Title: A Mighty Wind
Post by: rich_WDC on September 21, 2003, 11:53:00 am
Any idea how the audience is supposed to react to the folk/fauxk acts?
What's the protocol/scene at normal folk concerts? (I do rocknroll)
Any thoughts as to whether the groups tonight expect us to be in on their joke, or is everything method-acting, incl. the crowd?

If you were dumb enough to pay $40 for this show, you should be able to act however you like.

It was actually a lot of fun.

 And Jennifer Coolidge was there.

The actors did a great job, and the crowd loved every minute of it.  And then some.

So you can speak for everybody in the crowd for every minute of the show......Quite impressive.

Actually, I don't think I'd spend $40 for any show, but given the choice of spending it on Mighty Wind, Jewell, or Marlilyn Manson, Might Wind would win by a longshot.

Sorry for my initial snotty comment.

I can

 and they did

you people that decide that other people shouldn't enjoy a show because you decided it wasn't worth the ticket are really quite miserable

Watch out everybody, when you attend a show at Seth's club, he can speak for you.

How close is it to selling out tonight?

I'd go see the show again in heartbeat if  it ever came around these parts again.  It was that good...

I went to the early show. I thought the show was great. One of the most entertaining shows I have been to in a long time. The crowd was really into the show, I think even the actors were surprised at the audience reaction. They looked a bit shocked when they came out on stage and everyone was screaming. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and yes it was well worth the $40.

Also one of the longest door lines I have ever seen at the 930 Club.

It seems like this show would have been more well suited for a theater?

I wonder if the performers had a preference for playing a rock club?

The performance felt like theater. However I think the performance would be no where near as good in a theater. I just don't think you would get the same atmosphere in a theater. I think the audience reaction in a theater would have been much more subdued, which I think would have made for a much weaker show.

At the early show they didn't do any by themselves, they went off stage and the entire cast came back on for one song and that was it.

Please forgive me, Guiny.  I didn't mean to speak for you.  Please feel free to share with us your thoughts on the performance.  I would hate to think that the deafening roar of the crowd before and after each act and song led me to an incorrect assumption.

I agree, it made for a really energetic show, and the music is not all that energetic on its own.  It would have been a lot 'slower' and more subdued at the Warner Theater, say.

Great show, though these Sunday night shows are real killers (hence all of my show mates cancelled on me).

From time to time people mention audience reaction, like oh, the crowd was so lame, nobody wasa dancing, etc...I myself don't see what a big deal the audience reaction is...I go to see the band/act, not the audience! I like when the audience is as unobtrusive as possible, myself...

I was in closer range, though, and they were definitely encroaching on  my space with their spastic dance moves...I guess the crowd does add to the entertainment, or memories, at least, in some ways...

so I guess instead of blanking it out, he's conjuring up memories of it when it wasn't played...it is awful, though...he did it at BUmbershoot and I think that's about when me and the other Rhett Miller left!

I just think that the peformers fed off of the audience. Call it ego call it energy, whatever you want. A good crowd can help the act push the performance to another level. You can define good however you want. I think of it as appropriate for the act you are seeing. Last nights crowd was appropriate for the act.

The audience reaction is a useful tool for explaining the general reaction to a show.  That is, to show how the bulk of people responded to a show rather than just how the individual writing the review felt.

If people are talking amongst themselves, it's an indication that the show was a little dull.  If the crowd is going crazy, the show was probably pretty good.  It's an art not a scince mind you.

I think it's more of an indication of the decline in politeness in our society...I mean a few words whispered here and there and somewhat acceptable, but whole coversations at standard voice level are just rude

I think the crowd makes a big difference.  Nothing more off-putting than really loving a band, and being surrounded by a bunch of hipsters with their arms crossed across their chests, too cool to smile or tap their feet.  Big buzz kill, and makes you very self-conscious about jiggling about in your space.

I'm not saying I prefer chaos and mania -- I also go to see the band, not have a "rockin' night out,' but a lively crowd can really make a show.  It made a big difference last night (that show could have been a snooze if the crowd watched with detached interest), as well as the Sex Pistols show.

But this is why you may like shows at the Birchmere way more than I do....

Rhett did Bowie at the Kennedy Center.

He did Elvis (Presley) at the Black Cat most recently.

He did the Pixies the first time at Black cat.

Bags, we have only been to one show in 2.5 yrs at Birchmere. That was BR549, and the crowd got pretty raucous. But it was in keeping with the performance. I think they have the no audience noise rule because most of the acts that play there are "quiet" acts, not loud rock and roll acts. Thus, quiet acts should call for a quiet audience. If you're seeing a band that plays loud music, well by all means the audience should make some noise.

Can't say I have.  But I imagine it would suck to get hit in the head by a crowd surfer with cowboy boots.
