It's nice to see so many people saying Bowie. Sadly, I think he is done touring for good, which sucks because I never got to see my favorite artist live.
-
I doubt Bowie is finished touring for good. You may still have a chance.
He is incredible live.

It would convince me to drag my ass up to Baltimore the week after Lollapalooza.

Oh hell yes

Yeah but since he had the heart scare I think he is afraid of dying and doesn't want to take the chance while he has a young daughter.
I frequent Bowie message boards, most seem to doubt a tour, but alot of people hope/think he may do a couple one off gigs or a mini tour. Hopefully that turns out to be true one day. I would pay hundreds of dollars to see him live.

Good God, are you serious? The two bands you "need to see" more than any others are Offspring and Jamiroquai!?!??!?!? Are you clincally retarded? What would the third band be? Sum 41? Bowling for Soup? Third Eye Blind?

I was thinking the same thing, but didn't want to implicitly mock my Jamirroquai loving wife!
I think Brian and ggw are neck and neck for Post of the Week.

The Verve

I think Seth's comment could be read as a hint that Offspring will be headlining VFest...or maybe Jamiroquai as well (which would be totally cool)

I'm tempted, as I can't wait to enjoy the uber-hip forumites declaring how they're going to travel halfway across the country for the one band that makes them so much cooler than those who are "retarded"
-
you better keep em seperated
-
I'm very sorry for using the term "retarded." It was rude and insensitive of me to use that word and I sincerely apologize.
I wish the best of luck to those putting together V-fest 2008. It has to be a Sysiphean, thankless task. I also hope that everyone attending has a blast, enjoys the bands/artists and travels safe.

Queens of the Stone Age are playing the Toronto V Fest.
-
Stray Cats. They are doing a farewell to Europe tour that starts mid August.
-
wow, i return to read so much hate...
i can understand why hipsters might laugh at the offspring - i don't agree, but i understand. but jamiroquai? really? i didn't realize there was an ironic-t-shirt-brigade fatwa against them. then again, they do make people dance - which isn't a very popular activity with that set :p
jamiroquai played the 9:30 at least once, back in '97 or '98 i think... everyone that i've spoken to who was at that show raves about that night. i'm willing to bet that they still bring the funk.

really? i thought ggw's reply was leagues better than brian's... not that my assessment counts for anything in this thread, apparently.
-
I haven't listened to them in years, but that Jamiroquai show at the 9:30 was pretty fantastic. I've never seen the Offspring but don't feel any real need to. Frankly, I just wish Queens of the Stone Age would come back and do 2 shows at 9:30.

Me too :( But they rule festival crowds with an iron fist.
Add EODM to my wishlist, their new album hits this summer.

I was there and remember the same thing. A great time. I can't ever remember a more eclectic mix of people at the club than that night. They also did a show at a 1/4 full Patriot Center that (aside from lousy sound in the building) was possibly even more fun because there was more room to dance.
I actually wore my Jamiroquai t-shirt to the gym today.
-
maybe Jamiroquai and co are better live these days, as i found their recorded material increasing insipid and lacking in the songwriting deparment... i can only take so much of steve wonder lite
got a good concert story through... on their first US tour well before the hit, they had a buy the CD see the show for free promo.. so it was like what the heck...
anyways about half way through the show, the group next to me sparks up one of those funny cigarettes, which draws the attention of the bands road manager. who then motions them to meet him at the side of stage. some sort of exchange goes down and moments later Jay has a much bigger version of one of those funny cigarettes in his hands, while the digerdoo player jammed on...
-
i saw Jamiroquai and the Offspring within 3 hours of each other, at Woodstock 99.
Jamiroquai > Offspring

while I'm a huge Manic Street Preachers fan, I hate to say this but I really don't think they no longer have a big US fanbase anymore - of course I could be wrong.

i fully support you on that one. he played at HFStival back in 2005 (? the one at m&t bank stadium) and he ruled. he's a great front man, and did a halirious job of riding the line between being really pretentious + and self-absorbed; and being self-aware and self-mocking. i'd be excited to see billy in the line-up. oh, rhett and joe will be happy to learn that despite being in his late 50s, he's still totally rippped. really played it up for the ladies :)

Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters and Nine Inch Nails. 3 Main Headliners. If NIN doesn't get announced for V Festival they will be back when NIN does a second leg of their USA tour in October/November.
-
My bets are on NIN, too. Mark the giant gap in their schedule that puts them almost certainly in the area for travel anyways:
August 8 Worcester MA DCU Center
August 12 Knoxville TN Knoxville Civic Coliseum

Hmm, not sure how I feel about the headliners. Last year, I was thrilled to see all the big names (Pumpkins, Police, Beastie Boys, Interpol). This year, it's kind of a big "eh."
Foo Fighters - I enjoy them, but they're not all that special. The live show is basically always the same - a lot of Grohl screaming, same old setlist, maybe a few acoustic songs. Foo Fighters are like Will Ferrell movies.
Stone Temple Pilots - I'm a big fan, and I loved them when I saw them at the NorVa in 2002, but I fear they'll play nothing but the hits. I also don't think they have that special something about them that the Pumpkins do (whether you like Corgan or not). If they play "Atlanta," the tickets will be worth it.
Kanye West - Ugh. Please book someone good on the other stage.
Jack Johnson - Ditto. I might watch a couple of songs, but I sure as hell am not excited to see him.
Nine Inch Nails - Interesting. Not quite the Woodstock '94 festival darlings any more, but I'm still very interested in seeing them. I wonder how much of Ghosts he'll plug into the set.
Let's hope that Seth brings the goods for the rest of the lineup because the headliners aren't quite worth $200 or more.
-
done

on to the next one....
-
I'm going to avoid Jack Johnson and Kanye like the plague, but hopefully there are good bands on the other stage as competition. Gotta see the full lineup.
Bloc Party could close the second stage across from Kanye or Jack Johnson on the main stage, and I'd be pretty down with that.

God dam it. How sad is it to say NIN and Kanye are the best things headlining.
And here I really didn't want to go to APW, but 2 nights of Radiohead > Jack Johnson, Kanye, FOo Fighters, STP, and NIN. But there's still the full line-up to see.
Sorry, Seth.

The headliners are a real bargain for 200$, but clearly on this board they aren't worth 200$. Im hoping the dance tent is bumping for both nights ebcause Im not watching any of the headliners.
-
I went last year but I doubt I'll be going this time.
-
i went the last two years and i thought there was no way i wasnt gonna go this year, but thats a real bummer.
-
I'm still keeping the faith for the other 60 acts or whatever... I enjoyed the under card last year a lot more than the headliners.
This year may be the same. CSS, YYYs, PBJ, LCD Soundsystem and TV on the Radio were all highlights last year - and they certainly weren't headliners.
Buck up kids.
-

Yeah, just because we might not like some of the headliners doesn't mean the thing is a total bomb-out. If the bands playing on the other stage across from the headliners are good, I don't personally care if the titular headliners are sub-par.
EDIT: Not to mention a Kanye or Jack Johnson headlining set would be a perfect time to see the dance tent. If the headliner is a "must see" then we're probably missing some awesome dance act like Underworld or whoever. The point is, with lots of options, we have to see the full lineup before writing this off.
-
Kanye West rips off Eminem rhyme style.
yes, i said it.
-
..
-
lol
-
Kanye West sucks. I would pay to NOT see him perform. I would much rather have someone else. looks like I am going to be skipping him at Bonnaroo and V fest.
Im not a Foo fan, but I am glad to be able to see NIN and Jack Johnson again, and to be able to see STP for the first time.
Hopefully, the rest of the lineup is better. Maybe some MGMT, Tegan and Sara, DCFC, or Black Kids.
-
Blast furnace August heat......this lineup......nope......maybe next year....
-
Umm...yeah, I really want to be in a hot, sweaty dance tent in mid-day 100 degree heat...no thanks.
Kanya sucks, but seeing a rant is always a treat.
Jack Johnson just makes me queasy. :p

pendulum and deadmau5 would be worth the price of admission alone or dont you know who they are???
-
Guys, guys, guys. Keep your heads up. Has the board been really happy with the headliners in the past? Maybe Smashing Pumpkins last year, I guess. Anyway, there are definitely gonna be some bands worth seeing that easily beat out the headliners (for most of us here anyway).
And, IN MY OWN OPINION, STP will be a sick act to see and Jack Johnson tours with an incredible band and they put on an incredible show.
-
I can see the other bands being like MGMT and Vampire Weekend, Rogue Wave, and crap like that. Just like all the other festivals with the same bands.
-
Which isn't bad because I like those bands haha.
-
I really hope Underworld pops in Saturday. I have ALWAYS wanted to see them.
I think Muse, QOTSA, Vampire Weekend, Bloc Party, Metric, Feist, and Kings Of Leon are all also possibilities.

I hope this year's festival is a big success - I want it to remain in Baltimore. I'll probably like future lineups down the line. I had a good time at the last two. I just don't really like the headliners this year. As headliners, I'll take the Beastie Boys and Modest Mouse and the Police over Kanye West and Jack Johnson any day. And can someone tell me when the Stone Temple Pilots stopped being the laughing stock of music, the derivative of all bad radio rock, the bane of the musical world, the Creed-before-there-was-a-Creed....and started becoming acceptable to people other than the fratboy crowd? It seems that their return is being welcomed by many. I may have missed a memo on this one.
-
I saw Kanye at whfs festival at Merrieweather and I thought he was pretty good. Maybe thats just me. But I was impressed.
-
I saw Velvet Revolver at HOB, and I adore NIN but I'll pass for the heat. Not a bad lineup, just nothing to pull me in.
however if the Swell Season get booked, I will have no choice but to go. :3
-
Yeah I saw Velvet Revolver last year at the vfest. Pretty much same as STP will be this year. Not too shabby.
-
STP is the first headliner I have really disliked in the now 3rd of the festival. Foo Fighters will put on a good show as will NIN. What I have liked most about Virgin the last 2 years is the quality of acts for the whole day. I am hopeful both days will be filled in quite nicely. I think last year only The Police, Pumpkins and Beastie Boys were announced in the press release prior to the whole lineup coming out yet big time acts like Modest Mouse, 311 and Ben Harper ended up on the bill too.
-
i just realized that portishead was not mentioned. :)
-
not quite time for the commentary on the virgin festival lineup thread....
but in my own little happy world, Seth would book the Deflowered Fest at Merriweather.. so that all of the Virgin Fest second stage bands playing Sun would play at Merriweather on Sat and visa versa that way me and hopefully 5000 of my closest friends can enjoy some great music and lots of shade....
-
thats a trememdous idea!
it could be like Reading / Leeds festival.
Have two days, and have the bands switch venues, so that if you wanted Merriweather you could go there, if you wanted Pimlico, you could do that too.
oh neat!

I really hope Underworld pops in Saturday. I have ALWAYS wanted to see them.
I think Muse, QOTSA, Vampire Weekend, Bloc Party, Metric, Feist, and Kings Of Leon are all also possibilities.
See, I was really hoping if Muse was anounced that they'd be one of the headliners... I think a mid day show from Muse would blow. Granted they are still MIND bending live, but a lot of it comes from their killer light show.
I second most of your choices. Queens would burn my soul and so would Kings and Vampire Weekend is constantly playing in my car and head.
-
In terms of other bands or artists I still am hoping for maybe...
List of dream bands/artists that would be cool to see somwhere in the line up (in no order in particular): AC/DC, David Bowie, Prince (but wouldn't Prince, Bowie and AC/DC be headliners though?), Flight of the Conchords (that's right I said it), JAMC, Motorhead, Underworld (for the dance tent), Chemical Brothers (might as well say them for the dance tent too), The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (since they've been doing a few reunion gigs here and there), Madonna (she does have a new album coming out soon), Portishead, The Cult, Love and Rockets, ZZ Top, Dwight Yoakum, Willie Nelson and Blur.
Realistically what I would like to see (as in these bands seem more possible than not): Oasis, The Verve, Vampire Weekend, QOFSTA or EODM (Either way Josh is going to be there), Muse, MGMT, She Wants Revenge, Be Your Own Pet, Kate Nash, The Black Keys, The Raveonettes or The Kills, Cat Power, Hot Chip (dance tent), The Cool Kids or Lupe Fiasco (it makes sense with Kanye being there), Spank Rock, Mars Volta, Against Me!, The Dirtbombs, Beach House (considering that they are from Baltimore), Mudhoney, Datarock (dance tent), Diplo (dance tent as well), Flogging Molly, Carbon/Silicon, The Raconteurs, Mark Ronson (most likely dance tent), Danny Tenaglia (dance tent again), Sasha and Digweed (dance tent), Gogol Bordello, Girl Talk (He was so much fun last year in the dance tent), The Hold Steady, Rancid and The Breeders.
Honestly if I get a combination of any of the mentioned above (both lists), I think I'd be pretty happy. Hell, I might even go to both days if I can pull it off!
ps- I really hope that Metallica aren't being booked. That would be like the snafu back in 1996 with them on Lollapalooza. But if they are, I just hope to avoid them.
-
you got a couple of those right
-
Hmm, perhaps we should take this list with the knowledge that a few of these are def. there, and systematically figure out which ones we either know for sure can't be, or or very very probably not, and we'll get something figured out.

"Couple" means two, technically. He listed like 40 bands. Seems like too much of an effort and there's no way we'd actually narrow it down sufficiently.
-
Thievery in the dance tent at the same time as Jack Johnson or Kanye's set would be PERFECT, btw.

I would just like to send out a mass "you are welcome" for getting you the lineup first...my PM box is full, so i understand if you don't show your gratitude...

We can start doing research. Granted, I'm a busy student so it'll be in my spare time with what little I got haha.
I have a feeling the best place to start are the bands listed under the second category which is the more reasonable band list. The first list I made was me thinking out of the box in terms of stuff that would make people say "Holy shit!" I always enjoy those sorts of surprises.
I think the best one Seth did in my opinion was the 2004 HFStival. I remember finding out that the Cure were headlining and I was like "OMG!" I called my sister and was like "We're going to see the Cure!" So even though the first category is unrealistic, don't rule anything out just yet except Portishead lol.

Dude, I'm a Girl! www.myspace.com/saintangelsin (http://www.myspace.com/saintangelsin)
And I know my music. I'm a dj at WMUC. Not to mention, I've been doing music journalism since I was 15. Back in high school, I used to have running bets with my sisters about who was going to play the HFStival each year. I predicted 2001 and 2003 correctly, which was pretty sweet. My point being is that there might be like five or six bands right out of that list. For all we know, more might be being booked right now.
And yes there are ways to figure that sort of stuff out. It's called looking at tour dates and other music festivals. I based a lot of my list from a few sources. I considered which bands are playing festivals and where, who all in music is really hot right now on the CMJ 200 Chart (that's the only real place for most Alternative Rock these days), what new albums are out or coming out, and which bands are touring or are rumored to be touring, ect.

I'll get you an application to join the posse. To begin, you can start collecting some things you'll need to attach to the appy: a headshot, a copy of your taxes, and a photo to confirm your jeans size.

Trust me, you do NOT want to get within fifty feet of Julian's "circle." He's just playing hard to get because he found out you are a female. If you don't want to hear someone pontificate endlessly about the "genius" of Billy Corgan and/or Hillary Clinton, then stay FAR away from Jules.
However, your list of concerts that you attended last year is pretty good. Very current. I'll even forgive you for liking the Cure. Everyone has a cross to bear. Everyone has something they should be ashamed of. Liking the Cure. That's yours.

Ah so it's because I'm a girl. Figures! I like Billy Corgan and Hillary Clinton, so perhaps Jules and I could get along. But I will take your word for it.
Thank you for liking my list of concerts. It's not that I try to be current. I just love listening to all sorts of stuff and if a band I really like is coming to town, I try to go see them. I really enjoy seeing live music. For me, going out to see bands play at the 9:30 Club or the Black Cat is far better than going to some college party with beer pong. I don't drink really. I'd prefer to rock out I suppose.
I think you're the first hip person to not give me too much flack over a few of the bands I've seen! So Thank you for that. And As for the cure, I didn't know it was more shameful to like them than say Justin Timberlake or Maroon Five. I usually get teased for being such a depeche mode fan so it's actually a nice change to be teased for liking Robert Smith. But anyway, Thank you for forgiving for liking the Cure.
-
she just called Brian Wallace hip. :p

I figured he's like one of those hipster type kids I work with at wmuc. By the way, I don't know what hip seriously is. I just figure he's some what of a musical elitist. Am I right on that?

unfortunately you're not. wallace has no musical opinion other than "IF IT'S MORE THAN 2 YEARS OLD IT'S AUTOMATICALLY PURE CRAP" (hence his indictment of your appreciation of the cure). of course he isn't serious about this opinion, it's just a shtick - one that the majority here wishes he'd update with some new material.
-
About the Chemical Brothers - I didn't realize that they have a crazy light show. I haven't seen them live unfortunately. So if that's the case, then good point. Chemical Brothers would be pretty damn sweet I must admit.
And now about Brian... Thank you sweetcell for the heads up. I figured there was something funny about him. I've seen the jokes around on the board before but just wasn't sure what the humor was exactly.
And believe me, I know there's no shame in liking the Cure. I was just being sarcastic. Really I wanted to go off about that, but that would've been unnecessary and a total waste of my time. He's not worth ranting at since this whole "i hate old music" thing is just a gimmick.
So should I get in Julian's circle? (just kidding)

I don't get that. I'm dead serious about my opinions. What makes you think this is all a "schtick?" I honestly believe blind nostalgia for Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, The Cure, etc. kills popular music and killed the music industry. You're all sheep to believe there is some sort of "alternative music canon." Keep it up. Or you'll wind up with a V-fest line-up that's a magical time warp to the wonderful world of 1996! I can't help it if I live in 2008.
They want to listen to Flo Rida on their cell phones. Not Lou f'ing Reed.

and if that was the message you got across, brian, i could respect that. but you don't take issue with people who worship only nostalgia - you go off everytime somebody mentions anything not made by an angry 19-year-old. it's as if anyone over 40 couldn't possibly produce good music. that's a blindness far worse than nostalgia worship. your logic that anyone who had a hit 10 years ago must automatically be unable to write good music today is faulty and prejudiced.

We all know he's a douche anyway...people like him just fill a quota for the board of trendy folks who think they're hip but instead are ignorant of what was made before they were 10 years old. They trash older people with different tastes simply because he doesn't value or identify with the things that came before him. He's like the rambunctious puppy who can't stop humping your leg. After a while he'll get housetrained, go to obedience school and then go find a chew toy to pleasure him in his older age.

1.) Your argument makes no sense. Their "track record colors my judgement?" WTF? Thank you pimply, Pitchfork critic. Thank God you weren't on a debate team or anything. You'd suck.
2.) I've finally heard "Accelerate" and it really, really sucks hard. If the best they can do after a dozen albums is "Living Well is the Best Revenge" then I feel sorry for them. Enjoy the snoozer at Merriweather. The Rolling Stones aged more gracefully than R.E.M. It's just all "look! we have a guitarist in the band!" Just pathetic. The Raconteurs album is a billion times better. So is the Panic At The Disco one. Oh, and the Fall Out Boy live album is a LOT of fun. John Mayer and FOB doing "Beat It?" Choice.

Hey hey...being a fag isn't a negative, in fact in my book you're paying him a compliment and that's just not cool. Think about how much better our lives are because of homosexuals. So many contributions to society...from Aristotle to Michelangelo to Darby Crash to Bob Vila. I mean COME ON. Not to mention Tom Cruise and John Travolta. (OK, we can delete those two Scientology freaks.) I do however think that slunt is a word I'd warmly embrace. Or maybe a tool.
-
Hey! We have figured out that Gogol Bordello are playing V-fest. They'll be on Saturday's line-up. The source is their label's website. Good stuff, right?
So far, we can check one name on my list :)
As for the Brian non-sense...To ignore the past in terms of music would be to destroy pop music. Music, just like literature, functions with traditions. The reason why some of these bands matter is because they broke rules and lead different movements, ideas, and cultures. Without The Stooges and the Velvet Underground, most indie rock would not exist. I have a great appreciation for current music by loving and knowing music from the past. So to disreguard the past is to disreguard everything. And plus, music that is based on another band that was influenced by another band (which comes from the past) is music that tends to get super boring and is bastardizing a genre. I would sincerely hope that a band who wants that Interpol sound (Yes I once had some hipster fuck tell me that's the sound his band wants) at least knows who Gang of Four and Joy Division were (that same hipster idiot had no clue who they were- very sad and it explains why his band sucked). Things tend to be less organic when one doesn't investigate music at a deeper level. By going to the root of a source, you can see perhaps the genius of the newer stuff because you notice how that newer band breathes new life into an otherwise already done sound. (I think this is something even the kids at Pitchfork would agree with me about this!)

Isnt Jack Johnson headlining both these festivals...

Hmm...Good questions.
I didn't take contractual obligations into consideration.

just get snailhook to book an experimental music tent. A strong lineup for something like that could draw a good 1-2k people who never would've considered going otherwise.

then again, as a headliner, JJ probably has the pull to dictate the terms of his contract. second and third tier acts (not sure where chromeo fit in the hierarchy) might not have as much bargaining power.

You are kidding right?? I've never even heard of any of those bands.
-
Must be a really really deep deep indie festival.
-
There have been other threads about it on this board but they didn't go anywhere.
But yeah...out of all the festivals in the US this summer, this one does have the highest percentage of acts I'd like to see.
-

Me either, but only because they're too mainstream.

How so?
Remember all the bitching everyone did re: RHCP taking prime headliner slots at festivals last year and the year before that should've gone to more deserving bands?
-
I think the Chili Peppers are just a tad better then JJ.
-
Some time ago, maybe.

Haha, I love how Seth is always keeping us in suspense and dropping hints about how good the lineup will be.
I trust in Seth that he'll bring all the best to the V-Fest. I had a ton of fun last year, and I'm already excited about this year.
My only concerns are: 1.) not getting some of the "smaller" acts who are on most of the 3-day festivals (Nicole Atkins) since V-Fest is only 2-day, 2.) a lack of British acts (my favorite part of last year). Only Bloc Party is rumored so far; hopefully we can get Kaiser Chiefs or Paolo again.
-
I'm pretty disappointed with this year, honestly. I don't care for most of the headliners at all. Maybe Clutch will play the festival.

You are right we haven't seen the whole line up yet. So when the heck can we see the whole line up??? haha. I plan to go anyway but just wondering how it will compare to Lolla. I'm going to Lolla too so it will be a crazy two weeks. Going to APW on Friday then Vfest for Sat and Sunday. Bring the lineups!!!!!!!!!

i guess, but i dont see folx traveling to vfest to see jj--who knows. rhcp were the reason i went to the first vfest. and the chance to see the who perform.

me too

Yeah I'm driving into Baltimore early friday morning and taking an amtrak to Newark NJ. It's like 150 bucks total. I haven't bought it yet but should soon. With gas prices going to be 10 bucks this summer haha, I think this is the best way. Also I don't feel like driving to NY with that nut traffic.
-
i'm doing friday + sat at APW, and am seriously considering sunday at VFest.
taking amtrak up to APW is a great idea. from newark railway station, they claim to have a direct shuttle/rail to LSP. alternately, it's a short walk from the PATH train. question is, how will you get home? last train back to bmore/dc isn't that late, would require missing some of the radiohead set. you'd need a hotel, or a ride back.
single-day ticket for friday are still available, but i wouldn't wait too long before buying them. saturday single-days sold out the day the went on sale.
-
I'm going home that same night or morning really. I'll have to rough it out at the train station I think the first train to leave is like 320 am. I figure the concert will be over at 11 or because thats what everyone is saying. Maybe if I have time get some food to eat after concert then head back to train station and wait in agony. Thats my plan
-
And by meaning heading back home I mean back to my car haha. Because I'll be coming from Charlottesville, VA and my car will be at the Baltimore train station. From there I'll head to vfest or maybe get a hotel room haven't decided yet.

well, i am in baltimore and seriously like 3 blocks off of 95 so i couldnt be more on the way.
i am waiting to hear on a new job this week and if that pans out we could probably rent a van with like 7 ppl and it would probably be less than 50 a person. oh how green of us.

Someone HAS TO FILM THIS! Message board indie dorks in a madcap road trip to go to two festivals in one weekend? Classic! Oh, the self-referential dialogue! Oh, the pointless discussions of coffee and TV shows you watched when you were 10! Oh, the sudden, awkward political rants! And the sexual tension? OFF THE CHARTS!!! It's like the movie "Fanboys." You should call yours "Hipsters." You can even get Miss P to play the Kristen Bell part!

personally, i'd get a hotel room in jersey and get a full & proper night's sleep. the alternative is waiting 2-3 hours in a train station, then 1.5 hours sleep on the train, then a subsequent 4-5 in a hotel in b'more.

Virgin Festival Calgary Lineup Released
Wednesday, Apr 9, 2008 3:03AM
Stone Temple Pilots and The Tragically Hip have been announced as the headliners for the first Virgin Festival Calgary.
The June 21-22 event will take place at Fort Calgary Historic Park.
Joining Stone Temple Pilots on day one so far are The Flaming Lips, Three Days Grace, Corb Lund, Face to Face, The Dudes, Pride Tiger and Crash Parallel.
Besides The Tragically Hip, day two's lineup currently includes Matthew Good, City and Colour, Stars, Constantines, The New Pornographers, Attack In Black, Ten Second Epic, The Spades, The Whitsundays and Said the Boys.
Additional artists will be added in the coming weeks.
continued... (http://www.pollstar.com/news/viewnews.pl?NewsID=9859)
baltimore is being upstaged by calgary?!? seth, defend the honor of the original north american VFest! give us the line-up!!!

i'm not certain what your plan is, but just to be clear: if it does include a hotel/motel, i'd recommend getting one in NJ and returning to b'more the next day, instead of a night of short broken sleep as you prepare yourself for another 2 days of festival fun.
-
Must say the Calgary lineup is eh, however I like the ticket prices. How about it Seth? 125 bucks for two days instead of over 200 bucks.
-
you could always take the last bus back to dc. it leaves ny at 1am if you dont want a hotel room.
i'm always up for a carpool, but it's hard getting people to commit to it.
what are the chances the black angels will play vfest? seth i hope they're on that list of yours.
-
Yeah, I think I'm just going to train it and see what happens.
-
I hear a rumor that Vampire Weekend, Serj Tankian, Metric, Saul Williams, and The Breeders will be added to the lineup. Is that true Seth??? I can see Saul Williams because he is pretty good friends of Trent Reznor and toured with him before. Come on lineup!!!

Nearly 85% of Lolla's lineup doesn't interest in the slightest this year.

My guess/latest prediction is Hot Chip. Since during Friday's show they said they'd be back later this year.

you'd think that announcing the line-up sooner rather than later would be in the festival's best interests... people need to plan, and often it's a choice of one festival over another. people that have gone ahead and committed to lolla or APW will be less likely to sign up for VFest.
-
for people who like STP and NIN and FOO, most of them are probably just going or not.
the last few lineups drive at more commercial rock , the "Festivalites" are less of the priority it seems. which isnt a bad thing considering how damn picky we are!
its easier and more profitable to appeal to a broader market. and that market isnt picking between festivals i wouldnt think.
-

waiting for the inevitable, then saying "i told you so" - excellent marketing strategy. will definitely sell more tickets than getting the line-up out in the same time-frame as all the other festivals.

I'll more than likely go if Kraftwerk are added.

Spin Magazine has Wilco listed as a headliner

I'm sure some people will be disappointed and some people will love it
I am trying to come up with the best lineup I possibly can, and don't want to book anything mediocre just to try & get it done in order to compete with other festivals announcements

Prince is easily a headliner for Coachella and he wasn't announced until late ...
-
that's 'cause prince wasn't added until later, when they saw that people weren't buying. he wasn't part of the original blueprint for coachella'08.
-
I don't know, after their recent less than superb albums, Weezer might not be a headliner. Dylan isn't known to be a great live act, but he is a legend nonetheless. And i think Beck is less popular than the already announced headliners. at least right now he is
i would say at the present time, the Foos, STP, JJ and Kanye are bigger than Beck and Weezer. And Dylan might not be the best fit for vfest, meaning he isnt a headliner. That being said, the thought of Bob fucking Dylan "opening" for anyone else is blatant sacrilige.
if Beck, Dylan, and Weezer all play, ill most likely be there
-
I could see Beck or Weezer being added. It's possible their touring schedules were still being put together when Seth and Virgin Mobile felt pressure to release information to compete with every other festivals full lineup announcements.
-
Ahh, I'd love Beck and Weezer.
Monday the 28th is going to be a great day.
-
Bob Dylan would feel the spot of old rockers from way past. Like at first virgin fest they had the Who and last year they had Cheap Trick.
-
Beck and Weezer would get me to consider it. I still cant understand how Jack Johnson is headlining a festival, let alone like 10 of them
-
Seth is probably chuckling about all the speculation we are coming up with the bands we are throwing out. Either we are right and this should be a good lineup or we are way wrong and things all go to hell.
-
joining the chorus of =w= weezer.

Confirmed:
Limp Bizkit
-
Limp Bizkit????? Ohhhhhh I'm def there!!! Seth outdid all the festivals this year if that is true. Screw Lollapalooza!!!

yikes
-
There's no way...that HAS to be a joke.

i would definitely NOT go if Limp Bizkit were playing. that would be laugable! and of course, shameless.

Sarcasm at it's best.

ugh - his fifteen minutes were up long ago...

Anyone seen a recent photo of Fred Durst (http://perezhilton.com/2008-04-15-remember-him-4)? Yowza.

There you go, you heard it from him. NO LIMP BIZKIT!!! How about booking Toto??

I guess Limp Bizkit was good enough when they were selling out Fall Edition HFStivals but now that the worm has turned there is no band (not even Creed or Nickleback) that get as much scorn as Mr. Durst's crew.
For about three years in the late 90's/early 00's no band mattered more than Limp Bizkit. They meaned more then than Wilco or Arcade Fire do now. The only people who care about them is persons refined who have heard every track on Pitchfork's year end top 100.
"Significant Other" is owned by a lot of people who only own about fifty CDs. More people indentified with Fred Durst and felt what he was saying then ever will with Jeff Tweedy. What can you feel with Jeff Tweedy? Righteous anger that they screwed up your order at Starbucks, that your new retro "kicks" have been scuffed and your librarian glasses aren't ironic enough?
Finally, Dave Grohl is a far bigger a-hole/douchebag and has far less talent than Mr. Durst. Two monkeys in a room for about fifteen minutes could bash out the entire Foos oeuvre.
You may not admit to it, but Limp Bizkit weren't the great Satan everyone says they were. They've just become the easiest punchline. The leaders of tommorow will be Bizkit fans who bought "Results May Vary" the day it came out. Not people who get visibly erect at a Jens Lekman concert.
Good luck with Stone Temple Pilots.

God help us. Maybe these (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/) leaders.
Hasn't Limp Bizkit been dormant for several years now? They must suck for no reason other than that. Pure nostalgia.

potw. possibly month .. not quite year.

My wish is that single day ticket prices for V-Fest would be comparable to Sasquatch ($56.50), Bumbershoot ($35) or Austin City Limits (2007 price: $60).
-
Ha you will never see those prices for VFest. Try 100 bucks a day. with two days passes going for $195.00. Right???????
-
Those prices were when they had stadium worthy headliners like the Who and the Police. No way would they try to charge those prices with the headliners they've announced this year.

Hmmmm...... good point. Well hell lets hope it's super cheap then. 50 bucks a day????? 99 for two day passes?????
-
you know damn well they've set a precedent for $100, and since when do prices go down in this country.
-
yea im pretty sure they've already announced that ticket prices will be $97 a day and $175 for a 2 days pass
-
Yeah, that sounds about ideal. Maybe 60 and 119 since it is in DC, and people in DC are all rich.

Look at the headliners, a DC1010 listeners wet effing dream. And maybe even a Hot 99.5 listeners dream. The price will NOT go down and even if it does it will only be like 10 or 15 bucks.
-
Yeah so I was right orginally haha. 99 a day and 195 for two give or take 20 bucks.

false. might have been true for your small insular western-PA high school, but it didn't happen in the rest of the country. limp bizkit mattered to 14-year-olds who thought they deserved more allowance then they were already getting.

I think that everyone should decide which festival to go to based on ticket price
wait a minute...then it would be all about the money...just like those greedy promoters

so you're saying that at $100 a ticket and 50,000 people you are just breaking even?
how much does that jack johnson guy get paid?

now sweetie. Limp Bizkit did sell 14 million records in those 3 years. Twice as many as Blink 182, and more records than Coldplay has sold in their entire career.
and i dont think theres that many people in Western PA.
they mattered, in a time we'd rather forget about, they mattered.

LB are in competition with b-182 and coldplay - sweet.
according to wikipedia (and i'm too lazy to confirm it elsewhere), "Coldplay have been one of the most commercially successful acts of the new millennium, selling over 30 million albums." not that i'm saying that coldplay "matters" either.
and lest we think album sales mean anything, celine dion has sold over 200 million albums.

One's feelings about the importance of Limp Bizkit is directly proportional to one's feeling about the lasting cultural significance of TRL during the Carson Daly years.
Yes LB constantly got voted into the countdown. Yes LB got idiots who don't really like music fired up at the turn of the century. Yes Wes Borland seemed to have some talent and made a proto-KFed a big star . . . but history has no use for them.

sorry, i omitted the US Sales part. In America, since this is the country we live in, Limp Bizkit has sold more records than Coldplay.
and for 3 years, yes, they mattered (not anymore, but they did)in pop culture, just cause you werent part of that, doesnt mean it didnt happen.

100 bucks a day makes me miss the days of hfstivals where the ticket price was no more than 30 bucks and that included those damn ticketmaster fees.
Granted, I do understand why the 100 bucks a day when there were some major legendary headliners. I'm just worried that with the price of tickets plus the price of gas, i just won't be able to squeeze it this year. It sucks that the economy is so closely dictating what I'm doing for the summer.
-
while expensive, i do think last years v-fest was worth the money i paid. i had a great time. and i usually hate outdoor festivals.

How can you say history has no use for them? Or KOrn? or Hoobastank? Granted the gay hair metal shit is coming back in a way with all the gay emo/scene/scremo shit, but why the HELL would anyone want to see the rap-rock craze come back? THey served their purpose and that's that.

I love festivals, a chance to see bands during the day and not after 11pm.

Actually, wouldn't it be hilarious if Limp Bizkit got booked at the most uber-indie festival? You could have Radiohead and Beck headline, but the bill would include PJ Harvey, Aphex Twin, Arcade Fire, Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Yo La Tengo and the Shins. And there would be reunions from the Stone Roses and Pavement. Minor Threat will get on the bill at the 11th hour, but the real shock is when a massive toilet bowl is rolled onto the stage and Limp Bizkit emerge and play "Rollin (Air Raid Vehicle)". Now there's a show to blow your mind.

it'd be more realistic to be surprised by the appearence of say Ian Brown and not a reformed Stone Roses. Say him AND Jarvis Cooker - that'd be bliss - Limp could crawl back into that toilet for all I care.

Hey Seth,
It's only a couple more days until the announcement. Can we get any hints? Please? We're so bored we've resorted to Limp Bizkit discussion.
And you know, in case you haven't booked one of his bands, Josh Homme (QOTSA, EODM) has collaborated with both Dave Grohl and Trent Reznor. Just sayin'.

I think they played "Mile End", too.

Wow, that lineup is pretty stacked. I think I might be going now, if thats what it turns out to be. Kanye's not listed though.
-
hmmm Sunday's Line and Dance Tent looks very interesting, but the August heat scares the begeezus out of me... Sweetcell will probably be pretty stoked...
Underworld on Sat is something I would like to see, their new album is solid and it sounds like they have a live band to tour with these days.
-
This lineup is a lot different then the first two festivals. Iggy is my favorite addition.
looks like a lot more will be added at least for Sunday
-
Hmmmmm.... so Seth this was suppose to be the lineup that makes us go goo goo ga ga over everything?????
-
After looking at lineup tickets should be no more then 60 a day and two day passes being 130 or so. Right guys???? Tuti Fruiti?
-
Where the hell is Weezer on there????
-
Some decent bands, but as a festival goes this has to be the weakest lineup of the summer.

I can't decide whether to be more excited about the fratboy, alt-rock grooves of 90's rock bands like Offspring and Stone Temple Pilots or the infectious dance beats of "Lil' Wayne". Either way, I'll pass and just order tickets for Chicago this year.
I'm happy we have V-Fest in Baltimore. But this just isn't my thing.
-
sweetcell is creaming his pants right now...
The Offspring...
I'm sure he'll sell his APW tickets just to see the Offspring :)

the APW line is really hit or miss like the v-fest, there are some bands i like to see but not enough on any given day to make it worth the bother... guess groovin away at DEMF will be my festival this year...
-
Umm is this even real. I don't see a link to it anywhere, and Wiki changed it back to the old confirmed names from this list pretty fast.
-
If the Pollstar thing is right, this should be AMAZING. Just saying.
Thanks Seth! Seriously, if that's anything close to right, this is going to be nice.
-
Ehh.
I'll wait until Monday to make any final judgments (and see if this is real). I trust in Seth bringing more solid acts.
If I go - and not just fly out to Chicago the weekend before - I'd be excited about the following bands:
Bloc Party
Cat Power
Foo Fighters
---
B.R.M.C.
Nine Inch Nails
Stone Temple Pilots
-
In an interesting development, Pollstar has removed the bands they posted. Either some of it's erroneous or the Virgin fest people were like "HEY THIS IS SECRET WHY U DO THAT?!"
-
yay
chromeo
underworld
armin van buuren
cat power
bloc party
swell season
-
oh no.
-
Oh my
-
Oy Vay
-
Oh yessssss
-
Oh come on....... that's the lineup????

Well tommorrows the big day. Although I am satisfied with a good amount of names on the lineup, i'd like to see a few more bigger names come out. Anybody have any speculation as to new names? Besides Kanye and Rabbit in the Moon.

LOL. I think this kid is kinda cute, in a little kid all excited and full of anticipation in the days just before Christmas (or the respective holiday) kind of way. Now if I find out he's(?) some 35 year old, I'm going to be sorely disappointed and start thinking he's kind of creepy.
-
lol geez guys I'm just playing around trying to find out what the lineup is and egging on Seth. I guess we will find out tomorrow how it stacks up. Right Seth? You said better then Lollapalooza, Coachella, and Bonnaroo combined.

As much as I want it to be the former,
I'm afraid and more confident that it's the latter.

any idea on what time the line-up is going to be up. Is it going to be like exactly at midnight as all the others have seem to be announced at.
-
Odds are he'll delay again.
Dammit.
-
I hope not, I've been waiting too long for tomorrow to come. Also umm someone go to wikipedia and tell me whats up with the random weird additions of bands that don't exist at all with weird names ... someone is having too much fun with that.
-
http://www.virginmobilefestival.com/#/home/ (http://www.virginmobilefestival.com/#/home/)
I do like this
-
Chuck Berry with the Silver Beats is going to be very fun.
-
the lineup is much weaker draw wise on saturday than sunday! i'm pretty surprised..having said that i will be there saturday because the only act i really want to see is chuck berry and with the silver beats who kick ass..
but to have one day be jack johnson wilco offspring and the other day be kanye dylan stp iggy pop nine inch nails
its kinda crazy if you ask me..
as i say though i'm grateful to seth for finally bringing chuck berry back and putting him with a great backing band.... thanks! and about time!
-
the go! team
yay
-
It's OK. I was hoping for a better mid-level bill, but they can't ALL be great.
I was pretty certain I'd go to Lollapalooza instead, but then Seth pulled out Dylan and She & Him. Hmm.
Pretty weak Saturday. Only Foo Fighters, Bloc Party, and Cat Power really interest me.
Sunday's looking worthy, though. NIN, STP, Dylan, BRMC, Iggy, Zooey, Shudder to Think, Black Keys. Nice.
-
shudder to think - didn't see that coming!
glad to see the NYC shows really weren't just a quasi-reunion.
-
Dylan! I think its a good lineup. Iggy, Kanye, Black Keys and Dylan Sunday will be a lot of fun.
-
I'll be buying my Lolla ticket today. Oh well
-
its alright... would have liked to see some more big names, but ill be there.
-
Still passing and going to Lollapalooza. But nice job placing everyone worth seeing (in my opinion) on Sunday. Maybe when I get back, if I have money left over from Chicago...although it will be pretty embarrassing paying 100 bucks to see a show that features Lil' Wayne. I wanna be as cool as ever and say that Chuck Berry is really, really awesome, but I can only name a few songs. Would he gain indie-alternative cred if he just rolled out obscure singles and new material instead of the radio hits at the festival?
Bummer Moby is only doing a DJ set.
And who the fuck are the Silver Beats?
-
Much better lineup on Saturday. If tickets were $60 per day, it would be tempting.
-
The Silver Beats are 4 Japanese guys that play Beatles covers. It sounds crazy, but they are a good time. They seem like really humble guys on stage, and a great part of the whole thing is seeing their reaction to the crowd when they play really happy Beatles songs. I just have a feeling that they will be in their glory when backing Chuck Berry, and it will be heart-warming to see. In addition, it is pretty exhilirating to sing along with all of the old Beatles songs in a big crowd. I just hope Chuck is nice to them, because I have read that he can be a grouchy old guy sometimes. If he is into it, the dynamics of the five of them on stage could be a cool concert moment.
-
yikes same price as last year 175 two day, 97.50 one
-
Anyone have VIP last year? I am thinking of splurging for one since I only want to go on Sunday.
-
Shudder to Think.....very COOL.
-

Not bad. Not bad at all. Will plan to be there both days.
-
IM surprised, I think it's solid. I don't get why everyones wants like 60 bands they wanna see, you can only see so many effing bands in one day. Im pretty excited theres defeintly a bunch of bands Id love to see so both my days will be packed like last year and the year before.
-
we do stagger the sets so you could actually see every band if you wanted to

I jumped from stage to tent to stage last year. This year there's a bulk of people id LOVE to see and just wanna sit and watch their whole set. Last year was great cuz I got to see a bunch of bands I probably never would have seen. Same thing this year but theres more that I wanna enjoy.
Thanks for Erol Alkan! Ive been dying to see him live!
-

How long before we see the time slots?
-
excited to see she & him, go! team, andrew bird and shudder to think. sunday is pretty strong, but will be at both days.
just one questions - is it chuck berry WITH the silver beats as suggested on the poster? because if so .. oh wow. that could be bananas.
and since i'm prolly the only nerd who read the release on the festival, more acts will be added to the bill, according to seth.
yay. i'm excited already.
-
only a very few bands i want to see on this list. its a solid lineup, just not my taste really.
I think i'll wait til set times come out to decide.
-
no jimmie's chicken shack?
-
No Guns N' Roses? Where's Axl?
-
a whole lot of "meh"...not going.
-
Also, I heard that Smashing Pumpkins are getting back together.
-
yeah i like sunday better but i plan on going to both days
-
No ticketmaster fees at 9:30 Club or Merriweather again this year?
It's not a bad lineup, but I do like last year's better.
-
yes its chuck berry and the silver beats... in other words with.. and if you go to the silver beats myspace page which i thik is silverbeatsusa
they have posted a blurb about it.. in fact they posted it april 19!
i also think the silver beats will do their own set... in fact the beats wrote they will play with chuck before the foofighters..
i really have no option i will have to go saturday because i must see chuck berry.. if seth somehow also took advantage and lined up a gig with chuck and the silver beats at the 930 club that would be something....
i'd love to see the silver beats playing the 930 again.. they were fabulous early this year and it was great seeing a beatles tribute band in a non-theater sitting on your ass environment...one of my favorite shows of the year...
-
nice job seth. i will def be there.
cannot pass up seeing brmc--wonder if they'll do a song with dylan?
i'm keeping my fingers crossed for a 930 date later this year too.
-
Saturday looks pretty good
Is Soulwax live or a dj set? I completely missed their Nite Versions DJ thing-a-ma-jig at the 9:30 last year.
what no Simian Mobile Disco - ugh... oh well.
-
Stooges !!!!!!!! And Dylan. And NIN. Sunday's the day fer me, and I'll be there. Way to go Seth, and thanks for pulling off a good lineup.

Soulwax is probably gonna dj. It's whatevz, last year they dropped like THEE sickest remixes. And everyone is playing their Justice remix. Its effing epic.

now i am most unhappy! :(

no of course not, i am perenially unhappy.
-
Just how good is the VIP seating?
-
^^ that's what i want to know too.
-
i'd be happy if this were in late september, as I would see myself happily bouncing between the second stage and dance tent wondering what that loud din from the other end of the field was...
-
Is it safe to assume Dylan will be the Headliner on the main stage for day 2?
-
Originally posted by bkrome:

I wanna say headliner on the second stage...
Or maybe he takes the co-headliner spot on the main stage before... Jack Johnson...
-
It's WAY too soon to figure out set times, but I'll go ahead and take a shot at it. (I'll probably be way off on Sunday since the lineup seems incomplete)
Seth, can you PLEEEEEASE not put Cat Power and Bloc Party at the same time? :)
---
(My predictions)
SATURDAY
Main stage:
Foo Fighters
Jack Johnson
The Offspring
Bloc Party
Lupe Fiasco
Paramore
KT Tunstall
Rodrigo Y Gabriela
Second stage:
Wilco
Chuck Berry & The Silver Beats
Cat Power
Gogol Bordello
Duffy
The Swell Season
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings
Citizen Cope
I figure Wilco headlines second stage and Chuck Berry precedes them (thanks to the Silver Beats mentioning that they play just before the Foo Fighters).
The final spot on the main stage COULD be Gogol Bordello, but I bet they play later in the day. I just don't see Gogol playing at the same time as Bloc Party or The Offspring, though, so that could complicate things.
Cat Power and KT Tunstall could swap since I'm not sure how popular Chan is at a festival setting.
If any bands are added to the festival, I'll doubt it's on Saturday. 8 bands per stage is already pretty tight.
I have no clue when it comes to dance tent, except that Underworld likely headlines. Sorry!
============
SUNDAY
Main stage:
Nine Inch Nails
Stone Temple Pilots
Kanye West
Bob Dylan
(Band to be added)
Taking Back Sunday
She & Him
(Band to be added)
Second stage:
Iggy & The Stooges
Shudder to Think
BRMC
Lil Wayne
The Black Keys
The Go! Team
Andrew Bird
(Book the Band winner)
I doubt it ends up this way, but I just don't see NIN vs. STP. That wouldn't make sense. Kanye is too big to be second stage. Dylan COULD headline second stage, but wouldn't it be brilliant to see him mid-afternoon?
She & Him might be more second stage material if it's just Zooey and M. Ward, but perhaps her celeb status puts them on the main stage.
BRMC is a real wildcard. They could be a late second stage band or an early main stage band. Based on their empty NorVa show this past October, I'm guessing second stage.
I know they're adding a few bands, and I bet they bring back the Book the Band contest, so I added a few slots.
---
Feedback? Anyone else want to play the guessing game? Last year, I was right about Police vs. Modest Mouse but way off on day two.
-
The Washington Post Article says Dylan will play right before Kanye on one of the stages on Sunday, it didnt say which one.
It also said Lil Wayne will play between the Black Keys and She & Him. Again, no further details.
Seth, please tell me Dylan will play a headliner length set?
and please tell me you stipulated in his contract that he must play Blonde on Blonde in its entirety, backed by the Band.
yes?
no?
-
The Swell Season just won an Oscar, I'd think they'd be before bands that not a lot of people have heard of.
With that said, The Swell Season is the reason I'll be attending... well, the actual reason to buy my ticket. All the other bands are fucking awesome too. But I said if TSS would be booked, I would come. and .. here i come?
-
so perhaps i should ask this in another thread, but its Vfest related.
I heard someone say that they read there would be 2 equal size stages at Vrest this year and that it wouldnt be one big stage and one small stage like the first year.
I didnt go last year but i know that the first year it was all the commercial bands (killers, who, rhcp) on one stage and the indie-type bands (new pornos, scissor sisters, lips) on the other stage.
was that different last year or this year? or can we ultimately expect Dylan, stp, kanye and NIN all on the same stage, for instance?
-
Question: How many tickets generally are sold? and is it a "if I don't buy the opening weekend, I'm screwed" kind of thing?
-
Originally posted by Erinaceous Sonickus:

Last year there was definitely a main stage and a second stage, but there was more balance than year one. Interpol>Pumpkins was up against Velvet Revolver>311; TV On The Radio>Modest Mouse was second fiddle to Beasties>Police.
I wouldn't expect, personally, Dylan, STP, Kanye, and NIN to all be on one stage. I would guess Kanye and NIN will play last on the two main stages with STP immediately preceding NIN... and Dylan, who knows?

No idea on total ticket number but I don't believe this has sold out any year yet.

I don't think its been close to sold out either year. Despite the fact that I'm not really loving this year's lineup, I'd love to see every VFest sell out. I remember after the first year...I thought they might have second thoughts about bringing it back. And last year, Day 2 seemed a lot smaller than Day 1.
-
the probably have like a 5-year deal. barring anything crazy like only 5000 people showing up or something.
-
Thanks for the responses =D
-
Any guesses as to bands that could be added?
Are Weezer or the Roots possibilities?
I'd LOVE to see either added.
And the Roots owe me a live performance after the earth day rainout
-
the VIP section last year was a fenced off section - where the soundbooth/lighting stuff was basically. THen I think there was another VIP only section that had picnic tables and tents that was off to the side.

In an interview either Seth or Richard Bronson or Branson or whatever said they would expect 100,000 people over both days. And it has yet to sell out any years so far, although last year's first day was FUCKING PACKED compared to the first year.
God damn Police.

One of my comments last year to Seth was that there were lousy/nonexistant sightlines from the two VIP bar areas. I'm hoping that that this will change for 2008.
One change that they've noted is that there will be a separate viewing area for BOTH stages (unlike last year) which is a definite improvement!
-
I want Beck ...
Beck would be perfect for mid-afternoon on Sunday, and a great act live to lead us into the night
-
i am actually very suprised beck isn't playing. i thought he would definently be there.
-
Lets just hope Beck is one of those bands that might be added, along with Kings of Leon, but more so Beck.
Please give us Beck Seth, please!
-
For any fans of EDM out there...
That is one seriously stacked EDM bill. Underworld, RITM and Pendulum doing a live set, Soulwax, Moby, Deadmau5, and Chromeo? Count me in.
Here's to hoping that on Sunday, NIN and RITM don't conflict.
-
Don't be surprised if Radiohead and Grizzly Bear are added to Sunday and one of Sunday's headliners pushed to Saturday.

Pitchfork is reporting Deerhunter is on the lineup, but does not say which day. Good addition.
EDIT: Probably Sunday since they're on tour with NIN. The whole thing could be a giant assumption on p4k's part, tho.

I'd say Springsteen has a better chance of being added. There's a big gap between their Foxborough show 8/2 and Milwaukee 8/30

He's saying they're staggered so you could "see" every artist. Not that you could "see the entire set" by every band.

ah, thanks. silly me.
i like it when festivals have two stages side-by-side or facing each other (like lolla), and as soon as one band stops on stage 1 the next starts up on stage 2. all music all the time.
-
Oh god. Please not Deerhunter. They were terrible as openers for the Smashing Pumpkins in Asheville.
Deerhunter + The Offspring + Paramore + Taking Back Sunday = Almost enough to make me NOT want to go.
I think the festival is just too eclectic and needs another ROCK band or two (Kings of Leon, Eagles of Death Metal, etc.) to draw in the traditional crowd.
-
I can't imagine Deerhunter's live show translating well in a space bigger than the BC backstage.
-

A Place To Bury Strangers is also opening for a block of the NIN shows and they have that date open which also has me wondering if Seth will bring them in as a late addition. Would be nice. Plus they are playing a shit load of festivals all around the planet so we know they are now on the festival circut.
-
Now that's a band whose sound would translate awesomely in a big outdoor space.
Although I'm kind of hoping they'd play the black cat on one of those empty dates instead.

Yeah, Backroom or the Velvet.
Actually, I'm not all that sure how they will come off on a big stage, especially outdoors. They are the kind of band that I absolutely love seeing in those tiny little grungy venues. Damn. As happy as I am for the boys hitting the road to success, I'm also lamenting that we may not see many of those smaller shows with them later on.
-
They might be too big for the Velvet already.
At the RNR hotel show a month or two ago when they opened for Holy Fuck/Sons and Daughters, they had both bands beat pretty bad on that "who did you come to see?" list.
-

Is it true that their album is limited to 500 copies? Seems pretty small for a band with this much buzz. Either way, it's an awesome album. I'd love to see them live.
I liked the Deerhunter record but I really can't imagine them at a festival. If they were there I'd still watch their set, though.
-
Originally it was limited to 500 or 1,000 copies, or whatever, but once they sold out, they pressed more. The 1st batch sold out quickly, maybe last summer or early fall. I've got one of those along with some earlier releases which are mostly the same songs but rougher mixes.

That would be a great addition, for sure. There's a great lineup in there for a one day festival in that 2 day fest. It's putting up with the rest of it that makes it seem hardly worthy to me. Particularly,me not living nearby.I'm still bitter over Ian M's pathetic attempt with the Bunymen after I ventured to B/more a few years back for that M & t fest thing. Thankfully Sylvain, Ness, and I hear Billy saved the day on that one. I left before Billy came on, as after The Dolls and Social D , I didn't want to sit through what I consider bullshit acts waiting to see him with rain approaching and a several hour drive back to the hills. It was better to leave on a high note as I didn't know what to expect from Mr. Idol. I thought his best days were behind him after GenerationX. I hope V Fest remains enjoyable, profitable and continues for years to come. I just hate what I consider watering down the talent to stretch it to 2 days. I'd pay just as much for a one day fest with the better acts only, but that's just me.
-
I used to feel the same way about 1 day vs 2
but the deal is you have all this stuff set up already, so all you really need to do is book the bands
and then what you might consider filler, is somebody else's reason they're going...and, as you can see from the forum here, you never which band people are going to love or hate...so, if you're like me and want to please everyone and feel their undying love, you need the large canvas to paint your masterpiece
plus, as I said before, this gives us the time to stagger the sets so everyone could see every band if they wanted
if there happens to be an hour where there's nobody playing you want to see, then that's when you can explore the other stuff, or use the opportunity to make that new concert-mate friend that's been missing in your life...it's easy...just turn to your neighbor, give them a hug, and say something like "that Seth sure books the best festivals..I am coming here every year no matter what they say on the Forum!"

Seth, I've gotta say it man. You have provided an extremely awesome lineup for the Dance Tent this year. Thank you making my dream of Underworld close to my home come true.
-
The New York Times screwed up the line-up:
VIRGIN MOBILE FESTIVAL Pimlico Race Course, Baltimore, Aug. 9 and 10. Last year it was on the same weekend as Lollapalooza in Chicago. This year the Virgin Mobile Festival â?? formerly just the Virgin Festival, it moves another notch up the licensing scale â?? faces off against a much closer competitor, All Points West in New Jersey. All Points West may have Radiohead, but Virgin has Bob Dylan, Kanye West, Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, Wilco, Iggy and the Stooges, and the reunited Stone Temple Pilots â?? but no Jack Johnson. Pendulum is no longer listed on the Virgin Mobile Festival Web site. Say it ain't so, Seth.
Also, reviews of the recent STP show in New Jersey say that Weiland was in really awful shape - high as a kite - and the band didn't come on stage for an hour after they were supposed to. Does the V Fest have a contingency plan in case Weiland doesn't make it the whole summer? Things aren't looking good.
Hey Seth, are there going to be more additions? Will there be another Book the Band contest?
I'm still on the fence about whether to go or not. The festival quite honestly is lackluster in my opinion (only BRMC, Dylan, and STP are big draws who aren't on the other big festivals).
-
Great, just freaking great.
-
Book The Band is back!
This year's bands involved are:
The Parlor Mob
We Are Scientists
The Virgin
Hollywood Undead
Automatic Loveletter
If either of the first two bands win, we're in for a treat; I haven't heard the other three yet.
-
My vote goes to We Are Scientists

Great...just freaking great!!!!

i vote for the Parlor Mob

Seth just make sure Mr. Berry is taken care of! The man is up there if you know what I mean..
I also wanted to say- since you seem to read this thread- that it would be great to bring back the Silver Beats to the 930 Club.. that was seriously one of the most enjoyable shows I have ever seen... really really dug it.. Heck thanks in general... I've seen so many great shows at the 930 including Johnny Cash, both Dylan shows in the 90s, etc...Looking forward to Nick Cave too..
Also, my friend would want me to tell you that he doesn't understand why VIP tickets are sold only in pairs ... He only needs one and when you're talking that kind of money I'm not sure why he can't just have one...
-

quite a few people want to know the answer to this one.

vfest prediction: seth will set the schedule according not to business needs nor fans' wants - instead, his kids will dictate who goes on when.
oh, wait, it's been confirmed (http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2008-06-17-music-festivals_N.htm) :p
Whatever the type, organizers have to create a personality for the festival to set it apart from the competition. "You really have to distinguish yourself from the others if you want to draw people from out of your area," says Seth Hurwitz, concert producer for Baltimore's Virgin Mobile Festival.
Hurwitz likes to create interesting moments within each day, whether that's having Bob Dylan lead into Kanye West's set or asking a Beatles cover band from Japan to back Chuck Berry.
Creating a festival schedule is a balancing act, always giving people something interesting while not splitting an audience by booking similar acts at the same time.
"I use my kids as a barometer," Hurwitz says. "They want to see Nine Inch Nails, Stone Temple Pilots and Kanye West. Even though those bands are pretty much closing the stages that day, we've worked it out where you could see all three if you wanted to."
-
I would hope the schedule can come out soon for this event.
Its really going to make or break my decision to go. Lollapalooza's schedule is out way early, i think Vfest should be too!!
Putting the sched out 1 week in advance doesnt allow me enough time.
Perhaps i'm alone but i hope to see it out before July. :)

VIP tickets are sold in pairs because each pair comes with one
premium parking spot. We can, however, sell single VIP tickets
(without parking). They can be purchased at the Merriweather Box
Office or by emailing GroupSales@930.com.

Seth, should we go ahead and expect set times around the same time as last year?

And Seth, are we going to get any additions other than the Book the Band winner?

I always liked this:

I heard they have a new one out. Any thoughts on it? Can't say I've heard it yet.

what??? no Gin Blossoms or Third Eye Blind?

Is Seth joking about these bands or is this for real? Live is already playing in Baltimore Aug 5, so would it make sense for them to play again on the 9th or 10th.

Haha, good stuff. I especially laughed at the last part.
Sadly I'd rather see some of those bands (Live, Violent Femmes, Everclear) than Virgin Festival bands (Paramore, Taking Back Sunday, The Offspring, The Go Team).
Sorry for hassling you with the additions question. It'll really sway my decision of whether I go or not.
-
Oh wait Everclear was listed.
My bad.

There are probably more important things in the world to be concerend about in the world than this, but I am also very concerned about this potential conflict.
It's hard to think of passing up Dylan for anything, but NIN is a great live show and ultimately more rare.
-
what if dylan played with nin? i'd like to see tangled up in blue --> fistfucker ---> you belong to me ---> head like hole ---> senoir --> march of the pigs, etc....

my only scheduling request is please dont put Rabbit in the Moon and NIN on at the same time. Having to choose between them would be painful.

cool to see that the Bindlestiff Family Circus will be there.

why? do you plan on booking progressively shittier acts, so that in 5 years the four bands you mentioned above will seem like salvation compared to what you'll have on the bill for VFest 2013?!?

I think a lot of us are waiting to buy tickets until we can see a.) the schedule, b.) the lineup additions. I think Seth's sent a clear message that we won't hear about either for a few more weeks.
As for scheduling conflicts, please don't have Bloc Party and Cat Power at the same time. And let BRMC have a couple of hours. :)
-
So you think scalpers will sell the tickets at the show dirt cheap to get rid of them?? I know that was the case last year.
-

I'd rather like to know a bit about scheduling as well...there's a part of me considering Atlantic City for BRMC the night before, but that would mean driving back the day of the Festival, and I'm only going to the festival for those boys, so it might be a bit much in the driving way if they're playing early in the day...how much longer we gotta wait?
(ewww, my obsessiveness is showing! how disgusting)

This brings up another potentially disturbing conflict - BRMC versus The Stooges. I really hope that one doesn't happen. Iggy would win, but I don't want to miss BRMC.

his fans went ape-shit because he picked up an electric guitar... do you have any idea what they'll do if he goes industrial?!?
walkers and canes thrown everywhere. people storming out... at a very, very slow pace, stopping every 40 feet to catch their breaths.

The reformed Stooges are in their fifth year . . . not sure what the current setlist is . . . but its officially ok to dip into Raw Power . . . in fact, its officially ok to play Raw Power in its entirety. Do it.

Um, I can't tell if my sarcasm went unnoticed or not.
The perils of the internet
-
The Web site FAQ says it won't be until a week or two before the show. Maybe they're aiming for a lot of last minute ticket sales?
Obviously nobody cares about Book the Band this year, but is Hollywood Undead seriously going to be playing the festival?
-

nah, i got it. i just wanted to take a dig at dylan's fans. hoping they'd get all upset at the characterization... then again, most of them don't use the internet.
-
the schedule was released online about 4-5 days before the festival.
I still have the books from last year's festival. If anyone is interested, i'll upload a picture of the schedules for last year, so you can get an idea of how they work.

Ah, I wasn't sure.
As for Dylan's fans, listening to an album like "The Bootleg Series Volume 4" and imagining it being booed mercilessly, is crazy to me.
But I consider myself something of a Dylan freak. An 18 year old Dylan freak. Disproving your characterization. Haha

Last year's schedule was released July 26, 13 days before the festival. The Book the Band winner (Aiden) was revealed two days prior.

Book the Band winner will be announced tomorrow, according to the VMFest Web site.
Last year, they announced the schedule a couple of days after the Book the Band winner.
Maybe we'll still get a couple of other additions. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Seth, a rumored schedule posted online has Cat Power and Bloc Party playing at the same time. Please say it ain't so!

Seth is being sarcastic I hope. I mean, save for Violent Femmes, these are sh*tty bands.

I doubt it's true since there are no breaks between dance acts, but the set up for Sunday night would be pretty nice.
-
Originally posted by serpent boy:

not having a break between dance acts isn't unusual... keeps people dancing.
seamless hand-offs between DJs/live acts used to be the norm before EMD went all rock'n'roll.
-
last year there were very little gaps between acts in the dance tent (10 mins at the most if I recall correctly).
that schedule has a 30 minute gap between DJ Dan/Donals and Ferry Corsten - which seems very unlikely.
on the schedule last year, there no gaps between just DJs at all.
and wtf? Underworld only getting 1 hr 15 minutes? I was hoping for 90 mins at least :( .
also, Kanye is going to be pissed that his set starts at 6:30. No darkness for him.
-
Originally posted by lancha:

AWESOME. i'd totally go check out his set just to hear him rant. guaranteed to be epic.
-
if he is really playing before NIN, he better not be as late as he was at bonnaroo. If his ego (or anything for that matter) causes a delay and shorter set time for NIN, I will be very pissed.
-
wait... i'm now calling BS..
Wilco has a longer set than the actual headliners of the day... it came from a Wilco fansite...
yeah, i'm losing faith in this one.
-
It's a staggering 15 minute difference...
-
if this schedule were to be true... the andrew bird vs. she & him at the top of the day is a bit epic in terms of who do i pick.
also, sucks iggy and go! team are at the same time. granted, i'm going to pick iggy .. but go! are always a good show.
-
BRMC vs Shudder To Think kinda sucks too
-
in my opinion the schedule is perfect. not one single solitary conflict.
but perhaps thats cause i only want to see like 5 of the bands playing...
-
She & Him vs Andrew Bird would be the only tough call for me if thats the order
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but did Seth not say in a Washigto Post interview a few months ago that Dylan would appear right before Kanye on the second stage?
I think this "schedule" is nothing more than someone's "prediction"
-
She & Him are so boring live. I'd stick to the record.
-
Hollywood Undead win Book the Band...
http://www.virginmobilefestival.com/#/booktheband/ (http://www.virginmobilefestival.com/#/booktheband/)
-
So Seth is there suppose to be another big band announcement or is this it????????
-
Never mind I read an earlier post thinking it was relayed to my last post. Forget that question.
-
bull930...why the name change?????? what does your new name mean????
-
Its missing the Book the Band winner and Citizen Cope...although I would imagine they will simply just be opening each day. The schedule makes sense but I would guess a fan just made it up. I would still like to see an additional act or two to be included.

As much as I love Dylan, STP might be more logical. Dylan tours every year, wheras STP might not make it through this tour, let alone another.
-
awesome. Only real complaint I have for it is why RITM is going on so early (I was hoping for sometime after 5).
But other than that, awesome!! 2 hours of Underworld!! YESS
-
wow, cant believe brmc are on first. well i should be able to get a prime viewing spot.
-
well, glad the sched. finally came out.
I suppose i was hoping for a miracle or some kind of perfect scenario that would make me want to attend but with the lineup not "lined-up" to my tastes and the fact that probably the band i like the most on that lineup playing at noon....this is where i fold...i'm out
hope for better luck next year.
(anyone have any spare pavilion seats to the 8/12 Radiohead show they want to part with?)
-
seeing the line-up finally posted makes me realize how few of the acts i actually want to see... oh well hopefully Underworld and Sharon Jones and the Dap-Tones will tour some more... and see iggy going up against hawtin made me cry inside...
-
Hmm. That first day is really sparse. I could only think of 5 bands I'd be interested in, and two of them (Swell Season and RyG) I'm not even all that interested in.
The second day is definitely worth it, even though whoever picked BRMC to open the day is a moron. They should get 1 hour, not a lame 45 minutes opposite a band playing their first show.
My potential schedule:
Saturday:
12-12:50 Cat Power (nice slot! she's shy)
2:15-3:05 Swell Season
3:45-4:35 Bloc Party (very nice)
4:35-5:25 Rodrigo Y Gabriela
8:15-10:00 Foo Fighters (a full headlining slot)
Sunday:
12:-12:45 BRMC (how can they fit everything into 45 minutes?!)
12:45-1:30 Chromeo (wow. great start to the day)
1:30-1:55 Shudder to Think
2:35-3:25 She & Him (looking forward to Zooey)
4:50-5:15 Iggy Pop
5:15-6:15 Black Keys
6:20-7:35 STP (might leave early for Dylan)
7:35-8:00 Bob Dylan
8:05-10:00 NIN (wow! I hope the visuals are the same as they currently are using)
-
Ouch, BRMC first thing and only 45 minutes? Damn, that hurts. I wonder if it has anything to do with them needing to be in Toronto the next night.
-
I have a feeling that BRMC is early as a ploy to get people to show up early to the festival.
-
I wonder if Chuck Berry's health problems will come into play for V Fest? He skipped out on 2 concerts this weekend. Let's hope if he can't go there is a backup.
-
I'd go with STP. It's hard to understand Dylan when he's singing nowadays....

Apparently Berry skipped those concerts because of an argument he had with his daughter. One article I read said that he was "sulking" after his daughter told him not to drive so fast.

I love the way Dylan sounds these days, but I've already seen him lots of times. I've only seen STP once, and there's a good chance they won't be around much longer. STP is the obvious choice for me, but it's still disappointing I can't see both.

Mega-lame question, but is it possible to get the FYE tent autograph signing schedule before the show? Lollapalooza released theirs.

ok hopefully someone can help me out
i'm in quite a jam here... my friend is having serious house troubles and i no longer have a place to stay in baltimore...
so can anyone open shelter to a trustworthy kid from VA? I just really need a place to crash, even if its just on the floor for a night or two? i'd be more than willing to pay some money or something.
so please, if you can help me out at all, just drop me a PM or something.
