Title: Rock And Roll Hotel
Post by: serpent boy on March 23, 2008, 02:24:00 pm
Hey everyone,

Can I get some reviews of the Rock and Roll Hotel? Who's been there and what did you think?

I'm heading there tomorrow night for the first time to check out Nicole Atkins (and I'll be at Ambulance LTD and Local H soon), and I've read mixed reviews of the venue.

Some say it's a sketchy neighborhood (dodging crack dealers, nothing but barred up liquor stores around); others vehemently defend it. Some say the sound is WAY too loud; others say it's great. Some say parking is inaccessible; others say it's readily available on the well-lit streets. What's the verdict?

I'll probably be driving, but I'm a terrible parallel parker. Am I in for an adventure?

Finally, if the venue says show at 8:30, do they mean opening band hits the stage at 8:30, headliner at 9:30? Or are they pulling a Black Cat on us (8:30 means show starts at 9:30 - maybe)?

 Thanks!

The place is nice once you get inside.  It is not in a good part of town, go with a group and you'll be fine though.  I wouldn't go solo or anything.

It is in an "emerging" neighborhood.  Think the 930 club like 9 years ago.  I go by myself all the time, have no problem finding parking right on H street as long as I get there early.  Just be smart.  I'm so tired of people saying "don't go alone!"

As for the venue itself, it kinda sucks.  Get there early, stay by the front of the stage and vigilantly guard your space.  Otherwise you won't be able to see, it will sound pretty bad and you'll be too distracted by people pushing through you to pay attention to the music.  If you want a drink, get it early.

I think the theme here is do everything early.  :)

The area doesn't bother me at all but definitely get there early for parking (kinda hard, I had to park 3 blocks away last time). I also agree that you need to get there early esp. during a sold out show or you will never see the performers (stage is low). I love the acoustics at this venue - it's better than the Black Cat's.

I'll be at Nicole Atkins as well.

tony williams lives there now! (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/12/AR2008031204059.html)

it's really not that bad of a neighborhood, can just be kind of deserted at times, which seems a little creepy ... doesn't seem any worse than U street area to me

some of the best bars in the city are over there, lately been loving granville moore's

EDIT -- and R&R's second floor is far-and-away better than their concert space, it's too bad they wiffed so badly at getting a good space for shows, because they almost perfected the "bar" part on the second floor

My ears are still ringing from the Sons and Daughters show.  I dont like the neighborhood, but it is what it is.

Jebus christ you pussy, just get in your car and go there.  Nobody's gonna kill you.  One of the things that used to make indie music interesting was a sense of the unknown and discovery, whatever happened to that?

Have a question that no one I know seems to know the answer to -- is it OK to park in the lot of the Auto Zone on H St.?  There are signs up saying that you have to be a customer to park there, but on Thurs/Fri/Sat nights the lot is always packed.

As for R&R Hotel itself, I'd agree with the above poster -- they got the idea right, but not the execution.  There's a stretch of about 15 square feet in the room where you can stand and both (A) see the band, and (B) get pretty good sound.  If you're anywhere else, you're kinda screwed.

Haha.

Decided not to go at the last minute.
Germantown->DC is a bitch of a trip to have to make 3 nights in a row as I'm sure you know.
And I'll definitely be doing it next weekend.

If I were coming from Germantown, I would come in through the underbelly of the city, taking Clara Barton Pkwy - Whitehurst - K St - 15th - U St - Vermont - 930 Club, but that's just me.

The last time I was at R&R Hotel was October of last year for the DAM Festival. I did go there in when it 1st open in September 2006 and their 1st year party. I love the atmosphere inside and they do have a good food menu.

If he were truly indie, he's be carless, he'd be living in the neighborhood and would walk to the show. And he would tell everyone "Nothing has ever happened to me, so nothing is going to happen to you."

Neat little place. The sound is not the greatest, but I like the atmosphere. I found parking right across the street, and the area isn't nearly as bad as some say it is. My girlfriend and I enjoyed the show, and I'm looking forward to going back for the Ambulance show.

 Thanks for the tips, everyone.

It's a nice place, but it can get really obnoxious during a sold out show.  I.E. follow everyone's advice and get there early or else you will be unpleasantly cramped in the back and won't be able to see anything.
Sound is iffy; the last time I was at the Hotel it was some of the worst I have ever heard at a show.  But at this point, they book many of the bands that used to play the Cat so I take what I can get...

They upgraded the sound like a month or so ago. Much much better

New sound/lights and larger stage with sight-lines improved due to removal of non-weigh-bearing pillars  up front.  The advice to get there early and go with a wing-woman/man to guard your "spot" is good:  At a show last weekend, the crowd showed up late for the headliners and proceeded to try to jam everyone standing for HOURS up front out of the way.  Pretty obnoxious crowd but I guess that depends on the line-up. If anyone is nervous about parking/leaving, the security staff will provide an escort to your car.  Also, I think they're still running a shuttle bus from the Union Station metro so you might want to call to confirm that.  Nice, attentive bartenders; upstairs lounges are great hangouts before/after music and security is present without being overbearing! They are very strict about underage drinking.

had tix to the Gruff Rhys show but didn't go, the neighborhood has destracted me from going to the venue.  I would assume the shows end on the late side, there's no way I'd walk around there late at night - but hey that's DC, low rent = the dodgy parts of the city.

rob curtis is overrated. he does have a great ear, but he created a sound system at the velvet lounge that was more complicated than it should have been. and he also has personal issues that affected his relationships with not only band members but staff as well.

we (the velvet lounge) are in great shape. we hired marcus esposito, who ran sound at the warehouse and who has been one of the best freelance soundmen in the city for years. nikhil ranade, who does sound at the black cat and runs his own studio, is helping out. and we have hired two more competent soundmen with experience. the sound is as good as before, if not better.

I know the question was asked awhile ago, but in my experience, it's been really difficult to get cabs after shows.  I've even called for cabs, and they've taken up to an hour to arrive or sometimes never came at all, and it's been through sheer luck (and a helpful staff) that I've managed to get home.  I like the venue and think they get a lot of great shows, but I've only been to a fraction of the shows I've wanted to because I just don't feel comfortable enough being able to get home as a young female, often alone, relying solely on public transportation.

Up to my old tricks...I've been in the same situation: Caught downtown without cabs.  It's within the "law" to call Virginia cab companies to get a ride.  They cannot cruise downtown, but they can come get you if you call.  Cell calls are fine!  Yellow Cab (owner also owns Red Top) will come get you:  Two hour notice gets you a "timed call".  Wait time downtown WITHOUT a "timed-call" - even during rush hour - is usually no longer than 30 or so minutes after you phone 'em:  Yellow Cab 703-534-1111.

"Welcome to the weird post-post-punk world of England's latest art-rock buzz band, a place where glowing globes mingle with references to 16th-century occultists and numerology. Synthesizer player Sophie Sleigh-Johnson, 19, chooses to write notes on a small pad rather than answer questions verbally, while bassist Thomas Hein, 21, simply walks away when approached. The two who do talk, frontman Jack, 20, and his twin brother, George (drums), reveal some curious inspirations. "Making music is like casting spells," George offers. "Musician and magician are similar words. It's better to take a small idea, like numerology, and make it mean something, rather than to take something like death or love and make it meaningless." - Spin

Showstopper, are you sure the Field show is still happening? I just read that Cleveland and Chicago were cancelled due to visa issues.

But...

 Is it happening?

I don't want to go down there and find another Caribou scenario (Fuck Buttons did deliver but still...).

His myspace lists his next show as being 6/13. That can't be a good sign.

None of the US dates made it to his myspace page (it was never updated). Go to the Windish agency site, the DC date is no longer there.

i wouldn't expect a reply from showstopper, he doesn't actually participate in this forum.  he flies by, shits an e-flyer, then leaves... the seagull approach to street-teaming.
