Title: digitalism @ dc9 roll call
Post by: sweetcell on March 23, 2008, 10:19:00 pm
i'm in (despite showstopper's lame e-flyer).  so far i know that joe will make a late appearance, callat703 is on board, azaghal is a maybe - anyone else?  unsubstantiated rumors claim that a certain person of directorial stature may be in attendance... TBD.

xneverwherex - how was digitalism in NYC on saturday?

i have an extra ticket, if anyone needs one - PM me (i can get PMs on my phone, so send me your cell# if the show sells out at the door and you can't get in).  speaking of tix, i'm surprised that this hasn't sold out yet.  DC9 holds what, 150 people max?  so either this show will sell out at the door, or they're selling more tickets than the place can hold... i refuse to believe that this town can't muster up enough people to fill dc9, even on a weeknight.

Is this show all ages?

unfortunately all shows at DC9 are 21+.

i think that this should still sell out even without the 20- crowd.  we'll find out tomorrow.

*raises hand*

i know people who bought tickets today ... pretty amazing that tickets are still available, especially because i've talked to two people who are going with two, separate, good-sized groups (and i really don't know that many people)

eek weeknight.

i bought tickets when it was first announced.. what time you think this show will end?

i'm thinking of starting to grease the gears of my planned "illness".. my co-workers can live without me for a day.

I cant imagine seeing this show at a place as small at DC9. I believe Webster Hall sold out the same night or right before. It was insanely crowded with wall-to-wall people.

Guns n Bombs opened the set (at least i think that was the DJ). He had a good solid set for at least an hour. He got the crowd dancing. It was pretty empty at this point, so most of us had almost a full dance floor to dance. Some of the stuff worked more than others, but by 9pm the crowd was a frenzy and everyone was beginning to dance.

I think Digitalism was on close to 9;15 or so and words cant describe the show. From the minute of the first beat - the crowd was just loving it. Everyone was dancing from the moment it began (and they say people in NYC dont dance! if DC doesnt dance ill be dumbfounded). By the time Pogo came on (about the 4th or 5th song) the crowd was a frenzied nightmare. Everyone jumping in unison during the chorus - it felt like there was a tidal wave at webster hall. for those having seen shows here, just imagine the floor at its worst when youre sure at any minute the floor is going to collapse.

I got molested on the dance floor with some guy nearly trying to f*** me on it which was insanity enough as I was trying to push him off of me and dance at the same time. A friend of mine ended up helping push the guy off of me.

"departure from cairo" sounded really solid - with the crowd all singing along to it 'f-i-r-e-i-n-c-a-i-r-o'. Each song sounded better than the previous.

The encore was pretty cool - but being that ive been at shows all weekend - i have no clue what it was. but when i have a chance ill post my pics of the stage at webster hall. Id say nearly half the floor was on the stage dancing. Security wasnt pulling anyone down and it made the dance floor a perfect spot to dance your ass off for the final song.

It was an awesome show. It'd be cool to see them with about 150 people, but theres something about seeing them in a crowded club with everyone dancing like there was no tomorrow. i left the show soaking wet - which was not desirable as i was headed to holy fuck right after - but i wouldnt trade it for the world.

the only thing i was disappointed at (and this really has nothing to do with the show) is that the guy who normally walks around with water and beer was nowhere to be found. damn! at least at lcd soundsystem he was there.

cant wait to hear about the show in DC. I am dying to go down there and see it again but im worried it'd ruin my experience.

oh and the show was roughly an hour, maybe a little more.

xNWx, thanks for the recap - much appreciated.  as if i needed additional reason to be excited about tonight!

pure guesstimate:
 9:30 people's champion
 10:00 g'n'b
 11:00 digitalism
over around midnight.  100% unconfirmed - i've sent an e-mail to DC9 inquiring about set times, i'll post any replies that i get here.

recommendation: bring ear plugs.  DC9 can be pretty damn loud.  i dropped in on a show there saturday night and didn't have my etymotics with me.  couldn't last more than 15 minutes up there.  admittedly, this was a hard rock/punk/metal band so loud and obnoxious was de rigueur, but thought i should throw out the warning anyways.

Firecode is 180, but we had about 260 when we booked Brian Jonestown Massacre there a couple years ago. So 200 is a given...

interesting, thanks for the info.  is 180 both floors, or upstairs only?

and unless digitalism really isn't doing it for me (doubtful), looks like i'll be cabbing it back to silver spring.  if anyone wants to share (or can offer a ride), please PM me.

medium version: digitalism, hoya, thedirector + bnyced = awesome (and some amount of damage... tbd in the morning)

long version: details tomorrow - suffice to say that i can't see how DC had any better entertainment on offer tonight... true story. seeing a full-on tour bus parked in front of DC9 = priceless.

tonight = why i go to live shows  :)

good times, great meeting all of you ... anyone get the full story on what went down after the show with the bartender and the bat and the cops?

i expected little from the opening DJ, People's Champion, but he delivered more.  fun danceable beats.

i expected more from guns'n'bombs, but they delivered less.  as far as i could tell only one of the two/three was spinning.  he was ok, but didn't do a whole lot for me.  spent his set chatting with afore-mentioned crazies.

i expected a lot from digitalism, and they delivered.  upstairs at DC9 was packed, and the crowd did a decent job at dancing up a storm (considering it's DC    ;)   ).  the floor was woobling to the beat under the weight of all the dancers jumping in unison, a little worrysome at time.  kinda disappointed that we didn't rate an encore.

no further info on what happened outside... maybe i'll ask ross (of 930 staph fame) next time i see him, he was talking with the bartender at the time.

i had an absolute blast last night - great music, fun dancing and even better company.  this morning was indeed on the rough side.  a chipotle burrito and a bottle of water will hopefully put me back in shape...

i'm surprised you didn't complain about it being too packed as you usually do.

the floor was indeed soft in spots.  i noticed this during the open acts.  the spot we settled upon for the main act was solid as a rock.

again there were some pushy buffoons upfront but test of will was nowhere as acute as at the Justice show.

you just answered your own question (in as much as "i'm surprised..." was a question    :p   )

did you enjoy the show?  thought?  observations?

I was worried about the floor thing, and that thought was in the back of my mind during Digitalism set, but it was a great night. This morning I definitely payed the price with a huge hangover

I have the flu so my senses are dulled...
I thought the show as a lot of fun for a Monday night.  I felt like I was sitting at a chef's table being so close to the band.  I felt after the beginning the lead singer hammed up his German accent for the effect.  Next time, I might not stand so close to the front.  The backup singer kept fiddling this small touch sensitive tablet-like instrument with moving LEDs.  I couldn't link that to changes in the music.  Anybody know what the instrument is?

"backup singer" - LOL.  he did provide occasional vocals, but i wouldn't call him a backup singer.  definitely wasn't his prime role up there.

i can't recall what the name of the midi triggering device that you're referring to, it'll come to me.  he was using it to trigger samples and loops in upcoming measures, so the effects of what he was doing wouldn't be heard immediately.

I wasn't there, but I'm willing to bet it was a KORG Chaos Pad

nope, definitely not a kaos pad - that name i can remember.

what he was playing was almost exactly like a Yamaha Tenori-On (link 1 (http://www.glumbert.com/media/tenorion),  link 2 (http://tenori-on.yamaha-europe.com/uk/),  link 3 (http://www.global.yamaha.com/tenori-on/)).  sort of like a rhythmic lite-brite    :)      i scoped the gear when i first got to DC9, but the stage was quite dark so i couldn't see it very well.  the reason why i say "almost exactly" is because the lights on digitalism's contraption were red - and every tenori-on i've ever seen has white LEDs.  so either digitalism has a custom tenori-on, or it's something else.  yamaha can't make tenori-ons fast enough, so it would almost certainly have to be an after-market custom job if it is in fact a tenori-on.

i was right up in front of pad guy but I can no longer remember the proportions of the tablet.

what i remember bears a strong resemblance to the Kaoss 3 Pad, perhaps with less instrumentation around the LEDs:

As you suggest, with their access, they could have a custom job or something high end we've never heard of.

I call him "backup singer" because although he had very little to sing, at one point seem frantic about the lack of sound in his mike and waved for the sound engineer(s) to up the volume.

I'll be another person to note the floor buckling under the pressure of the jumping and dancing but - wow!  what a show!  a total DIY techno blast.
