storm.

this is one of those can't-win deals. but, just for everyone's information, the calls were about 10 to 1 in favor of people who wanted us to put the show on.
the band was there (having made it up from NC), the club was operational, a lot of people wanted to come down.
so how was it irresponsible? if you felt that it was too dangerous, you didn't need to come down. your choice. it's just a rock concert. we didn't make anyone come crawling over broken glass to get to a life-sustaining resource. if you think it was that life-and-death to cancel the show, in the name of safety, then you are basically admitting that it was important enough to put on the show for those that wanted to go.
are the movie theaters all irresponsible for showing movies in th storm? how about the stores that managed to stay open? should they have closed in case you decided it was too dangerous to shop there?
however...
as in all of these emergency situations, we would be happy to exchange your unused ticket for another show. call the club for details.

Just be grateful no one was injured in an accident on the way to the show on such a bad evening...you know it would've been the clubs fault for not cancelling, just ask any scumbag lawyer...which is basically all lawyers.
-
Actually, I don't think the club is liable if someone is injured on the way to the club. That is pure foolishness.
Now if someone were injured AT the club, and it was caused by the weather, that maybe is another story.

Guiny, it was only a 4 MPH difference in sustained winds that made it a tropical storm as oppossed to a hurricane. And your taste in music is irrelevant here. Also, it's very obvious that you haven't seen my neighborhood or that of many others.
Seth, thanks so much for having a heart for those of us who had to forfeit a damn good show. Hope they come back very soon!

I have to say, I came downtown from the NW DC/MD line without any real problems, and drove home (around midnight) with even fewer. I'm awfully sorry to those balmor folks out there (Jag! Man that sucks...) but for those of us in DC, there was hardly a hitch. I can't remember who said it, but Isabel did end up making it a pretty special night...excellent set from the Warlocks and a phenomenal set from BRMC, capped with a huge 3 song encore. Not a bad night to meet, GGW.

I was lucky enough to see the show. But I really do feel bad for everyone who wasn't able to make it to the show due to circumstances out of their control. Thanks, at least, for being fair enough to let people exchange tickets. And book BRMC again soon!

B.R.M.C.: Menacing Rock to Match the Night
Saturday, September 20, 2003; Page C05
Do you have to be an idiot to venture out in the middle of a hurricane just to see a rock band? No, but it helps. It also helps to be a fatalist.
Or a storm scoffer. Or perhaps just a devoted fan. The crowd of 250 or so that braved flying road signs and dodged urban driftwood to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at the 9:30 club Thursday night was probably a mix of those types.
Bassist and singer Robert Turner expressed R-rated surprise at the healthy turnout. "I don't know what the [expletive] you're doing here," he said. "Don't you know you're supposed to be home?" The nasty weather wasn't about to keep the bushy-haired, black-clad California trio from making a menacing racket with their songs, however. Cast in an eerie red light on a dark stage, the band thundered through songs from its debut album, "B.R.M.C.," and its recent release, "Take Them On, on Your Own."
Trafficking in dark and brooding rockers that seem to well up from a pit of angst and aggravation, cynicism and doubt, nihilism and even true love, B.R.M.C. relentlessly pounded songs home. Fabulously efficient drummer Nick Jago made maximum impact with minimum showboating, while guitarist and singer Peter Hayes scattered six-string shards of brilliance on "Spread Your Love," "Love Burns" and the politically charged "US Government," formerly titled "Kill the US Government." On "Whatever Happened to My Rock 'N' Roll?," the band matched the day's weather with a fury all its own.
Before kicking off an extended, increasingly ear-splitting, feedback-fueled encore, Turner thanked fans again for risking life and limb for 90 minutes of rock. "I hope your town's still there when you leave," he said. For the most part, it was. And the idiots, fatalists, scoffers and fans made their way safely home.

I would tend to agree with Kurosawa's sentiments.
Why did you get calls that were 10:1 in favor of having the show? Probably because the people who WERE NOT calling were people who had MORE IMPORTANT things on their mind than a concert. Like protecting themseoves, their belongings, their loved ones, etc.
Perhaps the true ratio of importance here is not the 10:1 ratio, but rather the ratio of how many people made it to the show (250) to the number of people who didn't go who would have (?). But of couse, that's a hindsight ratio..

the angel on my left shoulder said it wasn't such a good idea to go out driving by oneself... if kosmette had been in town the second pair of eyes in the car would have done the trick. sounds like a good one but whatca going to do when isabel come for you.

Actually its only 1 mile. 73 is the upper limit for tropical storm and 74 is a class 1 hurricane.

Best show I've seen this year. Both bands sounded great, and I especially liked how the two Warlocks drummers pretty much played the same beats, giving their sound more power. My only thought during their set was, just think how great they would be if someone like Richard Ashcroft were singing over the top. The current singer's vocals didn't seem strong enough to climb over the din of the band.
BRMC were much better than I'd thought or could have hoped. Real good and real loud.

alright a few things to say
one, the club's decision was a fair and very nice one too, that unused tickets can be turned in for a different show? I didn't even buy a ticket and I think that's awesome. I didn't even go, so I missed out altogether. but I think the club did a good job.
two, about the warlocks' sound, yes the drum beat is very strong, but not harsh, which is their main attraction. really really great percussion. bobby's voice is very weak and often not on key but I think that adds to it for me, because the drum beat and the guitars are so strong and powerful, I like that it's imperfected by the weak vocals, it makes it more interesting. but they're the sweetest boys anyways, a talented bunch. they have an awesome sound in my opinion
three, since I missed the shows this weekend, I'll be going up to NYC tomorrow. I'd offer to review it for you all but you know my opinion is biased and you know what I'll say. I'll try and get a set list
cannot WAIT to see those boys...I love them to death....and goddamn do I love new york...I'm so happy :D who wants to come with us??

couldn't agree more. I was talking about the simultaneous drums at the show...totally makes their sound.

I'm a little disappointed.
"One six-pack of beer (NO hard liquor)"
Where are the demands for a bowl of M&M's with all the brown ones removed?
Or at least a request for an eight-ball, a 3-foot tank of medical-grade nitrous, and a half-dozen women of easy virtue?
Rock'n Roll just ain't what it used to be....

My 11th grade English teacher (a former member of DC new-wave band Tiny Desk Unit) actually performed the M & M task for the Ramones before a 930 show in the late 70's/early 80's. He quit.
