Will DC survive the hippie onslaught?
-
Pitchfork announced the Roots Picnic tour this morning, and the Green Apple Festival is the DC date. I hope this means that we also get the likes of Gnarls Barkley, Deerhoof, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Santogold and Diplo.
-
I was on the Green Apple Website, and I didn't see anything confirmed for the DC venue yet. However, I might be changing my plans for that weekend.

Nice.

Does anyone have a better idea of who (if anyone) might be playing on the mall on 4/20?
The Green Apple web site now has bands listed. The way I am reading this, basically every band at every venue within 60 miles of DC from 4/17 to 4/20 is part of the "Green Apple". There is no indication that any of these bands (Mule, Toots, UM, for example) are playing anything other than their regularly scheduled gigs.

Looks to me like they're all playing on the mall on 4/20.
Oh and I'm seeing Autechre on 4/17 and Gary Higgins on 4/19 and neither of those have anything to do with this thing so your hypothesis is wrong.

Are you sure? The last I checked, Gary Higgins was all about being green.
-
It looks like NYC, Chicago, and San Fran have some good artists playing that would make me want to attend, but the DC lineup sucks.
-
haha

how do they expect to pull off a green apple festival without green apple quickstep???
-
IAmHydrogen has a very valid point here... At this juncture only DC has announced who will be playing free on April 20th.
-
Well that's all we really care about, right?

Aren't the free shows on the mall all there is or am I missing something?

Tragedy: A Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees really sold you on the NYC show?
-
IF you look at the shows listing on the DC page, it looks like area concerts are part of the event. There were a few shows (Cloud Cult, etc.) that aren't on the mall but are part of the event.

I see.
I guess Cloud Cult being a part of it makes sense.

But are they actually apart of the festival or just what ever happens to already have been scheduled...
and i'm pretty sure it was Dot Dot Dot that won over Charlie...

per Gov't Mule's mailing list:
Gov't Mule
Toots & The Maytalls
The Roots
Umphrey's McGee
Theivery Corporation
& more
-
per green apple's website (http://www.greenapplemusicfestival.com//index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=15&Itemid=32): starting at noon on 4/20, on the national mall:
Free Live Bands!
The Roots & Friends
Gov't Mule
Toots & The Maytals
Thievery Corporation (DJ Set)
Warren Haynes Solo Acoustic
Umphreys McGee
DC Boys Choir
CityDance
Speakers:
to be announced....stay tuned!
(guess about the speakers: they'll all be black, in boxes, on either side of the stage, and will allow folks far away to hear the bands. dunno why they need to "announce" that)
-
Other than Umphreys McSchwag, that lineup is sick for a free concert
-
Hip-Hop band The Roots are among the headliners of eight simultaneous, free Earth Day 2008 concerts organizers have announced.
On Sunday, April 20, The Roots along with Ricky Skaggs, The Neville Brothers, Los Lonely Boys and Mickey Hart from The Grateful Dead, are headlining free concerts in Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, Dallas, New York, Chicago and Denver.
The Roots will headline the flagship event in front of the U.S. Capitol building, along with other invited speakers, including the Rev. Jesse Jackson, members of congress and even a possible presidential candidate.
The purpose of Earth Day 2008 is to raise awareness about climate change, global warming and each individuals relationship and impact on the environment.
"This Earth Day, itâ??s time to change the forecast for global warming," said Kathleen Rogers, President of Earth Day Network. "Climate change must rise to the top of the national agenda this election year. On April 20th, Americans will be hearing our global warming message and we will be mobilizing support for solutions."
Over 1,000 colleges are also involved in the day-long celebration, which also includes hundreds of community events that are expected to attract hundreds of thousands of participants.
The Earth Day Network has a network of over 17,000 partners and organizations in 174 countries.
More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities, making it one of the largest secular civic events in the world.
The Rootsâ?? newest album Rising Down is due in stores April 29 on Island Def Jam.

I am so excited to post a photo of an alien smoking a joint on 4/20. Seriously, I live for this shit.
-
Man, I can't even wait anymore. There really isn't anything better than looking at this with a black light on. Maybe having some trance playing in the background. Ibiza '98 compilation or something.

Turns out I have friends coming up from FL for this festival (and to visit lovely DC in lovely April). As of today, the Post didn't have an artist schedule. A lot of this lineup isn't really up my alley, but I'd like to join them for at least Thievery Corporation.
If anyone finds a schedule, could you post it here?
THANKIE
-
the best i can find is this (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?node=cityguide/profile&id=1148440&categories=Miscellaneous%20Events&venueid=1025752?hpid=cityguide), which only indicates that jordin sparks goes on first at noon, and the roots play at/around 6. with scattered t-storms forecasted for sunday, not sure i wanna hang out on the mall all day for this.
-
It's just Thievery Corporation's dj set they're interested in...I'll do some googling and see what I can find!
-
It look like the weather is not going to be good... weatherchannel.com says thunderstorms.
Anyone know if they are going to cancel?
-
The weather might not be good, but it is not stopping this guy below from strutting.
<img src="http://www.your3dsource.com/walkingpotleaf_b.gif" alt=" - " />
-
any word if this is still going on? the green apple website is kaput.
-
I stayed until about 3. and then it started raining hard
The show was still going on when i left, so i don't know if it got canceled yet. When i heard thunder on my way to the metro station, i was thinking they were definitely going to call it off.

Nope. Unfortunately.
O.A.R., Mambo Sauce, Umphrey's, and Warren Haynes played. I feel like I'm forgetting something, but that's what I remember.
