Title: Best and worst album you bought in 2004
Post by: Barcelona on January 19, 2005, 06:55:00 pm
The best album I got would be Neil Young's Greendale.

Worst album was VHS or Beta's "Night on Fire". I liked their music when saw them at the Blackcat but the album is really awful.

That Beastie Boys cd got old really quick.  The new Clutch record kicked ass.

Worst - Beautiful South, Headnodders.
 Best - Beautiful South, Headnodders.

I have really come to like the album, although I thought it was awful at first. I think I was disapointed it was just an album of covers, because Paul Heaton is one hell of a songwriter in his own right. But once I got past that it's a great album. A bit like Billy Bragg and that Mermaid avenue shit, although that was still shit after I had gotten over the fact they weren't his original songs.

Someone bought me Keane (not Roy) and I like that also.

Do you mean that the album was released in 2004, or only that you bought it in '04???  Enquiring minds want to know...

Best:  Toss up between Wilco "Ghost is Born" and Arcade Fire "Funeral"

Worst:  British Sea Power.  The first two songs are great (which were all I listened to in the store) and the rest of the album is unlistenable.

Assuming "bought" isn't a relative term:

Best: Bugge Wesseltoft - Film Ing

Worst: none - I actually listen to music before I buy it.

Assuming "bought" is a relative term meaning "acquired":

Best: The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

Worst: The Secret Machines - Now Here Is Nowhere

Actually I dont think Ted Leo was the best, but the gomez album might well have been the worst. I like all there other albums too. Notice how one of the songs is a complete rip-off of a clash song.....

Mine was actually combining those albums with shows I saw by them this year.  I though Ted was great and the show made me enjoy the album more.  I went to gomez and was bored out of my gourd.

ouch ... that BSP disc took me a few listens to get into (i assume you're talking about their LP), but i really love it now ... their live show is second to none ... WW1 army drummer? tons of acid? hanging from the pipes at black cat?  ... awesome ....

I didn't buy anything particuarly godawful, but I was pretty disappointed with Firey Furnaces.  Just didn't catch on.

I couldn't disagree more.  Blemish was a tremendous step forward for Sylvian. He managed to make music that was dramatically different from his previous efforts without losing his identity. And the results were phenomenal.

Best: Franz Ferdinand (self-titled)
Worst: The Darkness- 'Permission to land'

The Darkness was sooo overhyped! I think it had more to do with the lead singer raiding Steve Tyler's 80's wardrobe than anything else. Okay, 'I believe in a thing called love' was pretty cool but the rest of the album sucked!

Best - Rammstein "Reise Reise"

Worst - not sure might be some dissapointing ones but if I bought it I generally found something in it I liked.  I don't buy things I hate either  :)

Yes, Reise Reise is quite good especially if you appreciate the humor in Amerika.

 Best: Mastodon - Leviathan
Worst: Ministry of Sound - American Anthems

The video of Amerika has to be one of the most brilliant videos I have seen in over a decade.  Pure genius!!!

I completely agree with you.  I saw the video and got all excited.  The next day I marched down to my local cd exchange to listen and buy, but it was at that point that I became disappointed. It's a good thing that I listened to it before buying it, because then it would have become my worst album of 2004.
I don't even remember what I bought last year, really.  I only remember two, and they were TV on the Radio and Sonic Youth's latest.  I liked them just fine.

Best:  Fiery Furnaces "Blueberry boat" - Intersting and fun album.  Lots of stuff going on, very wordy in a good way, great music.

Worst: Interpol "Antics" - I liked the guitar interplay of the first album (reminded me of Television), but this one put that all aside and even gave some songs to the keyboard player.  Such a letdown from the first one.

The Burning Brides took a while to grow on me unlike the first one that drew me in from the start.  I really like the second one now.  They rock.

 worst:
Animal Collective: Sung Tongs -- so, so, so, so overrated and overhyped.

Never ceases to amaze me how varied opinions are on an indie board.  For instance: BSP, maybe in my top ten of all time, and yet some hate it (I bought mine  in the middle of '03 though, so not sure what we're talkin' about).  Fiery Furnaces... come on! unless you are a pitchfork wannabe, this is just plain graphic art best viewed via blindfold.  Antics settled with me better than turn on the bright lights.  Yes it is more poppy, but in a good way.  Modest mouse was selling out without going all the way to hades for it.  It allowed people like myself who never gave MM a chance before to listen... and like it.  I think Franz is a good album but overrated.  Same with Arcade Fire, but then how can anything reach that bar many have set.  TV on the radio does something for me.  Stellastarr as well.  Yeah Yeah Yeahs I put up there.  The worst: Atomic Bomb, but hey... it's U2, so it's still worth another ticket to another show this spring.

This is alway so tough for me because something just as good gets left out and a lot of it depends on my mood at any given time.

 Best of 2004:
 (Tied for 1st place)
DestroyAllDreamers - A Coeur Leger Sommeil Sanglant
 Bark Psychosis - Codename: Dustsucker

 (Tied for 2nd place)
 Highspire - Your Everything
 Trespassers William - Different Stars
Ulrich Schnauss - A Strangely Isolated Place
Rachel Goswell - Waves Are Universal

(See, I can't make up my mind!)

 Worst of 2004:
 (...?...)
I could name loads of crap that has been put out but nothing all that bad that I bought really stands out. They just aren't quite as good as the better ones.

Best: Umphrey's Mcgee - Anchor Drops

I don't think there's anything I didn't like that I bought but I could also probably name some shitty albums that I've heard.

Actually I liked it so much better than their last two.  They were really getting away from the sound that made their first two records so great.
